Sofia Vergara & Reese Witherspoon blame each other for failure of ‘Hot Pursuit’

FFN_CinemaCon_Stars1_KMFF_042115_51717874

Sofia Vergara and Reese Witherspoon made a big deal about their wild & crazy friendship while they promoted their turd of a film, Hot Pursuit, a few months ago. I actually understand why the film happened – take “America’s Sweetheart” Reese ad the most popular woman on TV and put them together in a girls’ road-trip/comedy and it could have worked. But it didn’t. The reviews were terrible and the film died a swift and painful death at the box office. So now Radar says that Sofia and Reese’s friendship has died a swift death too.

It was supposed to be a buddy comedy, but when Hot Pursuit flopped at the box office, it turned Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara against each other! Witherspoon and Vergara had reportedly become inseparable friends as they worked together on the film — but things changed after the movie only barely made back its $35 million production budget.

“Sofia and Reese have turned the movie’s failure into a brutal blame game,” an insider told RadarOnline.com. “Reese blames Sofia’s accent and ‘irritating laugh,’ while Sofia blames Reese for not being sexy or funny enough.”

As if things weren’t awkward enough, both women are represented by Witherspoon’s husband, agent Jim Toth! “Jim is desperately trying to broker peace between them, but then they start accusing him of playing favorites! He can’t win.”

The actresses are reportedly ‘devastated’ by the monetary and critical failure. Both women stood to make real career gains if the film had been successful. Witherspoon and Vergara were both producers on the project. Additionally, Vergara was hoping that Hot Pursuit could transform her from a television star to a silver screen starlet.

“Sofia has a love/hate relationship with Modern Family,” the source said. “Its shooting schedule is long and difficult, but if she had a real movie career, she could leave… Sofia was hoping to have some kind of leverage for next season’s contract negotiations, but because Hot Pursuit was such a turkey, she needs the show more than ever.”

[From Radar]

Is the Modern Family shooting schedule really that arduous? I mean… it’s a half-hour sitcom on network TV. Even if there are long hours (doubtful?), it’s an ensemble where six actors carry the weight and the network is going out of their way to make the actors happy. I tend to think Sofia is in a better position overall – she’s still the star of one of the biggest network comedies around, she has tons of side projects and of course she’ll get a chance to do more movies. But Reese? I don’t know. I guess we’re supposed to believe that this past year has been so incredible for her (and she did get an Oscar nomination), but it feels like she’s still struggling? Anyway, Reese and Sofia should stop blaming each other and blame the screenwriter. The script sounded like it was terrible.

Ladies! Ladies! Please, there’s plenty of blame to go around. You’re both right, you were both terrible.

    • sally says:

However, I do find Reese blaming sofia’s accent as really offensive. Sofia naturally has an accent because English is not her first language. Plus, I’m sure the director told her to AMP up her accent for the role. So why blame the accent of all things?

      • Jen says:

Because she’s Reese: An AMERICAN CITIZEN, DAMMIT!!!

      • FingerBinger says:

A director doesn’t have to tell Sofia to amp up her accent. She does that all on her own. She’s done it for years.

      • Hudson Girl says:

None of this story is believable. Radar is so often full of sh!t and it ticks me off that so many savvy gossip readers here seem to lack discrimination and comment on a story like it’s fact.
“They’re women so they MUST be fighting and pointing fingers…” 😡
Reese knew Sofia’s accent before casting.
Both ladies are great actors. It was the screenplay that sucked. They should have had it rewritten or worked on a completely different one together.

      • Tessa says:

She’s like the Fran Drescher of Columbian accents. She’s annoying and shrill on purpose.

      • Miss M says:

        It was very very offensive.

      • FLORC says:

Have you heard her younger sister speak? It’s worse and very exaggerated.

      • Bridget says:

Have any of you guys seen Chef? Sofia toned down her accent a lot, and it was quite unfamiliar on the ears 🙂

      • suziekew says:

Does anyone really believe the hogwash from these trash gossip rags? I’m fairly certain there is no love lost between the two but I’m doubtful they would either resort to calling out each other over petty issues.
I wish people would quit giving relevance to these gossip rags.

