Taylor Swift & Nicki Minaj got into a Twitter beef over the 2015 VMA nominations

The 2015 VMA nominations came out yesterday. I strongly suspected that no one would really care – I mean, they’re just the VMAs, right? – but in case you were wondering, Taylor Swift obviously got the most nominations with nine, followed by Ed Sheeran with six noms. You can see the full list of nominations here.

Sprinkled in the nominations are multiple noms for Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” video, a video so ass-tastic that NSFW-tags around the world simply gave up. Minaj’s main complaint seemed to be that “Anaconda” wasn’t nominated for Best Choreography or Best Video of the Year, so she took to Twitter to discuss:

If I was a different “kind” of artist, Anaconda would be nominated for best choreo and vid of the year as well.

Ellen did her own anaconda video and did the #choreo lol. Remember her doing that kick 😩. Even mtv did a post on the choreo @MTV remember?

U couldn’t go on social media w/o seeing ppl doing the cover art, choreo, outfits for Halloween…an impact like that & no VOTY nomination?

If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year

I’m not always confident. Just tired. Black women influence pop culture so much but are rarely rewarded for it.

[From Twitter]

So Taylor Swift – who has quickly become the patron saint of young, white feminists who believe that feminism is defined as “stop saying mean things about Taylor Swift!!” – decided to join in. In Swifty’s defense, Minaj’s criticism was pointed and yes, it was directed at Swift… and other white artists. Swifty tweeted this at Minaj, plus Minaj’s response:

After that, Minaj just continued to complain about Swifty and the white-centric media:

They’re not missing the point, they’re just attempting to overshadow the point. Oldest trick in the book.

Nothing I said had to do with Taylor. So what jabs? White media and their tactics. So sad. That’s what they want.

Ryan posted a headline of Taylor saying she loves & supports me. But not me saying the same to her. Lol. Their headline says I took a “jab”?

I’m so glad u guys get to see how this stuff works. Taylor took her music off spotify and was applauded. We launched Tidal & were dragged.

[From Minaj’s Twitter]

My take? While Minaj didn’t name Swift initially, she was totally referring to Swift and Minaj needs to simply own that and make that argument, because that argument is utterly valid: everything Saint Swifty does is blessed by the white-centric media and Swifty is seen as the “wholesome one” to Minaj’s sexed-up, NSFW performance/song/video. By playing coy – all while retweeting people dragging Swifty – Minaj looks petty, like it’s a personal beef instead of a larger problem in the music industry. Now that being said, Swifty would have looked better if she had simply ignored Minaj’s Twitter storm, or if Swifty had agreed with Minaj and joined her in making the argument that black performers are treated differently, etc.

Oh, and Kim Kardashian got dragged into it too, because she posted this (and then deleted it) during Swifty and Minaj’s beef:

kim1

Except that Kim was just posting photos from her Vogue Espana photoshoot and giving all the photos captions. She claimed that she had no idea what was going down on Twitter. Do you believe her?

Who gets to define feminism? Who gets to choose who is a right feminist or not? Questions for thought…

Celebrities complaining as a whole is always maddening to me. In this instance, we can discuss white feminism, racism, pop culture influences, but these are not pressing, relevant social issues just nonsensically dumb Twitter battles between too very privileged women. There are been racism and sexism against women of color in the music industry, but that is not what is happening here.

Yes, Taylor Swift is a media darling, obsessed with sharing her private life, hypocrite pretending that she is not, that is how her image has been crafted and it has sold well. Nicki came out of a loud-mouth, ridiculously-dressed, beautiful doll in a time where people were crazy about loud-mouthed, ridiculously-dressed, beautiful dolls. It has worked for her and has too sold well. People with enough common sense don’t believe in neither, but take them for what they are: two extremely wealthy successful women that are products of the infamous pop cash cow. The end.

    • Ronda says:

“Who gets to define feminism? Who gets to choose who is a right feminist or not?”
interesting question for sure but as the article above points out Taylors feminism is Taylorism and not feminism. its fine to call out people who only serve themselves.

personally i would say someone like Taylor identifying with feminism makes it only worse. sure lots of her young fans will call themselves feminists too but what does it help if they are exactly like Taylor? then we can bury the term altogether.

      • Betsy says:

If thousands of young women who are otherwise only exposed to the all-too-prevalent trope that feminists are bees, man-hating, etc, I don’t think it’s a bad thing at all. I look at the way I understood issues when I was a teen vs. now and I am glad that I got to this point, inspired by great people and random crap alike.

    • Naddie says:

Word on. I take none of them, two jerks with differents m.o. Nicki can bark as much as her can, but in the end she’ll have to realize how bad her songs and videos are. Is there racism against black women in the industry? Sure. But, as you said, it’s not what’s happening. I remmember when Steve Tyler said something about her on American Idol and all she did was curse and call him racist. She could hold hands with Iggy and go away. And oh, take Swift with them (with super models squad and all).

      • JENNA says:

They are both trash. Nicki doesn’t care about other black artists, she only cares about herself. And thank God Anaconda wasn’t nominated, the VMAs are already lame enough.

      • I Choose Me says:

You and Melissa Manifesto said everything I want to say and then some.

Nicki makes some valid points but it gets overshadowed by her petty ways. Choose your battles Nicki. It’s the freakin VMAS.

      • Anna says:

I think you’re missing her point because you dislike Nicki Minaj. Black artists, especially women are treated very differently in the industry and that’s why Nicki finally spoke up about it. Even in the reactions afterwards the white-centric media used more “crazy” pictures of Nicki and nice wholesome pictures of Taylor to portray Nicki as some insane bully but luckily a lot of black celebrities started calling out the journalists and some were deleted and changed.
Taylor thinks that feminism is all about men instead of realizing that white women are treated a lot better than women of colour and that she should use her position of privilege to support them not make them seem crazy for finally standing up for themselves.
Taylor did the wrong thing by responding to Nicko, she should’ve just stayed out of it since she didn’t contribute anything useful. I’m glad she got dragged and I’m glad other black artists had Nicki’s back.

