Brad Pitt’s Stanley McChrystal film, ‘War Machine’, is headed to Netflix: what?

FFN_BJST_Jolie_Pitt_060615_51765838

Here are more photos from the Jolie-Pitt family’s big LAX trip over the weekend. Apparently, the family has decamped to France, possibly for the summer. They took a flight from LAX to Paris, then another flight from Paris to Nice. They apparently flew coach on AirFrance on the Paris-to-Nice leg of the trip. According to all of the eyewitnesses, the kids were well-behaved throughout. No tantrums, no diva ‘tudes, no drama. Honestly, all of those kids have flown internationally since they were babies. They know the drill at this point. Still, it’s nice to note when celebrity children are NOT little d-bags.

Angelina Jolie seems to truly have the summer off – she has no projects on the horizon, to act in or direct, although I’m sure she’s still in post-production for By the Sea. I’m assuming Brad has completed his part in The Big Short (an ensemble film), and he won’t film World War Z 2 until later this year or maybe even 2016. Meanwhile, Deadline just announced that one of Brad’s upcoming projects, the film adaptation of Michael Hastings’ book The Operators, will be heading to Netflix. You heard that correctly.

Netflix has acquired distribution rights to War Machine, the David Michod-directed drama which will star Brad Pitt as a four-star rock star U.S. military general. The character is patterned after Gen. Stanley McChrystal, for a time the commanding general of international and U.S. forces in Afghanistan. The film is a satirical comedy inspired by the bestselling book The Operators: The Wild And Terrifying Inside Story Of America’s War In Afghanistan, by the late journalist Michael Hastings. Script was written by Michod, whose credits include Animal Kingdom and The Rover. Pitt and his Plan B cohorts Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner will produce with Ian Bryce.

This picture package was on Deadline’s list of his Cannes titles, but Pitt and his reps have for several weeks been down the road with Ted Sarandos and his Netflix cohorts on an alternative strategy. With this deal, Sarandos has an opportunity to make the kind of seismic move in features as he did with TV series like House Of Cards. This will be the biggest investment Netflix will have made so far in a feature film, in the $30 million range. It is also the first time Netflix has really gotten hold of a film with one of the biggest global A-list movie stars, in his prime, along with his producing cohorts whose recent credits include Best Picture winner 12 Years A Slave and Best Picture nominee Selma.

Plan B acquired the Hastings book last year and originally it seemed like a straight nonfiction film. It has instead been turned into a fictionalized satire. The book captured McChrystal in his cocky glory, and focused on the backrooms and politics of war and the high-stakes maneuvers and political firestorm that shook the country. Hastings, who followed McChrystal around Europe and Afghanistan for a month in 2010 for a Rolling Stone article, quoted the general badmouthing the White House and its handling of the war. That proved to be his undoing; after Rolling Stone published the article “The Runaway General,” McChrystal was ordered back to D.C. by President Obama, and McChrystal tendered his resignation there.

Said Pitt: We are so excited to be a part of the inspiring commitment by Netflix to produce cutting-edge content and to deliver it to a global audience.”

[From Deadline]

Deadline has more analysis of why this is such an unusual and interesting move – apparently, there will still be a limited theatrical release or something like that, just in case the movie is really great and they want to wage an Oscar campaign, but they’re expecting the bulk of the viewership to come from Netflix streaming. As for the story… it sounds interesting. I covered it when Brad signed on to the film, and I still think it’s a really bold move for Brad as an actor.

First Kate Moss flies Easy Jet know the Jolie-Pitts are flying coach … it’s the end of the world as we know it … (cue REM in the background…)

    • Luca76 says:

They weren’t really flying coach. They were on a plane that was too small to have a first class. I’m sure they were treated as if they were first class. For whatever reason they didn’t want to charter a plane for that leg of their trip-no biggie.

      • Louise177 says:

Seriously doubt that Brad and Angelina demanded to be treated special. They don’t give the vibe of being high maintenance. If they were they would have been in a private jet or hired limos to drive. Besides, there’s no separation in the plane. If the family received special favors the rest of the passengers would have been in an uproar and there would have been photos of the special attention.

      • Luca76 says:

Lol never said they demanded anything. I’m pretty sure if Brad and Angie and all the kids were treated with first class service since they are two of the biggest celebrities on the planet.

