Charlize Theron & Sean Penn apparently split sometime in May, after Cannes

If I’m being honest, I always believed that Charlize Theron and Sean Penn would never make it as a couple long-term. What surprised me was that they actually did make it work for a year and a half and that Charlize truly seemed to make Sean into less of an a–hole. Now sources are whispering to Us Weekly (they broke the story) and People Magazine that Charlize and Sean are done, and that Charlize was the one to break things off. Interesting.

Sad news. Sean Penn and his fiancee Charlize Theron have a called it quits after nearly a year and a half together, multiple sources exclusively confirm to Us Weekly. One insider tells Us that the high-profile pair, who got together in December 2013, decided that their romance was over following their most recent jaunt to the Cannes Film Festival in the south of France. The source tells Us that Theron, 39, was the one to break things off with the fellow Oscar winner.

Theron and Penn, 54, had known each other for decades before their friendship blossomed into romance. A year into their relationship, Us exclusively reported in December 2014 that they had gotten secretly engaged during a trip to Paris. There was, however, no elaborate proposal. “There’s no ring, but they are committed,” an insider told Us at the time.

[From Us Weekly]

People Magazine points out that they haven’t been seen together since Cannes in mid-May and sources tell People that in the last month, Charlize stayed at her Hollywood home (with Jackson) and Penn has been staying at his Malibu home. Charlize is apparently in England now, filming The Huntsman and Sean is staying put in California. Hm. It does seem rather sudden, doesn’t it? I mean, they were completely loved up throughout the spring, appearing on multiple red carpets together and talking about their relationship in interviews. It seems like Cannes was the breaking point. But why?

Alright, I have the booze, who has the popcorn?!

  2. Mrs. Ari Gold says:

Wanna bet he lost his temper and she finally saw that he’s not a very nice person.

    • Another Critic says:

      This right here!

    • Say wha?!?! says:

      Bingo!

    • jinni says:

If that happened, I hope Jackson wasn’t around when it went down.

I wonder what this break up will mean for their friendship?

    • FLORC says:

temper towards her son is my guess. Some women will accept a guy blowing up at them, but the moment it’s direccted or being witnessed by their child… Done.

      • Loulou says:

I hope it wasn’t anything directed to her son. I thought Sean was adopting him?

      • FLORC says:

He can blow up at anything. And he’s directed it at his own children before. I wouldn’t doubt this might have been the case. At the very least her son might be the factor in this.

    • NUTBALLS says:

Glad she had the sense to call it off. Too bad she didn’t have the sense to keep herself and her son away in the first place.

    • Stephanie says:

Boom. I bet you called it.

    • Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

Or maybe they got sick of shagging each other.

    • Artemis says:

      My top 3 guesses:

      1. lost his temper (I agree with some posters, it might have been directed at her son)
      2. pushed marriage too much (Theron never seemed as intent to do it whereas Penn seemed too eager)
      3. the lust wore off (aka she realised who she was fucking and threw up in her mouth a little bit)

Seeing as she seems like the type for long-term relationship (a decade with Townsend), my guess is he must have done something really bad because they both seemed really IN it. Disgustingly so. Like Brangelina-type of commitment without the double hotness and decent personalities.

Either way: OH WHAT A DAY, WHAT A LOVELY DAY!

      • Caroline says:

My guess is he couldn’t stand playing second fiddle to her. At Cannes it was HER show, her moment, and he was just this old, shriveled-up, shorter-than-her date on the red carpet. Like most men his age, and particularly entitled movie actors, if it’s not all about him, he’s out.

      • Liv says:

Yep, and you know, he never felt truly loved! 😉

    • Eleonor says:

      My first thought too!

    • Red says:

Well, if this is to be believed: http://blindgossip.com/?p=71939#more-71939

  3. MelissaManifesto says:

A breakup does not always need a build-up, sometimes it comes abruptly or like I’ve always said, there are details we simply don’t have. For all the good Sean Penn does in Haiti, a country that is very dear to my heart, I have always read reports that he was abusive, maybe she finally saw something.

It would be interesting to see who Charlize dates next, I always get the vibe that she isn’t easy to deal with it.

    • MCraw says:

I wonder what he thinks of the ethnic cleansing currently happening in DR to rid the country of Haitian descendants. Smdh. Don’t spend your vacation dollars there! Go to Puerto Rico instead.

      • MelissaManifesto says:

Hey MCraw. DR has been getting racist by the day, even more so than before. Just today someone posted on Instagram a link to sign a petition with what you just mentioned.

      • Tiffany :) says:

Oh no, that is awful to hear about DR!