      • Tiffany :) says:

Not getting nominated for VOTY, while being nominated for other awards, is NOT a great example of black women being treated differently in the industry. There are a lot of videos that fall into that category and it’s not like the video was shut out of awards contention. I totally think black women do get treated differently by the media, but there are much better examples to focus on.

    • LB says:

Celebrities have the platform to reach a lot of people so I have no problem with them speaking out. The problem is more so that they sound so uninformed and uneducated.

Taylor knows very little about feminism beyond what Lena Dunham has thought her. That’s been enough though for her, though, to wield it as a shield against any legitimate criticism. Any critique of her is anti-feminist, don’t ya know? And she’s not afraid to say it, meanwhile failing to notice her own hypocrisy in crying Bad Blood in an effort to tear down Katy Perry. Her feminism ends with her.

For the record, I think Nicki might have actually been talking about Miley who was awarded some video award for using her sexuality in Wrecking Ball whereas African American women generally are not. I think Nicki’s critique of that is pretty legit because it isn’t the first time that has happened (also has anyone noticed how a lot of the articles on this are about Nicki attacking Taylor, Taylor being a victim, not to mention the pictures they’ve been putting up of Nicki and Taylor in juxtaposition) but then she veered off into stupidity (Tidal?) because her understanding of feminism is pretty shallow as well and also ends at herself.

Yes they are both successful and also very self centered in their understanding of feminism (as you said, who gets to decide? I don’t know because most people’s definition ends at their own experience). But doesn’t mean that Nicki is wrong about some of the very real dynamics that exist in the media. At least it’s generating some very good conversation from those who are educated and informed enough to articulate some very real problems that permeate not just in entertainment but in society in general. I think that’s better than ignoring it all together.

      • ell says:

as problematic as taylor’s view of feminism can be, i wouldn’t say bad blood is tearing down katy perry; she talks about the end of a friendship where one side was double faced. what does it have to do with feminism??

      • LB says:

Considering Taylor’s own definition of anti feminism appears to be anytime anyone says anything negative about her, what she’s doing to Katy Perry is about the same. There wasn’t any need for her to reveal who the song was about and then portray a Taylor army in the video. If anyone had done the same to her, you know she’d be crying about how anti feminist it all was.

You can’t play victim when you’re doing the same stuff to others.

      • ell says:

i see your point, but lbr, katy perry was hardly above it. remember when she got her boyfriend diplo to pick on taylor? i see this one as less of a feminism issue, but rather just a bad break up of a friendship. they happen. and for what is worth, i don’t think taylor ever said it was about katy.

      • tallo says:

        +1

      • Original T.C. says:

Bad Blood is intended to attack Katy Perry. End of. There are always a million excuses why it’s OK for Taylor to make these petty attack songs against boyfriends or girls who have hurt her feelings

      • msw says:

Katy is inserting herself into this crap now.

    • mytbean says:

But what was said is true. Why couldn’t it also be some guy who took Minaj’s spot? But then, I thought it’s kind of a consensus that Nicki is not that great to begin with so the whole point is kind of moot.

      • JohnWayneLives says:

@MYTBEAN that’s what I’m saying. And the Anaconda video was gross. I don’t care what color those butt were. She’s mediocre at best.

    • fee says:

      TotAlly agree MelissaManifesto
This is the most ridiculous argument t for racism, sexism feminism.
I don’t care for either girl, but Nicky is speaking to Taylor
And she loses points when Beyonce is nominated in the same category. Best video for MTV? Who cares. How many pther s did not get any noms, do u hear them bitching. IMO, a video about your big ass, sexual driven porn like video does not deserve to be used as an example about feminism. These women have lost all decency in their careers. Nicky wants to bitch about not getting a nom go ahead but do not use feminism when women have worked hard to be taken seriously and not to defend big asses.

    • MARKWEER says:

You own this one manifesto–nothing else needs to be said–Drop the mike to the floor and exit the room

  2. someone says:

Nicki was clearly talking about Taylor. It’s so tiring when people make vague tweets putting someone else down and then play the “I wasn’t talking about you” card when the person they are talking about fights back. Nicki should own up she was talking about Taylor and not play this denial game.

That said, Taylor clearly should have taken the high road on this and ignored Nicki.

    • Lucky says:

I don’t think Taylor is the only slim white person in the world… Ed used a slim white dancer in his video… Most video girls are slim and white… Her point is totally valid and making it about Taylor is taking the emphasis off the point- black women are influential and worthy and rarely recognized in our culture. And she is right that swift (and/or) people like her (ones with privilege) are the ones who are supposed to call these things out- but so often we marginalized poc and then leave them to defend or call out their own marginalization and then we decide of their feelings are worthy of our attention.

      • ell says:

she’s not the only slim person, but she was the only white, slim woman nominated for this award. it’s pretty obvious nicki was subtweeting taylor.

but i agree with op that taylor should have stayed out of things she knows little to nothing about.

      • Lucky says:

Right- but I don’t *think* she is saying if you are a slim white artist but rather if your video features slim white women… Aannnd the deflection continues…

      • Babalon says:

        +1000

      • QQ says:

        that’s exactly it Lucky
How Ever this is some petty Betty ass sh!t: Nicki didn’t need to be crying foul over a gd VMA that means Next to NOTHING.0 of Zero ( Valid Point as though she has)

and Taylor Could have kept it cute cause Nicki IS right and she wasn’t about to bat for Black girls as proof that she obviously didnt subsequently, nor is she going to address the white comfy privilege that allows her her popularity and the Media Cosseting she enjoys

      • MrsBump says:

I would agree with your point if it wasn’t for that Nikki WAS nominated for other vma awards both for Anaconda and for her video with Beyonce. She states clearly herself thatit was for the video of the year award that she should have been nominated too. So there is no deflection here, she is not refering to Miley Cyrus or other slim white women dancers. Her original tweet was directed at T.Swift. Her point about black women not being rewarded for their contribution to music would have been a valid one, except that Beyonce is leading the nomination list in the video of the year category. Nikki is using race and trying to turn this into a social issue and it is frankly disappointing to see so many commentors falling for it. The representation of people of color in the media is a serious and important discussion that has been hijacked by a video fetishising (once again) black women for their body parts.

