Lupita Nyong’o wears green Gucci for Cannes Opening Night: amazing or blah?

FFN_Cannes_OpeningRC_CHP_051315_51739049

The Cannes Film Festival had its opening night premiere last night and so many fashion girls walked the carpet! Some were there – like Natalie Portman – because they have films which will be shown in or out of competition. Some were there – like Lupita Nyong’o – because they have high-profile beauty contracts and “walking the Cannes red carpet” is one of the ways they fulfill their contracts.

So, let’s talk fashion. Lupita went bold with this bright green Gucci with a plunging V-neck, floral appliques, and a full skirt. On anyone else, I might think this was sort of tacky and costumey. On Lupita, it’s sort of perfect. It’s perfect for Cannes too, because you can veer into that kind of tacky, showgirl-style and it really works at Cannes.

If I have one complaint about Naomi Watts’ style, it’s that she relies too heavily on neutrals and pale colors when she should really go bolder. I don’t really have a problem with this feathered, beaded grey Elie Saab though – it’s dark enough where she doesn’t look washed out. And I love that big necklace. Bring on the jewelry p0rn!

Julianne Moore in Armani Privé. I feel like the feathers are close to overwhelming her, but… it’s not a terrible look for her. I prefer her in cleaner, sleeker looks, but she’s having fun and why not? I like the sparkle of green with her emerald earrings too.

And finally, Bar Refaeli with Fawaz Gruosi. Gruosi is De Grisogono Jewelry, so he probably hired Bar to wear the jewelry on the red carpet.

  1. Kip says:

That contrasty smoky eye make up on Julianne Moore is painful to look at…is that a thing this season? Haven’t seen anyone it looks good on yet.

    • InvaderTak says:

What’s the difference between contrast smokey eye and regular smokey eye? Makeup illiterate over here.

      • Kip says:

Maybe it’s the lack of blending between the darkest eye shadow colour and the rest of the face? Or the lack of middle-toned colour between the darkest one and the highlighter? Last time I tried to do a smokey eye was 1999. Or maybe 2002, so what do I know. Look, I don’t even know if it’s “smoky” or “smokey” 😉

      • InvaderTak says:

Thanks a lot for pointing out the spelling thing, I was compelled to research that. Apparently, “smokey” is the old fashioned spelling of “smoky” when the word is used as an adjective. Smokey can be a proper name though, and spelled with the e (i.e. Smokey Robinson). When you search for the makeup look though, it appears to universally be spelled with the e. (If you search “smoky eyes” google will correct it to “smokey eyes”.) So there you go. Looks like the makeup world took the old school spelling of the adjective smoky and made it into a thing.

      • Kip says:

@invadertak, etymological respect! If you think “smokey eyes” long enough, you lose the make up meaning and get one of two possible combinatory ones

    • Hudson Girl says:

Also, Lupita’s lip color is off- not quite right for her or that dress so, it’s confusing me.

    • Kiddo says:

I think whoever did it applied it inconsistently. It makes her eyes look lopsided. That said, as much as I don’t like the top, this is a better cut for her figure than we’ve seen.

I like Lupita, but that salmon-colored appliqué, coupled with the hot pink lipstick and green hue of the dress, is just hitting all the notes for me. It’s like eating ice cream with kale.

    • LVN says:

      They all look stunning, wow.
      Gorgeous woman.

  2. Karen says:

I’m so tired of dresses cut to the navel. But at least these dresses had some drama!!!! (Excluding Bars snooze fest which can join Portmans).

This is Cannes! Nothing is too outrageous. More diamonds! More feathers! More beading!

    • lkaye says:

Agreed! Lupita is awesome, but she should not wear a dress cut to the navel. It does not look good on her.

      • OriginalTessa says:

I agree. She has a lovely figure, but this dress just doesn’t highlight it.

      • sills says:

I have a somewhat flat, bony chest like her, and I try to cover it cuz I think it makes me look a bit boyish. Looking your best is about flaunting your assets, and Lupita has almost only assets–but I think that deep V-cut takes away from the look on her.