  4. someone says:

I didn’t see that coming….said no one ever

    • Lauren says:

Charlize said Sean was “the love of her life” in a recent interview.
Sean has not said one negative statement about Charlize.
Maybe Sean’s good behavior expired- He has a terrible history with women.
I still cannot believe how he disparaged Robin for years – her strength amazes me.

      • perplexed says:

Really? Even more than Stuart Townsend?

      • Ankhel says:

When someone – especially someone with a string of broken relationships – goes on and on about how they’ve never been so happy, that their love is the greatest ever… Yeah. Countdown to gunfight at noon.

      • Artemis says:

‘Maybe Sean’s good behavior expired- He has a terrible history with women.’

Yup, he has a thing for strong women but he also likes to break them down. He puts them on a pedestal and then shoves them back off.

Some people never change and he was always a violent person, why would that change at his age? People usually are pretty consistent with their personality unless they want to change. When has Penn ever evolved for the better? Even his son is trash.

I think he turned on Theron in a spectacular fashion and unlike Madonna and Wright, she knew to stop and back away out of the relationship before marriage or before his behaviour got even worse.

  5. RobN says:

I think it’s too bad. I always like it when two fairly nasty people get together; I feel like it saves two innocents who might have ended up with them.

    • belle de jour says:

“I always like it when two fairly nasty people get together; I feel like it saves two innocents who might have ended up with them.”

Worthy of an embroidered cushion on a loveseat. Thanks for making me smile.

    • Alice says:

That’s why I hope Kimye is forever.

    • EN says:

I sort of felt the same way when they started dating because Charlize is known to be not a very nice person.
But then I read about what she went through as a child and I decided I am not in a position to judge her. If something like that happened to me I am not sure I would’ve been able to cope at all. Never mind pursuing a career in Hollywood.

    • Tara says:

There is no proof that Charlize is a nasty person. People just take a look at her and assume she must be an ice queen. Her co-stars and friends say the contrary. There has been loads of evidence of Sean Penn being an abusive jerk, so to hope a woman who has done nothing that bad that we know of to end up with an abuser is just wrong.

      • Ankhel says:

From what I’ve read, Charlize is easily offended and hard to please. She often quarrels with other actors, and has been known to communicate only through assistants – even when the other person was right in front of her.

      • sills says:

There’s no proof but there are sooooo many stories floating around about her from industry people. She has a seriously nasty reputation, and it has nothing to do with how she looks. RobN’s comment was right on.

      • anon33 says:

Well, as far as I know, she never tied anyone to a chair and physically amd emotionally abused them over a period of two days, so you know…false equivalence…

  6. Liz says:

Also didn’t Mad Max have its official release at Cannes and Charlize get so much amazing press for her performance? Maybe he didn’t like how much attention she was getting.

    • tracking says:

Yeah, I can well imagine him unhappy and acting out when not the center of attention at all times.

    • Beezers says:

That was my first thought, too, but I didn’t want to do the work to find out if he also had anything showing at Cannes.

    • Tara says:

He had a recent bomb with the Gunman while Charlize got so many raves for Mad Max. Maybe he was jealous of her success. I know he used to be very jealous of Madonna’s success. If he is still that way, talk about pathetic.

      • Ankhel says:

It’s possible that he thought a relationship with Charlize would improve his career too. That hasn’t happened. I can definitely see him being jealous and angry, people don’t really change do they? Not at his age anyway.

      • Artemis says:

        Good theory.
Madonna was already successful though. Multiple books have asserted that it was her image (too controversial) and attention-seeking behavior that didn’t gel with Penn. She was known to call the paps when she knew full well that he hated that type of attention. Madonna always cared about herself and her career first despite him being the love of her life. The violence kind of forced them apart as the media was too intrusive (Madonna likes to control the narrative and she couldn’t anymore in the end). Penn is too obsessive and jealous to be with a successful woman.

Robin Wright did dial back her career for him but I don’t think she was famous enough to really be considered successful (I don’t know really). She had potential though which was put on pause during the marriage.

Mad Max has affirmed why Theron is on the A-list as some of her previous films haven’t been that great (she was ridiculous as the Queen). I can see how this massive attention and adoration annoyed him.

  7. Another Critic says:

I think the real break up happened much earlier in her mind and she planned to ditch the hobbit after Cannes. Didn’t they have issues on set?

    • Absolutely says:

Please don’t insult hobbits. What did they ever do to earn that comparison?

      • Ankhel says:

Sean Penn in the Shire… By the time Frodo and the others came back, he would’ve burned down half of it and gotten Rosie pregnant.