      • Lucky says:

hmmm… Two black women being nominated is hardly a ringing sign of equality. You can’t always hold up the few successful (Beyoncé) and say, “see! See! This isn’t racism, we are equal, we let bey into the party!” It is more institutional than that, as evidenced in every aspect of business, women make less than men, and black women make less wham white women. Black female representation in film, and in music does not compare to their representation in real life. Inequality is real, regardless if you like or respect the person who points it out, orrrrr how they point it out.

      • MrsBump says:

I absolutely agree that black women should be represented more. Though, we need to ask ourselves whether woc want to be portrayed like in Anaconda. I’ve been told once that i looked like Nikki, and i for one want nothing to do with her portrayal
of woc as sex object with oversized booties.
I can understand why the commentors here want to drive this point across, however this is completly the wrong example. I see a lot of people bending the story to make it fit into a narrative of how the contribution of black women are not recognised when the reality (before Nikki was called out) is that this is purely sour grapes.

    • pleaseicu says:

Nah, she was probably talking about Miley who got nominated and won VOY and during this all she favorited some tweets referencing Miley and Wrecking Ball.

Nicki’s not necessarily wrong–a woman of color breaks all sorts of records and influences pop culture in a substantive way with her video, has commercial and critical success and she can’t get nominated by those who decide such things. A young thin white woman does similar and not only gets the nomination but the win. That is what Nicki was criticizing. It was a rant about the asses in the industry who decide nominations not about the young thin woman and her video. She had a good point before she went off about Tidal.

Taylor just likes to make everything about herself. And her follow up tweet about giving Nicki permission to come onstage with her if Taylor won was just all kinds of tone deaf, given the times we live in and the conversation Nicki was trying to have with her followers.

      • Kingsbury says:

        yes, yes, yes

      • Bobo says:

I could kind of understand Taylor’s first response because Minaj’s tweets were indirectly about her, but that “come on stage while I win awards” was so damn infuriating and patronising. How fucking clueless can you get.

Minaj’s tweets were about the industry, not the artists. Sad this is now about Nicki vs. Taylor rather than about racism in the music industry.

      • WR says:

“Nicki’s not necessarily wrong–a woman of color breaks all sorts of records and influences pop culture in a substantive way with her video, has commercial and critical success and she can’t get nominated by those who decide such things.”

If it really was Nicki’s goal to make a larger point beyond wah wah wah my video didn’t get nominated for VOTY the VMAs weren’t the best venue to point the finger at. The VMA nominations are very diverse. Beyonce and Kendrick Lamar are both nominated for Video of the Year. So, is Bruno Mars, who’s also nonwhite. And it’s not like Nicki was snubbed. She got nominations in other categories. Of course, Taylor Swift is going to get nominated. She’s been massive this year. Let’s face it, Nicki is a whiner who could care less about social issues but is using current racial issues for her own selfish ends. Taylor is a terrible person in my opinion but she’s completely in the right here.

    • Artemis says:

I read on another gossip community that she was talking about Miley and Wrecking Ball a lot and so this rant is a continuation of that. That would make more sense tbh. Although I think Swift is part of the rant, Miley is a bigger issue. If Minaj drops your name, you know she means business. I think they just picked Swift because she’s so much in the news.

      • JB11322 says:

If it was about wrecking ball and miley nicki has to know it was a better song, with better lyrics, had broader appeal and less offensive video. Miley ‘ s cultural appropriation is an old grievance. Nicki’ bojangling big black butt for mass (white) appeal bothers me more.

Nicki is pretty corny. I found her anaconda song lyrics rhyming for rhyming ‘ s sake and just boring and I thought her video was gross. I’m all for strong sexy women, but Nicki has maintained a waning relevancy being a big booty over sexualized loud mouth yuck. It’s not empowering, provocative or even interesting, just garish. She’s played out and arguing over an award no one else cares about is a testament to that. Nicki dug herself into a black barbie purple wig, gaga outfit knock off hole and now wants black feminism to save her.
Nope, sorry, dear. You are the problem.

Is Nicki going to cop to riding gaga ‘ s gimmicky coat tails to the pop music scene is also a good question. But she’s Assata Shakur, now right?

Best line in this – Kim quoting kanye

    • Original T.C. says:

Taylor has no business talking about Nicki being anti-feminist for calling out other women when Taylor talks shit about her ex-boyfriend’s girlfriend, imaginary girls taking her imaginary boyfriends, Tina Fey and her latest album about her friendenemy.

Nicki on the other hand makes a valid point about the industry’s maltreatment of Black women and their sexuality but I’m not sure her point is valid when applied to HER Anaconda video. Sir Mix-a-Lot did it better IMO. And yes the media will reward Black sexuality but only when it comes in the form of Beyoncé and Rihanna. AKA looking as close to White as possible. Nicki was favored more when she had the Barbie look with my lighter skin combined. She knows that’s what the industry is like and the reason she was popular before in White media. Looking as close to White as possible even in Black media unfortunately.

  3. Kaya says:

Nicki is making her sexist, cheap, talent-starved video into a black feminist issue?

    • klaas says:

That video is embarrassing. I think, wiht that video, most people laughed at Nicki, not with her.

What bugs me the most is the fact that Nicki’s body is not natural. She’s has breast, hips, behind of a curvy woman but tummy, arms, legs of skinny woman. And we should celebrate that over Taylor’s natural ( looking ) body.

      • Naddie says:

I laughed like crazy with Anaconda. Also, the lady who plays Nicki in the parody is hilarious.

