Drew Barrymore on why she isn’t acting as much: ‘my phone isn’t ringing off the hook’

large_Cover Image_edited-1
Drew Barrymore covers the February issue of More Magazine. She’s promoting her cosmetics line, Flower Beauty, which is available at Walmart. I find the advertising and colors for the line very garish, like a young girl getting into makeup for the first time. (Example: Drew on the website with blue eyeshadow from lid to brow, red-orange lipstick and minimal mascara.) That’s Drew’s style though, and she’s probably making bank for it. She’s also been able to carve out a separate niche for herself, one that gives her more time for her family while expanding her empire. So many actresses are putting out branded products, and Drew has a wine line too. (Update: she also has a production company, Flower Films, which has about four films in development. From what I can find, Drew is not listed to star in any of those, but they only have preliminary information up on IMDB.)

Drew isn’t a big box office draw anymore, (I think that Adam Sandler kind of dragged her down with him although he’s inexplicably getting more gigs than she is) and she’ll tell you about it. She will also tell you that her childhood sucked. Here’s some of Drew’s interview with More Magazine, with more at the source and in their February issue.

On the idea of women having it all:
“I’ll get in trouble for it, but I’ll say it anyway: Women can’t do it all. Quantum physics actually says you can’t do it all. Like, you can’t do everything at every minute of every day; it’s actually not mathematically, molecularly plausible. [However,] I do think that women can do everything they want to do, especially if they work hard enough at it. I don’t believe anything comes easy. You have to earn everything in life.”

On her work-life balance:
“I love the beauty industry because even on a workday I can wake up with my kids, go to work, come home, bedtime—there’s a normal life there. And it’s exciting when you have to go on a business trip, as opposed to a film where you’re gone for months. I can’t do that right now. As you add more onto your plate, particularly family, things have to fall off, or you won’t be a good parent.”

On why she stepped back from her acting career:
“Because the hours are too crazy [and] my phone isn’t ringing off the hook with great parts.” But she filmed the upcoming drama Miss You Already with Toni Collette because “Toni us one of the greatest actresses.”

On her childhood:
“I was a happy, blithering idiot. I don’t know how to feel differently about it because I don’t know what another life would be like, so it’s hard to pretend or imagine or wish that it was different because it isn’t. Even if I was a bad girl at moments here and there, I was never a bad person.”

On being a good mother:
“I didn’t really have parents, you know? And therefore the kind of parent I will be is a good, present parent. In a way, maybe that was a detriment to my youth, but it’ll be the biggest asset to my adulthood.”

On her relationship with her mother:
“[I] look after her. That is how I feel good about [our relationship].”

[From More Magazine]

Drew has said similar things in the past about women not being able to “do it all” and she’s talked about her lousy childhood too. These are her talking points, and I still find them interesting. She’s trying to say that we can’t “do it all” in the literal sense or something now. I think she got some mild backlash for that quote before so she’s over-explaining with all that “not molecularly plausible” nonsense. I like that Drew is admitting she’s not getting a lot of roles and isn’t framing her career like she’s chosen to run a cosmetics line instead of be a big movie star. It sucks that she’s kind of aged out of the romcom parts (not that it’s fair) while Adam Sandler keeps getting chances, though. I like her and will watch her on the big screen as long as her movies are decent.

Here are some more photos that More sent us from their feature with Drew. I really like Drew with darker hair. She was ombre blonde for a while and I think the dark color suits her better. She’s well styled here too, much better than she is in her Flower Beauty ads.

I thought she had a successful production company? Get some good material for yourself, Drew, like Reese did with Wild. I’d love to see Drew in an Oscar run in a few years. I’ve always liked her.

    • Celebitchy says:

She does and I meant to mention it. I’ll add it thanks!

      • Someonestolemyname says:

She needs to find a Homeland, etc..or a HBO up and coming series that puts her in a completely new genre and new character that breaks her mold and hope it’s a success and work her way back to being in demand.

      • Bridget says:

She’s been producing most of the movies she’s been in for a long time (aside from the Sandler stuff). I’m kind of surprised she hasn’t tried her hand at directing again, I thought Whip It was fun. Perhaps when the kids are older.

  2. Catelina says:

I don’t think she’s a great actress per say, but she has an appealing onscreen presence. Its sad that she isn’t getting the kinds of parts she wants. I agree the dark hair looks great

  3. Joy says:

Maybe she will have a resurgence like ol Matthew did. I like that she says the worst of her childhood will make her a better parent.

