George Clooney attends charity event solo, jokes ‘My wife’s the smart one’

Here are some photos of George Clooney inside the NYC gala for SeriousFun Children’s Network on Monday night. The theme of the night was a celebration of Paul Newman’s legacy. Amal Clooney did not attend, from what I can see. But George and Amal have moved to NYC for the duration of his new film, Money Monster, which will be directed by Jodie Foster. I think Amal will find work commutes from NYC a lot easier, don’t you? That being said, I’m actually sort of surprised by how much Amal has changed her schedule around to suit George’s work schedule. When he was in LA for work, she was in LA. When he wanted to vacation in Cabo twice in a month, she went along.

At this event, George got on stage and played Chairman of the Board, but no one minded because… hey, it’s for a good cause. He talked about how the money goes to the kids’ camps Paul Newman founded and Clooney even joked, “My wife is the smart one.” Go here to read more.

Meanwhile, George has just been named “the most stylish man of all time.” Seriously? What about Cary Grant? This is the top ten, in descending order: Clooney, Sean Connery, Cary Grant, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Will Smith, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Pierce Brosnan, Michael Jackson and LL Cool J. Damn, Kanye West is going to be SO MAD that he didn’t make this list. For what it’s worth, I don’t agree with this list at all. People gave too much favor to modern, living celebrities. And I’m sorry, but any list that includes Scarfy Depp and Brad Pitt’s weird hobo style is useless.

He looks good but I also don’t agree with the list. Reminds me of the one you posted a while ago about the most admired woman, which also seemed more like a “most recognizable name” list more than anything else.

    • Santolina says:

Yeah, no. How many crates of tequila did someone receive anonymously to put Clooney ahead of Cary Grant on this list? Clooney should stop trying to rewrite history. He should not be ahead of Cary Grant on this list or ANY LIST, period.

  2. Kiddo says:

    Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp?

    • noway says:

Agree!!! A lot of time Brad and Johnny look unkempt, not stylish. Where is Steve McQueen? Any male style list of all time that doesn’t have Cary Grant winning really is bogus to me.

    • Bugglez says:

Oh please…bishes will never be over it….I’m a stylist…and men bring in pictures of Brad Pitt more than any other actor/celeb (from his brush cut in mr and mrs..to his his fury do’ to his trousers and shades) …they also started wearing more pork pies and caps because he was wearing them and looked dang good doing it. Face it, men think Pitt is cool – please get over the tv hack he left a kajillion years ago…he doesn’t need to pay for all eternity because J-anus is 50 and childless. Thx.

    • Hazel says:

I’m a huge Johnny Depp fan–truly–so I say this with love, Johnny always looks like he’s in need of a bath.

    • Jane says:

Yes. Many men try to look like Johnny Depp and copy his style.

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Elvis? Um, I remember Elvis’s tummy hanging over a glittery white jumpsuit with a belt sporting an enormous “E” on it and lapels out to his shoulders. That wasn’t stylish at the time, so I don’t know about this list. Cary Grant, though – yes.

    • Boxy Lady says:

Skinny Elvis was divine. He was fat for only a few years. People are still copying his style and he’s been dead for more than 35 years!

    • Hazel says:

Agree with E–Young Elvis was gorgeous & the snazziest dresser! He was snazzy starting from an early age. I had the opportunity to visit both Graceland & the Elvis Birthplace in Tupelo–from early childhood, Elvis was interested in looking good & dressing great.

  4. Ankhel says:

I don’t get it. Where is the joke?

    • noway says:

Apparently he muffed up how many camps they had, so it made no sense then apologized saying his wife was the smart one. Not really that funny, but did get a lot of headlines.

  5. Allie says:

    Is that a joke though?

  6. Catelina says:

clooney usually looks good but he isnt stylish. being handsome and looking nice in a standard suit or tux doesnt mean you have ‘style’. as for this charity event, it looks nice. george is good at this crowd pleasing stuff, and that picture of him and meryl is cute.