      • taxi says:

Lupita doesn’t have a pretty sternum. She’s got a weird scar (or zit cluster) that really should be concealed by fabric. idon’t know why she keeps doing the waist-slit tops. She’s flat chested & narrow shouldered. Her bottom half is proportionately very big by comparison.
Higher necklines with fitted waists & flared skirts would balance her out better. Kristin Davis is built the same way – small top, big bottom & full legs.

      • LVN says:

Yes Lupita is stunning, absolutely but whoever keeps suggesting these low cut v open chest Dresses needs to stop it. Yes she still looks stunning, but the V a few inches higher would look much better. I thought it looked bad at the Academy awards too, even though she looked stunning and the dress was gorgeous. Her face is beyond gorgeous so she grows in whatever she wears.

    • j.eyre says:

I share your boredom of cut-down-to-there necklines but I am willing to give Naomi’s a pass because that necklace is so amazing and that neckline is showcasing it beautifully.

    • Mary-Alice says:

I’m utterly bored with these dresses too. On top of that, I don’t feel Lupita’s last few fashion choices at all and this dress is not for her body and looks not so well on her, to put it mildly.

    • Anne tommy says:

I like all of them. I get a bit tired of suggestions that a person or a Look is boring or not exciting enough. Not everyone Wants to be edgy. Looking lovely is good enough.

      • LVN says:

I love Lupita’s dresses but even the ACADEMY Award dress low V cut on her, I wasn’t wild about. I just think the low V cuts look Odd on her chest ,but that said, she still carries the look off, she’s stunning, but the low V’s are not my favorite look on her.

    • Tessy says:

Me too, I’ve never liked the low plunging necklines. So try hard and unflattering to everyone.

    • ava7 says:

Yeah, agreed. But it kind of annoyed me that she kept pulling out the skirt and making it flow up and down like that. If you see a video rather than the stills you’ll see she’s constantly manipulating the dress. I’m just not sure you should have to do that much work with the dress you wear.

  3. Tracy says:

I hate Lupito’s dress…hospital green, doofy flowers, etc. but love her so much I don’t care what she wears. She’s just an intelligent, beautifully spoken role model and I’ll take her anyway I can get her.

But…Julianne! Honey, you’re just stunning, but why, why, why do you tolerate walking around with GREY, DINGEY TEETH?! You’ve had dirty looking teeth for decades….fix it, girl!

    • MunchmaQuchi says:

I have to respectfully disagree about Julianne’s teeth. I think they only look “dingy” because everyone else in Hollywood has bleached their teeth to a level of such unnatural whiteness that that normal teeth look discolored next to them. If you saw her in person, you probably wouldn’t think they looked bad at all.

      • Sullivan says:

People have gotten so used to seeing unnatural blue-white teeth that normal, healthy teeth look out of place.

      • Tessy says:

        Her teeth look fine.
I noticed that half the people on Survivor had startling white teeth this time too. I wonder if they are paying for reality actors to whiten their teeth or if they are doing it on their own hook. I’ve heard that the process can cause lots of problems. Tooth pain and gum lesions that make it difficult to eat.
I’ll keep my natural pearly whites thank you very much.

      • ava7 says:

Yeah and those too big, too white veneers they all have.

    • Pandy says:

I thought Lupita’s dress was too similar to her Oscar dress – strong color, floaty, pleated chiffon. And the floral appliques are a bit goofy.

I noticed Julianne’s teeth as well …. I think she’s gorgeous, but I noticed her teeth looked dingy – maybe from the black dress??

  4. Shambles says:

    Lupita’s look is… 70’s disco mermaid goddess. J’adore.

    • Kitten says:

Thank god I’m not the only one. It’s effin amazing and that mint color is SO bomb on her.
It’s so 70s in the most awesome way. Sigh.

    • Shambles says:

You are not alone, Kittensauce. I’m picturing her with a huge silver microphone, waving all that fabric everywhere, singing, “Let’s dance… The last dance.. To-niiiigh-hiiiiiight….”

    • Marie-France says:

I also love it. I usually like her dresses, she wears a lot of Gianbattista Valli and looks georgeous! Seldom a fan Lupitas makeup though. I really like Julianne Moore here, sometimes she dresses too plain but this is lovely.

  5. Guesto says:

Lupita is just so luminous, so dewy fresh, so gorgeous here. Saw the dress earlier and it’s even more swirlingly stunning in motion.

