Tom Hiddleston’s ‘Kong: Skull Island’ gets its release date pushed back

LMK-126192

Back in September, Tom Hiddleston signed on to a project that was called Skull Island. The aim of the film is to tell the story of Skull Island, the home of King Kong and various other magical animals, and I guess the story might have been intended as a “sequel” to Peter Jackson’s version of King Kong? Something like that. I actually sort of forgot about this project because Tommy was off preparing for and then filming I Saw the Light, and then all of the Marvel casting news came out and it sounded like Tommy was going to be Marvel’s Company Man for several more years. Well, as it turns out, Tommy was supposed to start filming the live-action stuff sometime early next year. But now everything is getting pushed back?

Legendary pushed back its fantasy actioner Skull Island and gave it a clearer title — now it’s Kong: Skull Island, in case you didn’t know which King of the movie apes called the primordial paradise home — as the company shuffled some tentpole dates around today.

The origin tale is set on the fictional island home of King Kong, where a team of explorers led by Tom Hiddleston wade into the treacherous jungle in what Legendary describes as a “new, distinct timeline” within the iconic beast’s canon. Helmed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (The Kings Of Summer), the 3D and IMAX 3D pic is moving from November 4, 2016, to March 10, 2017.

[From Deadline]

Still no word about when they’re actually going to film Kong: Skull Island. And I guess if they’re putting “Kong” in the title, Original Gangster Kong will make an appearance. So… Tommy’s Kong will come out in March ’17 and then Thor: Ragnarok will come out July ’17. My guess is that they’ll have to work around Tom’s Marvel schedule too. And when does The Night Manager film? Hm. After having a relatively quiet year, I think he’s going to be in the news a lot in the next several years. YAY! Dancing Bear Hiddles is coming back!

  1. **sighs** says:

Isn’t March where movies go to die?

    • Lilacflowers says:

Grand Budapest Hotel didn’t die. With summer weekends filling up, studios are moving the escapist blockbuster season earlier and later.

Legendary sent the script into re-write a few weeks ago, so it make sense to push it back.

Tom is going to have a busy 2017.

      • **sighs** says:

GBH wasn’t exactly a blockbuster type, though. I realize they sort of run out of dates. March just doesn’t seem to be particularly great historically.

      • Lilacflowers says:

It hasn’t been but studios are starting to experiment with scheduling. Captain America was a test last year and they were all surprised at how well it did. “In the Heart of the Sea” is coming out this March. Studios are jockeying to get their films open dates so they’ll get seen and March seems like a good time to them.

      • jammypants says:

The first Hunger Games was a March release and it made tons of mula. Should be fine. I will see it no matter! =D

    • 'P'enny says:

do you want to join Delorb in her Hiddle-put downs about March release dates.

with the outpouring of comic movies in the next few years, they cant squeeze everything into the summer holidays.

      • **sighs** says:

Yikes, ladies. I love Hiddles. No shade at all, merely concern. Calm down!

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Sighs, people can get a bit defensive on Hiddles here. Cumby used to be the golden calf, but no more.

I too feel that this does not portend well for an aspiring blockbuster. Fizzy Hiddles will be fine though, and we’ll be see a lot of the dancing bear soon.

      • jammypants says:

I haven’t seen her around in ages though.

        @Miss Jupitero, love Fizzy Hiddles!

      • Allegra says:

I “found” Delorb in Keanu´s thread last week. Well, I guess we both are Keanu´s fan.

      • 'P'enny says:

I was having a bad day yesterday ”soz”

    • M.A.F. says:

That is January and February. March and April are starting to become very good months for movies. I think the Hunger Games was released in March and one of the Marvel films in April.

    • Crocuta says:

Films proverbially die in January and February, because the average movie goer doesn’t go to the cinema more than 3 or 4 times a year and many “spend” one of their dates in December’s family movie season when everyone is more keen to spend money. In January, the fun is over, the money is fading and people are more careful again. That’s why it’s a bad time to release movies. But that doesn’t extend to March usually. Even February can be OK already. But January is a complete NO NO.

Also, movies get dumped to January/February/other bad dates when during or after filming the team decides this film just isn’t working. Skull Island hasn’t even start filming yet so if the reason for move was the film makers low faith, they would cancel the project, not move it to a “bad” date. There’s still time for cancellation.

My previous paragraph wasn’t for you personally, it was a general remark because I’ve seen in other places, like IMBD, that people suggested it moved due to low faith. (Now, I don’t want to see another King Kong and I won’t see this one, and I think it’s a terrible idea of a film too, but lets at least be a bit objective.)

      • Lilacflowers says:

I’m not a King Kong fan but I know people who don’t go to movies regularly who will turn out for this. And my octogenarian aunt is excited for it.

      • Crocuta says:

Well, some people will always show up. And King Kong is a popular character no doubt. Thank heaven we don’t all like the same films. My point was that in general, the season after the holidays is kind of a quiet zone. But it doesn’t last until March. That’s 1/4 of the year.

