Norman Reedus’s AMA: his favorite WD episode, possible romance with Beth

Norman Reedus did an AMA on Reddit yesterday. He was promoting his work with The Felix Organization, which provides camping and enrichment activities for youth in foster care. It was an excellent AMA in that Reedus engaged with fans, answered a lot of questions and was very accessible and friendly. He didn’t give any incredible quotes (like he’s been known to do in interviews) but he did give a lot of behind the scenes details on The Walking Dead. It was a fun read for me as a WD fanatic. You can see Reedus’ full AMA on Reddit and here are some highlights. He never uses caps, btw, he’s like the anti-Kanye.

Q: When you signed on to play Daryl Dixon, did you think that the character would still be alive four years later?
A: i didn’t to be honest. it was such a well written script i just wanted to be involved in any way possible for however long they would have me around

Q: How well do you think you would do in a real apocalypse situation and do you think about what you’d do in daryls situations?
A: i would run . the way my cat runs when i duct tape things

Q: If the zombie apocalypse was to happen right this second, and the object you see first when you turn to the left is your only weapon. What is it and how f*cked are you?
A: its my cat staring at me licking his paws and i am totally screwed

Q: What is your personal favorite episode of The Walking Dead, and why? 🙂
A: oh man i like a bunch of them . i really think the episode with chad and melissa was super well written and acted and directed and was awesome. [The Grove]

Q: What’s your favorite part of being Daryl Dixon?
A: the people i work with are my favorite part all of them

Q: Was there ever a chance of a romance between you and Beth working out?
A: there was definitely a taste of it in the air

Q: On a scale of 1-10, how much do you miss Emily?
A: 13

Q: What’s the normal routine when somebody gets killed off in The Walking Dead?
A: selfies , hugs, shots . we all kinda love each other . for real

Q: What Breaking Bad character do you think would be good in TWD?
A: skylar would be good . level head thinks on her feet. they all would be good !

Q: What does Norman Reedus want for Christmas?
A: hmmm let me think . movie marathon in bed with a mountain of chocolate in a panda bear onesie

Q: Hi Norman, how would you like to be remembered?
A: m to the i n the g u s

[From Reddit]

Now I’m picturing Reedus in bed in a onesie eating chocolate. Does that panda bear onesie really exist? It’s oddly specific to not be an actual item of clothing he owns. The redditors tried to summon various resident artists to depict this scene, but as of the time I’m writing this the only artist who showed up was substandard_artist, who lives up to their name. It’s still oddly satisfying to see this vision come to life.

As for everything Reedus said about loving his job and his coworkers, that’s what we’ve heard from just about every Walking Dead castmember. It must be a great place to work despite the occupational hazards. Also, I would miss Emily Kinney/Beth more if she wasn’t trying to make a music career happen. I like her much better as an actress.

I really like what Reedus said about how he would like to be remembered by his son, Mingus. Mingus is Reedus’s only child, he’s his 15 year-old son with Helena Christensen. Reedus was with Christensen from 1998 to 2003. The last we heard Reedus, 45, was dating a 21 year-old model. Someone did ask him about that, but he didn’t answer.

Reedus is selling this t-shirt he designed with the proceeds to benefit The Felix Organization.

Ugh I’m glad they wrote Beth off before she hooked up with a daddy figure. But Darryl, just, no. He’s one of so few truly decent people on the show. (I loathe Rick).

    • Tiffany27 says:

I am the complete opposite. I love Rick, Daryl could die tomorrow and I would be fine.

      • FingerBinger says:

I don’t think the show would be the same if Daryl wasn’t there. That said,I like both Rick and Daryl and Michonne. Everybody else is pretty useless.

    • Kori says:

I love Rick, Darryl, Michonne and Carol. Any of them get killed and I will be beyond pissed off.

  2. Esmom says:

I actually kinda like the Panda Norman sketch. Rough as it is, it captures his facial likeness pretty well, imo.

  3. Jess says:

I love him even more now that I know he has a cat, and he mentioned it twice, so cute!

  4. Estella says:

    I want a Carol/Daryl romance!

    • bettyrose says:

IKR. I thought this was inevitable at one point, and then Rick (grrrr) tossed Carol out. They’re good, now, I know, but I was hoping Daryl would find out, there’d be a Daryl/Rick showdown to the death, and then Daryl would recover Carol and they would become the group leaders as a power couple. . . . *off to write fan fiction*

    • Sparkly says:

YES. Those two have had so much chemistry from the start. I think Norman is projecting his own wants onto Daryl/Beth. There wasn’t any touch of that in the air. They were so awkward together.