      • Shijel says:

Uh, I’m probably wrong in this, but hasn’t Sofia herself said that at this point her English is relatively accent-free but she keeps it up because it’s her shtick and helps her to capitalize on her niche, that she’s intentionally playing into the stereotype because at least it gets her jobs? I read this a few years ago so i’m grossly paraphrasing on something dubious at best.

      • zwella ingrid says:

In general, calling out someone’s accent is wrong, but I’m going to be honest here. I didn’t see the movie, but even watching the trailers, I found her accent annoying and out of place? I never ever find her accent annoying on Modern Family. Why is that? What would have made the difference? You all say the screen play was bad, and that’s probably correct. I trust your judgement on that. But could Sofia have been miscast? I don’t know. I love her in Modern Family. Reece has never been an actress that I like. But I can’t say more since I didn’t see the movie.

      • mary simon says:

        I’m with Sofia. It’s Reese’s fault.

    • Amy Tennant says:

      LOL!

    • holly hobby says:

No Sofia’s accent isn’t that pronounced. I saw Chef and she was less irritating in that movie because she used her real voice. I do think she plays up the accent on Modern Family and in this flop of a movie because someone told her that’s what people like. Far from the truth actually.

Martin Yan’s accent is also fake. If anyone remembers him before Yan Can Cook exploded in PBS, he actually didn’t have one.

  2. Jen says:

    +10000000

…Dammit. I meant this as a reply to Original Cyn. I need more coffee.

  3. Shambles says:

I officially declare today to be “grown women who act like 7th graders” day. Even Ben Affleck admitted that Gigli sucked. Both women would have been much better served by shrugging it off as a “sh!t happens,” situation, and moving on with the types of projects they’re both better suited for. Turning this into a cat fight doesn’t help anyone, especially all the working women who are never taken seriously because women are just “catty” and “bitchy” and “emotional.”

    • Kitten says:

“An uptight and by-the-book cop tries to protect the outgoing widow of a drug boss as they race through Texas pursued by crooked cops and murderous gunmen.”

I just cannot believe a movie with this premise wouldn’t be box office gold.
I’m shocked I tell you, shocked!

      • Shambles says:

Excuse me while I retreat to my chambers to rethink life, because the failure of this misunderstood piece of art means that everything I know is a lie.

It would have been a hell of a lot funnier if Sofia was the cop and Reese was the widow.

      • BlueNailsBetty says:

Right? I really expected this to be a trilogy.

        /sarcasm

    • Bridget says:

Reese is a pro who has weathered her share of bombs… and yet a pretty small movie like that failing is supposed to make her lose her sh%t? And the line about Toth being accused of playing favorites is gross.

      • Shambles says:

I don’t think she’s losing her sh!t per se, but I could definitely see Mean Girl Reese throwing some b!tchiness at Sofia. That’s not to say she’s not a pro, and you’re definitely right in that she’s weathered her fair share of failures. But I could certainly see her making a snide remark about Sofia’s accent to one of her girlfriends. Either way, whether this comes from the women themselves or from some author of tabloid fiction, the whole thing is completely gross. ITA on the line about Jim playing favorites, as if they have to compete for his attention. Ugh.

      • Bridget says:

Ha, I think we all take it as a given that Reese is making snide remarks about someone.

      • Shambles says:

lol. You said it. She’s probably making snide remarks about both of us right now.

      • Bridget says:

She probably hates my hair 🙂

      • zwella ingrid says:

It might make you lose your sh*t to be nominated for an academy award and then turn around and make a crap movie. But then Reece surely knew this was a crap movie??

  4. georgia says:

Of course the women are fighting and blaming each. Lord knows two women can’t ever get along and work together harmoniously.

    • Sugar says:

Exactly. This is fiction dreamed up by tabloid writers because it plays into the stereotypes of catty women who are jealous of each other. So gross.

      • jen2 says:

Only thing missing is the man they are fighting over. Tabloid and gossip blog heaven!!

      • Liberty says:

no — it’s there — Jim Toth, their agent and Reese’s husband! he is caught between two warring female wildcats with long claws in a golden pit of money fire and hair-pulling!

Shakespeare had it right: all actors should be men! Because women temper things stuff! Because! (And read Radar next week! And maybe, rent the movie to see what you missed and why our two fiery temptresses are angry!)

