Salma Hayek explains her excessive cleavage at the Golden Globes

Salma Hayek had people talking when she showed up at the Golden Globes in an off white gown with her cleavage hoisted up – drawing all the focus away from her very tastefully done makeup and upswept hair. Salma frequently shows her assets, and this outfit wasn’t all that different from her 2007 draped Golden Globe dress, except that her boobs were slightly higher up and pushed out as if they were announcing her imminent arrival. We may have a good explanation for that, as Salma told In Style that her new husband, François Henri-Pinault, arranged to have the dress custom made by a designer for Bottega Veneta, one of the companies he oversees:

“François was my stylist,” Hayek, 42, tells InStyle for its April issue about the champagne Bottega Veneta gown she wore to the Golden Globes. “It was Christmas and I was just overwhelmed with so many things to do. He said, ‘Let me help you. How can I help?’

“And I said, ‘Well, I have to pick a dress for the Golden Globes,’ ” Hayek continues, recounting her conversation with hubby François Henri-Pinault, whose company PPR oversees Balenciaga, Gucci and YSL. “So Bottega Veneta sent swatches and sketches, and François worked with the designer Tomas Maier, and he took care of everything.”

The two wed in a Valentine’s Day ceremony at City Hall in Paris after the InStyle interview was conducted. When asked about her feelings for her husband, the actress was succinct, saying simply: “He’s the best.”

That’s a sweet story and it’s no wonder that Salma ended up looking incredibly sexy in that dress. It may have been a little over the top, but I’m sure her male fans didn’t mind. If my husband styled a dress for me not only would it be low cut, it would also involve a mini skirt or at least a very high side slit, so at least Salma was covered below her ample chest.

Salma seems to have realized that the gown her husband helped design was a little too much. Fox News has another quote from her Allure interview and she expressed some reservations about revealing his involvement.

“I’m going to say it. I shouldn’t say it but … The truth is … that dress was picked by Francois.”

So she’s letting people know it’s her husband’s fault she was so much on display. It’s ok to show some cleavage, but only love can convince her to reach a whole new level of distraction with her breasts.

I’m not sure she can blame François entirely for this dress – like you said, it’s not that different from her regular formal attire. When she was on “30 Rock” they had her bouncing around like you wouldn’t believe. They didn’t cast Salma Hayek, they just cast her breasts. It was ridiculous.

  2. pixiegirl says:

I don’t know. It doesn’t look that bad to me. Sure, I see some cleavage but somehow it still looks tasteful to me. And what a gorgeous dress, right?

  3. HEB says:

    She looks great!

  4. rbsesq says:

I don’t really see that it’s a big deal. I see plenty of celebrities who look like they are literally going to pop out of their dresses at any given moment. But Salma’s dress covers her, and it doesn’t appear that the girls are going to escape. Scarlett Johansson wears dresses that show off her very significant cleavage all the time and you don’t see headlines about it.

  5. Alexis says:

If you’ve got it flaunt it! She looks tasteful, pretty, and sultry. The same as she always looks. Her boobs certainly are a part of her pop culture relevance but, she’s a fine actor and humanitarian (spelled wrong?). I thought she was GREAT on 30rock.

  6. Bodhi says:

I think she looked amazing at the GGs. Whats all the fuss about?

  7. geronimo says:

She looked amazing and incredibly feminine. How is it over the top? (pardon the pun)

  8. Alexis says:

One more thougt on the subject, she’s dealing with post baby body, ya know. As a Mother I can tell you that if you don’t lift the girls up and secure them into place, they might just wander off and do their own thing. It could have been a consideration, just saying.

  9. NJMDPS says:

She looked great. No apologies necessary.

  10. iheartlasagne says:

Whatever, what a non-story. I think she is one of the sexiest stars at the moment, and I think her body is amazing! I love that she is voluptuous and curvy and I am obsessed with her breasts! I don’t think she looks tasteless at all. I also love the dress.

  11. Victoria says:

I like it! Girlfriend’s got some bodacious tatas!

  12. michellle says:

    She looked great, as always.

In the past she’s said she preferred low cut neck lines as the alternative made her look over weight.

Looks to me like she’s someone who knows her figure & what suits her.

