Duchess Kate had fancy pizza delivered to the Carlyle on her last day in NYC

FFN_Royals_Fundraiser_GGFF_120914_51604066

Before this week, Prince William and Duchess Kate had never been to New York. There was a rumor going around that Kate wanted to see the Statue of Liberty and maybe the Rockettes, and my mom made another good suggestion: Kate probably would have loved to go to FAO Schwartz. But as far as we know, Kate only got to do her scheduled outings, like wrapping gifts with children, cocktail parties at the consulate and a gala for St. Andrews. But still, Kate managed to have one relatively authentic New York experience: she got to have some New York pizza delivered to her hotel!

Kate Middleton is one class act, but that doesn’t mean she’s not like the rest of Us! The Duchess of Cambridge, who is pregnant with her second child, ordered pizza to her suite at New York’s swanky Carlyle hotel on Dec. 9, a source tells Us Weekly.

So what exactly does a royal get on their pizza? The insider tells Us the royal, who was taking a break before the St. Andrews 600th Anniversary dinner at the Met Museum, ordered “three very specific pizzas” from NYC eatery Serafina, which included “a spicy sausage pizza (with no mushroom) and a prosciutto “di Fabio” pizza (with no sliced tomatoes).”

The five-months pregnant duchess shared the delicacies with a Kensington Palace assistant, her private secretary Rebecca Deacon and hairstylist Amanda Cook-Tucker while she prepared for her evening engagement.

This isn’t the first time Middleton has craved the cheesy goodness either.

According to another source close to the couple, Prince William requested “two Pizza Express pizzas be delivered to their room at the Lindo Wing (at London’s St Mary’s hospital)” on the day his wife gave birth to her first son Prince George. “They both really love their pizza,” the insider told Us at the time, adding that Middleton’s also been spotted buying frozen pizzas at the supermarket over the years.

[From Us Weekly]

Usually, when a lady is preparing for a huge gala, she doesn’t want to eat anything beforehand because she doesn’t want to look bloated on the red carpet. I guess Kate didn’t care because she’s pregnant? And she might have thought that the food at the St. Andrews gala might suck? Still, I like the idea of Kate and her glam squad ordering pizzas and having a quiet moment together as they’re getting Kate ready for a big event.

And here’s Kate rolling her eyes when some bossy Yank told her to keep wrapping presents:

If it weren’t for the Sony hack that side eye gif would be the best thing I’ve seen all week. Perhaps they should take that lady back to the UK and have her in charge of Kate’s schedule?

  2. Chibichichai says:

No judging here, I would have rolled my eyes too with that comment…just with no cameras around. Next time take a pee break and roll away Waity!

    • minime says:

ahah that was a well deserved eye rolling

    • bettyrose says:

I’m glad she did, though. That’s the most personality I’ve ever seen from her, and now I can totally picture her mean-girling others. I’ve never gotten it before.

  3. Tateru says:

No mushrooms? This woman must be stopped.

  4. Have no lipservice please says:

This woman annoys me so much.
She gets tabloid headlines for her clothes and her hair and her jewelry and her food.
But she never really draws attention to a worthy cause. Why did she attend that gala in that ballgown? Why had she met De Blasio’s wife? Why did she wrap presents?

What did she say? – Nothing.

  5. scout says:

Got to eat New York style pizza when you are in NY, just like “got to go to chippy’s and eat some Fish and chips” while you are (anywhere) in England!! Hope she liked it and come back for more 😀

    • FingerBinger says:

Yes ,you have to pizza when you come to New York. Also ,cheesecake from Junior’s.

      • Feeshalori says:

I wonder if Kate ate her pizza with knife and fork as Mayor DiBlasio did.

      • Kori says:

Ah Junior’s cheesecake! Yum. Until our recent move to Europe, we went to NYC during the Christmas season every year. If I was Kate, I would have demanded one down day just to see the sights! NYC at Christmas is gorgeous and seeing the Rockettes at the holidays is a great experience. Rockefeller Plaza, Grand Central Station, Columbus Square, Macy’s, St Patrick’s Cathedral and the 5th Ave window displays–and she could afford to buy stuff whereas I just gawk each year. 🙂 Hopefully she at least got to see the beautiful Baroque Christmas tree at the MET when she was there. But I’ll be headed to their stomping grounds, London and Windsor Castle, in a few days for some holiday time this year instead so I’m not complaining at missing the city this year.

      • FLORC says:

        Kori
Maybe if they return they can take in the sights on their own time and dime.