    • Happy21 says:

Yup! I agree all day long. I don’t think that they are blaming each other at all. Puh-lease. Sofia doesn’t think Reese is sexy enough…WTF! I cannot ever imagine Sofia saying something like that. Stupid. God forbid they remain friends amidst a flop at the box office. The media loves to pitch two women against each other.

    • deehunny says:

yes so fake, look at the reasoning which is of course their stereotypes… “reece, not young and sexy enough, sofia, fake accent and annoying laugh”

Some business ventures are successful and some fail. women that age and successful know how to take their losses as well as wins.

  5. vauvert says:

Blame the writers, sure, but as producers didn’t they have a say in the script?
And honestly, I find both over rated actresses. Haven’t cared for anything Reese starred in in a long time, and I stopped watching MF this year – biggest reason being how grating I find Sofia and the tired shtick of “look, I am so sexy with my crazy accent, high heels and bold lipstick.”

    • Esmom says:

I’m with you on all your comments. Although I stopped watching MF even sooner than you, for the very same reason. She ruined the show for me, despite flashes of brilliance early on.

    • Debbie says:

I’m going to agree with you here. They made a bad movie, they started with a bad script, did nothing to fix it and then relied on their shtick to try and sell it.

What they’ve missed is people are tied of their shtick. And honestly neither one are killer actresses. Reese is talented but please Sofia is yeah nope. I stopped watching modern family because of her ott performance, well and the terrible writing of the show overall.

    • Amy Tennant says:

edited, never mind, I said something stupid.

  6. Kitten says:

I honestly don’t know which one of these women I dislike more.
They’re both incredibly annoying and unfunny so I guess I’ll have to make it a tie.

    • j.eyre says:

*holds a coin posed to flip* shall we decide?

    • Triple Cardinal says:

      Wait…things will get even better.

Witherspoon will do “Big Little Lies” for HBO and will produce and star with…Nicole Kidman.

I can’t wait to see these two pros throw down.

  7. Bell says:

Sophia plays the same character in everything! I would not
    call that acting

  8. Toni says:

YOU MEAN THEY’RE NOT REALLY FRIENDS???? IT WAS ALL FOR PUBLICITY? The Shock of it!

    • lisa2 says:

I was going to say the exact same thing. EVERY single time two women are in a film together we have to get how they have become BFFs and love each other to pieces.. They have to hug each other and kiss and grab body parts.. Talk about how this person is the person they would love to (fill in the space). I’m over these fake friendships.. OVER them. You can work with someone and it doesn’t have to equal you being best friends. I’m not best friends with everyone I work with.

too over the top.. and to me it doesn’t make me want to see the film. If you are doing all the action off camera why do I need to pay to see the it on screen.

Sofia has a lot of things going on..but she wants to be a Movie Star. Reese seems to be either trying to be sexy or as she said she wants to be an Action star. Neither is right for her. Like that last movie she did where the 2 guys were fighting over her. Reese is attractive’ but nobody bought that premise.

      • Toni says:

“If you are doing all the action off camera why do I need to pay to see the it on screen.”

        Great point!

  9. j.eyre says:

Shoot, I was all excited to see this movie but if Reese isn’t sexy and Sophia has an accent, I just don’t know if I want to anymore.

  10. Bridget says:

Isn’t it nice that these two little ladies have Jim Toth there to help them understand how the business works? Bitches be crazy, amirite?

    • Amy Tennant says:

Thank you! That was some misogynistic reporting (not on the part of Celebitchy, mind)

  11. Katie says:

Sophia relies waaaay too much on her looks instead of learning the craft of acting. Even the best of comedians were trained at one point. She should take some pointers from Helen Mirren who relied on her sexiness when she was younger, but had good solid acting training. Instead of manipulating every wrinkle, she honed in on her skills. She’s now more honored for being a true actress and Oscar winner at the age of 69. Instead of waiting for a darn good script to come along, Reese seems to be taking anything that comes along. She should take some pointers from fellow Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis, take a rest, wait for a darn good script to come along and WOW em! She deserves the best material but she needs to be patient for it to come along or better yet start writing her own. Maybe even consider Broadway theater which always increases ones skills no matter how long you’ve been acting.