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

In motion, her dress looks better but her makeup and her hair doesn’t work

  6. jen2 says:

I am not a fan of feathers. Moore’s eye make-up makes it seem like she can’t open her eyes fully and she is sleepy. I like the necklace on Watts, but it gets kind of lost since it is the same color as the dress. Lupita–no words. She also looks like she is having a blast and her jewelry is lovely. But they all get extra points for not parading their naked butts.

    • Kitten says:

I know. What is with all the feathers??

    • belle de jour says:

Combined with the sleepy eyes, she almost looks like some Norma Desmond character who quickly wrapped an old-school bed jacket around her tragically fancy nightgown.

  7. Grace says:

    All these ladies look fabulous.

  8. InvaderTak says:

If he hired Bar to wear his jewelry on the red carpet, she needs more of it.

Really want to love lupitas dress, but the details kill it for me. My grandma’s spring door wreath has no business around her neck, and the neckline needs to be higher.

Watts’ is meh. The necklace is too much. Julianne looks like well, Julianne. Need a to rethink the eye makeup.

    • FLORC says:

Right!! I had to zoom in thinking “what jewelry?”

Lupita lovves a plunging neckline. It’s nice here and there, but not often.
Moore needs to rethink a lot of makeup. By all accounts great person and fantastic actress, but often wears makeup that ages her terribly.

    • InvaderTak says:

Well looks like De Grisigono dressed a lot of the ladies in his jewelry. There’s a whole slide show in his official website. Portman and Kloss included. The pieces look much better up close.

    • Mary-Alice says:

I have a similar wreath! LOL But that’s exactly what the dress detail reminds of, thank you.

  9. Size Does Matter says:

I would LOVE Lupita’s dress – particularly on her – without the floral embellishment or sleeves. Naomi looks amazing.

  10. Lilacflowers says:

What a gorgeous bathrobe Lupita is wearing!

    • j.eyre says:

Okay, as a bathrobe it would be fabulous – by the pool, over a dynamite one piece, banded-back suit? With an oversized brimmed hat? Kitten heels? Glass of champagne? Pool boy? Now you are talking.

  11. tracking says:

Normally I love every single thing Lupita wears, but I’m meh on this one. Had it been sleeveless, I think I would have liked it. Watts looks divine and Moore very pretty.

  12. Naddie says:

Lupita’s dress is not beautiful, but it looks good on her, except from the shoulder’s part. Bar Rafaeli is the best looking, somehow I think her simple, plain dress puts her beauty in evidence.

  13. Allie says:

I think bright colors look like this green look good on Lupita, however I feel like she gets a pass on a lot of her dresses. She doesn’t have good style but because it’s her, people go nuts. She’s defintely beautiful, but she needs a new stylist, stat.

  14. mia girl says:

Naomi looks flawless. Love love love

  15. lisa2 says:

I guess the twirl is Lupita’s thing.. I like the color.. wish it was a bit deeper; but the dress itself is meh to me. Not very memorable.. except for the way it flows. Because unless she is showing the layers of the dress it is a bit boring. I don’t like the embellishment that much. I really love Julianne’s dress. When I saw it I thought of another actress that it would work well on too. Kind of a dress that a lot of women could wear.

  16. ToodySezHey says:

What peacock foolishment is Julianne wearing? Did she still that dress from Madame? (Google it) . No…just no.

The only thing worse is Naomi Watts’ busted variation on the same theme. Did she skin Snuffalufagus for that train/dress?

    Nawl!!!

As alwaya, Lupita stays slaying. Lupita and Fan Bingbing making green the IT color.

  17. Lucy2 says:

I don’t actually like Lupita’s dress but at the same time I think it totally works on her.
Naomi’s is pretty and I like Julianne’s too, even though that feathery look is not my favorite.
Bar’s is great but too boring for this event.

  18. Elizabeth says:

WOW Naomi Watts looks amazing! She is one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. I can’t believe she’s never gotten a Vogue cover.

    • EN says:

I agree. I love Naomi as well. And she manages to juggle it all – family and a high profile career and appears humble doing it all.

  19. Carmen says:

Feathers belong on birds, not on dresses.

  20. Renee28 says:

Lupita’s dress looks dated and matronly. It’s not cute.