      • Kori says:

It was just a lighthearted comment in reply to the original post. I don’t care if they saw something or go back on a private visit. I’m a fan of NYC at Christmas.

  6. LAK says:

My take-away from this tour is that William is completely unprepared to be head of state.

I was mortified for him when he told the President of Singapore that ‘he hoped they couldn’t see into his bedroom from their hotel suite since their hotel overlooked KP.

To see what a lightweight he was during his brief chat with Obama, not to mention talking once again about his very personal life instead of keeping the conversation to the purpose of the visit namely conservation convinced me completely that not only is he unprepared he is Wooster in desperate need of Jeeves.

And giving an speech to his Alma mater that one leaves married or an alcoholic!!???? WTH???!!!!

And to give a speech chastising the very people you are about to visit. Come on egghead!! One can talk about the benefits of conservation without vilifying people. Talk about a (elephant) bull in a China shop. Pun intended.

And BTW: it’s funny that he hasn’t responded to the public letter sent to him by the indigenous people saying why they hunt and how it benefits their communities which points out the difference between the 2 activities

It’s a good thing he is a prince because he is as such an airhead.

Actually, considering his comments, it’s no wonder Kate had to lobotomise herself.

    • Olenna says:

“Kate had to lobotomise herself”, Ha! You’re probably right, but I also think Carol was the surgeon in charge of the operation.

    • Lisa Danielle says:

If Will really wanted to do something, he could speak out against the Dubai Royal Family evicting Masai people from their native land so they could have big game hunting vacations….but then again he needs their oil for when he wants to play helicopter pilot I suppose.

    • Vava says:

very true. William needs to get busy and prepare himself for his future role. He’s said some really stupid things.

Kate needs to get busy too and work on her public speaking skills and get some sort of work ethic.

    • RobN says:

Luckily the job has no actual requirements, other than a few ceremonial openings of parliament, so he ought to do just fine. The rest is handshaking and I’d bet that when he gets to be king at age 50, he’ll have that down.

    • LadyoftheLoch says:

“Wooster in desperate need of Jeeves” LMAO. Oh, this! If only he’d inherited more of his paternal grandmother’s characteristics and less of his grandfather’s. No dignity. No aplomb. Just a blundering, embarrassing knack for saying the wrong thing at almost every turn. He sorely needs a Jeeves – or an Aunt Agatha.

  7. Lisa Danielle says:

Ah, “they’re just like us!” PR to push back against the Jan Moir article and overall underwhelming tour, it seems.

Just found out that no members of the BRF attended Queen Fabiola’s funeral today. There are 15 working royals and none of them could attend? It seems to back up those rumors that they really think they’re ahead of the “continental” royals.

    • LAK says:

That Jan Moir article made me laugh irrespective of opinion therein.

Also, have you seen the twitter reaction of the royal reporters??!

One of them has promised an opinion piece in this sunday’s edition of the express.

      Snippety snip!

      • Lisa Danielle says:

Yes, Camilla Tominey especially! She said she called and suggested a public speaking coach for Kate but was laughed at. Even Richard Palmer was being snarky.

      • Vava says:

loving it, and it’s about time I’d say. William’s enjoyment of the American Press obviously was noticed by the British Press.

    • notasugarhere says:

It is very strange that the BRF didn’t send anyone to Belgium. I would assume they were sent an invite, but that is an assumption. The least the BRF could do is trot out Edward and Sophie. Empress Michiko at 80 made the trip, but she was a personal friend. Her bow as the coffin passed made me tear up.

      • Lisa Danielle says:

Apparently Queen Elizabeth doesn’t generally go to funerals, but she went to Badouins so I assumed someone would go at least. I’d heard that Philip would be going, and if those rumors had any stock I hope it doesn’t mean that he’s fallen ill again. You can tell it was important to Michiko, flying all the way from Tokyo to attend! Mathilde looked really broken up too.

      • Kori says:

The Foreign Office actually decides who the representative should be and presents that to Queen. I think their recommendation for this stank though–the British Ambassador? Blah. The Queen usually doesn’t attends funerals–she made an exception for Baudoin because she was on holiday in Scotland at the time and there was criticism of her for not originally planning to attend. Especially because he had personally attended the funeral of her father in 1952.

