Madonna fell down really hard during her BRIT Awards performance: ouch?!

madge RS

Madonna’s new face looks really good here, right? It’s a combination of spending the money on GOOD work (after years of spending money on bad work) plus Photoshop. Madonna covers the new issue of Rolling Stone and that was going to be the big story here, but then Madonna totally and completely WIPED OUT during her performance at the BRIT Awards last night. I feel sorry for her, but I’m still going to embed the Vine. Totally.

The set-up: this was Madonna’s first BRIT Awards performance in 20 years. She did not walk the carpet, and her performance was the last one of the evening. She performed “Living for Love,” the same single she performed at the Grammys. This performance was different than the Grammys, though, because it involved Madge wearing a giant Armani cape, and I guess one of her backup dancers was supposed to pull it off, and instead of the cape coming off, Madge went ass over tea kettle. Here’s the Vine:

She looks like she hit the stage hard. Apparently, she dropped her mic in the fall and missed a few lyrics, but she was able to get up and continue performing. Poor Madge. She really could have hurt herself!

As for the RS cover story, there are some very interesting quotes about Kanye, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift. You can see RS’s cover excerpt here. Some highlights:

On Kanye: “He’s a brilliant madman. He can’t help himself. Like, he doesn’t have the same filters other people have. He has to blurt things out—he’s always saying inappropriate stuff. But he also has brilliant ideas in the studio, if you can get him to pay attention long enough. I don’t always agree with the things he says or does—I don’t always like his music, even. But he’s a beautiful mess. I love him…I think he takes award shows too seriously…So that part of him I can’t relate to. Like, what’s the point of fighting for somebody to…like, ‘This person should have got it?’ Don’t come to an award show looking for justice!”

On Lady Gaga: “I don’t think she wants my crown…We live in a world where people like to pit women against each other. And this is why I love the idea of embracing other females who are doing what I’m doing. The only time I ever criticized Lady Gaga was when I felt like she blatantly ripped off one of my songs. It’s got nothing to do with ‘she’s taking my crown’ or ‘she’s in some space of mine.’ She has her thing. I do think she’s a very talented singer and songwriter. It was just that one issue. And everybody’s obviously run with it and turned it into a huge feud, which I think is really boring, quite frankly. And you know what? I don’t care anymore. Here’s the thing: one day everyone’s going to shut up about it. You’ll see! I have a plan.”

On Taylor Swift: “She has an opinion, and she’s going against the norm.So in that respect, she is similar to me, yeah. And also, people just want to give her a hard time all the time because they think she’s a goody-two-shoes, so of course I want to embrace her.”

[From Rolling Stone via E! News]

I actually think Madonna’s assessments are pretty dead on. I feel that way about Kanye too (much to everyone else’s chagrin): he’s crazy and petty and silly and he’s interesting and somewhat fascinating. He is a beautiful mess. I also think Madge is right about Gaga, only Gaga was coming for Madonna’s crown at one point, but that moment is over. And yes, Gaga did rip off Madonna’s song.

Oh, and Madge is fine. She posted this after the BRITs.

The fall was not funny, it looked painful, but the resulting image of her fallen down while all these grown-ass men on their fours with the horns mutely and stupidly stare at her, was inappropriately funny.

    • Mia V. says:

Hell tried to pull her and grandma said “no”.

    • MCraw says:

…the fact that I wondered if she broke her hip…………..

Glad she’s ok. The cape is beautiful tho.

      • homegrrrlll says:

I’m team Madonna re the ageist comments, but that fall was hip intense, not because of her age but the backwards angle and she caught it all on on a diagonal. Ouch. However, do we all need to start shopping at LLBEan for our 50+ wardrobe? I’ve been allergic to anything preppy my entire life. Does my basic nature become Aline skirts and peter pan collars just because I’m an older female?

      • Lucinda says:

People aren’t asking her to wear A-line skirts or shop at LL Bean. We are asking her to stop flashing her ass and wear clothes that flatter the age she is and the body she has. Not the age she wishes she were and the body she keep trying to get. That’s all.

    • Feebee says:

I thought the grown ass men were doing what they should have done. They didn’t panic but looked to her to see what the situation was. I sure if it was something serious they would have broken character.

