John Travolta explains why he needs to work out with buff gentlemen at 3 am

Of all John Travolta’s wiglets, this one isn’t too bad. It might be one of his better ones, right? These are photos of Travolta at the 12th Annual Living Legends of Aviation Awards over the weekend. He was supposed to present Angelina Jolie with an award, but there are NO photos of Angelina anywhere to be found and I don’t know if she even came out for this. You know why I think Travolta’s hairpiece looks so good here? It’s because Travolta doesn’t have any sketchy facial hair to distract from his ‘piece. Remember his facial hair in the past year? He was doing that gross soul patch for a while, then he was doing a really disturbing goatee. He looks much better clean-shaven, and this wiglet is a keeper.

As I briefly discussed last week in the links, Travolta was spotted at a 24-hour gym at 3 am. He started up a conversation with the only other person in there, a buff young gentleman (of course). Travolta even posed for a photo with the buff gentleman, and shockingly, Travolta works out sans wiglet. While Travolta was on the carpet for the Living Legends of Aviation Awards, he was asked about the incident and he tried to explain. Keep in mind, I had to read these quotes three times before I realized that John was explaining why he works out at 3 am (versus why he doesn’t wear a wiglet while working out).

John Travolta has been working out extremely early – and without his hairpiece – and the reason is his children. The 60-year-old actor explained his 3am workouts as the result of a busy work schedule and the demands of two young and active kids. Speaking at the 12th Annual Living Legends of Aviation Awards on Friday, John (with hairpiece back on) described his busy life to Access Hollywood.

‘I’m a father. They still want me to play with them at a level of a much younger man,’ John explained.

With wife Kelly Preston, John has two children, 14-year-old Ella and four-year-old Benjamin (the couple’s eldest child, Jett, died of a seizure in 2009). As for how these young children affect his gym schedule, John pointed out that ‘in order to stay healthy for them, that’s what I do.’

‘I play tennis every day and I lift weights,’ he added. ‘I just take vitamins and try to keep my health so I can stick around for them.’

‘I should really be their grandfather,’ John joked when he considered his own age.

That age showed when John was at the gym for his middle-of-the-night workout – another gym patron snapped a selfie with the actor, who was not wearing a hairpiece for the exercise.

[From The Daily Mail]

Yes, a 60 year old trying to be a hands-on dad to an active 4 year old has got to be rough. But you know what else is rough? Working out with buff gentlemen at 3 am in empty gyms. Travolta’s sleep cycle must be all kinds of messed up. Let’s say working out at 3 am is a normal thing for him – and he says as much in this interview – and let’s say that he works out for an hour, maybe 90 minutes. Then he has to shower and go home (unless the buff gentleman wants breakfast, I suppose). So Travolta is getting home at like 5 am, give or take an hour. Then what? He sleeps for eight hours? And he plays with his kids in the late afternoon, then it’s back to gym at 3 am. Very weird. I also think it’s odd that Travolta would need to go to an outside gym. Surely he has a home gym? But then the buff gentlemen would have to come to him?

no shame in the game, I hope he can find freedom and happiness sometime soon.

I think this piece is hilarious. Like is it our business that he goes to the gym at 3 AM? People have different schedules. I used to go at 4 AM: not many crowds, I was a morning person, and it was just fun to do it early. Lord just let him work out when he wants with who he wants.

      • Zwella Ingrid says:

I have a girlfriend who is a crazy morning person and works out at 4 am every day, but I’m having a hard time believing that 3 am is a opportune time for someone/anyone to work out. Seems like hanky panky to me! LOL! Does anyone on here legitimately work out at 3 am? You would probably have to get up out of bed at 2:30 to go, right?

      • Esmom says:

Some gyms have become 24/7 for a reason, presumably. And my sister actually does work out at 3:00 am and you are right that she has to get up at 2:30. She does it to get everything done — working full time, spending time with her toddler daughter, running errands — and she goes to bed super early to wake up at that time. I don’t think it’s sustainable to keep a schedule like that and I don’t think she does either. Kids grow up fast and then hopefully schedules can become more reasonable again.

