Natalie Dormer: ‘women should have style, undermined by slight casualness’

Natalie Dormer

Natalie Dormer covers the April issue of Self magazine. She’s wearing a cut-out dress by Prabal Gurung and looks stunning. Self’s shoots are often a little more fitness-y, but Nat does plenty of talking about her exercise habits. She’s promoting Game of Thrones and talks about how she’s been typecast in fearless female roles. But she feels very good and knows there are much worse problems to have. No complaints here at all. Natalie knows that nearly every actor gets pinned into a box, and she’s happy to be working:

On being typecast: “It got to the point where if there was a manipulative femme fatale who was going to be seducing the leading mem, it was ‘Call Natalie Dormer!’ Every actor, wherever they are on the hierarchy, gets put in a box to a certain extent. And isn’t it wonderful when people like Matthew McConaughey can turn around and go: ‘You thought I was this, but look what I can do!’ You have to start challenging people’s perceptions of you, and the perceptions you have of yourself, really.”

On fashion: “I think women should have style, but it should be undermined by a slight casualness. Like they haven’t tried that hard, because the minute you’re self-conscious about it, it doesn’t really work anymore.'”

Running her first 26.2 at 33: “I look back on it now and think, F***ing hell, how did I do that? In Mockingjay – Part 2, I’m basically running around in heavy armor while carrying a semiautomatic rifle. I don’t know how I would have kept up with Liam Hemsworth or Sam Claflin if I hadn’t been in the best cardiovascular shape of my life. This amazing thing happens where people come out of the woodwork. Suddenly someone in the camera department is giving you tips on nutrition, or the catering guy is giving you recipes. And everyone on-set in the morning is, like, ‘How far did you run this weekend?’ The support was really wonderful.”

On cross training: “My yoga mat will always be in my luggage. Yoga is invaluable when you’re on long-haul flights a lot. But I do it for my mind as much as my body. Actually, that’s true of my relationship with all exercise. I’m open to new experiences. I just did aerial yoga for the first time, and there’s a kayak club that I’ve been meaning to try.”

I always enjoy reading Natalie’s thoughts on fitness because she works hard at it. Nat shall soon train for her second marathon in NYC. She’s correct about the strong support network amongst runners, but I’ve noticed it swings in both directions. You can’t talk about running in front of non-runners, or virtual tomatoes will be tossed. I no longer tweet about the sport for that very reason. Local running clubs are a nice refuge, and Nat is lucky to have worked with people who share that interest.

Here are photos of Nat at last week’s Dior and I film premiere in London. At least Dior is still doing coats well on the regular.

Photoshop strikes again. They erased the best part abut her: her crooked smirk.

    Sigh.

      OMG ! You’re so right!!

    • Mel M says:

First thing I noticed as well.

    • Esmom says:

That’s so obnxious and rude, for some Photoshop-wielding “artist” to determine what is and isn’t an acceptable feature. It’s not like erasing a blemish or something.

      • lunchcoma says:

It is obnoxious and rude, and it also makes pictures so boring. Why bother even putting real human women on covers if we’re going to manipulate them so they all look the same? Just throw up some realistic digital art if that’s the look that’s desired.

      • Esmom says:

So true. Some magazine covers these days look more like illustrations than photos anyway. I’m thinking of a recent Madonna one as a particularly awful example of Photoshop gone wild.

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I LOVE her smirk. Her and Margot Robie have really smug faces. Love it. I don’t know why.

  2. ell says:

she’s lovely and seem very articulate as well.

That Dior coat is amazing ! I’ve been a fan since her turn as Anne Boleyn in The Tudors and I’m glad she’s getting more coverage and recognition.

    • Pandy says:

I’m going to dream about that coat tonight.

    • Mean Hannah says:

Her Dior coat reminds me of my mother’s Dior coat, except hers was ivory and full length. When I was about 16, I asked her for the coat and cried when she told me that she gave it away when we immigrated to America 4 years prior. My mother has two daughters and she thought nothing of giving away all her custom-made and couture suits, dresses, shoes, and bags because she didn’t think she’d need them here and didn’t want to spend time and energy packing them for their long journey on a ship.

She always seems to give a pretty good interview – I get the feeling she’s got something going on upstairs and doesn’t just have to stick to soundbites.

That magazine cover is a horror, both because of the dress and the photoshop, but I lust after that red coat.

  5. Esmom says:

Style undermined by slight casualness — I think she speaks of effortless chic, kinda like Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. I haven’t seen enough of Dormer well enough to know if she has that elusive quality from what I can see she seems lovely, with a cool edge.

Running is my go-to sport but I haven’t competed in years so I pretty much keep to myself, no network of supporters but that’s fine with me. As long as I can keep myself injury free, I’m good.

  6. Micki says:

She can sell me anything apart from running and yoga.

  7. David says:

    Love her!

  8. Lenna says:

Personally Bedhead I miss your running tweets 🙂

    • Bedhead says:

Thanks. I try so hard to stay quiet over there! 😉

      • Nk868 says:

That stinks! Your twitter account is for your personal thoughts, you should talk about running as much as you want to! Don’t let the bastards get ya down 😉

  9. crazydaisy says:

Is it me, or is that cover so photo-shopped that Nat looks exactly like Kate Hudson? (At least the photoshopped version of Kate Hudson, lol.)

I really like Natalie Dormer, though. As an actress and a beauty. Can’t wait for new season of GOT to premiere!!!

  10. paranormalgirl says:

Yeah, I find I have running friends and non-running friends and never the twain shall meet.

  11. Lucy says:

So many posts about amazing and kickass women today, well done Celebitchy!!!

  12. INeedANap says:

I love that she’s actually athletic, as opposed to just working out to be skinny. HONK for Natalie Dormer!

  13. Lauren says:

I love Natalie! I think I loved her since I watched The Tudors. I have all the DVD book sets and she just captivated me as Anne Boleyn. She is probably my favourite AB. I think she does wonderfully on Game of Thrones as well and hope her career continues to prosper.

  14. LAK says:

    Love that coat.

  15. oneshot says:

I agree with her style philosophy, even the most avant-garde clothes wearers I’ve seen only look good in their clothes if they don’t appear to be thinking about what they look like all the time.

The late Isabella Blow was a good example, dressed in red lipstick, extravagant couture and crazy hats every day of her life but wore the hats so naturally they almost seemed like a part of her.

  16. karen says:

…I think she means style is underpinned by whatever…that Dior movie will be hard to find in my area…
