Doutzen Kroes in Maison Margiela at Cannes amfAR gala: glam sack realness?

wenn22517759

We’re breaking up the Cannes amfAR gala photos into several different posts, just FYI. The amfAR gala is always one of the biggest – if not THE biggest – events of the Cannes Film Festival. This year’s gala was very, very model-heavy. So let’s start with my favorite model (because I learned, on the job, that I’m really into Dutch women) Doutzen Kroes. Doutzen wore this Maison Margiela gown which… is not my jam. First off, this was designed by John Galliano and I still have issues, despite his reemergence as a fashion force. Second of all, it makes her look pregnant, and by that I mean it’s a shapeless, bell-like sack dress. Angelina Jolie would love it. I will give Doutzen this: the face is FLAWLESS.

Lara Stone in Saint Laurent… since I’m into Dutch women, I like Lara. But I’m worried about her. Her marriage fell apart and her appearances at Cannes have not been great. Her hair is too white-blonde, the gowns don’t fit and she just doesn’t seem like she’s feeling great.

Jourdan Dunn in Vera Wang. I really like the color and I appreciate that it’s not satin. Beyond that, I’m ambivalent.

Sienna Miller in Ralph Lauren. She’s worn at least two versions of this dress in Cannes this week. Her stylist used to do a much better job.

Barbara Palvin in another look that is too mature – this is La Perla Atelier. I complained about her Versace look yesterday – it was something I could have seen on Jane Fonda. This is another one that makes her look much older.

Karlie Kloss in Tom Ford. I’m impressed that it’s Tom Ford, but beyond the label, it’s kind of a boring dress. Ford’s doing a lot of built-in chokers and it’s not my style.

Paris Hilton is still around, shockingly. This gown actually wasn’t the worst thing on the carpet.

Madalina Ghenea was there. I’m starting to wonder how many of Michael Fassbender’s ex-lovers are wandering around Cannes this week. Perhaps that’s why he’s been hiding in his hotel for days.

Okay, isn’t Cannes a film festival? Why does the guest list seem to be so model heavy?

    • Easi says:

      Cough cough, yachts.

      • Jegede says:

        @Easi – Ha Ha

But Cannes is HUGE exposure for them.

And a chance for the L’Oreal girls, like Karlie and Barbara (who are both no longer with VS) to hustle for a major brand.

      • MelissaManifesto says:

        Cough cough…sponsors…cough cough

      • Easi says:

Aholes like me just love to bring up yachts and I know that’s not all there is. But it’s there.

    • QQ says:

*cough Cough* DiCaprio Model Shopping Club

*cough cough** and lots of escorts say two weeks in Cannes set them up for the rest of the year soo….

    • qwerty says:

Loreal always sends its models to Cannes.

  2. Sugar says:

That’s a whole lot of ugly up there disguised as fashion.

  3. Alecsma says:

The hem on Karlie’s gown looks poorly finished. You’d expect better of a designer dress.

  4. Josephine says:

I actually love Doutzen’s dress (although I have no idea who she is). I think it hangs beautifully and her hair and make-up are effortless. She looks classy and like she belongs at Cannes. Most of the others look like they try too hard or like they bought it at the mall.

    • Kitten says:

Agreed. Good Lord she is gorgeous. It almost doesn’t matter what she wears with a face like that.

    • Franca says:

I love the dress, but Doutzen is so boring. No charisma at all.
Karlie Kloss maybe isn’t that pretty but I’d rather look at her pictures than Doutzen’s. Even Cara D is more interesting.

Barbara Palvin is also stunning, she looks a bit like Natalia Vodianova.

    • Linn says:

I love Doutzens dress as well. Imho it’s a perfect example that a dress doesn’t need to be super form-fitted to look great.

Barbara Palvin on the other hand is the perfect example that too tight is never a good look, no matter how great your body is.

The only other dress I like is Madalina Ghenea’s.

    • minime says:

I agree. She’s like a statuette. That dress is really killing on her. She is stunning!

      • MCraw says:

I know. She looks amazing. All I thought was omg she looks SO TALL! And the fabric and color are so rich and lush. She nailed this carpet.

    • Wren says:

I kinda like it too but it overwhelmingly reminds me of a dress Faye Dunaway wore on an episode of Columbo, even down to the color and the hairstyle.

    • Mary-Alice says:

Well, it’s the runaway version of the dress Sophie Hunter wore to the Baftas , in black, but then everyone was so admiring Sophie. It’s hilarious. The dress is typical Margiela.

  5. Jegede says:

Doutzen’s dress is nice enough but its what I would have expected her to wear while pregnant a year ago.

That face is still exquisite though

  6. Greek chic says:

Doutzen is gorgeous but this dress is nothing spectacular.

I like Lara, she looks so much like Brigitte Bardot.
Sienna Miller looks amazing, I love her dress! The red lips suit her.
Barbara Palvin is cute but her dress is for a more mature woman.
Overall everyone looks nice here except Paris Hilton who is ridiculous. She looks like a stupid and attention seeking Cinderella.

