Amal Clooney in ripped jeans, belly shirt & sleeveless tartan: tragic or cute?

139062PCN_AmalClooney15

I think Amal Clooney has been in London for a few weeks now. She was in NYC for months with George while he filmed Money Monster, then she and George took their love on the road to Japan, then to Kentucky. I think George went to Cabo without Amal while she traveled to London, which is still her homebase. Amal was seen yesterday doing some official barrister work – go here to see a photo of her polka-dot ensemble. Then Amal was seen today in much more casual street clothes.

I don’t have the IDs for anything Amal is wearing in these photos. I’m sure all of it is crazy-expensive, but I’m reminded again that Amal has terrible casual street-style. I actually like her business-wear – she has nice taste in suits and it’s not difficult for her to find flattering styles. I even sort of like/enjoy her evening wear and date-night clothing, just because she actually does try to mix it up (and fails sometimes). But her street style is the worst. This sleeveless coat paired with ripped jeans and a belly shirt? Honey, NO.

Amal was at the Supreme Court in London yesterday as part of the team arguing on behalf of the residents of the Chagos Islands. The residents were forced to move from their homes to make way for an American airbase. The legal team – which is not headed by Amal – has argued that the residents suffered a “significant injustice.” You can read more about the situation here.

Update: the sleeveless tartan thing is by Tome and it costs $1395. SERIOUSLY? It costs a lot to look this ridiculous.

The sleeveless look is not a good choice when you have extremely skinny arms imo.

    • HH says:

I can’t belive she insists on holding her arms in that position, pressed tightly to her sides.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@HH, who wrote: “I can’t belive she insists on holding her arms in that position, pressed tightly to her sides.”

I’m persuaded she does it to help deflect from her painfully thin arms. It was the first thing I noticed about her. She either has them pressed tightly against her sides or she turns them with palm out in an attempt to make them look fuller.

Heres something I don’t get. She is twice as thin as Angelina Jolie has ever been, and also has veiny arms and hands, yet no one ever calls her out on it (not that Amal being super thin matters to me one bit as she appears healthy … I’m just saying).

      • Kitten says:

@Emma – the JP Lover-First time clicking on an Amal thread? Her weight is consistently talked about in the comments section of every post about her.

        I suggest you scroll down.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

        @Kitten …

You know what I’m talking about.

      • qwerty says:

Angelina WAS thinner than her at one point, if not more.

      • Emma - the JP Lover says:

        @Qwerty …

        I rest my case.

      • Hazel says:

I think she just has narrow shoulders; her arms are just set closer to her body than someone with broader shoulders, like the Kate Middleton.

    • Megan says:

Bea Arthur is the only woman who has or ever will rock a sleeveless coat.

  2. Copycat says:

    Ewwww.. Look at her toes..

    • mary simon says:

It looks like two of them are flipped up over the other two. How can that even happen? Total ewwww.

      • Loulou says:

Lol It’s her second toe that’s longest and making the others look weird. Apparently a sign of intelligence according to feet “analysis”. She’s way too thin. She holds her arms in probably because she’s freezing since there’s no skin on those bones.

    • vauvert says:

Honestly?? What is she supposed to do, get cosmetic surgery on her toes??

      • LAK says:

Not that I recommend it nor think that she should, but yes, you can get surgery for your toes to make them prettier or to fit in shoes or straighten them. My sister had it done.

      • Jenna says:

Really? How much did THAT cost? That’s a pretty serious surgery to get for something that’s just aesthetic. That kind of surgery would cost a lot here in Canada, since it probably wouldn’t be covered by health care unless there was serious pain. I have toes like that and would love a surgery to fix them but apparently it requires taking off a knuckle or something. No thanks!

      • miss cane says:

Yes. A podiastrist. But Not for length They’re crooked. From her woredrobe I’m. sure she can afford it. If not insurance will cover her.

    • Megan says:

I think she has “Roman toes”, which means the second and third toes are the same length as the big toe.

