Rita Ora: My new music will be ‘deeper’ than the songs Calvin Harris wrote

Rita Ora

Rita Ora covers the March issue of Nylon to promote her role in 50 Shades as Christian Grey’s sister. Never let it be said that Rita doesn’t push her projects. She’s been talking about this role for over a year. Those who have seen 50 Shades are poking Rita on Twitter because she’s barely in the movie. People say she’s got anywhere between 3 and 90 seconds of screentime. That’s tough. Rita IS full of herself, so it’s funny that she may have ended up on the cutting room floor. Is her role very large in the books? I don’t know.

I’m ignoring the 50 Shades bits in this interview because ugh. Rita talks about other stuff like fashion and her new music. She never mentions Calvin Harris’ name, but the claws are out. After their bad romance ended, Calvin tossed epic shade at Rita and yanked his songs from her album. It’s going to be fine. Rita can throw shade too!

She’s matured as an artist: “It was a process to be like, ‘F*** it! I’m just gonna be me.’ With the first album, I was so hyped up to be signed with Jay Z. I was like, ‘Whatever! Jay f***in’ Z!’ Two, three years later, I was like, ‘You know what? People are actually interested in what I’m saying and how I’m dressing and how I’m acting.’ It’s like, ‘Yeah, I grew up and I looked at my a**, and it got a bit bigger and I’m sexier now.’ Might as well flaunt it! I feel more womanly.”

Her changing vision: “I had a breakup, or whatever, and it really made me realize what I was trying to do. I had been fixated on this love fantasy, but really it wasn’t like that, and I had to take myself back. For me, this was my moment where I had to be real and tell the truth and be honest. I love my pop songs, and I’m still gonna be pop, but this has just got a lot more depth to it.”

Rita is “punk”: The fashion world “needs confidence. It needs a massive boost. It needs a kind of, like, ‘F*** you.’ It needs another Madonna … which it’s not gonna get. But it needs a person who takes chances. You have amazing girls like Emma Watson–glamorous, gorgeous, clean, beautiful girls. But where’s that punk energy? That fun, crazy, respected but still like, ‘S–t, she’s just doing her thing’ person? That’s who I am!”

[From E! Online]

Rita is a “punk” fashionista now? I don’t understand what she’s saying about maturing as an artist. Her tush got bigger, so she’s more of a woman and therefore more mature? Maybe something got lost in journalistic translation. Rita recently twerked in a bikini for Instagram, which wasn’t very mature.

Anyway. I’m sure Calvin will catch wind of Rita dissing his shallow songs. I wonder who’s writing her new tunes because it isn’t her.

No talent, no voice, no dancing skills, no charisma… Go away.

    • Lisa says:

No talent, no voice? She actually is talented. Have you ever heard her sing?

      • Marrria says:

I’d say the problem with the new pop “divas” like Rita, is that they don’t sound unique.
A lot of young youtubers can sing just like her or Perry. I guess no charisma refers to her personality and voice.
Does she have a good voice? Yep. Is it interchangeable? Yep.

    • Christo says:

Yes, while I find her starf**ker history to be deplorable, I will say that she has immense vocal talent. It is a pity that the album wasn’t released as planned because the initial Calvin Harris-produced single was quite catchy.

    • Naddie says:

I did, and just like Marrria said, she sounds like everyone else. No personality at all.

  2. Mzizkrizten says:

    That 7/11 song is awful.

  3. Greek Chic says:

With all this budget Rihanna look she’s sporting I thought she would be completely untalented. I listened to one of her songs (the song was crap) and her voice wasn’t that bad. Not amazing but not terrible. Her style though is so trashy. Her hair color doesn’t suit her at all… Platinum blonde (which I usually hate unless is natural) looks so bad with her skin tone. She is so full of herself and she is not even a real star. Relax girl.

  4. Palar says:

This is one woman who drives me up the wall….arhhhhh! I don’t know if her personality or her music irritates me more!

  5. Ariadne says:

I actually think she’s a competent singer who has the potential to look good and give a charismatic performance but she really does prove that these things mean very little if you’re too full of yourself to develop your strengths.