      • Bread and Circuses says:

Yeah, dancers probably have a pretty good instinct for what to do if someone falls down. It’s an occupational hazard. They’ve done it themselves; they’ve watched others do it.

Sometimes you let the person shake it off. Sometimes you help dance them off the stage. And sometimes you stop dancing and do first aid, possibly while the rest of the troupe runs visual interference so the audience isn’t too horrified at what has clearly happened.

    • FLORC says:

How they reacted was the best. They improved some moves to make it appear more planned than an accident. If they got up on their hind legs it would have brought more attention to it.
This was a proper wardrobe malfunction.

  2. Kiddo says:

    Good excerpt, bad fall.

    • mimif says:

I came fully prepared to giggle, but that looked horrible. Poor Madge…maybe it’s time to retire the antics.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yeah, my first thought was “she could have broken a hip at her age.”

      • Kiddo says:

Yeah, but I feel like this for a lot of stage acts, age aside. I saw a clip of the superbowl Katy Perry act, and all I could think was, what if she had fallen? The rig looked so flimsy and humans are an imperfect group. Some of this stuff just seems unnecessarily risky.

      • bellenola says:

With all due respect, I don’t understand the ‘hip breaking’ comments. She’s only 56! Probably in better shape than most of us as well.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yes, she’s in great shape, and that’s probably why nothing broke. I’m 58, and I’m in good shape (not Madonna shape, but healthy) and I’m starting to think about breaking bones when falling. I think of her as my age.

      • Mia V. says:

Why retire? She fell, awful, but got up and as the great professional she is, finished the show. Would you make that comment if it was someone younger?

      • crab says:

I was wondering the same thing Mia! That woman is in better shape than a lot of 25 year olds I know! We all get older and if we don’t well than there is a problem!

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I can only speak for myself, but I think Madonna gets the “hang it up” posts because she seems so desperate to cling to her fame by clinging to her youth. She’s in great shape, yes, on the outside with the help of lots of hard work and lots of plastic surgery. But there’s something about her that makes you wonder about the shape she’s in mentally. I see no growth, no grace, no self-love, just the same old tricks she was doing at twenty in the same costumes with the same attempt to shock and cause controversy, but nobody really cares anymore. It’s sad to me.

      • bellenola says:

GoodNames, you certainly have a point there. I mean, what does Madonna still have to prove? She’s a freaking ICON for christsakes. But at the same time I hate that society for the most part can’t handle a woman not in her twenties out there, doing her thing. Makes me sad for all of us.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

You have a valid point, too, bellenola. Very much so, and I didn’t mean to be “that person.” It’s very specific to Madonna. I wonder if she makes ME feel old, and that’s why it bothers me? We’re about the same age, and maybe a part of me is uncomfortable watching her trying to be young because that’s not the way I’m handling aging? I’ve never thought about it before, but maybe it’s more my problem than hers.

    • Snazzy says:

      That did look painful

    • Esmom says:

That pretty much sums it up for me, too. I’m sure she will be feeling that today, ouch.

    • Feebee says:

My first thought was oh it was only two steps! But then, but she is 58…. Not in a bad way but just that she’s brilliant and fab at 58 but still 58 and it could have been injurious (is that word?).

Glad she’s okay and just more proof that she is the ultimate performer/professional/trooper.

Over time she has used stronger language over Gaga’s rip off… Or maybe just less veiled. I don’t know why she didn’t just sue her at the time. Born This Way is much more Express Yourself than say Sam Smith’s song is Tom Petty’s. Of course she may have been aware than a female artist suing another female artist would be treated much differently.

    • L says:

At least we know she wasn’t lip syncing. Unless ‘hold on, ack’ is the actual lyric of the song. (You can even her the mic hit)

Glad she wasn’t injured. That looked painful.

    • Tiffany :) says:

This reminds me of the time Beyoncé fell down the stairs on her face mid-song and got up and just kept going. I get sympathy pains looking at falls that rough! OUCH! I really do have respect for her and Madonna for getting up and continuing. I wouldn’t have faulted either one for stopping to cry!