    • Josa says:

@Crocuta. “Skull Island hasn’t even start filming yet so if the reason for move was the film makers low faith, they would cancel the project, not move it to a “bad” date. There’s still time for cancellation.” EXACTLY! Why would they bother to spend millions to make it if they don’t have any faith to begin with. These talk of Skull Island moving to March to be dumped makes no logical sense, it’s only hater talk.

      • Josa says:

Batman Vs Superman is also scheduled for March, of 2016. It was moved from May 6 to March 25 to avoid Captain America: Civil War. March isn’t the best of months, but certainly has potential, in the eyes of schedulers for Studios.

  2. scarf girl says:

Really looking forward to The Night Manager and more Hiddles.

  3. philae says:

Actually, The Night Manager wasn’t confirmed, same for RichardII. At this moment, he doesn’t have any filming for 2015. Hopefully something official will be announced soon.
And I hope he’ll drop this film that seems as lame as Godzilla.

    • 'P'enny says:

it was no coincidence that the news about the script going for a rewrite release came out the same time as Night Manager rumours.

Also , its only a four month delay, and there is no news about pushing back filming? He could still be heading to N/Ireland in Spring as planned. PLus, they makers must be well aware that they can’t push filming into 2016 because of his Marvel commitments.

Knowing Hiddles, as we all do, he has his calendar sorted.

      • philae says:

It had nothing to do with The Night Manager.
And the script didn’t go into rewriting, Max Borenstein did the first draft but then he went on to write the next installment of Godzilla for Legendary, John Gatins is doing the following draft. Both writers were credited in this latest update.

Nobody knows when they were going to start shooting Skull Island so the idea that he would be busy in SPring this year for this film is all yours. If the news about RichardII is true, he should be doing that next. Not Skull Island.

      • 'P'enny says:

I mean’t that Tom may have realised he had a gap in his schedule and starting thinking oooh what else can I do. Not that Night Manager had anything to do with the movement of Skull Island. [Sorry if that wasn’t clear in my post]

There is a film production site which someone pointed to on IMDB board stating that Skull Island was filming in March 2015. He mentioned to fans during filming of High Rise he was returning to N/Ireland early spring. Legendary filmed Dracula all over N.Ireland and there is a great island off the coast of N.Ireland used for the new Star Wars film which maybe used for this film.

      • philae says:

Wasn’t that about a tweet of someone who overheard him saying that he would be back in Belfast in January (not March)? Sounds quite iffy, but we know now that the first 2 weeks of January are Marvel’s, if true maybe he’ll be NI for Loki.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

My magic 8 ball is predicting that Hiddles might back out of Skull Island for scheduling alone. I badly want NM to happen, but I have heard the financing is not all there yet. Surely Thor 3’s schedule will be announced soon.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Marvel has line of movies to film before Thor. Ant Man just wrapped; the AOU reshoot next month, then Capt. America, Guardians, and Dr. Strange before Thor. So after the re-shoot next month, he probably has most of 2015 for other projects. He actually hasn’t confirmed anything. I’m hoping Richard II, Night Manager, Skull Island, then some stage work before he disappears into Loki sometime in 2016.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Is Richard II even in preproduction? I thought that was a rumor at best. I’m rooting for NM. But not until he has had some vacation. His schedule had been ridiculous.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@MissJupitero, the RII info comes from two interviews James Ivory have to Italian magazines. Nothing more than that is known. Tom hasn’t announced or confirmed any coming projects. That’s why I said I hope he will do it.

      • icerose says:

I am curious as to why none of these not even Skull are confirmed on IMBD but I think maybe Tom has leant after past films fell through not to get people’s hopes up.

      • icerose says:

I am not happy re Skull but so far his choices have payed off -so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

      • Josa says:

Skull is confirmed on IMDB. Since it’s still in development stage, it’s listed under Projects In Development on the right hand side bar.

      • jammypants says:

RII is more of wishful thinking on the director’s part. It’s not confirmed.

      • icerose says:

@Miss Jupitero Night Manager was picked up by one of the American networks in a buying war and they will contribute to the production costs, the other is BBC although they are being cagey about it ,It was all over the financial papers and Variety with articles explaining the net works expansion programme etc

      • icerose says:

Second mention of R11was not by the director but someone who works within the organisation so it does have some development potential

      • jammypants says:

@ice, I’m not sure about that. Isn’t BBC producing and AMC the distributor? If anything, the production company that produces most of Le Carre’s work will be chipping in creatively…maybe even financially? I doubt BBC alone can back the whole thing since it’s UK public owned.

      • icerose says:

“”The drama starring Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston is being developed in partnership with the BBC, which will air the series in the U.K. Ink Factory (A Most Wanted Man) is also producing. David Farr (Hanna, Spooks) will pen the adaptation. AMC will also have partial ownership and will co-produce the series with Ink Factory and BBC One.””

It seems to be a three way producing but my guess is that if the BBC is incvolved in producing it will also be a financial contributer. Plus the money from AMC will also provide finance.

      • jammypants says:

Very nice! That’s good to hear because from reading the book, it sounds very expensive. There are so many locations in the story.

  4. Lilacflowers says:

Legendary plans a series of Kong films with the intent to eventually have Kong clash with Godzilla. I know people who don’t go to movies at all who went to see Godzilla and they’re looking forward to this film too.

