Jamie Bell on child stardom & why he’s not in rehab: ‘I probably should be’

Jamie Bell

Jamie Bell keeps a low profile unless he’s actually promoting a movie. The paps haven’t nabbed gossip-worthy photos of him since his early 2014 divorce from Evan Rachel Wood. He’s actually a “serious” actor who isn’t into working an image. I remember being impressed by his performance in Snowpiercer, which was filmed just as his marriage crumbled. And I always forget Jamie is a former child actor (he appeared in Billy Elliot at age 13). Right now, he’s pushing his role in the Fantastic Four. Comic book fans weren’t clamoring for a reboot, but it may make money anyway. Jamie plays the Thing with a lot of CGI help.

Bell has a new feature in Interview magazine, and Robert Pattinson did the interrogating. This talk reveals more about Sparkles than it does about Jamie. Sparkles bursts into the phone conversation with a “Let’s not talk about any of your work. Let’s only talk about your personal life. Your crack usage. Who are you f***ing? Okay?” Oh, Sparkles. Jamie never answer those questions, but here are some excerpts:

Playing the Thing: “[Y]ou won’t see my face at all. Oh, no, you will. He’s a human being before he turns into Thing. But there is certainly something about the anonymity of the character that is kind of intriguing. I like that. I think your anonymity has been somewhat jeopardized. I also think the idea of me playing that role, a six-foot-eight rock creature, was kind of bizarre. As you know, I’m a five-foot-seven, rather squat Englishman. All of that combined was kind of interesting.”

He doesn’t like his work: “I don’t really enjoy watching any of my work at all. To get me to sit down in a screening, you almost have to nail me to the f***ing floor. I just never want to watch anything. I’m proud that I’m still working. But there’s not one thing that I can put my finger on and say, ‘That is my greatest achievement. That’s my proudest moment.’ That’s so tricky to me.”

How he avoid the child-actor cliché: “I am quite unashamedly Jamie all the time. I think that definitely helped even in terms of sanity — not in terms of career, just in terms of keeping your head, especially when you start so young. I get asked a lot in interviews, you know, “How come you’re not, like … in rehab or anything?” I probably should be. The pitfalls of child actors … It was drilled into me when I was a kid: ‘You have to be you, and you must be the best version of yourself.’ I think a mantra I always told myself is, ‘No matter how many times somebody pitches the ball at you, if you swing every time, eventually one of them is going to connect.’ Being yourself and persistence are two things that became my daily mantras, I suppose. I think my demons are my demons, and we all have them, and we work on them.”

[From Interview Magazine]

Sparkles ends the interview by calling Jamie, “the lost humble orphan lamb.” That’s just amazing. You know what I’d like to watch? An interview where Robert Pattinson drills Robert Pattinson for answers. Jamie plays it close to the sleeve and never lets loose with answers, which is fine, but it doesn’t make for a good pull quote. Sparkles has been though enough with the press to know what the people want to hear. He’s hilarious.

This Fantastic Four reboot will be a disaster, right?

Jamie and Evan Rachel were super cute. I think he was really cut up about their split, which seemed to be instigated by her.

    Fantastic Four looks ridiculous.

    • Rainbow says:

Evan Rachel is only 27? I just googled it and I am surprised,I thought she would be around 35. She looks young but it seems like she’s around Hollywood forever, especially with all the fuss about her relationship with Marilyn Manson.

      • teacakes (formerly oneshot) says:

It’s at least partly because of her styling – at 19, she was dressing like a 35 year old to try and keep up with Manson.

And it was even creepier because she dressed and made herself up almost exactly like Dita von Teese. Who is very beautiful and carries off that style very well, but it’s not for everyone.

  2. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Thus interview is the first thing that’s made me even interested in that movie. I’m not sure how good it’s gonna be but I do appreciate hearing his answers, for him and Michael B. Jordan I’ll consider supporting it.

  3. Lori says:

I want to like that show Jamie has called Turn. I’ve tried several times to watch it………..I can’t get into it no matter how much I like Jamie. Its just Awful.

    • Krista says:

I’m with you. My husband really likes it, but I just watch it for the Jamie.

    • renee28 says:

Same here. I had to bow out half way through the 1st season.