Ever since WW1, the British Royal Family has distanced themselves from their continental relations. I don’t think that will change as Charles and William come to the throne. The Wessexes are usually the ‘go to’ couple for weddings, etc…The Brits usually don’t send the monarch or the heir to these events. It’s a shame because the continental relations are related to the British royal family. The King of Sweden and the Queen of Denmark are both great-great-grandchildren of Queen Victoria (just like Elizabeth II); the Belgian royals are from the house of Coburg like the British (Leopold I of Belgium was Victoria’s Uncle); the Norwegian King is 2nd cousin to Elizabeth II–his mother, Queen Maud, was a British princess (youngest sister of Elizabeth’s grandfather George V); the Spanish King Felipe is a great-great-great-grandson of Victoria (as well as the son of a Greek princess and cousin to Philip) and the Dutch, while only very distantly related, have close personal ties given that they, like the Norwegians, spent a good deal of WW2 in England. And the Scandinavians, like the Spanish, Luxembourg & Belgian monarchies are also descended from Christian IX of Denmark–as are both Philip AND Elizabeth II. So the ties of blood are definitely there and strong, there’s just a choice of being relatively isolated. I don’t think they think they are ‘better’, I think they just have a post-WW1 and post-WW2 wariness of continental entanglements. After WW1, there was a conscious decision to seek marital partners from within the British aristocracy. Marina of Greece (Duchess of Kent) in 1934 and Philip of Greece (Lt Philip Mountbatten by the time he married) in 1947 and are the only 2 foreign royal marriages since WW2–though foreign commoners have married Prince Michael of Kent, Lord Nicholas Windsor and the Duke of Gloucester. The BRF has just stayed away from the foreign marriage mart and that’s reflected in the loosening of ties of friendship, sadly. Because the foreign houses really put on the bling for their marriages–gown and tiara please–unlike the modern BRF which goes much plainer in their dress.

      • notasugarhere says:

Sophie attended the funeral of the President of Zambia in November. They send someone for that (true a state funeral) but not to Belgium. As Kori shows, most of the European royals are family in some way. King Baudouin’s sister was Josephine-Charlotte (late wife of GD Jean of Luxembourg). GD Jean is close to the BRF, having served as a member of the British Army in WWII as part of the Irish Guards.

Some rumors online as to this being partisan politics, diplomatic reason why a member of the BRF wouldn’t be allowed to go to Belgium. W&K&H were just there in August for WWI commemoration. Are we to believe something has gone seriously wrong in the relationship between Belgium and the UK since then?

      • Kori says:

I do have one correction to my earlier–Baudoin was NOT at the funeral of George VI. His brother was. I had in my memory an image of him at an event but it must have been for something else.

This became clear to me when I was reading another article (that Baudoin wasn’t there) and the author wrote that “The British Royal Family had had a very cold relation with the Belgian Royal Family since 1952, when King Baudouin, against the wish of his people and the British wishes, refused to break protocol and attend the funeral of King George VI in London and Windsor. Belgian protocol had it that the King could only attend a funeral in a foreign country if he had already visited that country in state. Since the King was only reigning since July 1951 and he had not yet visited the United Kingdom he thus refused the invitation to attend the funeral and sent his brother the Prince of Liège instead. This froze the very good relation which had existed between the British and the Belgian sovereigns and this was confirmed when in the summer of 1959 the British Royal Family refused the invitation to attend the wedding of the Prince of Liège and Donna Paola Ruffo di Calabria. In return, and as most European royal families did, the Belgian Court sent no representative to the wedding of Princess Margaret and the photographer Mr. Anthony Armstrong Jones, seen by the European royalty as a too unequal wedding and thus unworthy of their attendance. However, HM Queen Elizabeth II did send representation to the royal wedding of King Baudouin and Queen Fabiola. Nevertheless, it might be understood as a little revenge from the British Court, since the Queen sent precisely Princess Margaret and Mr. Armstrong Jones in their first foreign representation, instead of sending her husband or other member of the Royal Family.”

As I’ve posted before, I wish there was more coverage to the non-British royals. There is tons of juicy gossip going back decades in there. And they bring out the bling for their weddings so there’s more chance for jewelry/clothing discussion. 🙂 I seem to remember back when I was a teen, the other monarchies getting more attention in the press but it’s virtually non-existent now. You’d think William & Kate were the first royals to visit NYC in forever when there have been several royal visits to that city and others in the US–and 2 Princesses (Eugenie and Madeleine) currently reside there. But it doesn’t get the coverage.

Read the comments in the DM article – seems the BRF made a faux pas according to their own citizens.

      • Feeshalori says:

Those photos really do wrench at the heart. I guess the British can’t even understand their own royal family, either.

      • ArtHistorian says:

The photos definitely showed that Queen Paola was greatly loved by her family.