    • CG says:

Nicki’s video and song are both terrible. I’m no Swift fan, but at least I can actually listen to an entire song of hers when it comes on the radio. When Anaconda came on, I had to turn it off.

      • Dvaria says:

Anaconda on repeat is what i believe hell must be like. If that were used by the CIA, I would confess anything in the world.

      • Bridget says:

I’m not a fan of Anaconda, though I think hell has Thinking Out Loud on repeat. That song is the worst.

    • ell says:

my issue with anaconda is that the idea a curvy woman should feel validated because some random dude’s anaconda likes it, makes me wanna vomit. it’s not a good message, and I never got the praise.

      • Lynnie says:

I thought the message was supposed to be she likes her curvy body for herself, and doesn’t need a man to validate it or whatever.

      • ell says:

it’s not the only thing she says. if you listen/read the lyrics, she clearly talks of men liking curvy women better because “he want something he can grab”- actual line from anaconda. which is gross.

i mean, i’d be 100% behind her if she were singing of feeling happy in whatever way she looks, but when you bring the old “men like curvy women” into it, you totally lose me on the message. what men like shouldn’t validate us and make us feel positive about the way we look, and the importance we give to men’s opinions of our bodies is part of the problem. so no, thanks.

    • M.A.F. says:

Grrr…you all realize that she used samples from a song that was released in the 80s right? A song that was sung by a man, right?

    • Pandy says:

My thought exactly! That video was beyond awful – how is it worthy of a VOTY? But playing the race card to justify it is foolish.

  4. Drbzy says:

Like Kim has enough brain capacity to understand what’s going on in a world outside of herself.

    • Bea says:

LOL If Kim tweeted that on purpose, she has my utmost respect and love as of this moment.

  5. Abbott says:

    Nicki’s point.

    Taylor’s head.

It drives me crazy when she invokes feminism and ‘women should stick together’ to dismiss Nicki’s very valid argument (except for the Tidal part because… no). Feminism is not a tool to wield when someone disagrees with you. Especially when she’s being rewarded for putting herself and friend squad against other women.

And following it up with ‘if I win pleas come up with me?’ So patronizing and disingenuous. It also puts Nicki in a sh*tty position.

Have a seat, Taylor. Let me pull a chair out for you. Ma’am, your seat’s in Row D. Did anyone save a seat for Taylor? SIT DOWN, TAY-TAY.

    • someone says:

Maybe it wasn’t how she meant it – but the way Nicki tweeted it made it seem like the VMAs could only nominate one woman’s video (other than Beyoncé) and Taylor won because she’s white and skinny. Why not argue that Ed Sheeran’s Thinking Out Loud video was nothing special. I don’t recall Ed’s video sparking conversation like Taylors did (good and bad).

    • Bridget says:

I disagree with you on this one. Nicki was having a temper tantrum, and was very clearly referring to one person (it certainly wasn’t Beyonce). She wasn’t making a social statement, she was complaining that she didn’t get nominated for a VMA.

      • Abbott says:

I see your point. I read it as a social statement on the industry and she used Taylor as an example.

      • Bridget says:

Nicki Minaj only cares about Nicki Minaj. The only social statement she’s interested in making is that she feels she needs more recognition.

      • Tiffany :) says:

        I agree, Bridget.

    • Alex says:

Agreed. Every time I think Taylor might be getting better she inserts herself in a convo and instead of agreeing that its a valid point she makes it about her and her feelings.
Btw the Nicki Manaj comment was about Wrecking Ball and its a valid point. But instead of talking about that point we are now talking about this stupid fued…which is exactly Nicki’s point.

  6. Elyse says:

Anaconda is not a good song, but let’s face it, either is Bad Blood. It’s not a good video either, just because it has a billion super models. Taylor is so involved with playing victim, she didn’t hesitate for one second to consider that nicki wasn’t criticizing Taylor, but the organization that nominates mostly white centric artists. Everything about Taylor’s two tweets were patronizing. She’s so focused on her view of the world, she forgets there’s bigger issues than the media being mean to her.

    • Bridget says:

Nicki was pretty clearly talking about Taylor. Which is fine – but don’t pretend otherwise. And Nicki could care less about other women and body image and all of that, she cares about NICKI.

      • Elyse says:

I think she was honestly talking about MTV. Nicki’s video held the vevo record for most views before Taylor’s bad blood video beat it. Yet, anaconda wasn’t nominated? That is not an insult on Taylor directly, but stating that MTV favors Taylor over Nicki (you know, skinny white girls over women of color). Which is true, let’s be real. Nicki might not care about anyone but Nicki, but this Twitter feud shows that Taylor only cares about Taylor, as well.

      • pleaseicu says:

No, Nicki was pretty blatantly referring to Miley and Wrecking Ball, if you look at the entire conversation, and the reference was in the context of a wider point she was making about executives/the industry who favor thin white women’s videos over women of color who are just as successful, if not moreso, than the white woman’s video.

Taylor doesn’t even follow Nicki and Nicki didn’t make a direct or indirect reference to Taylor, so it wouldn’t have shown up in Taylor’s timeline. She found out about it because some of her TaylorNation! minions saw Nicki’s pne tweet, assumed it was about Taylor and pointed it out to Taylor and Taylor inserted herself into it by playing victim and without looking at the bigger discussion Nicki was having.

Nicki is about Nicki but that doesn’t make her point yesterday about the industry and those in charge of it invalid either.

      • Snowflake says:

Exactly. She’s a sore loser so instead of owning up that she lost, she tries to make it into a racial issue. Because she’s so fabulous, her losing has to do with her race.

      • Bridget says:

Either way, it isn’t Nicki’s choice of target that bugs me (she can shade whomever she wants, after all). Anaconda was a crappy video to a crappy song. The last 60-90 seconds is just Baby Got Back remixed, she doesn’t even say a word. And the choreography is bad. Now, is it worse than Ed Sheeran’s god-awful Thinking Out Loud? I don’t know. But she’s not complaining because there’s something genuinely wrong with the system (which there is), she’s complaining because she thinks she should be honored more.