And my 86 year old aunt is super excited about a new Kong movie.

  5. Mia4S says:

That title needs to change, it screams cheap B movie. Sadly Godzilla’s human characters were worthless blocks of wood so I don’t hold out much hope for these movies being anything more than good action and effects.

  6. j.eyre says:

By the time they get to filming, this thing will be a musical:

“AventureTom and the Kongettes” Opening on Groundhog Day in a theater one town over!

    • Lilacflowers says:

      In surround sound, Imax 3-d!

    • 'P'enny says:

no more Tom singing in camp musical style, pleae.

    • icerose says:

Well he has all the skills for it . Just hope he stays away from the Bollywood type film legendary is also playing with. After the horror of Zorrobatch, Tommywood might be more entertaining but equally as horrific.
Now a Fred Astaire bio he could rock-the suits, the dancing ,the singing the smoothness is just up his street

    • Marty says:

@Miss J- Speaking of dancing idiots, CHemboy got a new haircut. It’s giving me…feelings.

      http://41.media.tumblr.com/93e7dcfbadc8b9dbfb179267d731cae4/tumblr_ngho2z9Qhz1tttzz8o1_1280.jpg

    • T.Fanty says:

I would watch THE HELL out of that movie.

    • j.eyre says:

Hmmmm – @Marty, my dear – I will leave you to that haircut, I will be having a moment or two over the GQ spread Kaiser just brought to my attention.

So let’s figure this out, Fanty – why do the Kongettes join him? Or does he join them? What is their combined quest… that can only be truly realized with a kickline?

      • Lilacflowers says:

At first, the Kongettes don’t join him. They are at odds with one another until a kid kong is in peril from dinosaurs and he risks life and limb to save it. They nurse him back to health with pudding and multiple viewings of The Jungle Book, then they all prepare to defend against a Godzilla invasion

      • j.eyre says:

Oh heavens – yes, Fleurs de Lilas! AventureTom would risk his life for a kid kong, wouldn’t he?

Maybe even another layer – infighting among the Kongettes – they disagree over kick height, how many feathers their headpieces should have, choice of music – and AdventureTom acts as a unifier to the herd (??? – what is the collective noun for Kongettes, a Wray of Kongettes?) which is how they are strong enough to stave off the dinosaurs.

As for Godzilla – they’re screwed; Godzilla rocks.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Perhaps, after some initial misunderstandings Adventurr Tom realizes that the Kongettes and Godzilla are in mutual danger. He convinces them to put aside their differences and work together to save the people of Seattle from the invasion of those things from Pacific Rim. Special cameo appearances from Charlie Hunnam and the ghost of Idris Elba.

      • icerose says:

@Lilacflowers can we include Cillian Murphy and Harry Lloyd .Harry could be Kid Kong and Cillian in drag could be one of the more coquettish Kongettes. In fact all the Kongettes could be our favourites in drag, We know Sean Bean is up for it and I think Colin has had his film moments as well. Mark could be persuaded I am sure.

  7. ellesbelles says:

Its a new tom post. Thats all I care about. Hopefully hes back home recuperating and enjoying his friends and family. I’m looking forward to the 2015 releases, especially istl

  8. Ratherbeme says:

This news makes me think Marvel is planning to break tumblr and Tom has a role in the Dr Strange movie and there was some Marvel contract woowoo that got the date pushed back.

They did it in 2013, why not do it again.

    • ellesbelles says:

Apparently in marvel cannon there are clashes between strange and loki, so I wouldn’t put it past marvel to tease every one.

    • Lilacflowers says:

No studio is scheduling big films on Marvel release dates. But if they were just avoiding a Marvel film, they could have moved a few weeks in either direction.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

He had three more films on his contract: Thor 3, and then he will be in both of the next Avengers films, right? Perhaps he will lock horns with Doctor Strange then?

Anything past this would require a new contract and new salary negotiations. I would be intrigued to see how Marvel handles this. They don’t like to spend money.

      • icerose says:

I think they just might pick him up again because Loki is one of those characters that can be a catalyst as well as straddle 2 sides, Not sure I want.

      • Lilacflowers says:

True, they don’t but they did do some contract amendments after some of the actors learned how much RDJ got from The Avengers in comparison to what they received.

      • lunchcoma says:

I’d be surprised if they keep Loki on once Tom’s contract runs out. Marvel’s game is to build up a stable of characters who they can combine in different ways at a reasonable cost. Loki holds up the Thor franchise, which is one of their weaker ones, but the Captain America movies print money based on the strength of the protagonist alone, and they have several years to develop other popular antagonists.

Depending on how his career goes, Tom may be tired of Loki by then as well. He obviously wanted to stay on the Marvel ship when The Dark World came out, but by the time the third Avengers movie comes out, he’ll have been playing Loki for nearly a decade. At some point, I suspect he’ll want to move on and have a schedule that’s a little more free for taking on long term projects.