  2. lisa2 says:

Brad said in an interview a while back that they (Plan B). were looking into different ways to finance films.
    This is what he said..

At the same time, the actor-producer says Plan B — whose money is raised on a per-film basis — now is starting to look at outside sources of finance. “We have been talking about the next evolution of what we do,” he continues. “Do we stay in the same construct as now? Are there new constructs we can investigate?”

I think this is a bold thing for him/and his Production company to do. He also has a show he produces on HULU; not to mention his partnership with HBO.. Smart man and smart decisions.

    • MrsBPitt says:

I think Brad is very business savvy! I know so many of my friends, who have given up cable and just do Netflex or Hulu. I also know that many of my friends won’t go to a movie theater, because of the outrageous cost and will always wait for movies to go on another medium. I think Brad is looking at the future of the movie business! Not just looks, but brains, too…sigh…love him!

      • Snowflake says:

I love him, too, but I’m willing to share. 😍

      • Azurea says:

        He’s not splitting the atom…..

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Mrs. B, you MUST be friends with my mom! She hasn’t gone to the movie theater since “Despicable Me” came out…when she brought all of us to see it. She hates the prices, hates that she can’t pause it and go to the bathroom……she waits six months to buy the movie on dvd. Netflix and hulu are her gods….lol.

      • laura in LA says:

        Yep, MrsBPitt, you’re describing me.

$15 nowadays for a movie in the theater means it better be worth seeing on the big screen and completely blow my mind – because that’s what I spend per month for lots of Netflix DVDs and streaming. And why get cable, 400 channels and nothing on but lots of stupid talking heads and crappy reality TV, when I can buy/see whatever I want anytime on Google, Hulu or YouTube…

Your hubby doesn’t get much credit for being smart, but he’s a visionary indeed.

    • Denisemich says:

It is an interesting move. By putting it on Netflixs he gains a much larger viewership. Netfiixs subscribers will watch it . Whether they finish it depends on how good it is. However, he instantly gets his message out to a large audience.

I will try almost any movie that streams and seems interesting. I already paid for my month.

    • Sugar says:

I think this is smart on Brad’s part, too. He’s no empty-headed pretty boy if you ever hear him discuss things like architecture. Maybe that’s why he and Anniston didn’t work.

    • Cran says:

I agree this a bold move. Financing a film seems incredibly difficult and I think it is okay that studios are being forced to change their business models. The world is not a stagnant environment. Plus I’m okay with the existence of more outlets showcasing the expanse of talents, points of view, races and genders not easily or currently available.

    • boredblond says:

Better a sure sell to netflix than the possibility of a box office flop..(which could affect future negotiations and celebrity status)..just covering the bases

  3. Catelina says:

Been waiting for news on this project, and hearing that it’s going to have comedy is pretty much all I need to be onboard. There is a possibly Oscar baity movie which is supposed to be released in time for the 2016 oscars called Beasts of No Nation directed by Cary Fukanaga. It also has a Netflix deal, similar to this one, so if the movie measures up and they decide to campaign it, we should get a decent idea from that about how well Netflix can do with the Oscars. Hopefully more films will go this route, my local theater never plays movies Im interested in, and I usually end up waitin until things are available online anyways

    • Zapp Brannigan says:

I am the same as you, local cinema shows all the marvel type films but no smaller non-franchise type films that I am interested in. I usually watch online, greater selection and great documentaries that I would not see otherwise as I live in the back end of nowhere, Ireland.

  4. Maya says:

If there is one thing people can’t argue about is the fact that Brad is a brilliant producer. He knows that the future lies with the television.

The JPs both the parents and children are always well behaved. We have never seen either Angelina nor Brad falling out of clubs being drunk/high, never seen any of the children throw tantrums, pulling faces or being rude to anyone. In fact people who meant them always comment on the fact that they are well behaved, well mannered, friendly & polite – the credit goes to Brad & Angelina.

PS: please write about the WWZ movie Brad is going to make with the divine Marion Cotillard. Brad & Marion pairing is a dream come true for me. Plus it will also be a slap to those haters who claims that Brad career is failing and that he will never act with a beautiful actress because Angelina is jealous….

    • Greata says:

@Maya…Do you have any info on Africa…it seems to have disappeared from Jolie’s Imdb? The last I heard they were having financing issues.

