Dakota Fanning on Instagram: ‘I don’t want to live my life trying to get a photo’

Dakota Fanning

Dakota Fanning covers the May issue of Nylon magazine to promote two new films. She stars in Franny, which premiered at Tribeca this weekend, and a period drama called Effie Gray. We don’t really see Dakota other than in candid paparazzi photos as she shuffles back and forth to university. She’s finishing up her third year without incident, although she’s lucky enough to attend school “for my own interest” rather than for a career. Dakota plans to stick with acting, and she’s majoring in Women in Film at NYU’s Tisch school.

Dakota turned 21 years old in late February (Pisces!), and she’s handling it well. She tells Nylon that she does party a little. She just never does it where people will report her behavior. Dakota’s also fine with people still treating her like a child star. I left out the stuff she says about relocating from Georgia to LA as a child. Dakota ruffled some feathers last year by comparing LA to Africa; she mostly tells Nylon that her family never considered LA to be a permanent move. Her family kept her out of trouble, and Dakota attended high school like a normal kid. She stills sounds mostly unaffected. Some excerpts:

People mistake her for an Olsen: “There’s a man on my corner who thinks I’m an Olsen. He’ll yell, ‘Hey Olsen!’ at me. It’s really funny.”

On the “child star” label: “I’ve made my peace with the fact that there will be some people who, for the rest of my life, will believe I’m, like, nine years old. I have this joke that I’m literally going to be 35, married, and pregnant and people are still going to say, ‘Oh my god, you grew up so fast! I can’t believe it!’ And yeah, sometimes when you’re 21 years old and people are still saying that, you just want to rip your hair out. But I’m OK with it. I know who I am.”

On handing the pressure: “Sure, I handled myself the best that I could and was professional, but I was also a kid. I think that people who knew me then knew I was also exactly how kids are supposed to be. I’ve found that anybody who takes what they’re doing seriously or seems to be a caring person gets called an old soul. And it’s not a negative thing to say, but it’s also not 100 percent accurate. I might not be running around being insane, but I’m also a 21-year-old who likes to be silly. Just because I don’t flaunt those parts of my life doesn’t mean I don’t do some of that privately, you know what I mean?”

She’s majoring in Women in Film: “I think there aren’t a lot of movies that are made for women–they always want to insert something so the guys will go. A director that I worked with, Naomi Foner, once said, ‘Somebody decided a couple years ago that only 15-year-old boys go see movies.’ There aren’t a lot of stories told strictly from a woman’s perspective.”

She won’t do social media: “I feel like if I did it, I’d start to measure my experiences by how good of an Instagram it’s going to turn into. And I don’t want to be living my life trying to see it all in a square, trying to get a photo. You have to set the photo up, you have to take the photo, you have to edit the photo, pick the right filter, format it, caption it–like, too much! There are so many more things I could be doing!”

Dakota is one of the few stars her age that you won’t find on social media, which is nice. A little bit of mystery goes a long way, and she insisted a few years ago that she’ll never join Twitter. I think her thoughts on Instagram are probably the best criticism I’ve seen from a celebrity. She’s not talking down to people who take selfies. Dakota is simply pointing out how so much effort goes into creating the perfect Instagram photo. That takes up a lot of time! Like I’ve said before … trying to create the perfect life to show off on the internet can make you miss out on reality.

Here are some photos of Dakota at Tribeca. The white dress is Zac Posen and oh-so-structural. The darker dress is a blue suede Theory pinafore dress, which is very pretty.

Don’t kill me but I think being friends with Kstew helped her shake the old soul image and come across as just a normal young person. She has taken on many Coming of Age Indies that have slowly introduced her as a young adult to help people see her as no longer a child. My only small negative is I wish both Fanning young ladies would stop killing their hair with so much blonde bleach.

    • serena says:

+1 They were super blonde as children and want to keep that going I guess, but then I wonder how damaged their hair are. The little one, Elle, went brunette for a role awhile ago and was super pretty!