      • icerose says:

@lunchcoma you could be right but at the moment they see him as their most successful villain. Personally I would love it if he left because the danger is that he is jus put in to bring in the fans.
No way of knowing which way Tom will go. It probably depended on what else is on offer and whether Skull be comes a new franchise for him

      • Lilacflowers says:

@icerose, it is possible to have more than one franchise. RDJ has Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes. Jennifer Lawrence has Hunger Games and X-Men. And they have time to do other work. The MCU is becoming quite large. They could renew or extend an actor’s contract but still keep the appearances occasional and brief so there isn’t over-saturation, like Agent Coulson, Maria Hill, The Collector, The Other, Heimdall, The Warriors Three, Pepper Potts.

    • icerose says:

I know I have heard that possibility mooted elsewhere and it would insure Strange rocked the box office,

  9. Browniecakes says:

Where are the candid I S T L wrap party photos I know must exist somewhere?

  10. InvaderTak says:

Still holding out for a Robin Hood men in tights remake.

  11. Oh Hey says:

I’m hoping someone does a Fred Astaire biopic with TH in the lead role, that would be phenomenal.

    • MtnRunner says:

I concur. Wholeheartedly. Moar dancing Hiddles!

    • icerose says:

Tom has Fred Astaire’s elegance and light touch

      • Anne tommy says:

No, Fred was too thin, it’s not good for him….more parts for Coriolanus type Tom please

      • MtnRunner says:

Well damn… I have to agree. He had a fine set of guns as Cori.

        *fans self*

      • jammypants says:

He’ll have Coriolanus physique if he does TNM.

      • icerose says:

. Hank was positively anorexic Astaire was naturally slender as Tom is so I am not to worried about his weigh if he did play Astaire. In Coriolanus he was bulked up and bulking up as nice as it looks still cab have heath issues

      • Oh Hey says:

I think he’d do great as Astaire, he’s certainly slim and graceful enough but I wouldn’t mind seeing some more of Built Like a Brick Shithouse Tom either….

      • MtnRunner says:

Oh God, please let TNM be for reals… I want Brick Shithouse Tom to drool over.

And let him play Astaire at some point. Tuxedo Tom/Dancing Hiddles would make my year.

  12. ellesbelles says:

Ok, ranking Tom performances that I’ve seen from meh to hearts eyes

    – Exhibition: Lack of screen time, the move as a whole was really bad
    – A Waste of Shame: Lack of Screen Time, meh movie overall
-The Gathering Storm- Lack of screen time, overall movie was interesting
-Casualty- he was adorable, but I didn’t find the show enjoyable
    – Archipelago- Got better the second and third time I watched it
    -Thor- Needs more Loki
    -TDW- Needs more Loki
-Miss Austin Regrets- Loved the show overall
    -The Avengers- because Loki
-Coriolanus- Hot aggressive muscular Tom did things to me
-Unrelated- Took a few watchings, but this is one of my favorite performances. The movie overall is fantastic
-Wallander- LOVE the series, needed more Magnus

    Tied for First:
-The Hollow Crown- Hal is perfection
    – Return to Cranford- Romantic Tom did things to me

    Bits I wont watch
War Horse- not enough screen time, horses dying, the look in his eyes when he knows hes going to die breaks my heart
Midnight in Paris- F U Woody Allen

    • MtnRunner says:

Glad to hear you enjoyed Archipelago after repeated viewings. I, in turn, have gone back to Unrelated and no longer cringe. He is a babe in that one. I’d put HC, the two Hogg films and Cranford and TDW in my top 5.

I too, hated Exhibition. Didn’t care for his character in Wallander as he always questioned everything, but never showed any real growth. He looked good tho’; the blond curls have grown on me. I usually prefer him with dark hair.

Can’t wait to see the CP trailer due out this month.

      • ellesbelles says:

Exhibition was horrible. Jammy said it best on the Queen Tilda thread. His parts were not long enough and the rest was pretentious crap.

I like Wallander because I like police procedural dramas and Kenneth Branagh, so I would like it by default. I wish they had fleshed his character out more, but I’ll take what I can get.

There is something about the Oakley character in Unrelated that just gets to me. Usually I HATE that kind of man. Snotty frat boy-esque jerk, but he plays it so well. Not to mention the awkward dancing

      • Gracie says:

In a distant, remotely relevant way I get Exhibition. Mind you I am only 40 mins into a two hour film though. Every time I put in on for about 10 mins and get back to it every now and then. I get the loneliness and isolation aspect in it. Middle-aged woman having no kids and spend majority of her time at home – not saying that all middle-aged women in similar situations live like that and can’t have a more upbeat lifestyle, but I sort of understand what the film is getting at. She goes to friends’ place for dinner but they talk about things she’s not interested in, and she probably doesn’t spend enough time around groups of people to have a tolerance for that. Or at least try to engage and direct the conversation to the areas she might be interested in. Or she might have done that in the past but Hogg chose to show the more passive-aggressive approach. And I thought the bit when she was hugging a stone in their garden? really stuck in my head. Creativity is not fluid all the time, and it’s often not target orientated or task orientated unless she has a specific deadline. Hogg chose to show those people’s vulnerability and alternative ways of life, if that’s the right phase. It’s almost disillusioned and self-indulging: their home is their haven, outside it, they don’t know what to do.