  4. EC says:

She is looking gorgeous here. One of my earliest movie memories is The Wedding Singer, which I absolutely loved (still do). She is lucky that she has the luxury to only choose the work that she likes, and can work as frequently/infrequently in films as she sees fit. I think she had success on TV when she did that mini-series a few years back (Grey Gables maybe?). I would love to see her starring in a great cable show. Not that she seems like she is entertaining that idea, but I would watch!

    • Michelle says:

I loved her in Grey Gardens! She definitely has a charm to her. I recently read a book about the Barrymore family and I’d love to see a miniseries on them. I think Drew would be great in it – specifically playing her ancestress Georgie Drew. At the very least, she looks just like her.

  5. Alexandra says:

I never found her attractive but she looks great here in these pics.

I love that celebs can just do whatever they want without being qualified to do so. Whereas for me, ill ever get out of human resources because I don’t have the education or experience to do something else. Unfair rich privilege.

    • Esmom says:

Yes, it really is hard to switch careers without investing a ton in a graduate degree and even that is not a guarantee. I just made a major career switch but to do so I had to take an unbelievable pay cut, barely a living wage, and start at the very bottom. I’m well aware that I am lucky because we also have my husband’s income to enable me to do this.

    • lucy2 says:

Seriously, it’s amazing what name recognition can do. Look at Jessica Simpson and Jessica Alba – neither one has a business degree or any higher education, and both now have companies raking in millions, that they were able to launch just by being famous. Good for them, but it’s so much easier for them than the regular folks.
My favorite is still the headlines of Brad Pitt “designing” a hotel (I don’t think it happened but still). Do you know how many years of schooling, internship, and experience most architects need to have to be involved in that kind of project?
Kevin Costner does have some oil spill cleanup thing he worked on though that apparently is quite good and was sold for a lot of money. I don’t know how involved he actually was or if it was just an investment.

  6. lucy2 says:

I’ve never thought of her as an astounding actress, but she definitely has charisma on screen, and I’ve always liked her and most of her films.
I think she really wants a calm, stable childhood for her kids, and if that means she doesn’t act much, she sounds find with it. I think her company is still producing, and I could see her coming back to acting more when her kids are older. I hope she directs again someday too.

  7. lunchcoma says:

I think part of her problem is that she’s neither a bombshell nor revered as a great actress, and that parts for women who don’t fit either description tend to be harder to find past a certain age. I do also think that she’s done too many dumb comedies for her own good. Jennifer Aniston and Cameron DIaz are probably getting a lot of the slightly-less-dumb comedy roles that Drew would like.

I think it might do her some good to find her own little indie drama and do some work that convinces everyone to think about her in a slightly different way.

    • Maria says:

you are right, all things considered she did very well for a child star. lots of actors and actresses fade away over time. i think most of her success has to do with the fact that people have an affection for her because of seeing her as a child. see Emma Watson, who still gets roled based on being a cute kid but never having shown acting talent.

i also think that her childhood plays a big part in wanting to at least experience it as a mother.

    • glynda says:

There’s something slightly less dumb than horrible bosses 2? Aniston is 7 yrs older than barrymore…and she herself says she can’t get arrested….just doesn’t get roles she wants either. Thank goodness. I don’t think her cakewhoring will help either.

    • perplexed says:

I don’t think she can play a more mature adult who is a lawyer or doctor type, which I think you can start to play in your 30s and 40s. Not sure if that’s because of the lisp which makes her seem kind of child-like, but she probably wouldn’t be convincing playing the role that Claire Danes does on Homeland.

As ditzy as Cameron Diaz has been in some roles, I can find her convincing when she plays a fully realized adult with a career.

However, she did say she’s not getting the great parts, not that she’s not getting any roles at all, and, to be honest, I can’t remember how often she’s played a great part. Getting a great part in Hollywood when you’re not Jennifer Lawrence seems like a high bar to set ( not that she doesn’t have a right to set that bar, but she might be unemployed as an actress by choice right now).

  8. bns says:

    I love her.

  9. Maria says:

men cant have it all, so why would women have it all?

  10. manta says:

In these days where we deplore the lack of female directors, I wish she would give another go at it.

I really enjoyed Whip It and thought she did good for a first film.