“The agenda of the royal family members were so full, none of them were able to make it. ” – British royal family spokesperson.

Kate Middleton didn’t get the memo. She was apparently caught shopping at Peter Jones the same day as the funeral. https://twitter.com/streatevents

    • Dany says:

yes, it´s strange how the Windsors always stay away. I think they truly believe that they are the better ones.

The continental royals have very good relationships with each other. The Scandinavian and BeNeLux royals are very close and often spend time with each other in private.
Edward and Sophie are the only british royals having “regular” contact with the other royal houses because they are the official royal wedding guests.

Charles knows the other houses from short state visits all few years, but William? With 30+ he is the same age as the european CrownPrinces/Princesses, but he doesn´t know them personally. I would think having contact with people “in the same boat” is better than having only Eton-boys/ british aristo sycophants as friends? No wonder William is such a lightweight. Better the big fish in his own pond than a small one in the ocean, right?

      • wolfpup says:

Good point. William acted like his was a youngster in a candy shop. I’m glad that he was happy to be here, but was also very surprised at his lack of skill in being a diplomat…he was just such entitled being – and Americans don’t believe in that!

      • ArtHistorian says:

The Queen of Denmark and the King of Sweden are first cousins – and Margrethe’s mother Ingrid of Denmark and Sweden took a very keen interest in her Swedish family. She personally mentored Silvia when she became queen. The Norwegian royal house descends from a grandson of Christian IX and there are very close ties of friendship between, both between the younger and the older generations. I remember one event in Denmark (Margrethe’s 70th birthday I think) which was held at Fredensborg Castle where Mary and Frederik lived in an annex at the time. When the time came for the guests to arrive, the CP couples of Denmark, Sweden and Norway strolled casually over the courtyard to the main castle in all their finery because they had all been staying together in Frederik and Mary’s house.
        http://gfx.dagbladet.no/labrador/160/160748/16074875/jpg/active/978x.jpg
I also think that Mette-Marit and Haakon of Norway, Victoria of Sweden and Pavlos of Greece are Prince Christian’s god-parents.
        http://activphoto.photoshelter.com/image/I0000EeM.4SjeWVM

        PS.
I didn’t know that Empress Michiko had a close friendship with Fabiola. I just noticed her at the funeral because she is such an amazingly elegant old lady.

      • Kori says:

@arthistorian And the Belgians are closely linked to the Swedish monarchy. The late Queen’s mother-in-law (though she didn’t know her) was the Swedish born Princess Astrid. Astrid was very much the Princess Diana of her day but with a blissful marital union. Beautiful, charitable, much adored, hands-on mother…and one who lost her life way too soon in a tragic car accident.

Astrid was the niece of Gustav V of Sweden and the cousin of Gustav Adolf (I forget the numbers 🙂 ). Gustav Adolf’s grandson is the current King. Astrid’s sister Martha was Crown Princess of Norway and the mother of the current King Harold–so Fabiola’s husband Baudoin was Harold’s first cousin. Astrid’s mother Ingeborg was a Danish princess so that links the family back to Denmark. There are multiple other links as well.

But a large number of the mourners were direct relations today. The Luxembourg house was in full force–the former Grand Duke Jean (abdicated for his son Henri) was married to Baudoin’s sister Josephine-Charlotte so he and Fabiola were in-laws. Despite his age and frailty, he attended today as did Grand Duke Henri, Grand Duchess Marie Theresa and Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and his wife Stephanie. The Danish Queen Margarethe (whose mother Ingrid was considered a 4th daughter by Astrid’s mother Ingeborg–who helped raise her after Ingrid’s mother’s death when she was small), the Swedish King Carl Gustav, former King Juan Carlos of Spain (a more distant relation through Queen Victoria and Christian IX of Denmark but his grandmother Victoria Eugenie was Fabiola’s godmother as she was a Spanish aristocrat) and Queen Sofia, Norway’s King Harold and his sister Princess Astrid and former Queen, now Princess, Beatrix of the Netherlands were all present today.

      • ArtHistorian says:

The family lines of the European RFs are tangled indeed. There’s a reason Christian IX was called Europe’s father-in-law and Queen Victorian Europe’s grandmother.

        Funny factoid:
Constantin and Anne-Marie of Greece both descend from Christian IX. She on her father’s side, he on his father’s and mother’s side.

      • notasugarhere says:

AH, I think the Fabiola-Michiko friendship dates to Belgian support of Michiko and Akihito’s relationship (the couples wed within 2 years of each other). Akihito chose a commoner bride and it wasn’t going over well with the Imperial Household and others.