So I can’t shade Travolta for working out at 3:00 am. But it seems weird that he goes to a gym. A guy who has a hangar full of airplanes seems like a likely candidate to have his own home gym.

      • Jag says:

I used to work out around that time, but it was after work – not before. I worked second shift, usually until midnight or 2 am, so was wide awake when getting home for the evening. Some people are natural night owls and working out at 3 am would be like working out at 6 pm to other people. 🙂

    • Dirty Martini says:

Ditto. I’m to the point I’m just sad for him. He cannot be who he is for whatever (more or less self manufactured, I largely blame COS but he chooses COS so……) reason and he must be in a living hell.

Just don’t shove any gay sex in billy crystal’s face John…

    • Caz says:

I agree. No snarky comments from me.

  2. aims says:

Ok, I’ll say it. Bullsh*t!! I’m not buying it and I feel badly for him that at his age he feels he needs to lie about his “routine. ” wink wink.

  3. Angie says:

Ohhh Johnny boy….do what you feel works for you – people are gonna bit$h either way! At 60 – do you really care what is being said anymore? Please let there be a tiny, sweet victory to aging!!!

  4. lucy2 says:

Doesn’t he keep an airplane at his house? I find it hard to believe there’s no room for a treadmill. Or no time to do it besides 3 AM.

    • Pandy says:

Seriously. No one’s buying what he’s selling. Too bad he thinks he needs to keep up the pretense.

    • minx says:

Well, that was my first thought. All these wealthy celebrities, why would they ever want to go to a gym, where they could be photographed or bothered? Travolta could have a state of the art gym at his home, but that wouldn’t include any hot workout buddies.
I wish he would just come out already.

    • Esmom says:

Ha, I said the same thing above, should have scrolled down first. Great minds…lol.

I LOVED this write up!! “… (unless the buff gentleman wants breakfast, I suppose).” LOVE IT!!!
    HA HA!

  6. Sumodo1 says:

Greetings from Ocala, FL where John Travolta lives much of the time. His house here is gigantic and has a Boeing 707 and other planes parked out back. Of course, he has a home gym! But, in Ocala, he is known for going to a couple of local gyms in the middle of the night, then eating pancakes at IHOP in the wee hours. He has told people here that he stays on West Coast time. Travolta shops at Dillard’s and Best Buy, and nobody bothers him. I’ve seen him out and about three times, and he smiles and waves and acts like he’s no big deal. He owns a building in downtown Ocala which serves as the Scientology HQ and reading room, and nobody pickets it or makes a fuss. He takes the 707 out for a spin and it makes a racket. That’s the only complaint about John Travolta: his noisy plane.

    • Aurora says:

Nothing better than IHOP after a good banging working out, right John? Seriously though, I dont doubt that he works out, I question why a person of his resources would place himself alone in a gym at 3am. Theres got to be security risks at a minimum, all it takes is one psycho to figure out where to find him alone at 3 am with few to no witnesses present.

  7. Loopy says:

LOL at the insinuations of this write up. But yes a guy who has planes in his back yard definitely has a home gym,but some people enjoy and are more motivating working out with others.

  8. FingerBinger says:

Why does he feel the need to explain why he works out at 3 am? This is all very strange.

    • DrM says:

I’m not buying his reasons either…he could pay a trainer, heck he could pay fifty trainers to work out with him at his home gym at 3am. There has just been too much talk around this guy for too many years. I think he’s most likely bi and out on the pull. But you know what? WHO CARES. I mean really. As long as his wife is ok with it and he’s ok with it…we should just let him be. A bit hard when he fuels the speculation himself though with his interesting reasoning…

  9. Jem says:

Well I’ve always been a nightowl myself and never did take any issue with the workout hour he chose. My issue is that he’s a gazillionaire and almost certainly has his own private home gym or whatever. I think it’s pretty transparently factual that he’s hanging out at these places to meet dudes, because he is a closeted gay man. The only shame here is that he’s lying about it.

