Uma Thurman’s makeup artist claims Uma’s look was just ‘no mascara’

wenn22167257

On Monday night, Uma Thurman stepped out on a red carpet in NYC and by Tuesday morning, the internet was ablaze with stories about how Uma had overdone the Botox and fillers – we discussed it yesterday as well, go here to read. Several people pointed out that Uma’s makeup – or lack thereof – was significantly contributing to Uma’s seemingly “new face.” I think it was a combination of no eye makeup plus Botox and fillers. She genuinely looked “frozen” and her cheeks looked utterly unmoving. Well, Uma’s makeup artist was dispatched to People Magazine to give an explanation for Uma’s new look. Troy Surratt says it’s just makeup, obviously.

“Frankly, I’m quite surprised by the conversation,” Tony Surratt tells PEOPLE. “By now I would have thought that we were all open to and knowledgeable of the role that makeup plays in the world of fashion and particularly celebrity, as a medium for creative self expression. I think that women should feel open and free to experiment with different beauty looks — it’s only makeup, at the end of the day it all washes off.”

Surratt calls the look he created on Uma, “effortless Parisienne chic,” focusing on her lips and complexion. (Note: No mascara was used at all!)

“I wanted to give Uma a statement lip balanced by a more feathered brow,” he shares. “Uma and I discussed creating a look that was more editorial with soft natural lashes. As a makeup artist I’ve grown a bit tired of all of the lash-y looks and fake eyelashes that we’ve been seeing on the red carpet for some time now.” By going for bold lips, statement brows and barely-there eye makeup, “the face is sectioned into three equal parts lending a visual balance and allowing the mouth to be the star of the face,” Surratt adds.

[From People]

There’s more at People Magazine about what makeup he used, but it just read as an advertisement for certain products, so blah. Looking through these photos again, armed with the “it’s just makeup” excuse… I can see why the no-eyemakeup look is throwing off how we see her face, but I’m also pretty sure that Uma recently underwent a major Botox and filler session. It can be BOTH, you know. It can be “different makeup” AND “injectibles.”

Bullsh*t it’s only make up. They think we’re stupid.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

Twitter is saying now,She looks like Benedict Cumberbatch Lol.

I think she did a full face of Botox and fillers and her face went wonky.
Hope she never goes near the Botox or fillers AGAIN.

Uma please stop. You were so stunning before this.

    • qwerty says:

It is just make up. Very, very bad make up. In addition to no lashes she also had really light eye shadow, a combination that always makes you look like an alien (try it). In th last pic, all the lines are in the same place… I see no difference. She’ll make another appearance soon probably and she’ll look normal I’m sure.

    • NYer says:

Well, girl *does* need some mascara…

    • Meghan says:

I know that I think I look completely different when I don’t have eyeliner and mascara on. To me, my face would look like Uma’s, just kind of plain (Minus the red lip, I cannot work a red lip for the life of me).

But I do think it is a combo of Botox and no mascara/eyeliner.

  2. ToodySezHey says:

Chile please. Lack of mascara doesn’t have you looking like a tired lion.

  3. GingerCrunch says:

Why in hell’s name would you do that on the red carpet? That’s my makeup philosophy for going to the grocery store, and I’m older than her. My poor husband shed a tear when he saw these pics yesterday.

Oh. I get it. It was a decoy for the fillers. Duh.

    • BooBooLaRue says:

Verra funny. Me too. Store = no make up except I live in the land of heavy foundation and mascara and bangs. Odd girl (old) out here.

    • Jag says:

Exactly! Just like the women who get short haircuts to make us not notice their new cleavage, Uma had her makeup artist do this so that we wouldn’t notice the bad reaction to the fillers and/or Botox. The way her eyelids are swollen, I think it’s a reaction and will calm down. Hope so, because even though I don’t like her, she’s stunning.

  4. Mop top says:

    Uh huh…they think we’re idiots, I guess.

    • joan says:

The photo comparison that NEEDS to be shown is her before without makup, compared to this. Because she’s striking when she’s dolled up but I think without makeup she looks a lot closer to this current look.

The hair added a lot of awfulness here too, compared to the sexy hair she used to have.

  5. Bridget says:

Why even deny that it’s fillers? She barely even looks like the same person now. No one ever says “oh wow, I didnt recognize you without your mascara!”

  6. Santolina says:

It looks like she may have gained some weight, compared to the earlier picture.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

I have an actress friend who did extra work on a film with her and she said UMA without her makeup, was almost unrecognisable.

Not sure if the current NO makeup story is true though, it looks like she definately had fillers.

      • FLORC says:

Ive seen some early photos of Uma with a clean face and the difference is drastic. Lots of ccelebs look unattractive or average without makeup. However, there’s fillers here. She lost the mmascara, eyeliner, and fake lashes, but.. something puffed up her face and it hasn’t settled.