Madonna is so lucky (smart) that she turned to her side half way down the stairs, so her hips bore the brunt of the fall when she hit the ground. If she had allowed her momentum to continue as it started, with her neck being the lead body part heading towards the ground, she could have seriously hurt herself, possibly permanently.

  3. Dani2 says:

In the words of Edna ‘E’ Mode: “no capes!!”

On a serious note though, she just got up and carried on which was very professional of her. I bet someone got fired as soon as they were backstage though.

  4. Granger says:

Yes, Madonna looks very good — especially because that’s clearly a photo of her face from 25 years ago.

    • Loopy says:

lol yes, its soooooo photo shopped its not even funny. There were pictures of her at the airport a few days ago and she looked like she had really bad work done.

    • Micha says:

hahaha I agree that is totally NOT her current face. DANG we live in an age of illusions.

    • Catk says:

Her hand, her neck, wow. No visible signs of age? The photoshopping is out of control.

    • Cindy says:

That’s what I was thinking too-old photo or extremely photoshopped.

    • Esmom says:

Yes the photoshop was clearly set to full throttle. It almost looks like an illustration.

    • Tiffany :) says:

She’s still in her Marilyn phase, apparently.

    • Mintessence (the original Minty) says:

This is older Madonna copying younger Madonna copying Marilyn (circa 1990). All the available power of Photoshop was used for that cover.

    • TeaAndSympathy says:

I agree, Granger. As soon as I clicked on the story, my first thought was, “Why are they using such an old pic of Madonna on the cover of RS?” I was/am sure I saw this photo years ago. Then I thought it was a vintage copy of RS, until I saw the featured stories at the bottom right corner. Still not completely convinced, I zoomed in to look at the date of the magazine… What’s going on? Is it a new photo after the latest and far better cosmetic enhancement and über-photoshop or is it an old pic? I need a cup of strong tea and my eyes tested…

  5. Anna says:

Honestly I thought the fall was pretty funny, if it was anyone else I probably would’ve felt bad but she’s said the n word so I’ve stopped feeling bad if she messes up or falls tbh.

  6. Dońt kill me i'm french says:

Ouch!!! I thought it looked painful

  7. Louise says:

she really went down. The sad thing is, I could not watch it for more than a minute. She was kind of skipping at one point and looked really old and she can’t sing live no matter what. She was very flat. Even before she fell, I thought “noooooo”. I wish she would give it up and let us remember her how she was. Was a huge fan back in the day, now I cringe. I hate the fact that I cringe! not being ageist, honestly. She would be an amazing producer but should not sing or perform live anymore.

  8. maeliz says:

Could have been worse. Time to sit down

  9. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I don’t like Madonna, and, true confession, I would have probably giggled if she’d just tripped a little, but that was a serious fall. She could have broken something. I admire her for getting right back up and continuing the song.
I thought some of her comments were less nauseating than usual.

    • Kiddo says:

“Confession Tour”, and handy portable x-ray /radiation imagery screen on stage, in case of breaks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iD7FCeGOWs

I could not take more than 30 seconds of this.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

You lasted longer than I did. Good grief.

      • mimif says:

Ugh. I watched the whole thing (on silent) and those Steeplechase clips are wretched.

      • Kiddo says:

You must listen to it with sound, it’s the only way to repent for the wonky eye post.
        It’s like self flagellation.

      • Jayna says:

The Confessions Tour is the best pop show ever. Those x-rays on the screen backdrop are of her bones taken when she fell off of her horse and had fractures.

But the pop show was brilliant. I’ve watched it on DVD like eight times or more over the years since 2006. It was when Madge was at her absolute best and most artistic compared to these days

      • Miss M says:

I agree Jayna! I went to that your at Madison square garden.

  10. jen2 says:

Good on her for going on with the show. Though she is going to be bruised and will most likely have some serious issues moving today with how hard she fell. But, it could have been a lot worse….she could have been impaled on those horns.

  11. Louise says:

On another note. Take a look at Daily Mail pics of the presenters with Kim K. The presenters are very famous in the UK…and known for being very short. I think they are only 5’5″ – 5’7 maximum. Kim has huge heels on and doesn’t even come up to their height. Is she even 5′ 2″? Also, the jumpsuit really shows how ridiculous the butt implants are.

  12. Talie says:

I felt bad for her! That looked painful.