    • Cory says:

It’s either he’s a great producer, or it’s because he has people clambering over each other to work with him. His name alone would help him attract the best business opps and offers.

  5. Cory says:

Netflicks is going to take over hollywood. Cinemas will be for families and children and teenagers only. And Netflicks will finance more interesting films than old guard HW will.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I hope so. The alternative is to go the way of the music industry and not have a format that consumers will use to buy the product. I wonder if Netflix has a way to prevent piracy.

      • Cory says:

Right now it’s that much harder to send a movie by email or download or whatever just because you’re talking about gigabytes and not mere megabytes (a single song just a few MBs). So that’s something against piracy and for Netflicks, for now.

  6. Emma - the JP Lover says:

I had a feeling the Jolie-Pitts were headed to Miraval. That seems to be their destination pattern following Brad’s solo trips to France. 🙂

  7. Speaker says:

How the mighty have fallen. Netflix? Lol.

    • Catelina says:

Streaming is the future, growing continually more popular, and Netflix is the distributor of some of the most exciting original programming to come out in recent years. This is a bold move for sure, but I don’t think it evidences any sort of decline. If anything, it shows confidence in the movie and in himself as a producer and a movie star to make something new like this a success

    • Maya says:

Let’s see – he has 3 movies signed on (this, WW2 movie with Marion Cotillard & WWZ sequel) producing up to 10 movies/TV shows – movies and TV shows who has won awards.

Yeah the mighty has fallen (sarcasm).

Unlike you it seems Brad, David Fincher and other notable stars knows that the future of cinema lies in television. Many people are watching TV more than they go to the cinema.

    • doofus says:

don’t turn up your nose at Netflix…they have a LOT of really good original programming and it IS pretty much the “wave of the future”. nothing will replace the theater experience, for sure, but with large screens getting larger/cheaper, it’s almost feasible to have a “home theater” system in your house with a big screen and inexpensive stereo. and who wants to pay $12-15
to listen to a bunch of people talk like they’re in their living room?…at home you have your own bathroom, you can pause the movie, raid the ‘fridge…

I think this is a smart (and yes, bold) move for Pitt and the rest of the production team. however, there area a lot of people on this board who laugh at other actors and actresses who go “direct to video”, so let’s see if the same standards apply here…

      • Catelina says:

I don’t think you can compare this Netflix deal with straight to VOD movies. The latter happens because nobody wants to distribute your movie in theaters, not because you are trying to explore a new and exciting method of reaching audiences.

      • Esmom says:

Agree with everything you’re saying, although I personally still enjoy a movie at a theater as a treat once in a while.

I do think the tricky part is overcoming the “straight to video” stigma that a move like this carries. But if anyone can do it Brad and Netflix can. They just need to, to borrow a line from Mad Men, change the conversation.

      • doofus says:

Catelina, people have mocked the Netflix route as they would VOD movies. so, yeah, I’m going to compare the two. I do think it’s a fair comparison.

Esmom, agree on the theater…it’s just that I go so rarely because of what I mentioned. I don’t want to pay $15 to have some teenagers in front of me talking and texting the whole time. bf and I went to a Sunday noon show for the last one and it was very sparsely attended…PERFECT. (the only ones we go to the theater for are ones like Mad Max or Lord of the Rings type movies.) Also agree on your last point…THIS is what could lift that stigma, at least a little bit.

      • Catelina says:

@Doofus, how can people have ‘mocked the Netflix route’ when this exclusive Netflix distribution deal, with a short Oscar qualifying run in theaters, meaning they have faith it could be a great movie, is one of the first of its kind? And how can a deal like this be compared fairly with a movie ending up on VOD without a theatrical run simply because nobody wanted to pay for it to go to theaters?

      • doofus says:

not on THIS deal…on other actors/actresses doing Netflix shows. that’s all I meant.

more and more movies are going DTV because of all of the marketing costs etc…a studio can reap a LOT of money and reach a much higher number of people than only putting it in a theater. doesn’t necessarily mean they didn’t want to pay for a theatrical run, just that they can make MORE money with VOD/DTV. there are a lot of movies that did crap in the theater but made HUGE amounts, more than the theater, in VOD or “rentals”. surely, blockbusters like Mad Max or WWZ (or any of the superhero movies…) don’t fall into that category, but one with a more character-driven plot can do much better that way.