I watched Unrelated the other night and was okay with it, to my surprise. The thing about Tom is he brings different facets to the usual douchebag cliche. Like Oakley, yes, he’s a snobby brat but when he smiles, you just can’t hate someone with that smile. The same with Freddie’s tears, when he says he’s not sadistic with tears in his eyes, you want to believe him, and you do believe him.

    • icerose says:

Hal ,Henry V and Coriolanus are on my top list/
Only Lovers Left Alive is up the list as well. Tom is pure decadent snarky elegance and pouty toy boy.
I prefer the Thor films to Avengers mainly because Josh never used Loki’s true potential
Unrelated is my favourite Hogg but Archipelago captures elements of my family so well-it gets an A plus .I did see both of them before I cottoned on to Tom and liked them anyway.
I love Tom in Surbuban Shoot out -his comic timing ,innocence and sincerity is brilliant
I have always watched Cranford even before I started to take an interest in him-ditto Miss Austen. He held his own against the stella cast and second time around I appreciated him more
I love dumb blond Tom in Wallander and he rocked the gun scene episode
War Horse and Midnight in Paris were good films and he aced his small parts.

      • ellesbelles says:

I still intend to see OLLA, and I need to check out suburban shootout as well. I wish there was video of Othello and Ivanov and Cymbeline as well, not to mention video of stories before bedtime.. omg

      • icerose says:

@ellesbelles there is CD of the Donmar Othello which I love to listen to and yes to releasing Cymbeline and Ivanov

      • Gracie says:

The Othello audio is on youtube. It helps with the understanding of the play. Reading Shakespeare is still a little too dry for my liking.

@elles, *hint* *hint* maybe adding the file to your cloud?

@icerose, someone said in the comments section of a very brief song and dance from Cymbeline. Apparently there is only one copy in a library somewhere. 🙁 Should we start a petition for it to be released?

      • ellesbelles says:

@icy, Othello is on youtube as well. I keep meaning to convert and pop it into the cloud. Last week was madness between work and exams so I neglected it terribly. I cant for the promotional interviews for his 2015 projects. New clips!

      • ellesbelles says:

        lol Gracie, JINX!!!

      • MtnRunner says:

        *icerose*

Oh my, how could I forget OLLA?? Yes, that one would kick Archipelago out of the top 5. He was wonderful and sexy in that role.

The only Magnus scene that I really enjoyed was the rescue scene with Wallander’s daughter.

I have to check out Suburban Shootout now…

      • icerose says:

@Grace there has been one already but they have said that there are issues around actors contracts .They send it out for teaching purposes, Could we start a celeb bitch off shoot called Tom’s Shakespeare School.

I do like listening to Shakespeare as it really heightens your awareness of the words but it helps to know the play. Othello was voice porn. You had Tom, Cherifor and Ewan who was using his Scottish accent

      • Oh Hey says:

As much as Wallander beats on Magnus, saving his daughter’s life must have gotten him some huge brownie points. I need to watch Season 2 again to see if Kurt relapses to his grumpy self.

      • jammypants says:

I love that we’re talking about his work. I know this is a gossip site, but it’s a bit refreshing!

      • ellesbelles says:

@jammy, when it comes to Tom, I’ll leave the gossipy crap to TOBY. I’d much rather hang out and talk about what we love about Tom and why.

Plus none of us snipe at eachother if we disagree

      • Allegra says:

It is better to speak about Tom´s talent and about his movies than talking about facial cream that he puts or not on his face.

      • jammypants says:

I can’t pin that one on Ben. He got asked some really insipid questions. It’s only a matter of time when someone will ask him if he sleeps naked. He already got told he’s delicious in front of a film fest crowd (yikes!). He’s the current It guy so it’s expected. He does not help with the kinds of answers he gives, but I really don’t hate him for it. When Ben does get asked about his roles, his answers can be interesting. I do hate that he calls Turing a gay icon though. He’s not. He’s a martyr if anything. To me, he’s definitely a war hero and a computer science icon; in fact, he’s the father of computer science. Gay icon, NO. He never really fought for it. He just accepted things as they were and even gave in to conformity. That is no way in any shape iconic. It’s tragic.

      • Oh Hey says:

I think OLLA is by far my favorite so far, aside from Coriolanus. I loved Adam, sad git, disappointed in people and the world, cynical, but then had a very sweet and unexpected relationship with a ‘zombie’ (normal human) and wonderful with Eve, Tilda was delightful. Bigtime crushing on Adam. I never saw him as Tom in a wig, but as the character, a three dimensional person. And he can eyeroll like no one’s business.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

THC, Coriolanus, and OLLA top my list. Wallander is excellent and I love the pissy looks he gives throughout. Of course he owns Loki. I wait with great anticipation for CP and HR, though I still have my doubts about ISTL.

We are on the same page about Woody Allen. I did see MIP: I personally think is overrated, and I really disliked the script (“Oh look! Gertrude Stein! Oh look! Ernest Hemingway! And everyone instantly bonds to our tourist hero!”), but this is how I feel about most of Woody Allen’s films post the eighties era. TH is just fine, but I don’t think it is his best performance, not by a longshot, and I don’t think you are missing much.