  7. beep says:

His style is not good. He looks good on the red carpet but other than that he wears dad jeans. Depp & Pitt have horrible style – but I bet they love being on best dressed lists. Both try too hard To look young and hipster-ish. I never really pay attention to will smiths style because he is hardly ever photographed these days.

    I like Ryan Reynolds style.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Brad’s style reminds me of two things: He’s not really into fashion, etc, but when he does do it, he thinks he looks GOOD. Lol. My dad is the same way. He’ll wear all the same color (BEIGE) and not get why everyone’s rolling their eyes. Johnny seems like a fashionista, who thinks he’s FINE. Good Lord. I have never seen a person that rich, try SO HARD to look homeless. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone go so overboard with the accessories than Johnny. It’s ridic.

    • Jane says:

You think Depp cares about these things? I guess that’s the reason he wasn’t present when he was awarded the CFDA Fashion Award. How does he try to look young when he dresses like a cowboy?

  8. EC says:

I have to say – wherever Amal is, I think she is working. I think it was just after Christmas when she turned up at to represent Armenia in that genocide case, no? It sounded like the case needed a ton of prep work (as international human rights cases generally do) and I don’t think she would have been able to show up and work if she wasn’t well versed with intimate knowledge of the case. So New York, California, Cabo, I’m guessing she brings her work with her. Just my opinion – she isn’t in a field where she can blow it off, go on vacations, and still maintain her (really good) reputation.

ETA: George does look like a very stylish banker here for what it’s worth.

    • Sara says:

Intimate knowledge of the case? Based upon the snippets I heard, she didn’t even get basic historical facts right, just spewed out a bunch of trite ‘opinions’, which is probably why the President asked her to conclude swiftly.

  9. Rhiley says:

Dick Van Dyke would be on my list. In his day, he could wear a starched white shirt and skinny tie like no other.

  10. original kay says:

Because time is infinite, I don’t lend much credence to “all time” lists.

He is ok, he always looks nice and has a great smile. But major swoons for Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, and yes yes please Sean Connery.

    • Armondo says:

Agreed. As an all-time most stylish list goes this one stinks. Poser Clooney looks good in a suit or tux just like practically every other man on the planet, nothing special. I think Thomas Jefferson was stylish, so was Prince Edward. This list is so biased, good Lord, put the SS on the list. Scum of the earth no doubt, but they were dressed well, if we’re talking about making an impression with a distinct style.

  11. FKA Pri says:

Brad Pitt and Depp most stylish of ALL time? ALL TIME? Really?? Are you high?
MJ also doesn’t sit right with me for some reason.

  12. boredblond says:

His style is, most of the time, a grey tee and baggy jeans. And his self-effacing aw shucks folks comments have been constant from day one..and were getting old a decade ago. I’ve noticed that either he or she have a pic or plant every week..keep our incorporation relevant!

  13. Suzanne says:

Am I imagining it…or has his much grayer hair of “before Amal”…suddenly gotten darker on top? I think he’s coloring it…to lessen the amount of gray….probably so he doesn’t look like her father when they’re together. I just wish she’d stop leaning sideways to avoid standing up taller than him whenever they’re photo’ed together.
He needs to drop mentioning “my wife” every time he opens his mouth. Get over it…you did take the plunge…you are married…and we all know it…thanks to your PR people. Now stop acting like you’ve made some major accomplishment by committing to one woman. And she’s not THE smartest woman on the planet…so stop telling us how smart she is. She married you…be thankful and call it a day.

  14. Em says:

LOVE that they put LL Cool J on the list!

  15. Amelie says:

For me, Fred Astaire would top the list of “the most stylish man of all time.” It was not just a matter of what he wore, but what happened when he put the garments on. He moved with such (masculine) grace even when he wasn’t dancing.

Re: George, he certainly has put on weight since the wedding. I guess Amal’s strict diet ain’t working. I am curious about Amal not attending the mentioned awards ceremony…did both of them attend the Oscars? I couldn’t find any picture of them.

  16. Lorenzo says:

Just read that smarty pants is defending Gloria Arrayo, another criminal on her high profile client SH*t list.

    Shame on you, George.

Your hunger for power makes you forget about what is wrong and what is right.