      • miss t says:

@catelina, a lot of indie films are released in theatres and vod on the same day. And yet people still mock the stars of those films for having a “straight to video” movie. So I think it is a fair comparision.

      • Tiffany :) says:

People can mock others…but that doesn’t mean that they have a valid reason to do so or even know what they are talking about. There are a number of films that have reached a larger audience and made more money from VOD than in theaters.

Honestly, VOD and Netflix are going to be the norm very soon.

    • Rhiley says:

From a business perspective this is a great move for Brad Pitt. Netflix is a complete game changer. More and more people are ditching expensive cable packages in favor of Netflix/Amazon Prime/Hulu, and I suspect in the future, more and more movies will be released on Netflix- probably at more premium price- the same day they are released in theaters. I don’t know much about Hulu, or even Amazon Prime, but Netflix has some terrific original TV shows so it makes sense that they will also have some terrific original movies. Brad is known as a risk taker, and very often, his risks pay off. People thought World War Z was going to be his albatross, but it was a win for him. Even if this were to flop, I don’t think it will hurt his image at all because he has produced some really important and creative films in the last five years.

    • laura in LA says:

Are you kidding?! Netflix is practically all I watch because you can do so anywhere, anytime on various devices, and this is how most people want their entertainment now.

Their business is booming here in LA, and most celebs would kill for a Netflix series or deal nowadays. This is the Golden Age of TV, except that rather than network or cable, we’re talking about the small screen.

Netflix is now the “new” HBO or AMC. (Full disclosure: No, I don’t work for any of the aforementioned companies.)

  8. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

A four star rock star military general?

    • Esmom says:

I know. Personally, this film has zero appeal for me, lol.

    • Olenna says:

I can see why Pitt would make this movie. McChrystal was a special ops general, arrogant, charismatic and smart who criticized White House decisions and had an entourage of elitist subordinates that inadvertently helped take him down from senior warlord in Afghanistan to retired nobody in a matter of months. If you have time, read the Rolling Stone article about this dude; it pretty much has all the drama of a good military movie.

      • Catelina says:

This movie sounds great to me. Honestly, I was getting kind of sick of Brad doing all these war movies but this one will apparently be a satirical comedy (and it’s the Afghanistan war so that’s also different than WW2 over and over again) and Mcchrystal is a great character for Brad to play.

  9. norah says:

considering the fact that he has projects not only with regular studios and with hulu and hbo and now netflix brad has got all avenues covered imo. Plple tend to avoid going to cinemas

  10. Astrid says:

Team Jollie-Pitt Keeping it classy in coach and raising kids like the rest of us while being famous as actors-directors

  11. Tig says:

On one hand, I love seeing a movie in a theater- under the right conditions!! Haven’t been to a weekend night showing in years. That being said, streaming is the way of the future. With so many movies going to VOD, see that “stigma”, whatever it was, also going away. Consumers are driving that train- Brad is smart to be exploring all options.

    • kai212 says:

VOD only has a stigma if you have a poor quality product that nobody wants to see- that will never go away, rightfully so. Streaming is the wave of the future, or, if you are a teen/millennial, the present.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

I wish I saw half of the movies on VOD that some of these posters have–the only VOD movies I’ve seen have been flat out awful.

    • tracking says:

Agreed. I think he’s very smart to pursue this option.

  12. Catelina says:

I wonder what Angelina will be doing next. Are those captain marvel rumors we heard a while back based on anything or just fans wishes?

    • Maya says:

Frankly I would love for her to do Cleo especially if it was with Daniel Day Lewis, Leo D & Scorsese (Sony hack).

Africa also sounded good but otherwise a movie about Angelina’s close friend Jane Godall will be brilliant.

Salt 2 and Kay Scarpetta movies will be added bonus but those only seems to be my personal wish….

      • Catelina says:

I don’t think Cleopatra is gonna happen, at least not anytime soon. The studio owns the rights, not Angie. So if they aren’t on the same page with her, they won’t film it. I would love to see her do a dark comedy in terms of acting, maybe with Fincher, or the Coens. In terms of directing, it would be interesting to see her do Marvel although their movies have a light, comedic touch that I’m not sure she would be suited for.