      • ellesbelles says:

Beyond finding Allen films to be catering to a seemingly specific subset of film audiences, I have very personal reasons for blacklisting Allen films from my screen. Same for Polanski films. I don’t care how good they may be. I refuse to support people like that.

I’m really hoping ISTL is great. Crimson Peak makes me nervous because I dont like scary films, but I will go see it and soldier through. High Rise, the plot just sounds really cool

      • lunchcoma says:

I feel the same as you do, Miss Juiptero, and would perhaps take it a bit further. I didn’t even care for Allen’s films from the 70s and 80s that much, up to and including Annie Hall. I can recognize that some of them are very good movies, but Allen’s artistic sensibilities and the subjects he wants to explore just don’t work for me.

      • icerose says:

I am a Woody fan from way back and agree his newer films do not have as much appeal as his new ones,I enjoyed MIP just because of the walk through history but I have never been able to tolerate Owen Wilson for very long
I liked Tom’s turn as Fitzgerald but there was not enough of it to make it really interesting.
It is the same with War Hors bit he nails his final scene

      • jammypants says:

I really need to rewatch THC. It didn’t really impress me the first time. I was really put off by SRS’s Falstaff. He mumbles and bumbles and I didn’t find him very sympathetic.

      • Oh Hey says:

Falstaff was disappointingly dishonest, and didn’t learn his lesson when he was caught out before, he got what he deserved in the end.

    • lunchcoma says:

The Hollow Crown and Only Lovers Left Alive have been my favorites, though I greatly enjoyed the Marvel movies as well. Wallander rubbed me wrong, but that’s a personal thing – I dislike police procedurals unless they’re very unusual takes on the genre, and I didn’t care for Wallander enough to put up with lots of him in exchange for a little Magnus.

Coriolanus didn’t screen anywhere remotely close to me, though I hope it will come out on DVD one day. I skipped War Horse and Midnight in Paris for the same reasons you did.

      • Anne tommy says:

OMG Coriolanus, TH electrifying in it as an actor and a man…am going to go for a quick lie down, not good for my blood pressure at my age…there are probably ways and means lunchcoma…

      • ellesbelles says:

lunchcoma, if you google NTL Coriolanus and then click on Video, the full play is there in two parts. the link from china. it worked fine for me, and I ran a virus scan afterward just to be safe. Everything was clear. Thats how I was able to watch it. He is ridiculously good. The play itself affected me very deeply, beyond his performance

      • lunchcoma says:

        Thank you, ellesbelles!

I do think it’s rather silly that they don’t make some kind of purchasable download available. I can understand not wanting to discourage theater audiences from watching performances live or during the screenings, but after a certain amount of time has passed, I can’t imagine it making a difference in turnout.

      • jammypants says:

I’m going to be really unpopular by saying I’ve always felt Wallander was a vanity project for Branagh. It’s evidenced by the poor development of the supporting characters and dramatization of Wallander.

      • MtnRunner says:

jammypants, I have felt the same way. It was all about Branagh and the supporting cast was so underutilized. It would have been nice to see Wallander play off of another character like Magnus as in “The Killing”. Have you seen it? I love the chemistry between Linden and Holder in that series and it’s way more addictive since they don’t tie of loose ends until the last episode, much like 24.

      • **sighs** says:

War Horse is a great movie. The scope, the direction, the performances were all wonderful. TH was heartbreaking. OLLA was fine, but not really my cup of tea. Too meandering, but I enjoyed TH and TS. Archipelago and TDBS were…ugh…hard to get through. For both I more hated the direction than anything else. The acting performances were fine in both, save for Weisz in Blue Sea (which bothered me because I usually like her). I have to admit loving the Marvel movies. First thing I saw him in. He’s the one person in the whole superhero genre that made me sit up and say ( I think out loud) “who is THAT?”.
I actually agree with jammy about Wallender. It was obviously all about Branagh (who I adore) but there was almost no development for any other character but him.

      • jammypants says:

yea, I was told the original Wallander series is much much better. I may watch those at some point…maybe after my The Good Wife binge.

    • jammypants says:

I really enjoyed him as F Scott Fotzgerald in Midnight in Paris. Did you watch his scenes on Youtube? He’s quite debonair!

      also, you forgot OLLA!

      • ellesbelles says:

I havent seen OLLA yet! I did sneak a peek at some of the MIP scenes on youtube but thats as far as I’ll go. Anything involving supporting a WA film financially is never happening. I wont buy it or rent it.

I tried to get a copy of OLLA at best buy yesterday, but the one near my house is a smaller store and their blu-ray selection is limited. I will eventually order it online somehow

      • jammypants says:

do you have Redbox? I remember seeing at at some Redboxes.

      • MtnRunner says:

@jammypants is right. I picked one up from my local Redbox last week.

    • Deering says:

He’s terrific in The Deep Blue Sea with Rachel Weitz.

  13. Gracie says:

@icerose, I was talking to a friend last night and she told me there was a software called ‘Hola’ you could use to allow browsing Netfilx from US servers. I used it on Google chrome and it worked for me.