    • Melissa says:

I think you can get this from years of wearing pointed toe heels.

      • Jenna says:

No, you’re born with it. Most of us can’t even wear heels comfortably because of them. That’s probably why she’s opted for peeptoes.

    • Suzanne says:

I noticed that too..that second toe is like a finger!

      • SideEye Sally says:

I agree – the second toes look like fingers and all of her toes are bent at an odd angle. She must have serious bunions on her big toes. Ouch….unless they are all numb from continuous wearing of high heels.

      • Jenna says:

They come in really handy when hands are full… just reach over and grab with the toes!

    • Jenna says:

I have this, they’re called Roman toes. Mine look exactly like hers. Not from wearing high heels– I can’t even wear them because of my toes 🙁 my feet slide down and crunch them and it hurts. I’m just as grossed out by my toes as you are! hahaha. I really hope the feet analysis people are right about it being a sign of intelligence lol

  3. littlemissnaughty says:

I kinda like her street style, it’s certainly more interesting than whatever she wears on the red carpet. Her business style is great but not exciting. I like her wacky outfits.

    • Franca says:

Me too! At least it’s fun to look at.

    • LadyMTL says:

I don’t hate her street style but I sometimes wonder how she puts together an outfit. I really love the bag and the coat she’s wearing here, but I would never have chosen a crop top and those shoes. (I’m indifferent about the jeans, though I think they would have looked better if she’d worn flats.)

I wonder if she does it on purpose because her work clothes are so much more conservative?

      • wolfpup says:

Back in Clooney’s day, putting opposites together was fashionable. I can remember wearing jeans and silk shirts, for example. She’s taking the look all the way, but I believe that it is hard to distinguish her style from George’s to a certain extent.

      • littlestar says:

Yeah, the coat is beautiful and would look great done all the way up over slim black pants/leggings. SHe doesn’t know how to style herself.

    • Melissa says:

I read that tartan is going to be very trendy this fall, and I am all over that! I love the print, just not the style of a sleeveless duster.

  4. Susan1 says:

The sleeveless vest looks like Victoria Beckham.

  5. Sugar says:

Good grief, does she love a camera or what? Clooney traded in his lower rent contract girls for a more expensive model.

    The shoes are hiddy.

    • springingforward says:

This. She has to have the paps on speed dial. Seriously.

      • boredblond says:

Her mom handles that Just like in nyc, she is dropped off near (not at) her destination to allow max pap time..Kool-aid, anyone?

    • kay says:

lol! sugar i was just coming to say i love the shoes…and i am not a heels fan (well, i love them but can’t walk in them)…they look sturdy. 🙂

  6. CG says:

This outfit totally looks like something Courteney Cox or Jennifer Aniston would have worn on Friends back in 1995! And that polka dot outfit is horrible.

  7. Carmen says:

The only person I’ve seen recently wearing ripped jeans who looked cute in them was Malia Obama and she’s 16 years old.

    • Dara says:

@Carmen, I was coming here to say exactly that. If you are old enough to drive to the mall yourself rather than having your mom give you a ride then your jeans should not gave gaping holes in them – no matter how much they cost.

      • Laura R says:

I think ripped jeans are fine! Everyone here (in the UK) is wearing them at the moment. The sleeveless coat thing should be burnt, however.

      • Carlottalove says:

Grow up, ripped jeans are always in style. You may not like them, but it’s true.

  8. Kaye says:

Her nose looks different. I’m one of those people who can’t see plastic surgery even when it’s specifically pointed out, though, so maybe I’m just seeing things.

    • LAK says:

Not sure if she’s had a recent nose job, but she definitely had one somewhere in 2013. There are pics on the Internet.

  9. Skyblue says:

I clicked on this post hoping I was going to see Amal in a sleeveless flannel tartan shirt Seattle grunge-style circa 1991. I was not expecting a sleeveless duster! She has amazingly bad taste!

    • BNA FN says:

She has amazing bad toes, omg!, the toes, the toes.

