Tyra Banks posts a makeup free selfie (a real one): thirsty or awesome?

Tyra Banks did something awesome on Instagram. She did what a lot of female celebrities do and posted a “makeup free” selfie. Most of the time, these celebs are completely full of it. They’re either still wearing minimal makeup, or they tweak the lighting of the photo. Even worse, they apply generous filters to make themselves look glamorous while still “barefaced.” It drives me nuts when this happens.

In true model fashion, Tyra fully pulled her claim off. You can tell she didn’t apply concealer to hide undereye circles. No nude lip balm, and no ridiculous duck face under soft lighthing. In the caption, Tyra called out the fake #nofilter crowd and said, “I wanted to smooth out my dark circles so badly!!! But I was like, ‘Naw, Ty. Show ’em the REAL you.’” I usually think Tyra is over the top, but this was really awesome of her to do. These #nofilter photos are usually designed to gather up compliments, but I don’t think Tyra cares.

Not that Tyra isn’t promoting anything. She and Chrissy Teigen will soon premiere their new daytime talkshow, The F.A.B. Life. Some media outlets already tried to start feud rumors, but Chrissy and Tyra shut it down on Twitter.

Not thirsty, not awesome, just “oh… ok.”

  2. Kelly says:

    It’s both!

    • Belle Epoch says:

      This^^^

She’s always thirsty but this is REAL. I hate those “no makeup” pictures when you can see the lip gloss etc. (yeah you, People magazine).

  3. LadyMTL says:

I kind of wish that she wasn’t pulling a weird face, because she does look so good and I find it distracting that she’s mugging for the camera. Heck, if I looked 1/10th as stunning as she does makeup-free, I’d weep with joy, lol.

    • Elisa the I. says:

hmm, but on the pic with the black dress she has a similar facial expression.
And I agree, she is stunning.

  4. jen2 says:

Why does she look like she stuck her finger in a light socket?

  5. Louise177 says:

I don’t know why she has her eyes open so wide. It makes her look stupid but I do like that Tyra actually did a no makeup photo. So many celebrities do selfies or photo shoots claiming no makeup when it’s obvious that they have concealer or foundation on.

    • mystified says:

I agree that wide eyed look seems to be a tic she’s developed recently. It has become really distracting and unmodel-like. I bet if one of her ANTM contestants was doing that she would call them out on it.

    • Rachel says:

      She’s smizing Louise.

Jokes aside though, she is very pretty. I always tell people I always feel the most attractive when I wake up in the morning. Aside from the rat’s nest on my head…

    • Erandyn says:

“I don’t know why she has her eyes open so wide. ”
That just made me think… if her eyes are open wide and her eyebrows are raised, why doesn’t she have lines on her forehead? I mean, it’s not even an age thing, even kids have natural lines there. I smell a rat.

      • oneshot says:

I’m almost thirty with no botox or anti-aging creams etc, and I don’t get forehead lines from eyebrow raising. Not unless my brows are raised SUPER high. And I’m not even black, unlike Tyra (so ‘black don’t crack’ isn’t even on my side here)

Not saying Tyra hasn’t had botox since I am no expert, but just pointing out that it’s not true that everyone gets visible forehead wrinkles from raised eyebrows.

  6. Lucy2 says:

It’s amazing how normal some of the celebrities look with all the make up gone. Tyra looks pretty no matter what, but I give her credit for actually doing that.

  7. Barrett says:

She looks real, flawed and still beautiful. Props to her.

  8. Jess says:

For some reason Tyra has never bothered me, she’s harmless! She still looks gorgeous here. I’ve been trying to go without make up more often the last few months, my chin broke out so bad last spring and I’m trying everything I can to avoid that this year, so far so good. It does feel freeing to go without it, and I never wore much to begin with, just surprised by how different it feels.

    • Erinn says:

I like her too. She’s never really offended me. She means well, I think.

I’m currently so broken out – a lot of random stress hitting in the last couple months, coupled with the office carpet getting ripped up/replaced in a building without great air quality to begin with – it’s rough. I had convinced myself that my 20’s would mean much less acne – I was so wrong lol.

    • Kitten says:

Me too, but admittedly, I never followed all the negative gossip about her. I just always thought she was a pro-woman, intelligent lady.

Layers of makeup is NOT a modern look.
I also find that as I get older, too much makeup just makes me look older.

Not that I don’t wear makeup–I love my mascara, peach lip liner, and gloss.
I’m just saying that less is more.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Not that you are “older” but you’re so right about makeup as you age. I have to be really careful, especially with eye makeup, or I’m just sort of highlighting the lines. Nothing sparkly. Not that I wore heavy makeup ever, but you have more options when you’re younger.

      • yellow says:

A hair, skin, and nails supplement helped me immensely to the point where I finally had “reliably” clear skin, but had to take for a few months to get there. Wish I had known to do this in my earlier 20’s as it seemed I often had just one or two breakouts, but never truly clear skin, always just “almost”. This really worked for me. I randomly chose the one by futurebiotics, but there are probably dozens that would do the same thing. I take something similar but different now, but it’s for different reason (still take to maintain my skin though).