    • lisa2 says:

I don’t think it is fair to say that every actor needs to be a Daniel Day Lewis or Helen Miren. Variety is the spice of life. You need all range of actors; otherwise we would only have serious movies.. and that would be boring

      • Katie says:

True. But in Sophia’s case she puts a huge empathisis on staying young instead of whats necessary to keep the directors calling for your talent. If you’re only skimming the surface of your persona, there’s always going to be that person who’s prettier and younger-the next BIG thing. That’s why a lot of the “sex symbols” seem the freak out and loose perspective of things as they get older.

      • lisa2 says:

        @katie.. I see your point..

I think she like many think because something worked on their TV show/sitcom that they can ride it to the big screen.

I have said it before that it is harder for a TV actor to transition to the big screen than it is for a Big Screen actor to go and do TV.. When you do a tv show ever week you take on those character traits. Sofia in the trailers was just her TV character put in a different situation. She plays that part and sadly she plays it so well she can’t play anything else. There are so many examples to name that have that same problem. Some make that transition. other just can’t

      • zwella ingrid says:

        lisa2–
I think that is where the accent comes into play. If Sophia had a toned down or non-existant accent for this part, we might have had a chance of seeing her character as something other than her reassigned MF character.

    • EM says:

Vergara is mediocre. She is like Pia Zadora without the bank rolling hubby.

      • mary simon says:

Lol Thought I was the only one who remembers Pia Zadora. I remember walking out on her movie “Butterfly” less than halfway thru it. She was so tedious, even with all the nudity.

I think Sofia has more going on than Pia Zadora ever did. Sofia is actually beautiful, and she does have the aura of a movie star. She’s out and about and working – she makes me think of Fran Drescher’s staying power back during The Nanny, or even Joan Collins on Dynasty. In your forties you relax a little and you know how to work it. The confidence and the sly, campy humor – especially when you still look great. I don’t know much about her, but I’ve seen her interviewed a few times and I thought she was appealing and funny.

    • Aren says:

Sofia’s career is very long, she began doing TV decades ago and was quite famous. So I think this is “it” for her, this is what she worked her whole life to achieve, her biggest role, the crossover most actors only dream of.

In all honesty, everybody thought Sofia was over, she’s only famous because of her physical appearance, and she’s not in her 20’s or 30’s anymore.

So, I don’t think her goal is to be an actress, after MF is over I think she’s going to invest in some kind of business, retire and enjoy being rich.

  12. Ronda says:

I dont think they should blame the screenwriter, they shuld have turned down the script if it sucked. Both women have enough power ( more than any writer in Hollywood) to get the better scripts and if not then simply dont be part of that movie, they are not starving actresses needing a job.

  13. Angelica says:

Please everyone shoot me for saying this but Sophia should go the Mariah Carey route in ‘Precious’. I can’t stand Mariah’s persona, the sexed up diva hair, makeup, and demeanor, but I was pleasantly surprised when I saw her in that movie. She should play a character where she’s on the outside, with good information on a crime or and unfortunate wife or something. She’s not gonna convince us otherwise because she’s showed zero range in her ability to act. Even Witherspoon, who I’m not a fan of, has been the sweet one, the ditz, the wife, the southern belle, nothing extraordinary, but enough to insure that she can regularly get parts in HW. Unless there are ample parts of “vixen prances into a room and yells in and accent with a low cut shirt” ready for her in an award worthy movie, she ain’t going anywhere. Lol.

  14. EM says:

Vergara is not for the big screen. She is a TV actress.

  15. Chinoiserie says:

I think Sofia gained from this film a little but anyway even if it was a huge flop since now she can at least can say she has starred in a film. But this is pretty bad for Reese.

    • Tiffany says:

But it made back its money. While the profit was not sky high, there was not a loss.

This was a lesson for both and they will still get work and produce.

  16. Yoohoo says:

I don’t believe this. I think it’s the typical story of pitting two women against each other because women are catty.

    • pinetree13 says:

THANK YOU! Can’t believe I had to scroll to comment 16 before someone said this. Obviously a typical made up sexist story ‘let’s pit two famous women against each other because women are ALWAYS super catty and juvenile, right brah?” The fact that so many commenters are super-quick to believe it saddens me. :S

  17. BlueNailsBetty says:

Okay, let’s get serious for a moment.

Reese “I’m an American Citizen!” Witherspoon vs. Arianna “I Hate America!” Grande in a cage match: who would win???