      • Lee says:

Yeah, she really should be a closed-toe-shoes-only girl. Her feet are kind of weirdly compelling – but not in a good way.

  10. Size Does Matter says:

Well, that’s the first sleeveless plaid trench coat I’ve ever seen. I hope it’s the last.

  11. Kiddo says:

Those shoes are hideous and her feet look awful in them. Let’s induct them into the Jen Affleck Hall of fame.

    • Size Does Matter says:

Those shoes must have resulted from the unholy coupling of a wayward pair of Leann Rimes’ hoof shoes and Jen Garner’s podiatry sandals.

  12. Dana m says:

This is a terrible look. Why would you wear a long table cloth vest? The only thing I like is the handbag.

    • hmmm says:

Well, it certainly screams, ‘Look at me!’

      • Dana m says:

Perhaps she plans to meet George for a lunch picnic and will conveniently use her vest as the Picnic blanket .

      • jen2 says:

@dana m: probably in their favorite cemetery where they love to stroll. At least it will be quiet.

  13. Samtha says:

Her street style is almost always off. Great hair, though.

  14. als says:

That vest is awesome. Too bad the combo is horrible. I think the vest and bag demand a less casual ensemble. This looks trashy, but maybe trashy was the point.

    • Judy says:

I think everything is awesome except the jeans. Had she worn black slacks I think the outfit would have been perfect. I like the sleeveless trench as a focal point but the jeans brings it down.

      • sills says:

Came here to say this, you read my mind. But I would have replaced the blue jeans with a black mini skirt. That vest is offbeat and cool, can definitely be made into an interesting look.

  15. Liberty says:

hahahah — even the guy in the car behind her is like, “WTH????”

Looks like something out of 1990s catalog for teen girls.

  16. billy-the-beetroot says:

She looks like she is 20 pounds underweight and completely obsessed with fame and being in the spotlight.

  17. Blythe says:

That bag is nice. I’ll give her that.

  18. Kitten says:

    God I love London.
    *sigh*

  19. cr says:

Individually, with the exception of the shoes, the pieces work. But together? No, just no.

  20. Dani says:

I’m very indifferent about her but my god I LOVE this entire outfit. Everything. The picture where her hair is blowing back is really top. She kind of looks like a fashion blogger.

  21. Jayna says:

I really love love love her evening gowns and also really like her business clothes and most of her date night clothes with George, with a few misses. Her street clothes are really hit or miss. Either full-on awful or great in kind of a quirky way. There seems to be no in between with her street clothes. I don’t hate this. Although, it’s not for me. But it looks really pulled together for a nice casual look. I also love that bag, as others have mentioned.

The polka dot ensemble for work, I can’t stare at it too long. I get dizzy. LOL I would have to see different angles to see if it looks nice or dated in the style of the outfit.

I hate to admit it, but I’ve come to look forward to seeing what Amal is wearing. I hadn’t realized it until we had a blackout of Amal for a few weeks. LOL

  22. Crumpet says:

    She looks great.

  23. 1979 says:

    She looks bloody awful.

  24. Melain says:

I hear Stockard Channing. “Look at me I’m Sandra Dee.”

  25. kri says:

I almost always hate those stacked heels. This time is no exception.

  26. Lorenzo says:

She looks like a walking identity crisis.

    • belle de jour says:

By day, I play a fancy but staid attorney in a stuffy place called an office. By night, I play the wife of a famous movie star on a long red carpet. But at lunch, I get to go out on the street and play my own rebellious teenage daughter for an hour. I love mixing up all the costumes in my closet… and in my head!

  27. G says:

I only say this because the internet won’t shut up about how AMAZINGGG!!! she is but i don’t think she’s pretty at all. She’s quite odd looking and she’s bordering on underweight.. I also don’t get how she can go everywhere with George and still hold down an official job. Don’t lawyers actually have to show up?