    • Erinn says:

Yeah the time thing isn’t odd to me. My dad would get up at like…3 or so most mornings and go for a run and go to the gym, because he’d be at work for 5 or 530. Mind you, if he could have afforded a home gym, he likely wouldn’t be going to a regular public gym at all hours. But even weeks when his work schedule was different (they rotated and did a different shift ever so many weeks) he’d still go to the gym early because there wasn’t any wait for the machines, and nobody getting in the way. Some people function better in the early hours, and if that’s their most productive time, hey, go ahead.

  10. Greek Chic says:

I dιdn’t know that Travolta was bald lol

    • MariPoodle says:

His face doesn’t match his hands. With that kind of money if I did one I’d do the other.

  11. BendyWindy says:

It’s not a bad hairpiece, sure, but I think he looks better without it. He was looking pretty good in that gym photo.

  12. Angie says:

I have such a soft spot for this guy. I feel bad for him.

  13. scout says:

Hahaha…excuses, excuses. He ate too much Twinkies and Bon Bons.
Well…most 60 yrs olds wake up early in the morning anyway but buff gentlemen surely need to sleep longer, poor guys.

  14. Paloma says:

I read, quite a long time ago, that he sleeps during the day and stays up at night; this was all before any major scandals.

    • Kosmos says:

Okay….we can understand that. But he says above that he works out specifically to be able to play with his children, but if he’s sleeping during the day, how is this possible? I’m sure his children have a normal daytime and night time sleep schedule, so wouldn’t this conflict with his night owl schedule? Personally, if I were a billionaire and enjoyed working out at 3am, it certainly would be in my own fully equipped home gym, or with my trainer.

  15. Dee says:

I love this guy and his family.
    Live and let live.

  16. Cerulean Skygirl says:

I think it’s ridiculous to make a fuss about someone working out at 3AM. I go to a 24 hour a day gym, too. Some people just keep different schedules, whether it’s due to being work, a night owl, insomnia, or just having more energy at whatever time. Also, I think it’s great that he’s trying to keep in shape to keep up with his kids. I have 2 young ones and even though I’m a bit older-ish, I want to stay strong & fit so I can do more with them.

One more note – I have PLENTY of workout equipment at home (not big machines, but enough for a decent workout, and there’s always body weight exercises) – BUT some people (including myself) have an easier time working out outside their home (whether it’s a gym, outdoors, climbing wall, tennis courts) because it gets them motivated and there aren’t distractions such as food & the television set around! John might also prefer night hours because there aren’t as many people gawking at him and trying to snap pics as there would be during the day.

    • Hollz says:

Thank you! I’m the same way – i get a much better work out when I go to the gym then I do when I’m at home, even if there is no one else at the gym!

  17. Jenns says:

I believe he’s talked about his insomnia in the past. My guess is that’s why he is keeping odd hours.

As for the young guy he was taking a selfie with, we can all speculate on why John would approach him…

  18. Cindy says:

I feel sorry for him, he just seems lonely and sad. 🙁

  19. Mia4S says:

I love the number of commenters on this thread who seem to think this is about workout times. Bless. 😉

Just keep it consenting John. Keep it consenting. We don’t need any more “shocking” lawsuits.

  20. Size Does Matter says:

I think it’s awesome that he works out at 3 a.m. in a practically empty gym. That way he’s safe from a chance encounter with Charlize Theron.

  21. delorb says:

Is that what the kids are calling it these days? Bless his heart.

  22. idsmith says:

No one seems to be asking why the other guy was working out at 3am. He looks great without his hairpiece! John seems like a really sweet guy and I wish people would give him a break

  23. Dash says:

I remember watching an interview with him years ago when he talked about his late night lifestyle. I’m pretty sure he said he had assistants to play tennis with him at midnight and a whole lot of other things like that.

  24. Cris says:

I hear when he’s here in Maine at his Isleboro island estate, he can be spotted at the Denny’s in Rockland at 3 am. Guess it is a lifestyle for him (not the young buff dudes however)!!

  25. Jayna says:

John has always slept during the day. He has very odd hours. His kids were homeschooled and had odd hours. He would go out at midnight and take the kids for quick trip in one of his smaller planes in Ocala. Him going to work out at 3 is nothing odd for him, I would imagine.