    • Franca says:

It’s horrible. It’s probably the ugliest dress she’s ever worn. Her chest doesn’t look flattering in a dress cut that deep, her hair isn’t good and good God woman, stop with the twirling, you’re not 12.

    • FLORC says:

It’s not cute. Not even on her. She’s cute, but still can’t save this dress. Though, she’s beloved here. Maybe why we’re still looking the other way on her lunches and association with Terry and Leto as well as their circles?

  21. Magpie says:

Correct me if i’m wrong but has Lupita gotten any roles with the exception of her cgi role in Star Wars? Hollywood doesn’t know what to do with her.

    • FLORC says:

She has 4 projects coming up according to IMDB.
1 Star Wars. Another Raksha (voice work) in the Jungle Book.
And the other 2 are films with 1 listing her role and the other just listing the title, but not her role.

That Oscar so early on might have doomed her. She’s a good actress that was praised for her 1st role. Roles around that haven’t lived upto Oscar award winning hype and that’s where she’s at. Or maybe she just doesn’t want to work right now? Just walk carpets for contracts.
I remember reading after her Oscar Dress was found to be fake pearls she was asked to lay low. To not do that would draw attention to the fake dress and the designers avoided that to the point they wouldn’t even press charges for theft.

    • A says:

Not sure why my comment didn’t get through? Anyway…all I said was it’s hard for black actresses in Hollywood and they (usually) only get certain stereotypical roles.

This was my comment: There are usually 3 or 4 roles for black women in Hollywood.
Mammy, Jezebel, and Sapphire and I guess we can add some sort of combination as well, like good looking misstress or asexual best friend or the bisexual tough girl for the younger black actresses. I guess you can sum them all up as: Aggressive. If it’s not physically aggressive, it’s sexually aggressive and/or passive aggressive in some way.
With someone like Lupita it’s hard to put her in any stereotypical black female role, it just doesn’t work because she’s bascially the anti stereotype in so many ways.
If someone photoshopped her white, white skin, blue eyes and blond hair she would be called “angelic” because of her petite features.
Hollywood is invested in keeping these very harmful stereotypes alive.
They don’t actually want the Lupita’s…I am very curious to see what will happen to her, one thing black women have to their advantage is their youthful looks (as long as they keep their weight in check) so she has time in her favor.

  22. ToodySezHey says:

    I agree Magpie.

If I were her I’d aim for a big franchise too, or something on HBO. Maybe some small indie roles.

  23. Shelley says:

I find it interesting that noone here likes Lupita’s dress. I absolutely love it. The images of her twirling in her dress on the red carpet were all the rage on Twitter last night. One of the joys of being her complexion is one can pull of amazing colours like this dress.
I also like Naomi Watts in this dress. She usually doesnt stand out to me on the red carpet.
I hate to say it but Julianne Moore dresses like an old woman. I have been making too many excuses for her in the past but I am starting to see that she is beyond redemption. Luckily for her she is Julianne Moore.
As for Bar, beautiful dress. I see myself in it. A bit underwhelming for Cannes tho. And how forgettable is she? I never remember her face. It’s like I’m seeing her for the first time each time.

  24. Lara K says:

love Lupita but the dress is a 70s cheap robe.

  25. Blue says:

Lupita is beautiful but I hate the color of the dress and the flowers around the shoulders. Julieann looks meh in that black dress, Naomi’s grey feather dress is stunning she’s one of the best dressed.

  26. EN says:

Lupita looks blah, she tries to hard lately. I feel like she’s become more of a model / motivational speaker than an actress.

  27. TheOtherMaria says:

I like the dresses minus Moore’s, hate Lupita’s lipstick and Julianne’s shadow.

  28. Vava says:

Lupita needs to avoid low cut dresses.

    • FLORC says:

      Vava
I don’t care for the look either. Very few can pull it off.
Her Oscar dress I wish had a slightly higher neckline. The plunge seemed weird then too.

    • FingerBinger says:

I agree. Plus it looks like she has a scar going down her chest

    • Franca says:

Nobody’s chest looks falttering in a dress cut that deep.

      • Mary-Alice says:

I beg to disagree. I’ve seen plenty of women showing some envious perky cleavage in such a plunge. Lupita simply doesn’t have what to show and this style is not for everyone, me included.