And this is common. Celebs go in for some pre award touch ups and settling time varies.

I’m with others. They think we’re fools blaming mascara.

      • Bridget says:

If that’s the case I want this makeup that can make me look like Uma Thurman!

    • homegrrrl says:

I guess it’s just me alone here because I prefer the moody no eye makeup look. Uma looks thoughtful here, whereas I would look deranged. I suppose the trend isn’t for every face.

  7. Beckysuz says:

Well if I don’t wear mascara I look like a corpse. So I can’t understand why Uma would forgo ALL mascara. The brows aren’t helping this look either. All together not good. God I wish these woman would accept aging with some grace and dignity

  8. Allie says:

Why do people think that A) we wouldn’t notice or B) that they look better this way? Newsflash: we all get older, it’s not like we’re pointing and laughing at sums because she’s not 20 anymore. Good grief, I think women who age naturally look wayyy better than putting crazy filters in your face.

  9. AntiSocialButterfly says:

Uh, yeah, sure. That and filler face (my guess is fat injections into her cheekbone area, but could be implants, a la Brandi Glanville).

Look at this 3/4ish view of her natural cheekbones for comparison:
    http://www.contactmusic.com/pics/le/cff_midnight_in_paris_premiere_8_120511/uma-thurman_3335287.jpg

Edit: fire your makeup artist, Uma, as s/he shows zero artistry with contouring makeup.

  10. Ginger says:

Not buying it at all. You can clearly see the difference in her face in the side by side photos. But I’m going on my gut reaction yesterday when I first saw these photos and literally did not recognize her except when I read her name under the photo. Why oh why do advertisers and magazines continue to believe that we, their audience are stupid and gullible? Personally, I don’t understand the whole reason why she’s done the Botox and fillers in the first place when she looks great in the before pictures. I hope when it all wears off she lets her face just be. She’s a beautiful lady.

  11. Cel says:

She’s a beautiful woman and the make up artist clearly hates her. If she didn’t have Botox, etc., he certainly made her look like she did.

  12. ncboudicca says:

Is it possible that the bangs she was sporting recently were hiding mini-facelift scars?

    • Miss Melissa says:

I think so. I think she had a mini facelift and some work on her eyes… so she couldn’t wear the eyelashes, glue, etc.

She is stunning as she is.

It seriously sucks that women over 40 are so marginalized that they feel they have to do things like that to themselves.

I think she looks OLDER post whatever she did.

      • lucy2 says:

Almost everyone who gets work done, especially around the eyes, looks older to me. I’ve never understood why so many do it.

      • Pinky says:

I couldn’t agree with you more, lucy2. If you’re going to get face work…whatever. Just DON’T TOUCH THE EYES! Unfortunately, that seems to be the go-to place of both men and women. It turns you into someone else. Someone lopsided.

  13. ickythump says:

This is not just make up – stop insulting us – her eyes are a totally different shape and her cheeks look like they are made of clay. Why oh why do women do this to themselves? Take a leaf out of Helen Mirren’s and Judi Dench’s book – they are ageing gracefully and are glorious.

  14. Loopy says:

I can believe as someone who used to wear heavy eyeliner and mascara, the rare days I would give it a miss ,people would be startled at how different i looked. Imagine Kate Middleton without it you would all say she had work done.

    • FLORC says:

      She did (cough)

There is a new “movement” of the bare face natural look. Makeup that is lighter in shade and texture so you look flawless, but like you’re not wearing makeup. To look like you’re wearing nothing costs A Lot!

Not sure what Uma is doing here. Halloween is months away.

  15. tealily says:

Eh, her makeup is very different, but I don’t actually see a difference when I look at the contours of her face. And she still has visible lines around her eyes and on her forehead. I appreciate that she went for something really different; I don’t think it worked. I also don’t think it is fillers… at least not different filler than she has been using for a while.

  16. obsidian says:

Um, I do believe it’s because she wasn’t wearing fake eye lashes and thick eye liners. You can see the wrinkles around her eyes and forehead. This is totally not like Renee’s case.

    • snowflake says:

okay, so she didn’t do botox but it could still be filler

      • FLORC says:

There’s that new filler those “botched” doctors are pushing. It’s a tiny amount and it gives a natural lift. Lasts like 6 months? She might have had that. It’s the trend.

I swear. They would admit to Uma bathing in the blood of some poor sacrifice before they will admit to her having work done.

      • homegrrrl says:

It appears she’s just had her eyes lifted or sewn or whatever is the botch of the century. Newsflash. Eye jobs always look terrible and add perma allergic reaction to old! Personally, I’ll just get old!!

