Meghan McCain is latest victim of weight bashing

Perez Hiltons OMFB Birthday Party

Meghan McCain, daughter of presidential candidate John McCain, is making quite a name for herself as an outspoken, middle-of-the-road young Republican. In her blog at The Daily Beast, she’s taken on members of her own party for being too sectarian, and even ripped pundit Ann Coulter a new one. This made her the target of another conservative female pundit, the loathsome Laura Ingraham, who slammed Meghan for gaining weight on the campaign trail. Well, Meghan decided to fight back via her blog, and defended other women in the media who are constantly under attack for their figures- including Hillary Clinton.

Recently my not-size-0 body has come under fire again by the conservative pundit Laura Ingraham. On her radio show recently, she sarcastically commented that I was “too plus-sized to be a cast member on the television show The Real World” and needled me about my weight with a comment about Barbie’s 50th anniversary. Instead of intellectually debating our ideological differences about the future of the Republican Party, Ingraham resorted to making fun of my age and weight, in the fashion of the mean girls in high school.

I have been teased about my weight and body figure since I was in middle school, and I decided a very long time ago to embrace what God gave me and live my life positively, attempting to set an example for other girls who may suffer from body image issues. I have nothing to hide: I am a size 8 and fluctuated up to a size 10 during the campaign. It’s ridiculous even to have this conversation because I am not overweight in the least and have a natural body weight.

In today’s society this is, unfortunately, predictable. Everyone from Jessica Simpson to Tyra Banks, Oprah Winfrey, and Hillary Clinton has fallen victim to this type of image-oriented bullying. Recent pictures of Pierce Brosnan’s wife, Keely Shaye Smith, on the beach in her bikini raised criticism about her weight and choice of bathing suit—as if the woman should be wearing a giant muumuu to swim in the ocean. After Kelly Clarkson’s recent appearance on American Idol, the first commentary I read on the Internet was about her weight gain instead of her singing.

My weight was consistently criticized throughout the campaign. Once someone even suggested I go to a plastic surgeon for liposuction. Afterward, I blogged about loving my body and suggested critics focus their insecurities about women’s bodies elsewhere. On the other side, my mother was constantly slammed for being too skinny, so the weight obsession of the media and our culture goes both ways. It also goes to both parties. Hillary Clinton has consistently received criticism for her pantsuits and figure. Whatever someone’s party, these criticisms are quite obviously both wrong and distracting from the larger issues at play.

The question remains: Why, after all this time and all the progress feminists have made, is weight still such an issue? And in Laura’s case, why in the world would a woman raise it? Today, taking shots at a woman’s weight has become one of the last frontiers in socially accepted prejudice.

[From The Daily Beast]

Bravo, Meghan. This is probably the most eloquent celebrity response to this topic I’ve ever read. Notice how she doesn’t even try to make us believe she’s a size two, like a couple other celebs I could name. Instead, she just asks, why is this an issue? And she’s absolutely right. As I said yesterday, I don’t care if Jessica Simpson can’t fit into her short shorts. If I’m going to go to her concert, I only care that she can sing well. And I really don’t need to see a week-long special report on CNN about Oprah’s weight gain. I am not a fan of Meghan’s dad, but I’m with her on this topic. Enough, already!

I read her blog during the campaign mostly to see what she was wearing! I love her outfits! I go between a 10 and 12 so its fun to get ideas from what she’s wearing.

  2. Lee says:

whatever her weight, I think she’s beautiful

  3. Lem says:

She no size 8 either or 10…just saying
she is a little over weight but so what?

with all the bloated, overweight, out of shape, debaucherous, political fat cats, why on earth would woman take on another woman (from their own party no less) over her weight.
Because they are scared! With the entire party in a tailspin and the infighting and out and out ridiculousness… Meghan seems to have a good square perspective on her shoulders. She speaks to what she knows. No comments (instead of blowing smoke) on matters she does not have a grasp. Good for Meghan rattling some cages. She, so far, seems to prove her point w/o nasty derogatory inflammations. Stands behind her opinion, doesn’t wavier on her stances (achem John?). Girl is making some waves, they should be embracing her. It’s not like anyone else is rounding up more Elephants for the room.
    *thank goodness for spell check*

  4. ash says:

    she’s a beautiful girl. oh those haters…

  5. Lizbeth says:

Come on now, Meghan, I respect and applaud what you said but as someone who’s size 8 jeans live in a bin in the basement, you are no size 8.