    • Camilla says:

I also don’t see how anyone can call her beautiful or even pretty. To me she looks like a man. For her style, it’s just so very LOOK AT MEEEE!!! I’m not sure she actually thinks it looks good, the important thing is to be seen and papped.

    • MaximeduCamp says:

@G, no you’re not the only one. I’ve generally refrained because “beauty” is so subjective, but I don’t see it with Amal. Part of it is due to her being so skinny. She’s hardly old, but old enough for that extreme to make her look harsh. And while she has great hair, I think it’s too much for her, even if she put on a bit of weight. She looks like she has a lot of hair (not just length, but thickness as well) and it and it’s overwhelming her and the length, in addition to her gaunt frame, makes her look haggard. I’m all for throwing out the rules, but there is a reason why some (not all) woman, shouldn’t wear long hair as they get older. Unless you have a fuller face or really strong bone structure, it can really age one. I, for one, would love to see her with shorter hair, even a pixie cut. I think it would be a huge improvement.

  28. Amide says:

    Tragic

  29. sigghh says:

    I like the outfit.

  30. Anare says:

The whole look is fug and try-hard. The plaid topper thing is the worst. Please burn that immediately.

  31. Elfie says:

I like skinny but she is scarily fragile to look at.

  32. Jaded says:

I really REALLY loathe ripped jeans. As much as I loathe drop crotch pants (side-eye to Gwen Stefani). For the uber-rich to have glommed onto “street” looks is just tasteless and ridiculous.

  33. FLORC says:

Her bag style is perfect. Even her business suits are pretty awful with a rare hit. She’s lost too much weight. Especially compared to pre George.

  34. AG-UK says:

Does she think it’s summer in London? in the 60’s too cold for belly shirts

  35. Rockin Robin says:

She looks dreadful 90% of the time. Her hair us fabulous, but that is where it ends. So over her.

  36. patricia says:

She has a bad case of the “longer second toe”
    http://www.buzzfeed.com/carolinekee/second-toe-so-long

  37. Penelope says:

She tries so very, very hard.

  38. RobN says:

Does she get a blow out every single morning before she leaves the house? Her hair fascinates me. I’ve got short, curly hair that just does what it wants, so it astounds me what other women must go through to have the big, cover of a romance novel hair, every single day.

  39. Tacos and TV says:

Am I alone in actually liking this look. I would wear it. But, I don’t like it on her at all. In my opinion she can’t dress. Seriously. She needs a stylist and I really want her to update that hair

  40. MoochieMom says:

I don’t hate the look. I hate the look on a well educated woman who would be my peer. If we were friends I would tell her to pit on something not so *searching for a word* Just no.

  41. A says:

That news anchor–Monica Lewinsky–hair/weave–got to go! It’s not flattering, it’s too big and poofy.

    • nicole says:

Its old fashioned and too dark. It would be a lot nicer, cut to her shoulder and rich brown in colour. It reminds me of the big puffy hair of the 90’s. She should also maybe use some straightners to flatten it out a little. Her hair just looks wiggy to me. She also definetly wears extensions. I wonder why she never wears it back in a ponytail or up.

  42. nicole says:

Does anybody notice thats her mother in the bmw behind, must of left her of at her apartment. I agree the look is too tryhard, but I like her handbag thats all. I think she trys to copy the style of those fashionista style bloggers miroslava duma or leila Yavari who she looks a little like. She doesnt have nice feet, I have noticed this anytime she wear open shoes.

    • lisa2 says:

I don’t think that is her mother.. looks too young. I actually like this look myself.. but about her feet.. that is genetics.. she can’t help that she has a long wonky toe.

  43. littlestar says:

OMG she dresses like she’s a 16 year old stuck in the 90s.

    HORRIBLE STYLE!

  44. lisa2 says:

She must have a HUGE closet

  45. siri says:

She seems to spend a LOT of time to put her outfits together, it almost always looks so try-hard. This one is a miss for me; she also looks quite manly here.

  46. Tracy says:

I think her outfit looks very cool. (So there.)

