Laverne Cox in Johanna Johnson at the SAGs: glam or fug?

Laverne Cox

Laverne Cox led the charge last night along with Uzo Aduba as OITNB dethroned Modern Family for best tv comedy ensemble at the SAGs. Laverne looked like a dream in this Johanna Johnson number. Granted, the dress’s details looked better close up than in the full-length shot. I would have skipped the front skirt slit, but otherwise Laverne’s stayed true to her style. Laverne accessorized with Forevermark diamonds and a Judith Leiber clutch. Her makeup is radiant. The hair extensions are a bit long, but she’s having fun.

Lauren Lapkus looked phenomenal in this smashing Badgley Mischka couture gown. Did you even recognize her? She played the nerdy prison guard character, Susan Fischer. Lauren is a stand-up comedian (you can see her on Key & Peele) and one to watch. This brocade ball gown is tailored perfectly and so beautiful.

Taryn Manning, who plays the terrifying Pennsatucky, wore Elisabetta Franchi. Bless. Taryn’s a talented tv actress, but she never hits the mark at awards shows. This peach-colored dress faded into the background, and her make-up was washed out.

Lea DeLaria represented and threw down Big Boo style. She had a fantastic evening. Lea tweeted and posted cool photos all night.

Emma Myles (who plays Pennsatucky’s ex-follower, Leanne Taylor) thought she was going to 1990s prom. This hot-pink, ill-fitting satin gown was the worst dress of the night for me.

Vicky Jeudy (the seldom-seen Janae) wore what I expected Paula Patton to wear. The bodice looks like it’s covered in tree branches from a Harlequin novel.

Danielle Brooks (Taystee girl!) went glam in royal blue Christian Siriano. This was one of the better OITNB dresses.

Jackie Cruz (Flaca) wore an ornately embellished Christian Siriano gown that probably took hundreds of hours to make. They should have saved their labor.

Jessica Pimentel (Maria Ruiz) went for the velvet Elvis vibe in Marc Bouwer.

LOLZ at tree branches from a harlequin romance cover. the commentary gets kookier as the day goes on. BLESS YOU!

  2. MaiGirl says:

Please tell me that y’all see the cracked-out kitty face on Vicky Jeudy’s bodice, because now I can’t unsee it.

Danielle Brooks has never looked better. So pretty!

  3. bns says:

Not her best, but she’s as confident as ever. I f–ing love her.

  4. Kiddo says:

I like the deep blue gowns and that’s about it.

  5. Joy says:

I feel like Laverne’s makeup artist went a little too light with the highlighter in the eye and brow area. Danielle is the epitome of flawless for me in that navy gown. As a plus sized woman myself, I see her and it gives me hope!

  6. Blythe says:

Surely Laverne could have found something better to highlight her arms and shoulders. The bust to midsection area looks odd. Her eyeshadow is way too dark. A bold dress color would have stood out. I love Danielle, Jessica and Vicky’s look. Jackie Cruz’s dress overpowers her body.

Laverne looks beautiful in head shots but that dress is simply not flattering.

And I just see a Jackson Pollack painting (one of his Jazz series) when I look at Jackie….

  7. embertine says:

I’m not totally sold on Laverne’s dress, but her hair and makeup are beautiful and as I completely love her I’m going to call it a win and to hell with being objective.

  8. *North*Star* says:

    Lauren and Danielle looked fantastic!

  9. Janet says:

Lapkus’a dress is lovely even though that’s not my favorite color.

Taryn Manning — peach doesn’t look good on anybody.

    Vicki Jeudy– girl, bye!

love that marc bouwer gown. It would have looked a little better on someone more glam and well-known because I think it is looking a little cheap on her. the styling is dead on, but on her it just looks off for some reason. a case of the dress and jewelry not matching the person.

  11. Jen says:

Christian Siriano needs to dress EVERYONE for these award shows. Just gorgeous!

  12. FingerBinger says:

Laverne’s dress is ok for going to the prom. Danielle Brooks looks great. I love the dress and the color. That’s how Melissa McCarthy should dress.

  13. Bridget says:

I’m just going to say it. I thought Laverne’s dress looked cheap – the color, the satin, the neckline, it just did not look good.

    • PattyCakes says:

I agree, though it saddens me to hate her dress.

    • lucy2 says:

I thought the same thing. Satin often does, and the detailing seems unstructured. I was disappointed – I love Laverne and she is gorgeous and often does well on the red carpet, but this has a Department Store Prom Clearance look about it.

Danielle looks stunning! I love that dress, and Lauren’s is pretty too. The rest…not so much.

  14. Brittaki says:

Vicky’s dress is a horror show. Maybe a little more time in the awards game and she’ll do better in the future. Danielle and Lauren hit the mark and look absolutely amazing. I think Laverne looks gorgeous and I love her dress other than the slit in front.

  15. Flaca’s dress looks like something someone threw up on…..

Laverne is UGH. I hate her hair (the blonde more than the actual style), and that dress looks really ugly.

Vicky Jeudy is a big fat NO. Just no. I read that she’s a former beauty queen/pageant person, so maybe she thinks she can wear fugly/theatric/cheap looking dresses like that. She looks really happy though, geez.

My favorite character HAS to be Maria Ruiz. Ugh…I wanted to cry when she was telling Yadriel (yeah, you can see how much I watch this show, lol) to talk to their baby…..whoever plays as him needs to find my digits, because he is HAWT. I want to see more of her and Yadriel. Make it happen *Tim Gunn voice*

And did anyone check out Lea DeLauria’s House of David thing? She can actually sing (from what little I heard), but she comes off as money hungry, imo. She’s got a bunch of package stuff that fans can buy. And I get that she wants to capitilize on the higher level of fame/success that OINTB brought her, but seriously? Someone paying her to fly out (and pay for her plane ticket) to go and eat McDonalds with them? Cleaning someone’s nasty ass bathroom in a ‘funny’ outfit? WTF? And people are actually buying this stuff…..

  16. Kaiser says:

I hated Laverne’s hair with a passion. There was another way for her to do big hair or braids (but not both).

  17. Murphy says:

Aw Taystee girl takin tips from Octavia, way to go girl!

  18. Maria says:

Every single dress is tragic with the exceptions of the burgundy and deep blue ones….

Laverne looks a hot mess: too much makeup, too much highlighting, the wig is sloppy and I hate the roots, more satin with an unflattering fit, her MUA highlighted her damn eyebrows for christ’s sake 😑, her skin looks oily which is probably back to the MUA not using the right foundation/setting powder…..

  19. katy says:

    I adore Jackie’s dress!!

Also, Laverne Cox always looks amazing. I love her.

  20. maeliz says:

Vicky s dress is something I can’t imagine someone wanting to be seen in. Danielle, Jessica, and Lauren looked good

  21. ellesbelles says:

Laverne Cox is gorgeous, and her dress was so close, it just needed to be fitted better to her body and it wouldve been a knockout

Lauren Lapkus killed it. Gorgeous dress perfectly tailored

  22. Stubbylove says:

I like we’re being way too overtly nice to Laverne. Her dress is awful, ill-fitting, her makeup is from 2002 and her hair is boring. I’m sure she’s a lovely person, however, everyone is on an even playing field for the fashion critique – doesn’t matter your color, gender, etc.