    • icerose says:

That sounds interesting -did you have to pay for USA Netflix as well as UK.

      • Gracie says:

No. You pay once and that’s it, as far as I know. Netfilx asked me to sign in since I initially had it as an app (Win 8). I just signed in and used Hola as a Google chrome add-on. You might need to open a different tab window every time you want to see a film/show not available to the U.K. just to get Hola to work. It’s a little tricky. I am still getting the hang of it, but so far it’s worked.

    • ellesbelles says:

Hola is fantastic. It enabled me to watch some of the ESTA bits even though I’m in the States

  14. jammypants says:

He looks so cute and happy in some of the photos.

  15. Lilacflowers says:

JK Simmons just joined the cast of KSi

  16. ellesbelles says:

As an aside, Queen Tilda was nominated for a Critics Choice Award for Snowpiercer!

    All hail Queen Tilda!

I tried to watch it and its not my kind of film, but congrats to her all the same! *throws confetti!*

    • Allegra says:

      Undoubtedly, great year for Tilda.
She got a nomination for best actress for her work in OLLA and now, another one for supporting role for Snowpiercer.
Now, can anyone tell me why Tom refused the lead role in this film?

      • Lilacflowers says:

Because it filmed the same time as TDW. Tilda and John Hurt went from OLLA to Snowpiercer and Tom went to film Thor

      • ellesbelles says:

Because Tilda and Tom on screen together again is too much perfect and the universe would fold in on itself? 😀

      • Allegra says:

        @Lilacflowers:
It´s a shame that Tom has to refuse so many good opportunities in order to honor the commitment he has with Marvel.
From what I can see in an interview during the Thor movie tour, he likes and appreciates the directors and South Korean films. It would be great if he could work with some of them.

        @ellesbelles:
Tom and Tilda together, it’s never enough.

      • lunchcoma says:

I’m not sure it was such a misfortune that he wasn’t able to take the role due to scheduling issues. He would have enjoyed filming, I suspect, but Snowpiercer had an agonizing editing process with Harvey Weinstein playing the role of the villain. My understanding is that it was quite stressful for both Evans and Swinton, who supported their director, Bong Joon-Ho. Of course, Tom had no idea that Harvey would get involved when those decisions were made, but I’m not sure he regrets not being involved.

    • jammypants says:

I like the concept and it looked very stylish, but I agree. It’s not my kind of film either. It didn’t feel fully fleshed out. I didn’t emotionally connect with the characters. Tilda is the best as usual though.

    • Oh Hey says:

Haven’t seen Snowpiercer yet – has anyone?

      • ellesbelles says:

I did, it’s beautifully shot, but not my favorite kind of film. I didnt hate it, but I wont watch it again. Chris Evans is growing on me. Very interested in his more grown up roles. A massive upgrade from the teenage drivel he used to do.

      • MtnRunner says:

Oh Hey, It’s graphic in its violence (I couldn’t watch), but worth it for SWINTON. She was amazeballs.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Chris is doing lots of charity work at home this holiday season.

      • Lucrezia says:

I’m a big sci-fi/fantasy fan, and I liked Snowpiercer a lot. But it’s not something I’d casually recommend to everyone. It’s definitely not your typical Hollywood film, it’s got that distinct foreign film vibe where the dramatic/emotional beats feel slightly off tune. What it does really well is world-building and dark fantasy.

I’d say it’s really important to go in knowing that it’s an allegory, with some fantastical elements. If you’re expecting a straight (realistic) action flick or hero story you’re going to be confused and disappointed. If you’re not expecting it to make 100% literal sense, then you can enjoy it for what it is.

  17. ellesbelles says:

    Ladies:

PS: If you need the link, send me a note, gmail is itsellesbelles, all one word x

    • Oh Hey says:

You be berry berry smaahhht. Thank you….

    • ellesbelles says:

ETA: Coriolanus Video part 1 is wonk. The whole part didnt transfer. It cuts off before the shower scene… thats no good. I’m working on it!

      • Gracie says:

@elles, I had the same problem when I was trying to convert Coriolanus. In the end I managed getting the full file using the software from the site. If you still have the same issue, I am happy to share my files. Just give me a shout.

      • ellesbelles says:

Gracie, its driving me mad. can you send them my way? If you have google drive, I think I can add you as a contributor

google drive or a gmail account that is

      • Gracie says:

I’m thinking how to do this. They’re about 700mb. Maybe if I upload to google drive, you can get them that way?

      • ellesbelles says:

Thanks Gracie! I tried to comment last night asking if you could email me and I had technical difficulties

      • Gracie says:

Did you get them okay? I was asking because I thought Gmail had a 20mb maximum for emails. But anyway. Glad to have helped. xxoo

    • allegra says:

Allow someone to add files on your account or Gracie, if you have an account, try to share with Elles.