    • Happy21 says:

Nicki’s Anaconda video had the record amount of VEVO views before Bad Blood for one reason only – because most people were going to watch and say WTF!? Not because it was a good video or a song. It was a mess, a joke. I watched it simply because it was SO horrible and I had to see for myself. Bad Blood featured all sorts of models who girls who like Taylor Swift these days look up to. And let’s face it, Taylor Swift is a commercial success in every way. N’uff said. Maybe if Nicki didn’t make a joke out of herself, people would be able to take her seriously.

    • Tiffany :) says:

“consider that nicki wasn’t criticizing Taylor, but the organization that nominates mostly white centric artists”

Beyoncé is tied for most nominations this year. She is also nominated for Video of the Year.

  7. Ann says:

They are all idiots. It’s like they are fighting over airplane food.

  8. Cynthia says:

Taylor needs to learn about intersectionality and stop putting out patronizing ” kumbaya” tweets. Other nominees didn’t feel the need to speak so why did she have to insert herself in a discussion about misogynoir in the music industry? And accusing Nicki of not supporting other women?
But hey Lena Dunham introduced her to feminism so I’m not really surprised.

    • Zaid says:

It first reads like Nicki is shading Taylor tho. She’s referring to her. Which other artist nominated for Best Video of the Year used slim models? That said, Taylor should have stayed quiet.

      • Allie says:

See, I don’t think Nicki was shading Taylor, but more MTV for the nominations. I’m so sick of Taylor injecting herself in every situation and making it about her and her type of feminism. She should have stayed quiet.

      • Cynthia says:

I saw it as Nicki shading MTV and white media in general who award what’s white and skinny. Anyway I still don’t get why Taylor had to be like “I love you and support you!!!” Girl please, take a seat.

      • Zaid says:

I do believe she was talking about MTV, but she also used Taylor’s video as an example. Again, Taylor shouldn’t have commented, specially with such a lame attempt to ‘defend’ herself

  9. Loopy says:

I was very disappointed with Nicki’s back peddling when clearly she was talking about Taylor, and as for Swift she feels invincible right now, the Queen B with her ‘squad’ and stans acting like little minions.

    • Lynnie says:

But it wasn’t about Taylor though. It was about the VMAs nominating skinny white artists over everything at the expense of successful black artists. (Also I’m reading it might have to deal with Miley Cyrus and some special award she received but idk)

    • Alex says:

      it was actually about miley

  10. OSTONE says:

All of this for the VMAs? The VMAs, where the trophy is popcorn and we all know the winners are arranged ahead of time and aware so they show up. Both Anaconda and Bad Blood are terrible songs with terrible videos. So both should have a stadium full of seats.

    • Ronda says:

never underestimate the greed for meaningless thropies. i could call the glass on my desk “Award for Best Acting in a movie starting with the letter B” and there would be lots of actors knocking on my door. And they would cry when i give them the award.

    • Div says:

LOL. That was my first though…The VMAs?

      • Abbott says:

I’m crossing my fingers for a Vampire Diaries v Supernatural throw down over those surfboard awards.

    • Kitten says:

      You stole my comment.
My first thought as well: wow, people still give two f*cks about the VMAS?

    • Tiffany :) says:

Seriously! I’m not going to watch, it’s become too painful.

    • M.A.F. says:

VMA= moon man. MTV Movie awards= popcorn

Overall- MTV stopped being a music cable station around 2005 thus stopped being a major source of pop culture.

  11. Ronda says:

“Taylor Swift – who has quickly become the patron saint of young, white feminists who believe that feminism is defined as “stop saying mean things about Taylor Swift!!”

    BAM! thats spot on.

    • InvaderTak says:

Love how TS thinks it’s such an honor for others to “share her stage”. She has the amazing ability to make it all about HER. Just no Swifty.

      • Abbott says:

The stage invite was so condescending.

      • I Choose Me says:

Yup. And this is why I can never ever get on the Swifty train.

      • kri says:

I cannot believe that Swifty basically offered Nicki a “Bless Your Heart” ticket by inviting her to tag along onstage. OMFG. Swifty is an efficient machine, and Nicki needs to just own what she says. You know what’s coming folks-MTV is going to harness these two together, and they are going to do the choreo together for “Anaconda” and Shake It Off in some kind of awesomely gross mashup performance. I hope it will feature other great performers such as Left Shark, Sinead O”Connor, and Charlie Sheen. the sick part of me wants to see this hot mess so bad!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Kingsbury says:

too bad it derails into blaming nicki from there.

  12. Nebby says:

I’m not seeing how anything Nicki was saying is targeting swift, more so how the media treats different types of artist. By keeping this whole Nicki is specifically targeting Swift you’re only proving her point. And none of Nickis retweets dragged Taylor, they only stated how the media was reporting the issue which was all about making Minaj the bully and Taylor the victim. If you look at how other sites reported it they used a angry or bugged eyed pic of Nicki and a sweet pic of Taylor, you can’t see the problem with that? Do I think Nicki was being selfish by wanting more nominations? Yes. But did she lie about how the media treats black women? No.

    • The Original Mia says:

      Exactly!

    • JENNA says:

I suggest you check the tweets she favourited.
      She’s just petty and jealous.

      • Nebby says:

Again the tweets she has as favorite are about how Taylor missed the point and how it’s not about her but the media itself. And your argument that Nicki is just bitter and jealous, instead of looking at what she’s saying, only proves her point. Simple example: Two women sneeze in a room only the skinny one gets a bless you. The larger says I guess you gotta be skinny to get a bless you… You see how that’s not an attack on the skinny girl instead its critisim of the people in the room.

    • OhDear says:

Agreed! Swift should have kept out of it – her response was embarrassing.

People’s reactions to this “beef” are proving Minaj’s point, though.

    • M.A.F. says:

Yep. Sums up just about every other comment here too.