  13. Ana says:

If I had boobies like that they would be pushed up to my chin. And my husband would never let me out of the house! Lol.
I don’t think it looks bad. I think Sarah Jessica Parker’s dress at the Oscars looked worse. At least Salma’s puppies can breathe.

  14. Jag says:

She looks gorgeous. What’s all the fuss about?

  15. MaiGirl says:

I agree, Ana. The dress is lovely and tasteful, and her boobs look comfortable, not punished like SJP’s did. And it’s true that big, swaddled boobs make one look heavy.

  16. manda says:

She looks amazing! I’m not sure why the header refers to this as “excessive cleavage”…

  17. Annie says:

    What’s the big deal? lol.

If I had a rack like that, you better believe I’d be putting those babies out on display all the time. 🙂

    She’s STUNNING.

    Plus, you know, post-baby breasts….

  18. biz says:

Bloody trollop… should be ashamed of herself!

Only kidding. I think she looks amazing and sexy. But then again, I am a Salma fan 😀

  19. Scorpiogal says:

She’s incredibly gorgeous! Women with large breasts have just as much of a right to show them off. I’ve seen much more revealing cuts on women with smaller chests.

  20. Miss C says:

Why is this even an issue?

But I’m not surprised because as a women with larger than average breasts I get horrible looks if I even so much as dare show some cleavage. Whereas women with smaller breasts can get away with it.

She looks gorgeous and I see absolutely nothing wrong with her dress.

  21. Miss C says:

*woman. Haha, sorry just woke up. 🙂

  22. caribassett says:

She looks great, she has a great set, no big deal. Frankly she looks much classier than so many of the ladies in Hollywood these days. I see no problem.

  23. raven says:

Let me add to the ocmments that she looks amazing. The issue is really the fitted bodice, but I think her husband did a great job.

  24. Baho says:

I’m glad most of the posters think she looks fab, because I do wonder what it is with this overall tit-phobia in “gimme implants!” North America? The woman is very buxom, what’s she supposed to do? Bind herself? Wear a wimple or a mu-mu everywhere?

It’s a lovely dress, not a thing inappropriate about it. It’s very sexy and very tasteful and for that reason I think the word ‘decolletage’ is more appropriate than cleavage.

  25. Mark says:

I’m sure it was just a symbolic tribute to the event in no way done to self promote.

  26. whatevs says:

I’d kill for boobs like that, but can’t help but think guys drooling and women glaring with envy (or awe) would make me terribly self concious.

Still, this is her usual choice of attire. Nothing “excessive” when it’s the norm. She always looks great and carries herself well, so what’s the big deal?

  27. Maritza says:

    I agree with Annie.

  28. Ana says:

Miss C- as a woman with absolutely no boobies to speak of (seriously I’m pretty sure I’m deformed or something!) Women with smaller breasts can get away with lower cut tops because looking like a fifteen year old boy doesn’t exactly make people feel uncomfortable or men feel tight in the pants. Ha!
I do think that women with bigger breast have a tendency to look heavier but Salma really balances it out especially considering she isn’t that tall. I would kill for normal sized breats! Even just a b cup! So you can imagine how jealous this woman makes me feel!

  29. AC says:

I’ve seen WAY more of her boobs than that. It doesn’t seem excessive. It looks great and she still looks extremely classy. The red dress she wore on one of the episodes of 30 rock… now THAT was excessive… but still so great. Its like she can do no wrong!

  30. mojoman says:

She is gorgeous and has curves in the right places. Oy, If my husband owns YSL, Gucci, Balenciaga..

  31. sissoucat says:

She looks very pretty and classy.

As for women with smaller breasts getting a free pass : ha ! Try to find a dress or a shirt showing some cleavage in my country, they are all made for C-cups. I end up with empty flaps on each side when I try them on.

  32. fabulous says:

God blaming her husband for the dress is SO boring. It completely smacks of a pr whitewash – furious backtracking.

People should stand by what they do/wear. It is the same style she always wears and besides SHE accenuated the whole chest area by wearing her hair up and out of the way – or does hubby do hair too?

  33. fabulous says:

BTW – I think she looks great. She should just stand up for herself. If some of those on the moral right are up in arms, she should just say…and god created woman. Right?

  34. K says:

Here’s a woman with natural, large breasts. Salma has always displayed her assets with class. They’re beautiful, and she shouldn’t cover them!