      • FLORC says:

My aunt always said to age naturally. Your body knows what it’s doing and to alter its grand design will stick out like a sore thumb.

I think Uma looked better as she was.

  17. MinnFinn says:

It was an interesting experiment, I guess. I suppose the goal was negative press attention i.e. a variation on the hideously ugly Oscar gown. But their plan backfired. The unintended consequence is ongoing speculation about Uma having overdone cosmetic procedures.

If the true goal was making the lips ‘the star of the face’, well that failed too. That imo would be an impossible feat. It’s akin to trying to make the reflecting pool the star of the Taj Mahal monument. No amount of dressing up the pool will ever be able to deflect focus from the building.

  18. Pandy says:

That make up artist should be slapped, then fired. She looked awful. Corpse make up.

  19. Jan Harf says:

Well, she needs to FIRE her makeup artist. I only wear mascara, liner and lipgloss, but I’m not a millionaire actress with a freaking personal makeup artist!

  20. aenflex says:

This attachment to non-aging is ludicrous. It truly shows how pathetic we can be as a species. What’s even more sad is that it’s afflicting women predominantly.

  21. smcollins says:

Uh-huh. Yep. Whatever you say. It was all the result of make-up, or rather the lack there of. Now if you excuse me, I have to go climb back onto the turnip truck that I apparently just fell off of.

  22. Xtina says:

I’m confused by her top lip.. It seems sorta flat or stiff and lost a lot of fullness. It reminds me of Britney Spears new top lip area which is so freakin weird to me. What the heck did they do?? It’s like, stiff and bowed… Yes, I know lips lose fullness with age, but it’s the creepy stiff shape they both have that’s so confusing.

I wish they’d be honest about their procedures if only for us to make sense of it all haha there’s probably some crazy procedures they do on the regular that only exist to us in sci fi novels hahah

  23. scout says:

Her whole face looks pulled up! What’s the excuse for that?

  24. Arock says:

Mini eye lift and fillers. She probably already had Botox, which sparingly can make a world of difference with out freezing you, just in certain places. I’m bummed she went so dramatic, on purpose or not.

  25. Mew says:

    Bad bad bad makeup.

  26. taxi says:

Like most people, she has 1 eyes smaller than the other. It shows less when she’s in full makeup, but it’s a fact. She has small eyes & needs mascara & liner. The lank hair is unflattering. Her jaw line looks fuller – do fillers do that? Lips are structurally the same, I think, just lined to accent cupid peaks. Look closely at most enlarged pics of models & celebs – liplines are usually wildly overdrawn. Effective for photo glam shots but it’s really obvious & garish in the flesh.

  27. Aww says:

Well, it is possible – I look very different without any mascara on, almost completely different. But she just had that puffy/shiny Botoxed look…

  28. TWINK says:

Why would ANYONE want to look like they have no lashes?

  29. I Choose Me says:

Yeah, sing me another song dude. Sure, the lack of eye makeup was contributing to how different she looks but I point again to those pics of her laughing. Her face is waxy and unmoving.

  30. moo says:

whatever’s going on (eye job or botox) it gave her a wonky eye. 🙁

  31. platypus says:

I still think it’s just different makeup and weight gain, because her neck and jawline looks fuller too. It’s not like someone would inject fillers in their neck, right? She’s always been a pretty skinny woman with harsh features, so it’s natural that her face would look different with a bit more weight on her. I don’t think she’s had botox either (maybe just a bit between the brows if anything), you can still see the lines on her face, they’re just diffused because of the type of foundation she’s wearing.

    • Miss Melissa says:

But that area will swell after a facelift. There is some kind of discoloration all around her hairline that they tried to cover with makeup. Like bruising after the mini lift?

      • platypus says:

I see what you mean. I figured the darker area around her hairline was just a bad attempt at contouring, since the rest of her makeup is absolute sh*t too. I could be wrong tho, guess we’ll see when more photos come out.

  32. Mrs. Wellen Melon says:

    Cheek implants?

  33. Tania says:

I think she gained weight. That would account for all the puffiness. And the make up is bad. The artist should not have let her go out like that. Most times, you do a very thin line of black eyeliner with mascara and no shadow to balance a nice red lip. That would have looked very nice on her. Instead, she looks like Joni Mitchell.

  34. Susie 1 of 3 says:

She looks like a cross between Madonna and John Hamm’s girlfriend, not that there’s anything wrong with that, but where is her beautifully unique face? I hope everything settles back for her.

  35. bns says:

Lol embarrassing. They should’ve just kept quiet. She has been photographed without makeup on before, but she still looked like herself. She has erased everything that was unique and beautiful about her face.

  36. Aurore says:

“effortless Parisienne chic” Dude, don’t bring us into this mess. No way any woman in this city would go out looking like this.