  7. Kiddo says:

‘Doutzen’ sounds like one of those unique German words, like ‘schadenfreude’, that has a meaning nowhere else captured in a single word. As best as I can guess, the rough translation is ‘pretty girl making a splash, who you have no idea who she is, and why you should know about her’.

    Used in a sentence: She’s a Doutzen.

    • Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

Not exactly Urban Dictionary material, Kiddo.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

      A rootin’ tootin’ Doutzen.

    • Sisi says:

It’s the frisian language, spoken in the north of Holland and a small part of Germany and Denmark, indeed closely related to German, and apparently Doutzen means ‘little dove’.

But you are so right, Doutzen is Doutzen

      • BB says:

Frisian is (historically) actually much more related to english (more than any other germanic language) than to german (like dutch is a bit closer related to german). And there’s a difference between the west-frisian spoken in Friesland (in the Netherlands) and the East/North Frisian spoken in small northern parts of Germany and Denmark. Sorry for being such a wiseacre;) you’re practically right though 🙂

    • Emmie says:

Actually, if you take out the “o” and “t”, which are kind of superfluous anyway, it IS a German word. Though not in the context you want to use it – ‘duzen’ means being on first name basis with someone. It’s a bit more complicated over here, because we have two versions of ‘you’ and ‘duzen’ refers to the less formal one.

    • Kiddo says:

Guys, you are interfering with my making up sh_t and stuff.

  8. TracySmiles says:

Fassy’s hiding in his hotel room while he wrecks some other lucky, lucky lady’s sweatshop #gah #yesplease

    • ichsi says:

Alicia Vikander is that lucky lady. She’s there too. He’s playing rooster in the yard while he should be filming X-men so I can get my fix of Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr looking into each others eyes longingly.

    • Abigail says:

Fassbender was at the gala last night. There are lots of photos of him with Marion Cotillard, as they auctioned off a work of art from Leo diCaprio’s collection.

  9. AlmondJoy says:

I’m probably one of the few people here that doesn’t think of Doutzen as a great beauty. She does have a very fresh look, but I don’t see “flawless.”

Joan Smalls is so pretty. Not a fan of the dress or hair, though.

Barbara Palvin’s figure looks amaaazing in that strange dress she’s wearing.

    • sills says:

I think if you took off the whole sleeve/chest netting part of Barbara’s dress, it would actually look pretty fierce. She’s got killer curves.

    • qwerty says:

There’s no Joan in this post. try again…

  10. Lucy2 says:

Not loving any of these dresses.
Sienna Miller kind of looks like Tracy Anderson here.

  11. Allie says:

I think Barbara Palvin is so gorgeous. I like that she is a little curvier than the other models.

  12. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

Barbara has the nicest smile. It actually looks genuine.

  13. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I don’t mind Doutzen’s dress. It’s sort of elegant and she’s gorgeous in it. I want to be so beautiful that I can just shove on a red sack with a bow on it and still look amazing.

    Paris looks ridiculous.

  14. Sisi says:

I can appreciate that Doutzen isn’t going for supervamp, like all the other models. It makes her stand out, while the others all go for a similar look.

  15. InvaderTak says:

Isn’t DK’s dress the red version of a dress, that uh, someone…. wore to an awards show of some kind?

Don’t like this bunch as much as the ones in the Kendall post, but everyone is dressed for the same event again! Yay! But siennas wearing the 90s again. No.

    • Dara says:

Why yes, yes she did. In black, at the BAFTAs in February. I’m surprised no one at CB caught that. I do like the dress, I give the ‘who wore it better’ award to Doutzen though.

  16. Jayna says:

That gown on Sienna is so flattering. Love everything about it on her.

  17. Jayna says:

Go away, Paris. Nothing is going to make you happen again.

    • mary simon says:

I hate the texture of Paris’ princess dress – looks like morgellons or some kind of creeping fungus.

  18. meme says:

Doutzen could wear a moldy potato sack and still look gorgeous. That face is exquisite.

  19. askar says:

I love Madalina’s dress, and I like her. Reminds me of Sofia Loren.

  20. Sumodo1 says:

Take a closer look at Lara Stone’s feet. Damn, those shoes must HURT!

    • qwerty says:

Glad she went in flats though, with all the noise about heels in Cannes… could;ve done so on the red carpet too

  21. K. says:

But Fass was there too! I thought to find here his cute pics with Marion. They were auctioning off a Banksy piece owned by Leo DiCaprio.

    • Abigail says:

Sorry, I answered above to say the same thing about Fassy and Marion before I saw your post. Great photos of the two of them together–great chemistry.

  22. RobN says:

How high are Doutzen’s shoes? She looks like a stilt walker.

  23. NKY says:

I really like karlie’s dress, and doutzen’s too. Lara makes the gown work.

  24. Naddie says:

They’re all extremely beautiful women, except from Paris. They all look try-hard, except from Doutzen.