    • icerose says:

if we have the original link will that work-I so want to see Coriolanus again

  18. Ellen says:

So is he actually filming anything next year or not? I know he likes working and is a bit of a workaholic. Hiddles also comes across as someone who gets frustrated when he’s not working as well

    • 'P'enny says:

“So is he actually filming anything next year or not? ”
      @Ellen

I think Skull Island is defo going ahead next year. I sincerely hope 2015 doesn’t turn out to be a 2013 for him. But, he isn’t shy of promoting so I expect he will leave gaps to give his 3 movies of this year there all in film festivals and interviews.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Four movies! AoU, High-Rise, Crimson Peak, I Saw the Light.

      • philae says:

4 movies out but 3 to promote, Tom isn’t going to do promotional tour for AoU, he will probably attend one première if he can, but that’s going to be it. And no reason why he should, Chris Evans didn’t promote Thor2 just because he had a cameo in it.

      • 'P'enny says:

        @Philae

the difference is Chris Evans isn’t a big part of the Thor franchise, Loki is a major villain of the Avengers franchise.

saying that, I think Tom will probably show for the UK Premiere, but he will not go on the big ensemble interviews. He will let James Spader have his fun in the sun.

to be honest, Tom could do with another year out of the Loki limelight.

      • jammypants says:

I would disagree. I think Loki is a major villain in the first film. The big baddie of The Avengers franchise is Thanos. He is the overarching villain of the MCU.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Philae. nobody said he would pick up the heavy PR duties for AOU but he will likely show at one or two of the premiers and will likely release some statements to an interviewer about his appearance, just as Chris Evans did for TDW.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Ellen, I suspect he is. He just hasn’t confirmed anything himself, that’s all.

      • allegra says:

        He is so quiet lately.
I hope that soon we have good news, maybe a new movie or a show on TV.
In the meantime, I hope he gets plenty of rest and enjoy the holiday season with his family.

      • Gracie says:

        #wantthenightmanagertohappen 🙁

      • jammypants says:

        @Gracie, me too

      • Oh Hey says:

I’m waiting for the first time he tweets since arriving back in blighty, just to see how his feed EXPLODES with replies….

      • Ellen says:

His feed would explode with “I love you Tom” because some fans don’t have anything creative to say :/ people should tweet Hiddles something funny to keep him interested.

      • Oh Hey says:

Well watch it now – Rodney just tweeted a video of the two of them and his dog singing “We wish you a merry Christmas”. Cue the big boom sound…..

      • Oh Hey says:

Gosh, it didn’t even twig that he would have to have a soundtrack album for this movie – Golden Globes, Oscars, and Grammys?

    • Annaliese says:

      Sleep is scheduled for 2015?

  19. A. Key says:

Ah man, that means he’ll be giving tonnes of interviews about how fascinating and deep and meaningful a film about King Kong is, ah ffs…

    • Oh Hey says:

      #2015FeastofTom!

    • Gracie says:

He often talks about his work through his experiences making the film rather than rhetoric. We’re more likely to get the conversations he had with the director and the jokes he shared with the crew members. (Jim Beaver probably gets lots of mention for CP interviews, Iol.) Besides, I think he knows enough to focus on the fun factor for fantasy films. Maybe he will get a question or two where he will be asked if the character is Shakespearean in nature, but that’s to be expected.

    • icerose says:

Silver Tongue Tom can sell anything with the right spin and I am sure he can work the Tempest in their somehow.

  20. ellesbelles says:

    OK cloud is fixed!

Special thanks to Gracie, there is full video with audio of Coriolanus, parts one and two now

Full audio of Othello at the Donmar

Full Video with audio of Muse of fire part 1 (all 45 mins), and a separate file, just audio for listening in the car

  21. et alors says:

Tom, cradling Rodney’s dog, Mono, and Rodney Crowell singing “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” What is going on with Tom’s eyes, though?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLRGLCxc8_s&feature=youtu.be

    • Allegra says:

Wow, that was unexpected! And also so cute!
I thought he would rest a few days and then would spend Christmas with his family in London.
Anyway, he looks happy and rested with that little dog on his lap.
And to answer your question, I honestly do not know. Maybe contact lenses?

    • ellesbelles says:

OH emailed this to me. Ive watched it like ten times. Its so adorable I can’t even!

    • Oh Hey says:

It looks like it was either filmed with a flash or with some red-eye filter on it.

    • et alors says:

I’ve seen that effect in pictures, but I don’t think I’ve seen it in videos before, at least not when it’s that noticeable. His eyes look positively demonic.

On a different tangent, I thought he’d be back home in London getting some rest, but he’s apparently in Nashville right now?

      • Oh Hey says:

We don’t know when that was shot, he might be back home already, Olly posted he was on his way home, maybe Tom was with him?

      • Oh Hey says:

It was fairly dark in that room, it looked, and it looked to me like my photos look with the red eye filter on, weird, even the dog’s eyes are weird.

    • icerose says:

I think Tom looks very very merry which is great. I love how these two just seem to have bonded. Now I need a drink and a lie down

  22. Oh Hey says:

Speaking of tweeting something funny, thanks Rodney http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLRGLCxc8_s&feature=youtu.be

  23. ellesbelles says:

I’m off early tonight ladies, I think I have a date under the covers with Prince Hal.

    See you tomorrow!