    – A Parisian

  37. Ash T. says:

Botox…Fillers!!?? That looks more like a facelift. That pulled look is a dead giveaway. I know, I had one 6 years ago.

    • Crumpet says:

That is my guess too. 🙂 I think she would have looked a LOT more like herself if she had worn eye makeup and done something nice with her hair. This whole naked look under these circumstances, is baffling.

  38. Amy says:

…I still see wrinkles around her mouth and eyes so I’m not sure what I’m supposed to be looking for.

She’s a completely different color from the two comparison pictures which is definitely helping her look older.

Yeah…she looks exactly the same. Well sucks for her either way since this will be talked about for weeks.

  39. enike says:

OK, even if it was just a make-up, why would Uma agree with this insanity? Her make-up artist is an idiot….. Uma looks 65 (well preserved 65)

So, my logical conclusion: it is not only the make-up, because no women ever (on red carpet, no less) would go without mascara, if they would have at least one look at the mirror:) 🙂

I mean, who would do this to themselves? Maybe we should send Uma some money, so she can buy a mirror….. or hire other make-up artist instead of this lunatic

I always liked Uma, she is beautiful, but this new look is scary

  40. Katskills says:

I can’t believe I’m saying this because I love Uma Thurman, but… but… she looks like Vladimir Putin in these pictures.!

  41. A.Key says:

“it’s only makeup, at the end of the day it all washes off”

Ahahahahah, that’s very true, but then with that attitude, why put it on in the first place?
Also, if it’s just makeup, then she’s one damned ugly Hollywood beauty queen. And if it’s not, then she’s a sad old botoxed loon. Either way it’s bad.
If I’m being honest, the woman was never remotely beautiful or attractive to me, so I’d say it’s definitely not make up.

  42. Crumpet says:

She got work done and it hasn’t settled yet. You can see signs of a lower facelift, and they usually get fillers at the same time. Witness Courtney Cox – she looked exactly like the Madam puppet before her face settled, and she looks like herself again.

    • Ash T. says:

Crumpet, WORD! For the first year you look “pulled” and then it settles. After that, you look 10 years younger than your age…as you get older. However, a good example of fillers can be found on pics of Courtney Cox several yrs ago. Look around her upper mouth, she looks like a chipmunk?

When you hit your late forties and early fifties everything totally sags. I laugh at these celebs that say they haven’t had anything “done”. It’s a good plastic surgeon.

P.S. Facelift hurts like hell! I won’t go through that again. Still do Botox.

    • Jordan says:

I was just going to post the same thing. It’s not fillers. She had surgery. My mom had her eyelids done and a brow lift and looked the same way for a few weeks. And couldn’t wear eye make up for a few weeks which explains the no mascara look.

  43. Twinkle says:

I think she went more aggressive than injectables. I think she got a face life. If you compare the before and after photos the cheeks and jaw line look higher and more taut.

  44. Dirty Martini says:

I once knew a 60 Something gentleman who decided to have some plastic surgery work done around his eyes. (He was a stage actor in the metro area I live.) shortly after, for his first showing up in public, he actually died his hair a dramatic red. ….his rationale was that everyone would be like “whoa! Big hair change! You look different”….never suspecting the surgery.

  45. Iheartgossip says:

Sure. Simply, sure. Then why does she look like Tilda Swinson?

  46. ellalter says:

How stupid do these people think the non-star human is? She got tightened and filled, and the same thing happened that always happens, their eyes look like slits. So the next time she’s out, she’ll have mascara on, and her handlers will say, “See!” B.S.

  47. SnarkGirl says:

Yeah don’t you just hate it when you don’t wear mascara? I mean you look totally different, and your face stops moving too! You can’t even smile properly and your face looks hard and frozen. Amazing what a little tube of mascara does!

  48. melain says:

Good grief. It’s obviously not just the no-makeup makeup erasing all the years. Obviously! Come on. We’re women and we use makeup! We know its limitations.

  49. EM says:

She has the same mouth shape as Kim Kardashian [& Priscilla Presley] now. Same procedure? Face lift [half?]

  50. bette says:

You can pull off that Parisian makeup look with bold lip and no eye makeup when you’re 20, not in your late 40s. I’m a little older than Uma, and find that mascara and blush are a lot more important now.

Also, that severe shiny lip color does make her look like a well-pickled 60 year old.

  51. Jag says:

She needs to fire that makeup artist then, because that’s all kinds of wrong! (And no, it’s not just lack of mascara going on with her. We’re not stupid.)

  52. jammypants says:

If anyone’s seen her Today show appearance, she looks totally normal. It really is just terrible makeup. Her face is animated and not stiff at all.