  11. Rhiley says:

I love Drew as a person. I think she has managed to make a wonderfully balanced life for herself. That said, I have never thought she was a particularly good actress, but I wonder if perhaps she would be a good director. I could see her doing more behind the camera. I know she director a few smaller movies- the one with Ellen Page, right. I don’t know, whatever makes her happy.

    • Yeah, I think she should go out into directing and producing more–but maybe she wants to spend time with her family…..it seems like she hasn’t had stability like that for a looong time, and producing/directing takes a long time, a lot longer than acting. But it would be cool for her to get into it more.

  12. mia girl says:

In fairness to Adam Sandler (did I just type those words?), Barrymore actually was the female lead in his latest rom-com/stupid movie. So at least he continues to give her chances in those types of roles.

Otherwise, she has aged into the “void” where parts for women are scarce or not very exciting. I agree with the commenter above that she should find some good material for herself and produce her own stuff.

  13. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Love her hair that color. I like her.

    • Esmom says:

Yes that color is so rich and flattering. I like her, too, she always seems so genuine and sweet.

    • littlestar says:

Me three, have always liked her. She seems like a genuinely nice person and someone I’d want to be friends with (not that I’d ever get the chance to be friends with someone like her LOL).

  14. Loopy says:

I love it when she acts with Adam Sandler.

  15. StormsMama says:

    I love her.
    Love her.

    • Zwella Ingrid says:

I love her too. I hope everything stays calm and happy for her. I really want her to have a happy life. A fairy tale life. That is what I want for her. Not sure why I love her, but I do.

  16. obsidian says:

I admire her for having turned her life around from her wild child days. Her honesty is a refreshing change from the Aniston BS we have been bombarded with the last few weeks.

  17. Kimmy says:

If Cameron Diaz and Jen Anniston can get parts, so can Drew. I just don’t think she’s into acting right now. Maybe when her kiddos get older.

I’d love to see her direct more. whip It was pretty great. Can’t you see her doing smart, indie comedies?

    • Miss T says:

Incidentally, Drew recently filmed a movie “Miss You Already” which Aniston was originally supposed to star in.

I agree that she probably could work more, but doesn’t get many offers that she feels are worth leaving her kids for.

  18. Maria says:

if i grew up like her i’d love to be a stay at home mom.

  19. paranormalgirl says:

She elevates Adam Sandler movies. I mean, they’re never going to be GOOD films, but she makes them more appealing.

    • StormsMama says:

I agree. I thought Blended had a level of…believability bc she was believable and relatable. Ugh I know I just said Blended had a level beyond…the surface. Sorry. I really am a fan of Drew obviously.

  20. Merritt says:

I’ve tried a few things from her makeup line, Flower Beauty, when I’ve been dragged to a Walmart. It is actually a decent makeup line. I just wish it wasn’t exclusive to Walmart, since I really detest going there.

    • Esmom says:

Yeah, that’s really disappointing she chose to partner with them. And for that reason I guess I won’t ever be trying her stuff. Boo.

    • alison8701 says:

I’ve tried a few of her things as well. It’s a bit hit and miss, but I like her liquid liner pen, very easy to use.

  21. scout says:

She looks beautiful. Enjoy motherhood right now, there will be plenty of time to do other things later. That’s my advice.Kids grow up too fast, can’t get that time back ever.

  22. bettyrose says:

She looks stunning with that hair and no one can do it all. But a good support system makes a huge difference in how much of a work/family balance anyone can achieve regardless of gender.

  23. Charlotte_ says:

I think the difference between aniston , diaz and drew is that drew has a family. And maybe she doesnt want do any garbage movie for a good paycheck. Her kids are more worth then this. She has enough money and dont feel the need to be constantly present in HW. Jen is always there in the magazines, diaz is very sexy. And drew is nothing of that.

  24. Ms. Liz says:

I think it might also have to do with the fact that her appeal seems to have changed. Years back Drew was intriguing & had her own bad girl flavor, but now she’s turned into mother earth and quite frankly that comes off as boring. Nobody wants to pay for boring, especially a new generation that can’t remember the old Drew.

  25. caitlin says:

Like someone said above, Drew has charisma and IMO, an appealing onscreen presence. I like that she doesn’t try to conform to the ideal Hollywood standard — i.e. starving to achieve the PERFECT body, plastic surgery, etc.

Unfortunately, this has probably contributed to her phone not ringing off the hook, but it’s interesting that Sandler who has gained a ton of weight and IMO looks like a slob, seems to have no problem getting work. Double standard?? Yeah, I think so