I’ve heard so much c**p about her and very little of her music, which is a shame.

So many ‘celebrities’ should pay attention to Kate Moss’s habit of never speaking or Kylie Minogue’s habit of crediting everyone around her with her success. Both of them have had amazing, long term careers which overshadow any vicious gossip (regardless of whether they are especially talented). Rita is the opposite.

    • MooHoo says:

totally agree. looks so much classier when people just keep their inner bloody monologue to themselves.

    • Honeybea says:

I agree. A humble and not so in your face attitude has definitely allowed a lot of careers to go the distance. However, Rita has no career in the first place with out all the drama.

    • Pri says:

      Word.
I too think she’s a decent singer too, and very beautiful and could have a great sense of style (she’s pretty capable of pulling of a classy look if she has no say in it; she’s just trashy in general which is shame) but her mouth and personality ruin everything good that’s going on for her. Her over eagerness was a problem from the start which immediately made a lot of people dislike her.

And yeah, much of what she said in this interview didn’t make sense to me. I don’t think I got anything at all.

      • Wonderbunny says:

Completely agree. What ever she thinks the (fashion) world needs, show it, don’t talk about it. If she really is the confidence boost that the fashion world needs, then people will see that. She doesn’t do herself any favours by rambling on and claiming that she’s now mature, sexy and confident. It makes her look the complete opposite!

    • Cynthia says:

      +1.

  6. Miss Wilson says:

There’s tons of trashy “punk” girls in Hollywood. There actually need to be more like Emma Watson, she’s a rare treasure.

    • Livealot says:

Right?! I thought she was describing Rihanna for a minute.
I love listening to her acoustically. As far as being drama filled, I think she is a product of her generation (social media/all bizness is public bizness)…. And she’s sort of a heart breaker (rob/Calvin).

  7. Wonderbunny says:

I didn’t understand any of that. None of it made any sense to me.

Anyway, I don’t think anyone would expect a Calvin Harris song to be deep. Unless we’re talking about bass.

  8. Maefabulous says:

Yeah your new music maybe ‘deeper’ – but you still won’t of written/produced/edited it. So take a seat, you thirsty trick.

  9. Cynthia says:

I think she’s talented but she really was too hyped up and badly marketed at her debut. Jay-Z and Roc Nationpushed her as “the next Rihanna” and imo it didn’t benefit her in the long run. Now she hasn’t a distinctive sound therefore she’s really invested in becoming a fashion It-girl.

  10. Imo says:

Skank? Trick? Trashy? I feel so bad when a starlet gets mangled here, even when it is merited. Then I feel like a dork for feeling bad lol.

  11. Diana B says:

    She’s so budget.

  12. Maria says:

No Rita, you are not punk, you’ve no spunk, go away.

  13. paranormalgirl says:

She’s about as deep as a puddle. And so very not punk. For punk attitude and style, may I introduce her to Patti Smith?

    • theoneandonly says:

I doubt she knows who Patti Smith or the Ramones are; Why are today’s pop stars so annoyingly self-absorbed – and not very talented. And why is it they spend more time marketing their “music” than actually try to write and produce decent stuff, like Beck.

  14. Amy says:

Right…don’t make the same mistake you made with Calvin again, try to write your own music and not depend on a boyfriend for publicity and content.

  15. kri says:

Imma step up onto her stage and not let her finish. B^tch, please. You will never be a Riri. You cannot even be Riri’s decoy stunt double. She grates on my nerve.

  16. Reece says:

I know more dudes she’s (maybe) slept with than songs. js
And no I don’t think I SHOULD have to google them.

  17. Lisa says:

I really like her on The Voice. She’s so funny. She makes this season watchable.

  18. M. S. says:

“But where’s that punk energy? That fun, crazy, respected but still like, ‘S–t, she’s just doing her thing’ person? That’s who I am!”

LOL, isn’t that basically a description of Rihanna?

  19. gilmore says:

I feel as if she thinks she is more famous than what she actually is? I guess in England she is well known, but here, let’s not pretend people are hyping you up that big sweetheart.