  2. gogo says:

Aww, she grew up fast. I feel so old now.

  3. CM says:

Thought she was astonishing in some of the films I saw her in as a child. Complete scene-stealer. And I like that she seems to seek out parts in small, interesting movies these days. So good luck to her. And kudos on navigating Hollywood as a child and not ending up a train-wreck!

    • HH says:

I think the fact that the majority of her newer roles are in smaller, indie films is one of the reasons people still think of her as a child star. Those are the ones that were major blockbusters and reached the widest audiences.

  4. INeedANap says:

I LOVE what that she’s going to college just to learn more, and I LOVE what she said about women in film. Although women are half the world we are still considered a niche market. We have money too!

    Rock on, Miss Fanning!

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree completely. It’s like a breath of fresh air. An actor who values education and is negotiating the pitfalls of Hollywood with intelligence and grace. I feel like turning a cartwheel.

    • Lucy2 says:

I was excited to read that too- I think she’s a good actress and it sounds like she will continue to do that, but I could also see her moving into a producing, directing, or studio running role, and I think that would be a good thing. She seems smart and very grounded, and very aware.

    • jammypants says:

I love that she seems very grounded.

  5. Ari says:

Love how she is growing up and she needs to hire the stylist who did that mag shoot for all her clothing/hair and makeup choices lol

  6. BendyWindy says:

I think she looks unrecognizable in that magazine spread.

  7. daisyfly says:

    The antithesis of a Jenner/Kardashian/Lohan/Bieber.

Clone her and her parents, please.

  8. paola says:

Did you hear that Kardashian family?

    • Hannah says:

Nope, too busy putting on makeup and making duck face and photoshopping themselves skinnier.

  9. Isa says:

She looks like the chick from OITNB in the last photo.

I don’t put much thought into my Instagram. Maybe I’m doing things wrong but most of the time I don’t even use filters. If I do it takes 15 seconds to flip through a choose one. I liked that there wasn’t the pressure to buy stuff from mlm schemes like Facebook. However, I’ve noticed it more and more on there.

I am amazed that all throughout high school no one sold her out. I live in a small town where everyone gossips about each other for free, including grown adults. Add in making money off a photo and my mind is blown she escaped unscathed. Her fame, good looks and popularity would have made her a big target for jealouz h8terz. I also remember being betrayed by “friends.” Gosh, I was so immature compared to her at that age.

    • paola says:

That chick from OITMB looks a lot like katy perry too.. and Amber VAlletta. It boggles my mind how much they aall look alike!

      • Isa says:

I think I’ve spent this entire time thinking she was the same person as Amber Valletta.

  10. LAK says:

I love the silver shoes she’s wearing with the blue suede dress.

  11. Loulou says:

I like what she says about Instagram. I feel like every time I go out with friends, even just to dinner, there’s such a focus on getting the perfect Insta shot. Nothing is really candid at this point, just this unspoken competition to get the perfect picture.

  12. Greek chic says:

The antithesis of Lindsay Lohan. I like that she wants to be educated and is not just a party girl like other child stars. She seems mature.

Apart from that she’s really talanted. People say how Lindsay wasted her talent but I don’t see it. She starred in easy watch teen movies, nothing special. She was cute, but talented no. Dakota is a good actress IMO.

  13. Jojar Pinks says:

    love her

  14. Pumpkin Pie says:

    That last pic is exquisite.

  15. serena says:

I really like the Fanning sisters, they are grounded and talented. Minor complaint: she should hire a better stylist /make-up person.

  16. Sofia says:

“so much effort goes into creating the perfect Instagram photo.”

I understand what she is saying, she is focusing of how social media becomes a place of performance from everybody all the time. BUT, like everything it depends of how people use it. It’s very easy to bash social media nowadays without considering the whole picture (pun intended ^_^).