  13. MrsBump says:

Please.. Nicki’s video does nothing to promote a different type of beauty, fetishising is not the same as helping change people’s perception. She is upset about not being nominated and trying to turn this into a social cause.
I am not a fan of Taylor Swift but her response is on point. Instead of turning this into a racial issue, why not ask why only 2 women were nominated. I notice that Nicki has no complaints about Beyonce’s body type

    • Snowflake says:

Yes! I feel like Nikki will never own her shit, it’s always someone’s else fault. So because she lost, it’s a racial issue. No doubt there are those issues, but Nikki is a sore loser pointing the finger at someone else.

    • Neah23 says:

Lol Taylor did the same thing she does not care about other females just herself. The only time Taylor wasn’t to speak out about anything is when something effects her other wise she quit.

  14. Amanda says:

Nicki makes a valid point, and I think taylor should not take it so personally.

  15. Talie says:

I don’t think Nicki was coming for Taylor at all. She was talking about something wider and Taylor just zeroed in on herself, of course.

    • Courtney says:

If Nicki had wanted to make that clear, she shouldn’t have vague tweeted. (I loathe vague tweeting/facebooking/instagramming)

  16. funcakes says:

Niki tries desperately to stay relevant any way she can because she’s a one trick pony.
Real talent never need to stoop to stunts, their gifts speak for themselves.
Meanwhile every video manji’s in set women back ten years. But that’s how she makes her money.

  17. Bridget says:

Way to really pick your battles Nicki: complaining that your crappy video and song didn’t get nominated for more VMAs. Anaconda was a terrible song and a terrible video, and wouldn’t have been played in the first place if it wasn’t based off of a song everyone knows and likes. And the choreography was genuinely bad.

  18. Meatball says:

I really don’t see this as Nicki taking a jab at Taylor, yes she was talking about her video, but I don’t think she was blaming TS for her lack of noms. I really took it as her calling out MTV, because obviously there is nothing Taylor can do about the fact that she got nominated, but of course it turns into big mean Nicki picky on poor innocent Taylor.

Also Taylor telling Nicki to come up with her if she wins, was beyond ridiculous. i sprained something rolling my eyes.

    • MrsBump says:

Nicki’s complaint is specifically about the video of the year award, for which only two women were nominated, Beyonce and T.Swift. So clearly this jab about models was aimed at Swift.
Pulling out the race card to defend a song like Anaconda only serves to trivialise the discussion regarding the portrayal and visibility of people of colour in the media.

      • Meatball says:

Again, I don’t see her comments as blaming Taylor. Taylor didn’t have anything to do with herself getting nominated, someone else made that choice.

      • Naddie says:

Great point. She used racism because it’s convenient. In one video she makes a parade of butts, bragged about prostitution and being high. And let’s not forget the “skinny bitches” part.

      • Lynnie says:

Are we still on this “skinny bitches” thing? 😒 It’s a joke (albeit probably not the best one) trying to show non-skinny people that their bodies are awesome too. If a skinny person felt offended by that part of the song all they would have to do would be opening their favorite magazine, turn on the tv, or even just look at how people treat skinny bodies vs. their bigger counterparts.

      • Kingsbury says:

she didn’t say anything about other women. just about videos. could have been about sheeran or bruno mars

      • Naddie says:

Yes, we still are. And, did you get the part of objectfying women’s body, “letting he hit it cause he slang cocaine”? I mean, one does what one wants, but the whole video is awful. Please, point me one good thing about Anaconda, just one. She is right about black singer being treated differently, but it doesn’t make her video and horrible dance skills any better.

    • me says:

how is no one mentioning the fact that nicki said she was going to go on stage and accept her video of the year wins for her two videos?? She’s doing and saying the same things Kanye gets crap for but its okay cause it’s a “social issue” NO! She was complaining about not getting the video of the year nomination and that’s it. And for everyone saying Taylor should have kept her mouth shut, why?? If someone obviously points a finger at you, why is it wrong to defend yourself????

  19. malina says:

Anaconda was a pain to watch. As far as I’m concerned Taylor hasn’t made a video full of skinny white butts. Of course, it is only my opinion but I reckon the nominations have very little to do with black/white bodies or intersectional feminism but simply more with taste.

  20. radio active says:

I’m sorry but why have the Video Music Awards when you don’t show music videos? #helpmeunderstand.

  21. Jayna says:

Poor Nicki. Her boob job and very obvious butt injections or butt implant all for naught.

  22. littlemissnaughty says:

They’re both deluded. 1) Anaconda is a gross video and a bad song so maybe that’s why it wasn’t nominated. 2) Bad Blood is not great either but come on, these things are about commercially successful music not “artistry”. TS is definitely the most successful, commercially at least. Whether that in itself says something about the music industry re race would be an interesting topic but NM was just p*ssed.

This conversation is pointless because no matter what Nicki Minaj says on the topic and no matter how smart or valid it is, she will always look like she’s just green with envy as long as her reason for speaking out is not being nominated for an award. At the very least, get your PR person on it and find a famous friend who will do your bidding. Looks much better. But I guess with Twitter, who needs PR?

And btw, Taylor Swift shoud NOT speak on this. No no no, please don’t. I feel like Nicki is setting her up with that because HOW could that end well for anyone? Taylor Swift speaking out about race, feminism, and the situation of women of color in the music industry and in pop culture??? WHAT? HOW could that end well?

  23. Div says:

I like Nicki for the most part, and she has very valid points. However, dragging Swift, who benefits from the industry, rather than the industry itself is a little petty and doesn’t help her get her point across. She’s clearly dragging Swift with that one tweet too, especially when you look at the list. However, that doesn’t invalidate her very real argument. I wish she had just focused her criticism on MTV though than individual singers. Plus, let’s be real, Ed Sheeran is the one sticking out like a sore thumb compared to the rest of them—I understand why Taylor got a nom for VOTY but not him.