  13. Jayna says:

That dancer just yanked that cape back hard, not knowing Madonna couldn’t get it untied yet, and that was a horrible fall as she went flying off three steps backwards landing on her back. She could have broken her neck.
But what a pro. She gets up and continues on obviously shaken and I’m sure in a lot of pain.

A couple of years ago I jumped up to answer the phone, across the room and my foot caught in my wide pajama type sweats and propelled me a few feet and my face hit the side of a table as I went down. I could not get up. I was doubled over in so much pain. I was crying and my leg and face were killing me. I was shaken for an hour and massive bruising appearing the next morning. There’s no way I could have gotten back up and performed. I thought I fractured something I was in so much pain.

Much admiration for Madonna on this for getting up and pulling it off. That was a hard fall.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I was thinking the same. I used to have two cats, and I tripped over them going down the stairs and fell a$$ over tea kettle all the way down. I just had to lie there moaning and crying and cursing for minutes. I can’t imagine springing back up and singing.

    • Kori says:

So true!! I am super clumsy and I’ve fallen just about every way and where. Last big fall was in Mallorca–you really shouldn’t take photos as you’re walking across the street. Tripped right over the curb and busted up my kneecap. I continued limping around the town but it was super painful. I couldn’t kneel for 2 months.

  14. Mzizkrizten says:

Damn that looked painful. Anyone else her age would’ve broken a hip! Maybe she really is a vampire LOL

  15. FKA Pri says:

I knew she did her face but I guess her hands too.

And that fall was bad. She could have hurt. Girl’s strong.

Besides, Madge is an ol’ pro. She’s been through soo much. She knows it’ll blow over.

  16. I Choose Me says:

Ouch. That looks painful. She could have seriously been hurt. Good thing she’s in such great shape and she’s a consummate professional so I’m not at all surprised she got up and kept singing.

  17. bette says:

She seems to be always trying to channel Marilyn Monroe in her pics, but to me she looks more like the Bette Davis character in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?

  18. M.J. says:

That fall looked bad. I am really glad she’s ok. She of course handled it all like a pro and continued on, because Madonna is nothing if not professional. I actually liked this interview with her. Maybe my Madonna love can return? Maybe? One can hope…

  19. Rhiley says:

Falling in front of people is the absolute worst. I live in a smallish city with lots of uneven sidewalks and I am clumsy as hell. I fall a good bit. A few weeks ago I was late for a meeting and had to cross a busy street. What happened? I ate it. And I was carrying an unopened diet coke that burst all over my bag. But the worst part was when some sweet college student came running up to me, saying, “Ma’am, are you alright?” It was very sweet of him, but I was hoping no one saw. But when you are splat in the middle of the street, everyone is going to see. So Madonna handled it like a pro and no shade for falling. If anything, I feel bad for her, but she seems to have moved on pretty well. Social media may take a few days, though.

    • Esmom says:

Yes, I’ve tripped and fallen twice in the last year while out jogging, so embarrassing. But not as embarrassing as an incident as one of my best friends years ago, when she was heading out on a first date. She took the train and as she was coming down the stairs from the platform she fell and ripped both the knees in her pants — and still went on the date, bloody knees, holes and all!

  20. Jessica says:

‘Madonna to be euthanized after crippling fall’ .. Sad. http://dandygoat.com/madonna-to-be-euthanized-after-crippling-fall

  21. Cinderella says:

That was a bad fall. She skipped an entire step before hitting the ground. She may say she’s fine, but if that floor was concrete, something had to get jammed in there. This would be a bad fall for any age, really.

  22. M.A.F. says:

At least we know she was singing live.

  23. Sea Dragon says:

I watched the video a number of times last night. It was a BAD fall but a little part of me wonders if Madonna, the original stunt queen, handled it so that she’d be all that anyone talked about today. There was absolutely no expression of shock as she went down (The Daily Mail has a frame by frame) and all but two of the dancers stayed _perfectly_ still. Of the two that did move, one straightened her cape and the other kind of reached out to help but seemed to think twice. Again, it’s just a little theory but I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if it was true.

