Emma Stone carried a bag with Andrew Garfield’s name: what does it all mean?

Here are some photos of Emma Stone out and about in LA yesterday. Everyone is talking about these photos… which is what Emma wants. That’s why she’s posing for photos this way, why she’s positioned that one bag a certain way. As you can see, the brown bag has “ANDREW GARFIELD” written in block-letters at the top. Emma wants you to see that. She wants us to speculate. Why?

Well, at the beginning of April, Star Magazine got the ball rolling on the breakup rumors. Star claimed that Andrew and Emma were on a break and it might be temporary. It took a week before other outlets – People, E! News, Us Weekly – followed suit. The explanations given ranged from “they grew apart” to “he was working too much” to “he’s really intense and in a dark place” to “he wasn’t a good boyfriend lately.” It did seem like there was a wink-nudge confirmation, specifically from Emma’s camp, blaming Andrew for the breakup. We also know that Emma left NYC (temporarily?) and has been holed up in LA for a while.

So does the bag with Andrew’s name mean that Emma and Andrew are fine and there’s nothing to see? Does it mean they did break up but have now reconciled? Or does it mean that Emma put all of Andrew’s crap into a paper bag and she’s dropping it off with one of bros because she’s totally done with him? I have no idea.

Incidentally, there was some confusion last week with the Star Magazine story about Andrew allegedly cheating on Emma. Pajiba linked to our story and did their own write-up, only Pajiba commenters claimed that the whole thing was based on an OK! Magazine story. It was not. The original source was Star Magazine’s print edition (I transcribed the story myself). If the original source is OK! Magazine, I will say so, usually adding a huge caveat of “this is from OK! Mag so it’s probably crap.” Star Magazine was actually the first to report Emma and Andrew’s breakup, and they’re the first to say Andrew cheated, which may or may not be crap, we simply don’t know. But I gave Star’s report last week some extra weight because they were the first to report the breakup.

And here’s the newly released trailer for Irrational Man, Woody Allen’s new film starring Emma and Joaquin Phoenix. Yeah… I have a B.A. in Philosophy, so I surprisingly related to this. Joaquin is playing a version of like ten different guys in my major.

    Get rid of the baggage!

    (literally and figuratively)

ETA: where’s my backup officer, Detective Kitten, where are you?

  2. Shambles says:

“I threw your sh*t into a bag and pushed it down the stairs… I. DONT. CARE. I LOVE IT!” *flips hair*

  3. gilmore says:

I don’t think they ever really broke up honestly? They share the same stylist and she has a bunch of premiers and events to attend, so he’s probably going to them too. Why pick up stuff for someone who supposedly cheated on you/has been ignoring you for a role? I think this was her silent way of saying FU we’re still together since she’s not going to put our a statement or issue a denial via twitter. He seems like a decent lad not sure why everyone seems to think the worst of him.

    • Caitlin Bruce says:

Exactly. Star is not a realiable source who saw that Andrew was away in Taiwan so started drama with a drama free couple. Every outlet is backtracking now it’s quite hilarious.

    • KellyBee says:

They made a statement to People magazine that they are taking a break from their relationship so that part is true.

Now what Star and OK printed I believe is BS.

      • gilmore says:

Except their people didn’t put out a statement at all, it was just one of those “sources confirm” things. Usually you’ll get a yes we can confirm so and so are taking a break, we ask for privacy, yadda yadda, but no one’s camp said that.

      • qwerty says:

I’d agree except we’re talking about People. People is the most celeb-friendly magazine out there, they don’t publish anything without consulting a publicist first. So their people confirmed it, just off-record.

  4. MEGAN says:

    She needs a good tan.

    • LaurenLauren says:

Uhh, no she doesn’t?! Would you tell a darker skinned person to stay out of the sun or bleach her skin? I don’t think so. ALL skin colors are fine the way they are.
I in fact think her skin tone is beautiful and very ‘pure’ looking, much better than those who are naturally pale and who want to tan and in return get nice ol’ sun damage.

      • MEGAN says:

        Pure looking. Lmaooo.

      • LaurenLauren says:

What’s your problem with that phrase? Pure as in: not riddled by sun damage, freckles and wrinkles like some tanned people.

      • jammypants says:

I think you mean “natural” looking. I initally read “pure” as “this skin color is better than dark” 😛 But I get what you mean.

      • Anna says:

“Pure looking” lmaooooo omg bye. For someone who’s allll about loving skin colour that’s quite the opposite.

Anyway the Woody Allen film looks like a stereotypical creepy Woody Allen film and I side eye Emma for always wanting to work with him.