I think you undermine your point by understating your size. If you are proud of your body, give us a loud and proud size 10 sometimes 12.

  6. Because I Say So says:

Those criticizing her size are completely missing the point. (Rolls eyes) She looks like she has a rather large chest and is not very tall, so her “true size” as you put it would be difficult to determine anyway. Happy to see that she doesn’t take after her crazy-eyed, pill popping mama.

I thought from the header photo that it was Kate Hudson at first.

  7. CandyKay says:

I like her. It’ll be interesting to see what she does in the future.

  8. Lem says:

I don’t think we are missing the point. To a degree by stating she is a size 8 she feeds into the whole better not be double digits, it’s o.k. to criticize a woman’s pant size phenom. unintentionally probably, but like lizbeth so beautifully put it, you can’t defend loving your body by lying about what size it actually is.

  9. Sara says:

And she’s a Presidential candidate’s daughter? What is the world turning to? One thing I could always count with was the fact that the candidate’s children were always a wasting sack of low IQ.

    I can’t take this!

    Also, bravo. Stick it, girl!

  10. Trillion says:

Can’t wait to hear Laura Ingraham take on Rush Limbaugh’s weight, drug, sex problem. Hurry up already!

  11. Feebee says:

I believe she’s a size 8 or 10… I think her bust size is a little deceptive and makes her overall size look a little bigger….

But that’s not really the point here is it?

I’ve said it numerous times before. For all the talk about a “sisterhood”, it’s a fallacy. Women are for the most part pretty horrible to other women particularly those women in a position of power or even just an audience. No matter how evolved we try to get as a whole there will always be those unfortunate few who feel the need to belittle because they are as shallow as petrie dishes and probably have low self esteem themselves despite being successful in their field.

Ann and Laura really need to take the sticks out of the asses (yes I’ve gone to their level) and answer Meghan’s political arguments, leave the bitchiness at home.

  12. Bodhi says:

LOL @ Sara! Ditto MSat, don’t care for her daddy, but she rocks!

  13. elisha says:

She very well could be a size ten at her heaviest. You’d be suprised at what a difference height makes. Look how much taller her mother is.

People are always shocked when I say I’m a twelve or sometimes even a 14. They actually think I’m much smaller than I really am because I’m so tall. Likewise, short women seem like they wear bigger sizes than they really do.

  14. mae says:

for all of you who are indeed missing the point of the entire issue by saying she’s a liar, look at how small she really is. Maybe she’d be bigger than an 8 or 10 if she was 5’7, but she doesn’t look that tall to me…

  15. morgs says:

When these girls stick out their toungues and say “A size 2/4/6/8/10 isn’t fat”, they sound ridiculous. They sound that way because barking out a number to “prove” you aren’t fat is just dumb.

I know, I’m not arguing this point well, but it just bugs me when they say they aren’t fat and then broadcast their size. Just say you aren’t fat and that you’re healthy.

  16. jess says:

she is NOT fat at all. and i agree that her chest is deceiving. her waist is decently small underneath them

  17. Lem says:

maybe she’s be a bigger size if she was taller? logic much?
your height has jack to do with the size of your tush. a sized 10 rear is a sized 10 rear at 5’2 or 5’9. Just different inseams. Yes there will be some difference in how you are percieved at a distance but it’s not going to change the tag in your jeans. Yes a 5’9 body can better carry a size 10 tush than a 5’2 body but it is still a size 10 rear.
I’ll give you she has big boobs. that doesn’t negate the extra 25 pounds around her waist hips and thighs. By saying she is an 8, clearly changes the argument from ‘they couldn’t come up with something better to attack her for than her weight’ to ‘um sorry no, you are not an 8’ Which kind of proves my point for me. We are no longer debating any politics what-so-ever; we are debating the poor girls jean size. I saw her 3 nights ago in an interview. If that was a size 8 suit she was wearing I’ll eat my measuring tape!

  18. FF says:

What’s her weight got to do with her political opinion? Just seems as if her critics were stumped for a comeback and settled for a ‘well, you’re fat, so there’ retort.

    Seems rather juvenile.

It’s as if they want women to be thin before taking them seriously and then when they are thin they get dismissed as aesthetically-obsessed bimbos. Can’t win.