Like how Haakon and MM were some of the few royals to attend the Charles and Camilla nuptials. Charles had supported Haakon and MM’s relationship, so they returned the favor. We might see a closer relationship between the BRF and NRF in the future once/if Charles and Haakon become kings.

      • ArtHistorian says:

From what I understand QEII is also close to the Norweigian RF. I just think that the BRF likes to keep these relationships private. It just looks different because many of the other European RF are so obviously and publicly very close. Often through recent intermarriages – in contrast the BRF has married with Britain for several generations (apart from QEII).

      • Kori says:

@Arthistorian Yes they are dense. Constantine and Anne Marie are both descended from both Victoria and Christian X–sometimes more than once. QV–Victoria–Sophie–Paul–Constantine and QV–Victoria–Wilhelm II–Victoria Louise–Frederike–Constantine. QV–Arthur–Margaret–Ingrid–Anne Marie. CIX–George I–Constantine I–Paul–Constantine II and CIX–Frederick VIII–Christian X–Frederick IX–Anne Marie

  11. Lizzy1013 says:

I couldn’t understand the audio, what did the person say to her?

  12. Jenna says:

After seeing the video, I can’t say I think her eye-rolling was a bad thing at all. It looks more like a little teasing/joking thing, like “Hey, Duchess, I’m going to pretend to boss you around! Wrap! Wrap!”, “Oh, my, such a taskmaster!”. I think it actually shows a bit of a sense of humor on her part. But then my humor operates mostly via snark and sarcasm so what do I know…

    • wolfpup says:

Certainly she did not display the gravitas of Diana. Nor the graciousness. It looked like she was doing what she was told, and hiding her real feelings about the matter. To me it shows that she is not really serious about her “work”.

    • MinnFinn says:

I assumed Kate was trying to be funny/cute, but once I watched the video, it was clear to me it was pure mean-girl.

      • Vava says:

At first I thought she was trying to be cute too, then my impression from the video changed that. She came off kind of snotty.

      • FLORC says:

I think a few of us wanted to cut Kate a break. We would see ourselves rolling our eyes at that too. Only we’re not Kate. We don’t have Kate’s position. That’s how we can get away with that behavior. She can’t. She needs to be hyper aware her every blink is caught on camera. Atleast on work trips sitting infront of dozens of cameras actively snapping. It didn’t come off well. Even if it was innocent.

    • Megan says:

I assume the whole present wrapping bit was to get photos of Kate in front of the giant Toys R Us banner in the room. Since it was a corporate photo op, did she really need to wrap more than one present?

      • wolfpup says:

Apparently not. Maybe they needed another angle.

It surprised me when Kate laid the flowers, at the 9/11 Memorial, that the period of silence ended abruptly, when the man standing next to her said, times up. Very strange these photo ops.

  14. anne_000 says:

That top photo of her in the dress… her hand position is always in front of her crotch, so of course, when one hand is holding William’s hand, the other one is still in front of her crotch like she’s protecting it. It looks so weird and unnatural.

From what I remember of yesterday’s Jan Moir piece, I think she’s right in that W&K are downplaying themselves so well as if they’re just like everybody else that they’re not interesting but bland.

    • Feeshalori says:

Can you post a link to the Moir piece? I’d love to read it.

    • wolfpup says:

He wants to be a helicopter pilot, and she wants to be a stay at home mom. They seem to neither like, or excel at the royal thing. They seem bland because they do no work, and have no passion, for anything but fun. People are more important than elephants.

      • Feeshalori says:

And when you come to New York with all its excitement, pizzazz and dazzle, you can’t seek to impress if you are as dull as dishwater and have no viable credentials to stand on other than your royal title. It became glaringly obvious when they met a lot of movers and shakers during this visit; what a contrast. They don’t have a “power couple” persona – at least, not yet, if they ever will.

      • CynicalCeleste says:

Yes. Rather than amp up their glamour and mystique as jan moir suggests, they would do well to increase their gravitas.

      • Megan says:

Humans are a robust species, elephants are endangered. Why do humans out rank other sentient and intelligent species? It’s their world, too.

      • bluhare says:

I don’t agree with you wolfpup. People are not more important than elephants. They are as important as elephants. I don’t think the world is our oyster; I think it’s a place that should be shared and we do a crappy job of it. With our over dominance, we will destroy it and destroy it for everyone, not just us. Well, except perhaps for cockroaches.