      • Beth says:

Thank-you! I can’t tan and comments like these are seriously hurtful.

    • Shambles says:

I’m super pale, and as I’ve gotten older, I’ve come to love my fair skin. I’ve also come to know that it’s better for me to be pale with a good complexion than to risk damaging my skin trying to get a tan. Some people are just meant to be fair, as some people are meant to be darker, and that’s ok ☺️

      • MEGAN says:

Haha I know. It’s just weird to see pale Californians.

      • Pompasaurus says:

Megan, there are more of us than you know… We’re not all stereotypical blonde, tan surfers. I’m naturally very fair, and avoid the sun as much as I can. As a result, every one thinks I’m 10 years younger than I am.

    • Franca says:

Her skin colour is amazing, she doesn’t need a tan.

    • Samtha says:

      Her skin is gorgeous.

    • satsuki says:

I get that comment everyday from a friend…ughhh!

  5. Tiffany says:

That she has two films coming out that look like stinkers and this will make people look the other way. Saying plenty while saying nothing.

    • Jegede says:

LMAO! Its odd how Emma Stone and Kristen Stewart get away with the pap games they play.

    • Charlie says:

I love Emma, but this is just stupid.

      • Sofia says:

I actually just lost some respect for her. One thing is to engage with the paps while showing a card with website of an organization they want to support, other is knowing the paps are out there and feeding them with this sort of gimmicks. I just cannot believe it was an accident.

      • mia girl says:

        Yes, it’s pretty stupid.

  6. Jay says:

My first thought was she was picking something up for him…

    • Shawna says:

She is picking something up for him. The rest of the set of photos aren’t posted, but in them you can see her coming out of her stylist’s office. Her stylist, Petra Flannery (who also styles Andrew) is carrying a bunch of bags and boxes with Emma’s name on it. She has some interviews & junkets & red carpets coming up so I think she’s just getting ready. If Star & OK magazine were right about the cheating, I doubt she’s be doing Garfield a favor and picking up his stuff too

  7. Jegede says:

It could mean US Weekly continues its losing streak of ‘exclusive’ stories.

  8. Catelina says:

I think they’re probably on a break right now but are keeping the door open to getting back together under better circumstances and are staying amicable for the moment.

    • Dara says:

I think the media overreacted, E!Online (which is way better than US Weekly) even said Emma & Andrew were still on good terms and they weren’t even calling it “a break” per se. They were just physically separated by distance. It was the media that had to label it as something and that’s when everybody jumped on the band wagon and started using the term “on a break!” in every story and it just snowballed.

  9. Charlie says:

I hated philosophy in high scool, and now that I’m in college I find most philosophy majors annoying ( sorry). But then again, I’m a science major, maybe that’s got something to do with it.

  10. Shawna says:

But the full, longer story was from OK! Magazine. Star Magazine obviously used the same source b/c they had the EXACT same wording & passages but Star took out the crazier parts that OK! kept in to make the story more believable. Anyways, they’re both trash. Star may have started the ball rolling but it was clear that the next source they used a couple weeks later was a different one b/c the tone & language was totally different and sounded quite fake. The whole “he said” and then “she said” and “she felt” and then “he felt”, those are the fakest articles.

  11. Caitlin Bruce says:

Emma wanted the paps to see tha bag for a reason to stop the rumours. If they were on a break she would have turned the bag the other way around to stop people speculating and taking about it. Every outlet is now backtracking which confirms that there really wasn’t any solid sources to begin with.

  12. roxy750 says:

This looks like a GREAT movie!

  13. Sos101 says:

    She has great penmanship.

  14. Mrs. Darcy says:

Wow, props to Kaiser, I found Intro to Philosophy mind boggling – too much for my little English major’s brain – f’ing Kant! I can’t believe Parker Posey has never done a Woody Allen film, seems like a perfect fit.

The Garfield brown bag is weird. Even if it’s just a joke, it does seem like her way of sending him a signal because that was their shtick, pranking the paps. I tend to think he probably did cheat, so she might be pissed but maybe leaving the door open. Kind of reminds me of when J.Law and whatshisname split briefly, I can see these two ending up back together.

  15. Ceree says:

Omg this couldn’t be a more obvious PR couple, from beginning to end. Who the hell puts the WHOLE name of a person on a bag and positions it like that for the paps? Someone doing it for PR because that’s what their relationship was. Her publicist probably had the brilliant idea of her walking around with this bag and told her to carry it when she knows there will b paps waiting for her.