  19. MARKY MARK says:

This is the 2nd time in so many weeks I’ve heard something from this young woman and I am really starting to like her. She displays confidence, self awareness and seems very comfortable with herself.
This is the type of “new Republican” we should be keeping an eye on.

  20. javelin says:

I worked retail for several years and would definitely peg her as a size 8. She looks voluptuous and healthy, not fat in the least.

  21. MaiGirl says:

Larua Ingraham just proved her point. If Republicans want to attract new blood (Remember, they want their party to be “off the hook!”) and nourish up and coming talent, they must stop being so mean-spirited and bellicose. Meghan could be a real player in the future with some good ideas and a positive attitude. Why tear her down? She is not fat, (but I do believe that she isn’t a size 8, but I also agree that is beside the point) and even if she was, so what? She had some good points, and we should listen to her. I am not a Republican, but I hope she maintains her ideals.

  22. barneslr says:

Those of you who are insisting that you somehow magically “know” she is lying about her size just appear like a bunch of idiots. Pul-leez.

She is a lovely young woman and I 100% agree with her statement.

  23. Hieronymus Grex says:

Oh so now it’s weight bashing, you wacky kids and you’re invented persecutions- like there isn’t enough discrimination in the world, you have to invent more. Fat is fat is fat, you either are or you’re not. It’s how you choose to deal with it that makes the difference.

  24. ChristinaT says:

    why don’t people believe she’s a size 8?

  25. Dating Misanthrope says:

How shameful is it this this accomplished and articulate young woman is put on the defense about her appearance? She is NOT an actress or a model. God forbid we actually judge her on the content of her words. And the people that have ARGUING that she is a size 12, REALLY??!?!? Is that what your “take away” is from this story?

  26. Mandy says:

It always pisses me off when people attack the children of politicians, regardless of which party they belong to. It was disgusting when Rush Limbaugh made cruel remarks about Chelsea Clinton during her awkward stage (yeah, because he’s ever so dreamy!), just as it was when people wanted to crucify the Bush twins for doing the same stupid things that most of us have done on spring break. I was so relieved that the Democrats never raised the issue of Bristol Palin’s pregnancy during the campaign, but I do wonder if Republicans will return the favor and leave the Obama girls alone. But if they do start talking about her daughters, I bet that Michelle Obama would give ’em hell. She seems to have that “Mama Bear” thing going on (and that’s a compliment)!

  27. Zoe (The Other One) says:

What a beautiful, intelligent and articulate young woman. I had no clue who she was til I read this story but I will certainly be making a point of reading her blog from now on.

  28. RhymesWithSilver says:

    She’s a size 8-10. She’s short like me- I have a similar figure. Naturally, a 5’9″ girl who’s a size 10 looks a lot more slender than a 5’3″ girl in the same pants.

  29. ? says:

Not sure on her height, but when you’re short and have large tits it makes you appear much chunkier than you actually are.

She has a good head on her shoulders, her reply was classy and to the point.

  30. raven says:

Loved Trillion’s post–Laura dishing Mr. Piggy instead of a young woman just finding her voice.

  31. Sarah says:

Good for her to stand up for herself as she should since she is a Columbia grad, a published author and a beautiful intelligent young woman. Her parents must have done something right.

  32. Nony says:

    She’s stunning. And well spoken!

  33. paranel says:

Republican party can go to hell for the economic hell they drove us in .

  34. Leo P says:

So she criticizes some of her fellow conservative’s opinions and their idea of a rebuttal is an attack on her weight? What is this, elementary school? Yea, this will go a LONG way in improving the Rupblican/Conservative image.

If she was as skinny as her mum, they’d say she has an eating disorder. Ignore the haters, Meghan. Do your thing.

  35. Taild says:

It can feel alone out there blogging and not having anyone remark or answer back even if you recognize folks are calling.) I always consider of annotates like clapping, even if they are poor.

  36. Do you do all your marketing whitehat or blackhat?

  37. Sean says:

At the risk of sounding sexist, Meghan is not only gorgeous but a well spoken intelligent individual

As a man, we “notice” a beautiful woman whether she is intelligent or not, I once recall meeting this girl and an ensuing conversation and she quite frankly asked: Do you think we would be having this conversation if I were the “Dog faced woman?”

    She had a point

Meghan, you are in no way fat, chunky or overweight, anytime you need a knee to perch on :-0) Kidding