  18. Dr.Funkenstein says:

Hey, they’re hardly the only two who’ve been in a turkey recently. It’s no big deal. Reese may be feeling the heat because she’s aging, but Sofia has work for now. She’s never going to be be big box office. They took a shot, it didn’t work out.

  19. Anon says:

Reese. Hmmmm enough said. Just can’t

    • Caz says:

Yep. Witherspoon is a reason to not see a movie. She’s had her time in the sun. Mediocre talent.

  20. Courtney says:

I have a hard time believing Modern Family’s shooting schedule is THAT bad. It’s 22 minutes, and has a large ensemble cast. It’s not an hour long drama with Sofia in every scene. Get your sitcom checks while you still can, Sofia. And no1curr about Reese.

    • Dara says:

@Courtney- exactly so. There’s a lot of reasons why you usually don’t see an actor bail out of a sitcom before the series ends the way you do with long-running dramas and why they are considered the brass ring for a working actor – less grueling than an hour long drama, usually a decent-sized ensemble to help carry the workload, a summer hiatus so you can get another gig if you want, if the show is popular it will run in syndication for years which means more pay checks, etc. etc.

I don’t believe for a second that Vergara wants out of Modern Family, that show is her gravy train and the only reason why any of even know who she is.

  21. Sammy says:

Oh, no, no and no. Sofia has a horrible voice in my opinion.

I have no problem with her accent, but her voice is a true assault on my ears.

It’s like listening to nails on blackboard and her laugh is bad too. Lucky she has a nice rack.

I enjoy accents, it makes me listen harder to the person to make sure I catch everything they are saying. And full disclosure, I have an accent too.

Reese had a pretty good year with her Oscar nom and producing Gone Girl, especially after her drunken arrest video all over the web. Her kids must be so proud.

She seems like the worst control freak type of a person.

    • pwal says:

I think that we are back to where we were a couple of years ago when it was accepted that a little Sofia goes a long way. I remember when I got my fill of her- it was when she had those K-Mart commercials for her clothing line, and I’m saying this as a person who didn’t watch Modern Family – AT ALL. She apparently didn’t get the memo, since she’s trying make herself one-half of a supercouple, despite Joe not wielding any kind of power, much less her. We have the Head and Shoulders commercials, her ex, kicking up a stink about the frozen embryos, Modern Family, and her award show appearances. Seriously, it wouldn’t be a bad idea if she have a seat for a bit, since she’s overexposed.

And Reese… I know it is unreasonable to feel this way, but I can’t look at her and think about how easily she got off regarding her behavior towards that cop, while people who have done much less (i.e. did not confront a cop) got killed anyway. I can’t help it.

Meanwhile, Melissa McCarthy’s Spy is doing well, and IMO should’ve done much better because it is actually funny. Mind you, the way it was promoted was pretty odd. It didn’t play up the ensemble cast, which had some familiar faces stretching themselves, especially Jason Statham. and some relatively new faces (mainly to American audiences?) like Miranda Hart and Peter Seranawicz who added much to the film. And Melissa McCarthy was charming and funny, the very things that many fans were afraid she would lose if kept playing bizarre, broad characters.

    • Rockin Robin says:

100% agree. Her voice is awful. She overdoes it for show and its purely dreadful.

  22. Kelly says:

I don’t buy that story, just trying to pit them against each other

  23. Rockin Robin says:

They both suck. Not surprised this movie failed. I cannot stand Sofia’s Voice and Reese just grates my nerves since her “do you know who I am” arrest.

  24. Lucy2 says:

I’m surprised how many people are believing this. It’s Radar and their “sources” first of all, plus the tabloids are always trying to pit women, especially female costars, against each other.
Yes the film was a flop and both should have seen that going in. It’s disappointing that Reese went to this from Wild, which was really very good, and that this is what Sophia chose for her first big starring film role.

  25. Marianne says:

“Both women stood to make real career gains if the film had been successful.” See, I’m gonna call BS on that. Like her or not, but Reese is already a big star and has had real career gains. Its not like she really needed this movie to be successful.

Sofia sure, I could buy that a little bit more since she really is known for Modern Family and not much else.

  26. Jaded says:

Ummm…Sofia….Charo called. She wants her shtick back.

  27. Nik says:

Two drunk annoying women are to blame. I couldn’t stand another interview let alone the movie