  8. Sandra says:

Haven’t thought much about her since the gym incident in which she rolled her eyes at a person saying a mere hello to her. They’ll both be over it in a month.

  9. Snazzy says:

Wasn’t he in the process of adopting her son or something? Or did I just imagine that?

    • jinni says:

There was talking of him adopting Jackson and also baby proofing his Malibu home to make it safe for Jackson.

      • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

I know break ups can happen at any time but when it comes to celebrities I can’t imagine why they ever make such concrete and legally difficult to fix changes to their life.

Thank GOD he didn’t or we’d have another Kelly/Halle situation.

  10. Friday says:

Although it might have been flattering at first, maybe she finally realized that a decent person doesn’t stay married to a woman for 14 years, have 2 children with her and then publicly state that it was a fraud and he never really loved her.

    • PunkyMomma says:

^Truth. It’s a cold thing to say – even if he really didn’t love Robin, they do share two children. It just proves that Penn is an egotistical jacka**, thinking only of himself. Theron is well rid of him.

    • Bread and Circuses says:

I kind of wonder if he was drinking too hard when he said that. After the divorce, he seemed to go through a lot of starlets in a hurry, and I wonder if he was just having a really bitter booze-and-rebound-sex episode.

Charlize is a hard-ass herself, and she did seem to make Sean a better person while they were together. They were (are?) such a weird couple, but they seemed to work.

  11. Abbott says:

Given his history, I’m sure we can guess why this ended so abruptly.

    • Gia says:

Yeah. Watching my fiancé snort rails off a hookers tits in Cannes would be a deal breaker for me too. Allegedly. Probably…But allegedly.

  12. EN says:

Better now than after getting married. I also read earlier in the year that Penn was planning to adopt her son. That would’ve been a right mess.

  13. Wentworth Miller says:

Always wondered what she was doing, with him.

    • Birdix says:

It’s like a Midsummer Nights dream –she’s Titania, the fairy queen, and he’s Bottom, with the head of an ass. And she is in love with him beyond all reason. Finally Puck comes back and takes the spell off, the dong haze lifts, and she’s horrified. I’d think when the spell is broken, Sean Penn must seem pretty revolting.

  14. Paige says:

She got smart and left. Relationships built on lust gets old fast. Her son needs a better male role model. Women and men shouldn’t introduce their children to every man/woman they date.

  15. Tara says:

These two were inseparable, so I thought it was weird they weren’t seen together recently. This may seem abrupt, but this is Sean Penn we’re talking about here. All it could take is one horrible drunken fight where he crossed the line and Charlize said they are done. She doesn’t seem like the type of woman to put up with any nonsense.

I knew Sean would screw it up. Even though they seemed passionate and constantly talked about their love, they still didn’t seem on the same page. Sean talked about wanting to get married again and Charlize made it clear she was not interested in it. I can see Sean making a big drama out of that alone.

    • The Other Katherine says:

Given her background, I think one fight where there was a glimpse of physical abuse (e.g., shoving, shaking, throwing things) would be enough for Charlize to be dunzo. I don’t think Sean Penn is ever going to be someone who doesn’t eventually behave like that, sooner or later, in a relationship.

  16. Mo2 says:

I get a substance abuse/anger management issues vibe from him. I think Charlize will do fine on her own.

  17. Jayna says:

Madonna is salivating just about now. She thought she was going to get him back when her toy boy left her and Sean was single. He came to some event she put on for Art for Freedom and were all smiley. She went to Haiti. But Charlize came out all of a sudden very serious about him and in love. Madonna sat back and was biding her time, still single. But she won’t be able to handle Sean pining over the stunning, much younger Charlize. So they will never work.

  18. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

There’s a lot of reasons one could guess but honestly, regardless of why…thank God.

He has a reputation of abuse and she has a fragile younger son. Conversely I also wouldn’t want to read daily posts about what an evil SOB he is after the fact as she fights to strip him of all parental rights.

Thank God they’re done with for everyone’s sake.

  19. DottieDot says:

    Meh. They’re both meh.

  20. Janie says:

This really surprised me, I thought they’d get married. Good luck to both!

  21. SouthAfricanOxygen says:

QQ,Gnat,Mimif, and Shambles,I’m a fan!!!!!! Them two! Sigh! It’s whatever. I really think they were cute together though! Two,smug Hollywood stars…had they procreated…Tjesus! Lordt! Only kidding. Why is she so beautiful?

    • mimif says:

Someone needs to photoshop a pic of their smug little chain-smoking rage baby immediately.