      • kennedy says:

Blake Lively’s (fake) boobs always look great in a plunge. She has very perky (fake) boobs and a plunge accentuates them – sometimes tastefully!

    • kennedy says:

Yeah – this is a case of having a very bony, flat chest. She always wears these kinds of dresses too. Not flattering.

    • LVN says:

Yes I love her, she’s beautiful, but I just don’t like the low V on her. Her chest bone looks just Odd they way those low V’s fall on her, but the dressene and stunning and she is still absolutely Beautiful beyond,

  29. Norman Bates' Mother says:

I love Naomi’s dress. The top part fits her like a glove and the styling is very pretty. Lupita looks good but that dress would look tragic on basically anyone else. On the other hand – I love this shade of lipstick on some women but it doesn’t look good on her.

  30. judyjudyjudy says:

OMG! I love every single thing about Julianne Moore’s look. Everything. Cannot understand ANY of the slams here. She looks like she is glowing from head to foot. Best EVA for her.

Everybody else looks nice, too. Not incredible, but nice.

  31. DavidBowie says:

    I love Bar’s dress. Wow.

  32. Cynthia says:

I think Lupita looks stunning. I love the color of the dress and how they styled her hair.
I also really like Bar Rafaeli’s dress.
Off topic I missed Lupita but I wish she was at the festival to promote something; I know she is working on Queen of Katwe and Americanah (I look soo forward to it) but still I wish she had more projects lined up. I think that she faces the same struggles of other Black actresses in Hollywood + she’s pressured to find very good roles because she has already an Oscar. Everybody wants to see what she’s doing next and I bet that even after the Oscar she was proposed a lot of stereotypical or non dimensional roles. If you look at other Black actresses who are at the peak of their careers and very in-demand now as Viola, Kerry and Taraj, they all had to wait and go through ups and downs to find very good material. They were talented but still had time to grow and make mistakes. I think Lupita kind of peaked early and now it’s difficult to find substantial and worthy material. Anyway I’m glad that she’s brave enough to also create work by herself as she did by buying the rights and co-producing Americanah.

  33. Tig says:

Love Lupita’s and Naomi’s gowns-and more jewels Pls!!’ J Moore-love the dress- hate the makeup. Wish she’d experiment with some other gems other than emeralds-I should be so lucky😃

  34. Ms. Lib says:

    Lupita Nyong’o is freaking gorgeous!

  35. bondbabe says:

Julianne’s dress needs to either have a better lining or she needs to ditch the Spanx–it looks like she’s wearing biking shorts.

  36. Jag says:

I think Lupita looks pretty enough, but wish the dress were an emerald green instead. The flowers on the shoulder could be removed, and her lip color is just off.

The rest of the ladies look great!

  37. boredblond says:

I love green, it’s my favorite color..but not this green. Got that fake Easter basket grass feel.

  38. Keeks says:

Amazing. She looks gorgeous. As does Naomi Watts. It’s Cannes, play with the colour

  39. Layday says:

I like the color, and embellishments on Lupita’s dress, particularly against her skin tone. I just hate that the neckline is so low cut. Lupita is gorgeous but a dress that spotlights her chest does her no favors. Not saying this to be mean because I myself am a part of the itty bitty titty comittee (36A cup) and I wouldn’t wear a dress like that cause being so lowcut it wouldn’t flatter my chest. The color and design of the dress were dramatic enough that it didn’t have to be so low cut.

  40. serena says:

I love Naomi Watts’s dress and I kind of like Julianne More’s too (gasp!)!

  41. ISee says:

Love that Lupita is a proud member of the Iitty Bitty Titty crew. We get a lot of hate but she really does look better then 99% of the girls on the red carpet.

  42. Deb says:

Every time I see Lupita’s pictures at events she manages to look even more beautiful than the last time she was photographed. She is truly the most stunning woman I have ever seen, especially in these photos.
Is it wrong I wish she would meet my son, fall madly in love, and give me the most gorgeous grandchildren on the planet!?? lol 😛

  43. Vickyt says:

Great color on Lupita, but the dress is terrible. I prefer her in the Calvin Klein column dresses than the cut to the navel gowns she’s been wearing lately.