    • Valois says:

I think there’s zero chemistry between them.

  5. ReturnoftheMac says:

I’ve said it before but he’s SO genuinely nice. He comes to Savannah a lot and is always super approachable and down to earth. Love him!

  6. Liz says:

I was definitely rooting for a Daryl/Beth romance. So sad it won’t happen. Daryl is the hottest – but I so don’t think Carol and he should happen- gross IMO

    • Bucky says:

Daryl and Carol have incredible chemistry and they equal each other in badassery. Beth and Dary had a much more older-younger sibling vibe to me and I’m so glad they didn’t hook up.

Beth was pretty useless most of the show. Carol, on the hand, can single-handedly save the mother-effin day.

      • SteaminSam says:

I’m always thrown with Carol – visually she looks around the same age as Daryl but the gray hair makes her look more like a mother figure, so it’s just weird to think that, aside from the chemistry they obviously have, there could ever be a hookup there…even weirder than him hooking up with the much-younger Beth.

      • Daniela says:

Same could be said about Carol. She was useless the first 3 seasons until they decided to do something with her. The character Beth wasn’t given much to do and when they finally decided to they killed her. I thought there was a lot of potential with Beth but guess it wasn’t meant to be

  7. Yup, Me says:

Boring a** Beth Blanderson. Bye, gurl.

    • MarBear says:

ughhhhh I know. Beth was the worst. She was so useless and I’d shudder whenever she started to sing. So glad she is gone!

  8. Dana says:

For a split second I thought he was Sean Bean xD

  9. Norman Bates' Mother says:

I am so torn with this guy. I used to think he was skeevy and unlikable because the only things I knew about him was that he dates a barely legal girl, loves taxidermy (as Normans do *points at her name*) and roadkill but I am a huge TWD fan and as I was recently researching other cast-members, I learned so many nice things about him that I kind of like him now. He just seems so nice, real and unpretentious, he cares about children and animals (before they become a roadkill or are taxidermied), he never says anything negative about anyone, loves his job and all his cast-mates seem to love him. The girls who played Sophia, Mika and Lizzie simply adore him and that says a lot as children are usually the best judges of ones character. So why does he have such a shallow taste in girlfriends? Douches date barely out-of-their-teens aspiring models.

  10. Ryan says:

Does anyone remember that Beth was a kid? She was, what, 16 or 17? I’m glad Daryl and Beth didn’t hook up because I didn’t want to have to hate Daryl for being pervy. I did sense some sexual tension. I would love a Daryl/Carol romance, but I would love it just as much if Carol stayed a strong, independent, single woman. I think that’s a good role model for girls.

    • Norman Bates' Mother says:

She was 17 when they reached Herschel’s farm. About 2 years have passed since then so she would still be very young at 19, but legal according to the pre-Apocalyptic standards. Norman keeps dating girls this young and it’s gross but it would be much different in a TWD world where only a tiny percent of the population have survived. Now, without Bob and Beth and excluding children, in the group we have 5 single men, including Gabriel (is he a catholic priest?) and 4 single women, including Tara who is a lesbian. Not much of a choice.

  11. anne says:

helena christensen is just gorgeous to me – inside & out. lucky man.

    • Caz says:

Reedus commented years ago that their relationship didn’t cope with Helena’s grief at hutchence’s passing “it was hard to compete with a dead icon” (apologies if I got that not quite right). I liked them together. I’ve never seen Reedus in anything – is he a good actor?

  12. pru says:

I like him despite the ridiculous dating a 21 year old model thing. He seems charming and like a really good guy. Also, he’s good on this show and I love Daryl.
I’m losing my patience with TWD. I think I’m over the whole anyone can die premise. It feels like all the characters I like are getting darker, sadder, depressed or are losing their humanity, all to just die horribly in the end. After 4 1/2 years of that, I’m too invested in the characters to watch this happen anymore. Plus the writing has been sloppy and inconsistent this season.
I think I may just binge watch it online from now on.

  13. Kell says:

Just watched Beth’s “Rockstar”music vid and I had to take a lighter to my ears. That was awful. She could sing acappela on the show but that song was a) poorly written b) what the hell was that country or pop but your talking about a rockstar? Can you find your indentity before you start singing? c) poor choreography and no black and white does not make you more artistic d) she looks hunchy in it and awkward e) stick to acting, that’s where you belong.