Basically, Taylor needs to learn to let some shit go and stop making it all about her. Plus, she needs to pick up a book on intersectionality. Nicki needs to express her opinions without shading people who aren’t the real culprit. Team Nicki, but neither comes across that well imo.

  24. lem says:

I get Nicki’s point in a larger context but not when it comes to the VMA nominations. She specifically called out Taylor when Beyonce was also nominated and all the other nominees were men. And I don’t think the failure of Tidal had anything to do with race.

  25. lili says:

I thought nicki was referring to last year’s wrecking ball “video of the year “nomination when I first read her tweets.

  26. Sassback says:

Nicki was definitely shading Taylor and white media in general, but Taylor shouldn’t have responded period because Nicki is right. Her video had an insane impact, way more than Taylor’s video did, and quite frankly, Nicki’s video and song are way more about female empowerment than any of Taylor’s singles were. Nicki owns female sexuality in that video, people construe it as shaking it for a man, but the lyrics are clearly about how she conquers men. And there’s a scene in there that is a huge obvious metaphor where she has the banana and then breaks it. One of Taylor’s big singles this year was about how she acts crazy in a relationship because women get crazy in relationships and the other was about how some other female artist betrayed her and now it’s on. Taylor fought back when she has nothing to say-it’s like #AllLivesMatter versus #BlackLivesMatter-the#AllLivesMatter sound like idiots because white people cant make excuses for the marginalization of black people. Nicki is a woman of color with intimidating sexuality, and Taylor is white girl who thinks her white friends are the epitome of feminism.
That being said, both artists are wrong about streaming. Apple Music seems to be a happy medium between Spotify and Tidał so I think everyone can chillax now.

    • Kingsbury says:

i agreeeeee. i think she was shading miley/past VMAs as much as taylor but taylor had to insert herself into the conversation

  27. Ms. Turtle says:

I like Taylor but I cringed reading her “if I win…” tweet. Yowza. Sometimes the best road is the one where you stay silent. Interjecting yourself in this situation only gives fuel to the people who hate you.

  28. grabbyhands says:

The bottom line is that they should both be embarrassed that they’ve argued this publicly over a VMA award nomination.

That’s like being pissed over who has a bigger candy ring, since it counts for about as much.

  29. ell says:

i like taylor, but i can see she could do with educating herself, as MANY people do- myself included. I think she made a mistake getting involved in things she knows nothing about, but hopefully what happened would encourage her (and other people) to be less ignorant.

that said, nicki was blatantly subtweeting her, and while I totally see her point and understand there’s definitely is racism in the music industry, there are other ways to stir a debate, less hostile towards other female artists.

  30. K says:

I don’t know if kim knew what was going on but if she did sorry that is hilarious. I can also see her knowing because that was a perfect grab for attention and no one knows how to do that better then kim.

Taylor should have stayed out of it. She really needs to grow up a bit even if nicki was talking about her not everything is a personal affront that requires response. Nicki was upset she went off, she shouldn’t have you just do that either, but Taylor needs to learn to be a grown up and realize you aren’t always the victim and everything isn’t always about you!

And yes I know it’s possible nicki was talking about Taylor but it’s possible she was being more general larger point and by jumping in Taylor eclipsed it and took focus. If Taylor was truly hurt and offended she could have reached out privately to talk to nicki but the way she did it was very look at me give me attention.

  31. Skins says:

I usually like Taylor, but Bad Blood did nothing for me. I think is was just something thrown together so she could get together with all her buddies and make a video. As far as Anaconda, that was just total garbage. I’d say Nicki should be ashamed of herself for making crap like that, but she really doesn’t have any shame.

  32. I Choose Me says:

Okay I admit it. I laughed at Kim’s tweet.

    • Cricket says:

Me too! Best part of this sordid mess! If her uncanny timing was just oblivious or not it was the cherry on top.

I admit to never seeing the Nicki video, did see the Taylor BB video bc it was screened at the beginning of some awards show. But, if we are going on merit based on video concept and creativity to tell a story, I hate to admit but I love the Blank Space video. Lol! I’m not a TS fan but love the video with the beautiful house and the horses and dogs and her going all stalker crazy is very entertaining. But this is coming from someone who remember MTV from its infant stage when there were videos all the time and many we shot with a Sony handy cam and terrible ‘special effects’ (bow wow wow, I Want Candy…anyone?)

  33. AuroraBorealis says:

So many people invalidating Nicki’s argument. The point wasn’t even at Taylor, it was about MTV and the system and how they are so quick to applaud someone for being white and skinny. Nicki had a very valid point, don’t dismiss it just because you don’t like her video or her music. And Taylor shows that she can’t help showing what a narcissist she is with a humongous victim complex. It wasn’t about her for chrissakes, it was about a bigger issue. Please.

    • The Original Mia says:

Well, it is a black woman making this statement, so it’s easy to dismiss what she is saying. The comments here and on twitter just validated Nicki’s point.

      • Marty says:

Exactly. The casual sexism and racism in this thread is appaling. I can understand not agreeing with Nicki, but seeing the way people on this thread are talking about her to justify their opinion is disgusting.

    • coco says:

      Thank you!!! Well Said!!!

    • Cynthia says:

      Everything you said!!!

    • Whatwhatnot says:

But she invalidated herself because in Anaconda, she talks a lot of ish about skinny girls (like she wasn’t one herself before all the fat transfers and implants). So while she may want to stick up for the thick chicks, she doesn’t have to do it by putting down another body type (one she knew would get her no where in her genre so she altered it)

Also, Beyonce was nominated. She may be much thinner now, but Beyonce was always pretty much known for her thick hips and curvy figure so I’m not sure why she totally glossed over that and made it all about the skinny white chicks.

At the end of the day, Anaconda was just a bad video.

    • ell says:

nicki has a very valid point that should be discussed, but she was the one who made it petty the moment she subtweeted taylor. come on, of course it was about taylor, she was the only one white, slim woman nominated for it! i’m not saying taylor’s response was ok, in fact it was awkward and ignorant, but nicki brought the wrong kind of attention to this issue.