  24. Lindy79 says:

I was watching it as it happened and it was one of those things where you just sat there in silence thinking “did I just see that?”. Even her dancers didn’t move or rush to her, the audience just went silent.
I can’t imagine getting up and singing after that, she would have been severely winded.

  25. Nicolette says:

As for Gaga, yes at one time she seemed to be reaching for that crown. But after watching the video clip of her performance of The Sound of Music tribute it’s clear what a talent she really is. She sounded amazing and Madonna could never have sang half as well. I hope it’s a new leaf turning for Gaga and that she will drop the outrageous antics and show what she’s really capable of.

    • justme says:

Yes I was surprised by Gaga – although not as much as I would have been a year ago. My teenage daughter asked for the album she did with Tony Bennett and just hearing (not seeing) her made me realize that she has real talent. She’d be smart to stick with that and forget the other shenanigans. Unlike so many of today’s “singers”, she can actually sing.

  26. Dree says:

Felt sorry for Madonna that looked painful, i am not a big fan but the thing about madonnas fall was that it shows that she sings live during live shows… unlike some other.. (cough.. katy perry).

  27. nicegirl says:

Best wishes for a full and fast recovery. She still could be hurt and hiding it – she’s not 12.

  28. Adrien says:

I hope she’s really OK. It was a painful fall. I thought she handled it well. Kudos to her for singing live. At leat we know she’s not lipsynching.

  29. Lucy says:

Good to know she’s fine, that looked painful. And I liked the excerpts!

  30. Ice Queen says:

Very professional of her to just get up and continue singing. That fall looked painful, anyone, even younger people could’ve ended up hurt. I’m glad she’s ok.

  31. Beckysuz says:

That magazine cover is like reverse Dorian Gray

  32. Madpoe says:

Damn was not expecting to see it on loop like that. Ouch.

Her RS cover reminds me of her True Blue/Who’s that Girl days.

  33. TessD says:

Oh, gawd, I was also thinking “did she brake her hip?!! she’s old!” and then I remembered she’s 56, not 76 :)))

    • rachel says:

TessD – not funny. I have 2 friends in their 40’s who have osteoporosis, it’s not just the little old ladies. If you are super thin or over exercise, this can wreak havoc on your bones as can many other lifestyle related factors – e.g. smoking.

  34. Joh says:

Man , she is a trooper and magnificent performer!
That said, I never bought a single album of hers, just not interested.
If someone had tried to break her fall, she could have been hurt much worse.

  35. Veritas says:

I think it’s time to hang up the cape memaw before u really brake a hip or something else.

  36. Grace says:

Doesn’t she always fall? I feel like I’ve seen her fall countless times on live shows and concerts. She always gets up and goes on.

  37. Maya says:

Doesn’t she ride horses? I keep reading how terrible this fall looked and compared to falling off a horse it wasn’t bad. I do ride and have seen lots of falls so perhaps I am somewhat desensitized to ‘normal’ falls.

  38. Mintessence (the original Minty) says:

Funny, how people say Born This Way ripped off Express Yourself, considering that part of the chorus of Express Yourself copied the chorus of Respect Yourself by The Staples Singers. And Madonna’s video for the song is a colorized rip-off of Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis”. Did Madonna ask permission to sample from The Staples Singers or from Lang’s estate? Of course not. So, Madonna is a flat out hypocrite.

I don’t doubt that Gaga can be reductive, but Madonna has been far worse and has been copying for much longer: http://madonnaisacopypaste.blogspot.com/

I admit that I laughed when I saw the fall. She seemed okay. The one who was in real trouble was the dancer she was going to yell at when they got backstage. You know, if she’s going to attack anyone in private, it’s going to be the “help” and not Armani for the flawed design of his cape.

  39. Gail says:

Im just glad she’s ok. I can’t believe all the rude people in this world. I bet you wouldn’t laugh if it were you.

  40. Naddie says:

As much as I dislike her, I cringed when I read she’s fallen. I’m happy she hasn’t broken anything, usually old people don’t have the same luck.
And Kanye, oh Kanye. There’s something endearing about this jerk, and I wonder if I’ve been brainwashed by midia for thinking like that.

  41. taxi says:

That fall was very bad & could have caused a broken neck or skull fracture. Nothing to do with age. Props to her for continuing the show & I hope her injuries heal quickly.