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Same, Tess, she seems pretty nice to me.

  9. Rhiley says:

“Naw, Ty. Show ’em the REAL you,” is going to be my new mantra.

  10. kri says:

Normally she gets at least 4 out of 5 eye rolls, but at least she is truly makeup ( and filter) free here. Good for her. It’s not a sin to have flaws. I see so many people wearing Insta faces-even at the gym or grocery store. It’s really disconcerting to watch someone touch up their eyebrows in a weightroom and then take a selfie.

    • Reeely?? says:

Eternal skeptic here; I see eye makeup -possibly eye liner etc. Plus the wide eye look isn’t the real anybody IMO.

      • oneshot says:

….her lower lash line is sparse enough that you see only the pink waterline and maybe a few eyelashes (her own natural ones), I don’t see any sign of eyeliner or mascara/other eye makeup (her upper lashes are still short and drooping – she hasn’t even curled them)

  11. Cassie says:

Thirsty like any other. Since we are on this subject, Gisele has several pictures in her Instagram without makeup or with minimum of it. She looks good.

    • MelissaManifesto says:

      Exactly.
I see beautiful, striking women all the time without makeup while walking the streets, in the hospital, in church, even in jail where I did some missionary work. I don’t understand why this is such a shock.

  12. Naddie says:

It’s genuine, that’s what makes it cool. She doesn’t look good (hard boiled egg was spot on, as someone said above), but you can tell she’s beautiful.

  13. Bridget says:

Tyra will always measured high on the thirsty scale, but it’s part of her charm. She spent over a decade on ANTM overshadowing the contestants and accepting their worship, and it made it into a hit show.

“we need to write passive aggressive raps about each other now”

  14. Snowflake says:

Good for her. I think a show with those two would be fun to watch

  15. MelissaManifesto says:

    Oh I don’t know…

I am never obsessed with how a woman looks without makeup. Is this supposed to be empowering? I don’t wear much makeup, except lipstick that I absolutely love and a little powder because my skin is combo but much more on the oily side. Now it’s summer, I do sunscreen instead of powder and just blot. I don’t care how a woman looks with or without makeup. We are not the makeup we wear or don’t wear.

    • oneshot says:

maybe to you, it’s nothing. To a woman whose whole career and fame is based off the way she looks with makeup on, it’s a pretty big deal.

      • yellow says:

I think it’s a good trend (however annoying or “fake” at times) for the younger generation of females. Anything that breaks the mold of perceived unachievable perfection is great. For them and their self esteem, etc…

  16. Onyx says:

This is cool. She looks very young!

  17. Zigggy says:

I get a chuckle at how it’s SO “brave” for a woman to post a makeup free picture of herself.

    • msw says:

I am so bravely sitting in a restaurant right now with NO MAKEUP. Give me a medal! ha ha.

I know it isn’t the same, I don’t have thousands of people retweeting my bare face, but I take your meaning.

  18. Tacos and TV says:

I really like Tyra Banks. Her hustle is awesome and entertaining and she drinks her own Kool Aid. She’s great! The thirst is strong but in a good way. And she will always be beautiful. She is blessed.

Chrissy Teigen. Ugh. Not pretty at all (just my opinion. I really can’t stand her face) and super obnoxious. Her thirst is not the kind I get down with. At all. Go away!!

  19. oneshot says:

lol Tyra is thirsty but this is a legit makeup free picture in what looks like natural light (it’s very similar to the light I get when I take a selfie beside an open window in the morning – oops, I am thirsty too). Good on her.

I know it’s no big deal for any woman who routinely goes out in public without makeup, but for a woman who’s made a living off her image to do it, is actually pretty gutsy. And I love the pic – she’s clearly imperfect looking, but still beautiful.

  20. defaultgirl says:

She is far too rich to wear such cheap wigs. She looks great minus the Sally’s wigs. She needs to ask Beyonce/Wendy WILLIAMS (any of the reality stars EXCEPT NENE LEAKES) where they buys their wigs.

  21. cujokay says:

Neither is “cool”. Sick of both of them.

  22. iheartgossip says:

She’s always been thirsty. But, good for her.

  23. nicegirl says:

It is AWESOME!! I love Tyra. She is a real deal OG supermodel from the 90’s. I really like it when celebrities use their money to help others – have you heard of Tyra’s camp for girls?

  24. original kay says:

ok, so, I just read this.

maybe some don’t know, but back in the days of ANTM, there were rumours that jay manuel and tyra were fighting, a lot. something about he got too big for his britches and forgot she gave him his huge break into show business.

she fired him, and that was that.

fast forward to this year and… both now have new make up lines, BUT– his tag line, is.. wait for it.. “#nofilter”

I kid you not. also, he is a huge famewhore, along the lines of KimK. Who gets out of bed, gets ready, sees someone post a pic of “just out of bed!” on twitter, goes BACK TO BED to post the same pic and hashtag?! jay manuel. give me advil, please.

coincidence? maybe. but he rode her coattails for years, YEARS! and rumour was he treated her pretty badly.

ok, I am biased because I admire tyra and what she built for herself and I do not admire jay manuel. at all.