  22. Tiffany says:

They did a movie together and things were suspiciously quiet after that. I think them working on that film broke the camels back and things ended after that.

The press for that film is going to be epic. Who needs to see the movie when the real drama and award winning performances will be in the interviews.

    • Catelina says:

This press tour is up there with the By the Sea promo junket in terms of my anticipation

  23. Melain says:

Oh my word! You don’t say. Well they both just seem like such lovely, kind people.

  24. DavidBowie says:

Maybe she woke up one day and realized she was sleeping with a leathery canned ham.

  25. Dee Kay says:

YAAAAYYYY!!!!!!! I love Charlize Theron as an actress and find Sean Penn way overrated as an actor, and I think she’s gorgeous and he’s physically repulsive. So I HATED seeing them together. I know this is shallow, but frankly, just not having to see his rotten, smug, gross face and hair (eewww) every time I see a pic of her on the red carpet gives me cause for celebration.

Also: I totally believe, just based on his statements during and after the divorce from Wright, that he is just 10000% a total douchebag. Whatever her reason was for dumping his a**, and I would buy any of the reasons that people have suggested above, I am glad she didn’t bind herself and her son to that horrible person for the rest of their lives.

    • Jayna says:

Never is he overrated as an actor for me. The guy has done some amazing roles and been brilliant in them.

  26. Liberty says:

Don’t think they broke up. Stay tuned for August.

  27. MAC says:

Loved Mad Max Fury Road. Was surprised by the film.
This now not couples personal life did not cross my mind what does at times when I see an image of him is I would love for Robin to write a book.

  28. phlyfiremama says:

When he pushed himself front and center when they were at HER movie premiere I thought then that something was up…

    • FingerBinger says:

He never pushed himself front and center. When they were in Cannes he stood back while she was photographed.

  29. Priya says:

Thank goodness. I don’t think she was nice to Mowry at Soulcycle but Sean Penn is so wrong for her. She can do better!

  30. Tara says:

There is a rumor that in Cannes they got into a fight that got so bad hotel security got involved and Charlize ended up sleeping in her nanny’s hotel room.

Don’t know if that is true, but Sean must have done something awful for it to end that abruptly when they were just so lovey dovey.

Wonder if they get back together.

  31. Flower says:

OMGosh! who saw that coming? …….everyone?

  32. Lucy2 says:

Maybe she saw photos from Cannes and suddenly realized she was dating a piece of beef jerky.

  33. Kiddo says:

They both seemed to be trying to make it the most precious-est, perfect-est, sexiest love affair evah. When that happens, you know it’s doomed for failure. Either they were trying too hard to convince others that it was the bestest relationship ever, or they were trying to convince themselves.

It just wasn’t realistic, it smacked of early heavy-duty infatuation/lust.

That said, will they get back together, and then keep it zipped?

  34. Elfie says:

She doesn’t seem like someone who would tolerate being abused so if he turned on her in one of his rages that would be the end of the relationship.

Only a matter of time really, abusers don’t change until they recognise their wrongdoing, feel genuine remorse and get the help they need to change. He doesn’t even realise that he’s the problem as his nasty statements about his ex revealed. So no change. Those who communicate their anger through violence will do that with you too, no matter how charming they may seem.

  35. Amy Tennant says:

She’s probably glad she made him get rid of all his guns. From an outsider’s perspective, it seemed odd to me that a woman who came from a DV family background would date a guy widely alleged to be an abuser, but we can never know another couple’s real story.

    • Cynthia says:

right? i thoughts about that too, why would you date a known abuser??

      • Dee Kay says:

He probably acted totally sweet and angelic around her…until he didn’t. And as for her dating a known abuser, he probably told her all of those stories about him were lies…and she believed him, in part because children of DV families often don’t realize they’re falling for the same “type” of person as their abusive parent until the other person shows unmistakable rage and violence. She could have fallen for the “devil in disguise,” is what I’m saying.

      • Amy Tennant says:

I thought that she could be subconsciously drawn to someone like her father, but I didn’t want to come out and say it.

  36. Beth says:

I glad that Charlize finally got some insight. I will follow the conspiracy theories here … you all got me some good ideas!
Remember when he used to date ScarJo back in 2011 (?)? He was also supposed to have an affair with Natalie Portman while still being married to Robin.

  37. Nikki says:

I’m very glad she’s split from the foul smoked ham angerholic, and I pray they never reconcile!

  38. wow says:

    Go get her, Keanu Reeves!

  39. LA Juice says:

so it took him a year and a half before he punched her…. sigh.