    • MrsNix says:

      I love Turn. LOVE it!

      • Jenn B says:

I love Turn too! It just got renewed for season 3. My husband and I watch it together. Usually we can’t watch anything to do with war or intel because he is a retired Marine, a historian, and everything is always wrong. He shut off Homeland ten minutes into it because they referred to Gunnery Sergeant as just Sergeant.

    • A. Key says:

I love Turn!! It’s a great show and the cast is doing an amazing job!!

  4. Beth No. 2 says:

I remember watching Snowpiecer and thinking the guy looks so familiar… then I realized he was Billy Elliot!

On another note, do we need another Fantastic Four movie? (Answer: No). Miles Teller impressed me a lot in Whiplash last year and I want to see him in better material.

    • manta says:

Try Rabbit hole if you’ve never watched it. The main focus at the time was on Kidman and her Oscar worthy performance (rightly so), but Teller was heartbreaking in it.
I understand many actors want the extra big blockbusters, the bigger cheques, the big exposure but I often feel they should stick to more interesting (and more rewarding?) choices. Teller hasn’t done anything yet more challenging than Rabbit Hole or Whiplash, why quitting that path ?

    • kimmy says:

Michael B. Jordan in Fruitvale Station? I hoped for more for him too. He is a fantastic actor.

    • Skedaddle says:

I actually think he’s made good choices. The Spectacular Now is a fantastic movie and has him channelling that affable charm he perfected in those terrible comedies (that he probably had to do for money) with a much more mature and realistic take. The Divergent movies weren’t good but he raised his profile with them and got great reviews with his performance, especially considekrng the limited material. His upcoming movies look interesting too, he’s doing a boxing movie that should hopefully be good. He’s almost 30, which is when actors start getting good roles it seems, and he’s well regarded. I think he’ll do well. I know a lot of people here think he’s arrogant but I think he’s probably not a bad person, just confident with a twitchy sense of humor, and he’s a fantastic actor.

Love Jamie too. I was not interesting in seeing f4 at all until I heard the cast—they’re all great!

  5. Kiki says:

I having now in my 30’s, can you call me a cougar when I find Jamie quite handsome. Is Something is wrong with me?

    • teacakes (formerly oneshot) says:

eh, he’s 29 himself. You’re no cougar for him, not at 30some!

  6. femputer says:

has anyone seen him in nymphomaniac vol 2? he was amazing. completely changed my mind on him as an actor. he’s kind of a diminutive looking guy but he was very commanding in that role.

  7. teacakes (formerly oneshot) says:

Snowpiercer was fantastic, great performances by everyone even if I took a while to realise just who Tilda Swinton was playing, ha.

Jamie Bell is so low-key I didn’t even realise he’d divorced ERW until I read it in the post above. And quite a few former child stars have turned out ok so far, through what was likely a combination of good parenting and their own will – him, Daniel Radcliffe, Zendaya, Saoirse Ronan…..good job, kids.

    • G says:

Kristen Stewart has traversed the child star > crazy intense fame extremely well, regardless of what tabloids and trolls like to say. I feel like the tabloids were willing Kristen to have a nervous breakdown or something, but she’s like ‘nah, i’m good’. Zendaya and Saoirse have been able to grow up in relative privacy. When do you ever see Saoirse besides when she is working? The benefit of not being American. You cannot compare their experience with Twimania. Even Daniel and Emma had a lot of privacy as minors in the UK.

  8. Tig says:

I thought the interview was great! Enjoyed both the questions and answers. And, c’mon, you know the intro question was a joke. I loved him in Billy Elliott, and will take everyone’s word for Snowpiercer- have tried it twice and just can’t get interested.

  9. Dara says:

If this kid met my minimum height requirement – which is more rigid than my minimum age requirement – I would be all over him. He’s the bees knees as far as I’m concerned.

  10. suziekew says:

What happened to this interview being a friendly get-to-together between two really good friends CB? Rob Pattinson was asked to interview JB because they are friends and can joke with one another. CB failed big time to show this as what it was…..a funny, “tongue-in-cheek” interview, which ultimately revealed many career topics about Jamie Bell that most did not know. So for JB it was a win win.