    • Claire says:

She has no projects. In that Department she is like Aniston. Nobody wants to work with them 🙂

      • Kila says:

Uh, based on the Sony emails, Angelina’s name was mentioned quite a bit for roles. Even Scott Rudin after all he said about her was desperate for her to do Little House.
Aniston was never mentioned for roles

She is not desperate for roles like Aniston. She was top pick for Gravity, Silver Linings based on reports….she gets offers but does not take them.

      • Claire says:

She refuses the roles so many times that no one will offer her anything knowing that the answer is no. So my statement is valid.

      • Paige says:

She refuses the roles because she doesn’t want to be an actress anymore but a director. She said it in a recent interview. She realized five years ago that she doesn’t want to act anymore. She prefers being behind the camera. It shows because Maleficent was her first film in front of the camera in four years. She has BTS, but she also directed it.

      • Claire says:

And what is her next Directional project after By the Sea ?

      • Kila says:

        How is your statement valid?
Angelina gets loads of offers, Aniston does not. She still gets offers, her saying no to many does not affect the offers coming in.

Aniston on the other hand can’t even get distribution for her films.

She just finished By the Sea, maybe she wants a break. Directing is more work than acting. The cinemographer for By the Sea recently said AJ has mentioned working on another film with him & she has an idea for something.

      • Colette says:

LMAO That’s funny with all those actors mentioned in the leaked emails Aniston was never mentioned, non entity. There is a difference between turning down major roles(AJ) and NEVER being considered for major roles(JA).AJ has stated she will work less and focus on charity work and family.
What is #1 Snubbed for an Oscar working on? Oh yeah a cookbook

  13. Claire says:

Didn’t he said that he wasn’t gone work more in the future because he wanted to spend more time with his kids before they gone?

    – Esquire interview?

    • Catelina says:

I’m too lazy to verify this, but I vaguely remember something like that. The two things about that though are that filming in a movie as an actor really doesn’t take that long. Depending on the movie of course but generally each one is only a couple months. Directing is a much longer, more time consuming process. So what seems like a ton of work to us probably doesn’t feel that way for him, especially when the family is traveling to the locations with him.
And of course, seeing these great opportunities pop up he might have found a renewed desire to work more, so his mindset is different than it was when he gave that interview.

      • lisa2 says:

Brad has not worked that much. His last starring role was in Fury.. Then he did 2 weeks maybe for The Big Short.. before that he was working with his wife and the kids were with them.

so I don’t see how he has “gone back” on what he said in that interview. Their kids go with them when they work.

  14. Maya says:

Oh the power of the Jolie Pitts.

Netflix shares just went massively up after yesterday’s announcement about them joining forces with the king of Hollywood aka Brad Pitt.

    • lisa2 says:

Maybe this will help those people that are comparing actors whose movies go straight to VOD to what Brad’s deal with Netflix is all about. NOT THE SAME.. Netflix is acting as a “studio”.. Making and financing the film. That is not what happens when a film goes to VOD. Especially a film with an established name.

Brad and Plan B are doing great things.. Trail blazing the way.

      • pwal says:

It really is an utterly brilliant move on his part. Given that he has cited numerous times that fans often ‘find’ his movies outside of the theater-going experience, he is going toward an already established fan base that is already over current studio offerings. Plus if you look at the way 12YAS was handled, primarily via social media and festival buzz, it makes even more sense that he’s going in this direction. I suspect that he doesn’t want the major studios to get in the way and bungle the final results a la Killing Them Softly or WWZ, which had studio people conducting whisper campaigns against their very own studio-produced film to Vanity Fair. Or when Paramount tried to scuttle 12YAS awards buzz by ‘implying’ that Brad violated his deal with the studio by taking 12YAS to another studio.

I wouldn’t go as far as saying that Brad is fed up with the studios, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he is. Unlike Clooney, Brad isn’t getting all grovelly regarding his future prospects with them. If this project pans out, not only would he up the prestige of Netflix, which is taking a beating by backing Adam Sandler’s latest cl^$terfcuk, he would reinforce his standing in HW, although HW wouldn’t readily admit it out loud.

    • Catelina says:

      Awesome. Brad is the man

  15. Me too says:

Cable and movie theaters are SO 20th century. I ditched cable many years ago and live off Amazon prime (the Best!) and Netflix. I’ve been to the theater once in the last seven years and it was an awful experience. Being restrained to a seat in a dark and loud room is unpleasant. It shocks me that people still pay such a wasteful amount of money on cable. You might as well throw cash into the fireplace.
