Keira Knightley’s name is a mistake because her mom’s a terrible speller

While on the red carpet for the SAG Awards, Keira Knightley might have let it slip that she’s expecting a girl. Maybe. Page Six claims that Keira definitely referenced a “she” while discussing her bump, but I’m not positive. I think Keira would be totally fine with a boy or a girl, but yeah… she probably wants a girl. She’s been talking about the idea of having a girl for months! Anyway, Keira covers the March issue of ELLE UK, in a photoshoot that was done before Keira was showing. In the interview excerpts, Keira chats about how her name is a spelling mistake and how she hates style rules. Some highlights:

On her name: “I was meant to be named ‘Kiera,’ after a Russian ice skater who was on the TV one day. My dad fancied her and nicked her name for me. But it was my mum who went to register my birth, and she accidentally spelled ‘ei’ instead of ‘ie’ because my mum’s crap at spelling. Apparently, when she came back he said: ‘what the f—? You’ve spelt her name wrong!’ What were they going to do, though? Once it’s on the piece of paper, it’s on the piece of paper. And that’s me. A spelling error.”

Her style rules: “Break the rules. I’ve always hated the idea that you should be wearing this or that, because it makes me feel like I’m getting everything wrong. I hated it at school, and I don’t want it as an adult. If you want to wear a f–king flowerpot on your head and that makes you happy, then wear a f–king flowerpot on your head.’

[From People Magazine]

I like Keira’s unconventionally-spelled name. I like the “Kira” spelling too, but maybe that’s just me. My problem – because I’m a crap speller too – is that I always have to stop and think about whether she’s got an “e” in her last name. I’m forever spelling it Knightly when it should be Knightley. As for Keira’s “break the [style] rules” thing… eh. Keira’s always done so well for herself playing inside the style rules. And honestly, when you’ve got a face like Keira, of course you can wear whatever you like and still look gorgeous. The rest of us need some rules so we don’t wander around with flowerpots on our heads.

The older she gets, the more like her. She seems to get more comfortable in her own skin and that is very attractive in a person

  2. HoneyBea says:

    how is this a story..pass!

  3. LB says:

I just watched her in a movie called Begin Again with the always reliable p Mark Ruffalo. I didn’t always used to like her but she was lovely in this movie. Even Adam Levine was decent in it. Surprised I never heard too much about it before watching it.

    • Dingo says:

Me too a week ago. I just kind of hopeful after watching it.

    • Anthea says:

She was great in ‘Last Night’ with Sam Worthington too. It really changed my view of her actually because she was the best thing in it by such a long way and it’s a pretty good film.

This year I’ve seen Laggies, Begin Again, and The Imitation Game. She was fantastic in all 3. She’s most natural for me in the period piece where she’s playing a British girl, but it was nice to see her do more modern stuff too. Oh yeah, I also got around to seeing Anna Karenina. I missed that one a few years ago. My year has been packed with Keira. She’s aging a bit. That overwhelming beauty is diminishing some… but that just makes way for her to shine as an actress and dig into characters more.

Saw it in the theater begrudgingly and LOVED it and loved everyone in it too! I even bought the soundtrack right after because she has such a sweet voice. I didn’t even like Adam Levine and kind of became a fan.

      • TrixC says:

God, I hated that film, I just thought it was so contrived. And her voice was ok, but not something that would get a record producer’s attention.

  4. I-like-french-fries says:

She looks very pretty in the photos, lovely.

  5. Sofia says:

Jeez, was that really their headline story from the interview?! Technically it should really be ‘Ciara’ anyway surely.
I get her point about breaking style rules and I think it’s a pretty British attitude towards fashion in general. But yeah, I’ve not seen ‘Keira’ break many style rules.

    • VoR says:

If she was meant to have the same name as the Russian skater Kira Ivanova then technically it should really be “Kira”, surely.

    • Kimmy says:

Did you not see that horrid Chanel butterfly nightgown she wore to the Globes? She has worn her re-vamped wedding dress on red cArpets….Keira has always done her own thing fashion-wise. That’s one of the things I like most about her.

  6. Betti says:

Love Keira – she has really grown as an actress. Am also glad to see she has move beyond the Natalie Portman comparisons that plagued her early career – she has had the better and more acclaimed career and seems like a nicer person than Miss Pretentious.

  7. msd says:

I like her. She isn’t the world’s greatest actress but she’s improved over the years. People only seem to have nice things to say about her and she comes off well in interviews.

