Michelle Obama is O Magazine’s April cover girl

There was some gossip a few weeks ago that Oprah Winfrey and First Lady Michelle Obama were not getting along, but the rumor didn’t seem solid in any way. Now it appears the issue is completely moot.

Michelle Obama will appear on the April cover of O Magazine with Oprah. Oprah is calling it a “joint venture,” considering she almost always just puts herself on the front of the mag. The pictures of the two women were taken at the White House, and the issue features an “exclusive intimate interview” with the First Lady. OK! Magazine has more:

The new issue of Oprah Winfrey’s magazine has double the”O” factor – Michelle Obama joins the daytime diva on the cover O’s April issue, a joint venture that’s a first for the mag.

“Say what you will about books-people do judge a magazine by its cover, which is why it’s important to me to keep the cover of this one looking fresh,” says Oprah. “And right now nothing – and I mean nothing – is fresher than the family that moved into the White House in January, sparking a national spirit of renewal the likes of which I’ve never seen.”

The photo was taken of the two during an intimate White House interview with the First Lady on Feb. 17, the first to take place there since the election. Michelle was a gracious host, giving Oprah a tour of the grounds and part of the family’s private residence.

“It’s a beautiful home,” Michelle tells Oprah of her new digs. “When you go out and come back, especially at night, with all the white lights on – it’s just beautiful. We feel privileged, and we feel a responsibility to make it feel like the people’s house. We have the good fortune of being able to sleep here, but this house belongs to America.”

The issue hits stands March 17, and Oprah will discuss the interview with her pal and O editor-at-large, Gayle King on March 10 at 1pm on the magazine’s SIRIUS and XM show.

Michelle and Oprah seemed to merely tolerate each other on those brief appearances Oprah made on Obama’s behalf during the primaries. In my opinion Oprah doesn’t always seem that tolerant of other powerful women who don’t kiss her ass. Not to say she isn’t all rah-rah-sisterhood, sort of. But the sisterhood has to be pre-approved and vetted, and those sisters have to bow down to Oprah.

In any case, it’s nice to see such smart women together on a magazine cover. I bet the interview’s good too. Michelle always has something great to say and is such a good interviewee.

Oh,GOOD!!!!! Finally an issue without OKRAH staring at us.

I like her outfit, looks like something anyone could find at the local mall. But I seriously think someone needs to help her with those eyebrows. They make her look positively…well, like a shifty politician.

  3. Lem says:

I was going to ask if O knew, I see she SHARED the cover
Is Michelle wearing a clear belt? That is a horrid pic for both of them

Kaiser: I think your assessment of their attitudes towards each other is spot on.
Mrs. Omama’s freshly appointed gossip site spokes-monkey might have to issue another statement regarding this f^ckery

Although I think they both look great (Michelle especially) they looked dressed for a garden party, not the “first interview from the White House.” Given how “styled” them, they look like friends, not interviewer/interviewee. My guess is the superficial appearance of friends is all they will have, because they both can’t be the most powerful woman and the world and Oprah would hate to admit it! Michelle will definitely have much more influence over America than O. Michelle seems so much more real – no $1000 cashmere robes!

But, seriously, Michelle – don’t leave all the lights on when you go out! I know coming back it looks pretty – but save America some $ on the utility bills! 🙂

  5. Tess says:

the media is spoon-feeding obummer idolization morning noon and night.

  6. mE says:

Michelle looks great. O looks very, umm, not her best.

  7. Zoe says:

she is gorgeous, but she needs to tone down the arch in her eyebrows for god’s sake.

  8. Em says:

I cant be the only person that is sick of seeing the prez and his wife on every cover of every other magazine every damn week. Does Michelle have time for anything else..other than sitting for photo shoots?? Geezus!

  9. geronimo says:

Not keen on the cover pic but I think you’re sbsolutely spot on, kaiser, re your assessment of how O sees other powerful women. Spot on!

  10. Mairead says:

That is one hell of an odd cover pic – I wouldn’t be mad about it even on the inside – but for a cover, it’s really off. The two actions aren’t complimenting each other, the positioning of the women in relationship to each other..

it really does give out the impression that Oprah is just tolerating the new popular girl but is thinking of a way to her in her place, just so that she knows who’s been Queen Bee, even before Michelle met Barak.

And I think Kaiser’s assessment of Oprah is spot-on. Presumably unless it’s a long-term friend I see her as being all very “rah-rah-sisterhood” so long as everyone plays along with that aggressive “niceness” and knows their place

  11. Chiara says:

I’d agree too with the assessment … and truly too bad Michelle is not alone on the front cover with pics inside of the two of them.

  12. InFL says:

SICK & TIRED of thr Obama’s in every freaking cover. Go and do your job….if you can.

  13. Autumm Leaves says:

Love the cover. Beautiful. It’s historic and most Americans are celebrating that. Better than the hell America has endured for the past 8 years. Onward and upward!

  14. nashnash says:

Michelle’s eyebrows, I think, are not great but she’s got high arches for brows. Don’t know if it’s bone structure or what, but I don’t think that can be changed (unless she decides to shave off her eyebrows and just tattoo them on). I’m sure she tries her best to not make her brows look like they’re reaching for the sky.

  15. Christina says:

i hate commenting on people’s looks but… michelle has such an intimidating look to her… to put it mildly… those eyebrows and her protruding jaw are unnattractive to me… whereas obama looks so pleasant and approachable… she’s a lucky biotch…

  16. FF says:

No problem with seeing them on the cover of everything, think how long it’s going to be before anything like this happens again.

And don’t kid yourself obviously, their covers must be selling. In this financial climate they’d have to be.

If you want to blame anyone for the idolisation blame the last administration for sucking the hope out of the nation.

  17. sickandtired2 says:

I’m sick and tired of seeing them on so many magazine covers too. I love Bernie Goldberg’s new book. The title alone explains it all, “A Slobbering Love Affair: The True (And Pathetic) Story of the Torrid Romance Between Barack Obama and the Mainstream Media.” Meanwhile he’s running the country into the ground and she’s embarrassing us and insulting PM Brown & his wife by giving them cheap, unthoughtful gifts.

  18. Michelle says:

Would the comments be as negative if First lady Obama was white?

  19. Hi,
    What a cover purely colorful.
    Thanks.

  20. yourmom says:

I don’t understand why every comment made that is negative towards obama or his wife is assumed racist.
    See michelle’s comment.
I could say to America,”would you be so cruel towards George Bush if he were black?”

And really a person who doesn’t like obama because he is black is no worse than someone who voted for him because he was black.

Personally, I don’t think that celebrities should entangle themselves in politics. A candidate should win based on their accomplishments not their popularity.
    I’m going to stop now.

  21. Eldubb says:

Michelle is fine as all out doors. Oprah is just Oprah, one rich powerful black woman. If you haters feel intimidated, don’t buy or look at the magazine. Oprah don’t need your support, nor does Michelle. And I’m sure all those white women on her show recieving all those gifts don’t agree with the Tea Partiers! Say it loud, I’m black and I’m proud! 4 more years!