  47. Lizzieb says:

Her toes are gross. She should NEVER wear open toe shoes. Quite frankly she’s hideous on all levels, but I’ll just go with the toes for now.

    • Giddy says:

I know someone whose toes looked like this, and it was a result of her obsession with wearing heels with pointed toes. It squeezed her toes until they crossed each other. My friend had to have surgery to straighten her toes, and has had to change her shoe choices.

      • Lizzieb says:

Yes, all because some man said “wear high heels,” women ruin their feet. Don’t get me started on the hideousness of women’s fashions as decreed by some guy. I fall for it too.

    • siri says:

George himself stated quite a few times, how hideous he found women wearing too small shoes, or shoes with pointed toes when working as a shoe salesman ages ago, because they would ruin their feet for good- and now he has a wife who does exactly that…

      • Melanie says:

To siri: George actually said that? For some reason, I can’t imagine him making a comment like that about women’s feet.

  48. I Choose Me says:

    I like the sleeveless tartan.

    • sauvage says:

I don’t mind it, either, but I definitely would have paired it differently. I think it would go well with either a midi dress underneath, or with skinny jeans, ankle boots, and something with sleeves. Don’t even get me started on the belly shirt.

  49. krtmom says:

I think she’s stylish but she needs to gain some weight!

  50. canadiangirl says:

I’m sorry but her outfit is absolutely hideous to me 😐

  51. vavavoom says:

    It’s gingham, not tartan.

I like her style .. I think she’s dressing for herself, and likes to be fun. It’s refreshing… You go, girl.

  52. sauvage says:

Girlfriend looks like she’s straight from the 90s.

  53. Alize says:

    WTF with those shoes!??

  54. Bella245 says:

I’d pay that much for a bag but not for sleeveless plaid coat. Fugly.

  55. Blue says:

Her casual style is tragic pretty much always. Great hair, it must take hours to make it look so perfect every day.

  56. mememe says:

TRAGIC. She has the worst style of any celebrity I can think of.

  57. Nimbolicious says:

It always strikes me as weird when it seems that someone’s whole raison d’être is to be fab ‘n’ papped. I expect it from reality stars and wannabes but not from the Unicorn of International Brilliance who is constantly portrayed as Above It All.

    • Suzanne says:

Well said….LOL! Unicorn of International Brilliance. LOLOLOLO!

    • Cam says:

It’s really surprising how much she just loves the cameras. You’d think she’d have better things to think about. I guess war criminals and human rights victims are a pretty dull and unglamorous lot.

  58. maggie says:

    Unique styling! Love it.

  59. lisa says:

who wears half shirts to work? does she work at a carnival?

  60. Lo8 says:

Her second toe is going to give me nightmares.

  61. Twinkle says:

She’s definitely using a stylist. Her RC style and her street style are schizo.

  62. emma says:

    Love her and her clothing.

  63. Mary says:

Does the gingham vest give anyone else Audrey Hepburn vibes? Obviously with completely different pieces (keep the bag).

Plus, you know how slender women look really good in clothes? She’s not slender.

She looks anorexic to me. I think she is beyond slender or thin, or even beyond skinny. I think it’s not healthy, and I think she is purposely overly skinny. I think she thinks it looks good. I bet she looks skeletal without clothes. I think she’s pro-Ana. I’d bet she follows pro-Ana diets. I think she has an eating disorder. I think there’s something going on.

Hope and Prayers for you, Amal.

  64. Amy says:

I love it! Not sure what the fuss is all about.

  65. Hazel says:

Gotta say, I love her fabulous oddness in styling, just love it. Love it in the same way I love Gwen Stefani’s style, although no one but Gwen would ever look good in her style. Either way, much more interesting than the boring Duchess of C. And that longer big-toe thing–all I have to say is, I’m glad no one is ever going to take close-up pictures of my feet….

  66. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

I don’t think the coat is tartan. I think it’s officially called Huge-Ass Gingham Check print.