  8. Barrett says:

She is gorgeous. Great bone structure. She was beautiful even before getting her lips done. In bend it like Beckham she had no top lip. Still was so pretty. Who ever did her lips did a great job and did not make her look “off” like Kidman or Meg Ryan. Bravo.

    • VoR says:

She’s never had her lips done.

      • Barrett says:

There are articles that say she has had her lips done and she does not deny it.

      • VoR says:

She acted as a child so it’s quite easy to find old pictures to show that her lips haven’t changed.
But apart from that she absolutely has denied those malicious rumours.
For example in this very old interview:

        http://www.theguardian.com/film/2004/jul/03/features.weekend

“And I haven’t had my lips done, either. I’m sorry. I know I shouldn’t have brought that up. But can I just say that I haven’t? It’s the idea that people believe it! I’ve had friends phoning me up, and I’m like, ‘Fuck off! Of course I haven’t.'” At this point, she looks around the room very briefly, as if it really might contain the swearing police. “Sorry. But I haven’t. It’s the only thing about me that I don’t want bigger.”

    • Jaded says:

Her lips are the same as they always have been. It’s just a professional make-up job that make them look larger.

    • TrixC says:

I don’t think she’s had anything done. She seems quite accepting of her imperfections and actually I think she’s more beautiful because she hasn’t felt the need to conform to generic Hollywood standards and had a boob job, fixed her crooked smile etc.

  9. scout says:

Spelling mistakes are funny, Oprah’s name is a typo too she said, should have been Orpah!

    • Esmom says:

I know someone whose Irish husband wanted to name their baby “Dylan,” she agreed and he was shocked when they got the birth certificate that she had spelled it “Dillon,” having no idea of the other spelling. They stuck with it even though in the US you can make changes to birth certificates.

      • Ponytail says:

You can change it in Britain too, for up to a year after the birth.

      • lrm says:

It’s funny to me, b/c when choosing a name, we always wrote it all out, or typed it in an email…just to see how it ‘looks’ vs. ‘sounds’.
So it’s always funny to find that parents sometimes don’t discuss spelling ahead of time. Keira’s mom may have had post partum brain, too. lol. Always write it down on a piece of paper and take it with you (:

  10. Alexandra says:

    I like her.

However I know at least in the states that you can change the spelling on your birth certificate. My mom did for my sister when she was like four.

    • Esmom says:

Yes, my mom did it for my sister too.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yeah, I was thinking that would have been a fairly simple process, especially since they discovered it right away.

      • Esmom says:

Maybe they decided they liked it as is? I would never have known it was a typo, unlike the Dylan/Dillon example I cited above.

    • spaniard says:

How lucky are you americans, I’m really envious of your bureaucracy. Here in Spain if you want to change your birth certificate name you end up lost in a bureaucratic hell spending an outrageous amount of time (like years) and money and it’s the same for everything, I married in Las Vegas and get all the papers from the USA was fast and super easy. Now my marriage certificate is in Spain waiting for 2 or 3 years to be processed and legalised by spanish administration.

Regarding Keira, she is one of my favourites, gorgeous, smart and I love her acting (pouting included)

  11. Lucy says:

I’ve always liked her name a lot. Very unusual, now we know why haha.

    • lrm says:

Actually, wikipedia and baby name sites list her name as a variation of the Irish ‘ciara’-can also be kiera, keira, kira, etc. And Ciara is a variant of the gaelic name. So, he name is not a technical mispelling or ‘cre8tive spelling’.

  12. Ginger says:

HAH! My hubby’s name is a misspelling too! He’s forever having to correct people and spell out his name. And most people get it wrong constantly anyway. I think Keira is a lovely person and i also dig her misspelled name. She’s definitely cool enough to get away with a flower pot on her head! 🙂

  13. Coconut says:

My name is intentionally “Keira” and its somewhat thrilling to see it in print thanks to Keira K. My parents’ inspiration was a Russian character in a book, Kira, and they went with the English version of the Gaelic name, Ciara, referenced above. The English spelling is “ie” or “ei.”

  14. Thunderthighs says:

Her right arm seems to be floating in that top pic. I just can’t unsee that. Bad photoshop?

  15. BaeOnBoard says:

Ugh, I’m no prude, but is there *anybody* in Hollywood these days who can give an interview without dropping f-bombs or other swear words left and right? I’ve never understood when people cannot articulate a point or make a statement without F or S being every other word, and it sounds doubly worse coming from someone so young!

  16. Josefa says:

I get what she’s saying about style rules, tbh. I like looking at dresses and giving my opinion about them, but it bothers me to see women ripped apart for their style choices. Seriously – it’s just a piece of clothing they’ll likely not wear again anyway.