    • Kingsbury says:

yup. I don’t think Anaconda was that great but Nicki had a point and Taylor started shit because she’s a narcissist. disappointed in Kaiser, usually celebitchy doesn’t just take the side of the white girl by default but they kinda did here.

      • Snowflake says:

How was Taylor talking shit? She said Nikki was welcome on stage with her? Sounds like she’s being nice and trying to calm things down. Then again, what do I know? I’m just a white chick so her and I must be racist. Can’t be that Nikki’s a sore loser

      • Hannah says:

Taylor didn’t have to say anything. By tweeting she actually led the discussion down the wrong path. What could have been an interesting discussion became about Taylor as opposed to larger issues at hand. Taylor basically made it about her. Which wasn’t helpful at all. She’s not the only skinny white girl in the music industry, miley won the very same award last year.

    • M.A.F. says:

      Yep.

    • fee says:

Her whole point of black and big is invalidated once Beyonce is in said category. Nicky was not snubbed, how many nom did she get, she simply thinks that certain category should be with her, please, a video based on close ups of her fake ass

  34. The Original Mia says:

Taylor is a child. “You don’t like me. Why not? We’re all besties.” GTFO, Taylor. Have a freaking seat and stop with your childishness. Nicki is entitled to her own feelings on her own twitter page. She doesn’t have to check her feelings for fear of upsetting everyone’s best friend, Taylor. And then the condescending invite to join her on stage…Girl what is wrong with you?

    • coco says:

      This!!!

    • Cynthia says:

The invite to the stage was embarassing, so condescending.

    • pleaseicu says:

Taylor really can’t handle it when she’s not seen as the victim and when anyone calls her out on any possible problematic behavior.

After the “join me on stage” tweet went over like a lead balloon, Taylor’s team must’ve gone into crisis mode and her publicist called in a favor. The NY Daily News published an “Exclusive” at 2:00 A.M. today about how Taylor’s mom’s cancer diagnosis almost made Taylor cancel her world tour. 2:00 in the morning? Come on.

  35. Whatwhatnot says:

So Nicki is mad that her vulgar, embarrassing, sexist, skinny-shaming video didn’t get nominated and tries to make it about the media being against the thick sistas? Really? Hypocrite much? (and I’m a curvy girl)

Anaconda was terrible. The song AND the video. Bad Blood was no Thriller either, so don’t get it twisted. But Nicki is just saying the grapes are sour because she was snubbed. Maybe she should cape for performers like Janelle Monae who get looked over constantly because they aren’t putting out objectifying videos for shock value and playing up the sex object role for attention, but actually put out music of substance.

    • Kingsbury says:

      lol “skinny-shaming”

      • ell says:

isn’t it true though? i don’t get women who feel validated by making other women feel bad about their bodies. what would you call lyrics like “Fk them skinny bitches, fk them skinny bitches in the club”?

      • Whatwhatnot says:

Yup! Those are the exact lyrics I’m talking about. Especially coming from a self-hater like Nicki who fell under the pressure to alter her own, formerly skinny, smaller T&A figure to become the “ideal” thick video chick that her genre has been exploiting while she was trying to break into the industry with her mixtapes.

    • Snowflake says:

      This!!!!

  36. Veronica says:

I can see why Tay took it personally since she definitely fits the standard Nicki’s criticizing, but she needs to read up more on intersectionality and where black women are coming from before getting into fights about it. I think they both stumbled here, but Taylor definitely comes off worse for it.

  37. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

Kim K sneaks in with a pearler. Where’s this girl been? 🙂

  38. Alyce says:

Taylor should never have responded. That said, Nicki was clearly talking about her. She only broadened the conversation after she got called on it.

  39. Halvin Carris says:

Someone should take Taylor’s cell phone/internet privileges away for a week… Seriously though, she should have just let Nicki just vent her frustrations and stay the hell outta it… Taylor, honey, sweetheart, everything ISN’T about you…

  40. Norman Bates' Mother says:

All they ever talk about is them, them, them and I don’t think either is capable of or even willing to make valid arguments about these issues apart from themselves. Nicki wouldn’t talk about racial issues if people liked her crappy video or if Iggy wasn’t taking her spot, Taylor only speaks about feminism when someone criticizes her. Otherwise both stay quiet. Plus Taylor is a hypocrite – women shouldn’t pit other women against each other, but she can write a mean girl anthem, which message is basically – girl, don’t step to me or I will make my famous friends and fans hate you, and all is well?

  41. Brittney B says:

I fully agree that the media treats black women, especially those who assert their sexuality without conforming to any whitewashed ideals, very differently from white women. However, “Anaconda” was popular because it was RIDICULOUS. There was nothing innovative or smart about its choreography, and in my opinion it actually fueled those who fetishize and satirize black bodies.

  42. Unmade_bed says:

I’m not sure why anyone likes Nikki Milaj at all. I understand that people like looking at oversized body parts, but why do people claim that she is doing something special with choreography or music?

  43. HEJ says:

Is it just me or was it almost like Taylor was saying no dont focus on issues such as racism come join me in the fight against the men.
i don’t get the comment that perhaps Nicki was snubbed by a man?

  44. nica says:

Of course I believe Kim and I also believe it’s just a coincidence that her husband said the exact same thing to Taylor when he jumped on stage……

    • word says:

LOL yeah. Kim has to put her name/face/butt into anything and everything in the media. She can’t stand it when any other woman is getting attention. Plus you can clearly see that pic of her is photoshopped, they cut her ass right out of it.

  45. Kingsbury says:

“Minaj looks petty, like it’s a personal beef instead of a larger problem in the music industry. ”

Um, wow. MINAJ is the one that looks petty? Not Taylor who clearly started this? This article is really off-base.

  46. Bella says:

I believe everything Nicki said was true, especially when considering the MTV awards acted like Miley Cyrus was amazing and wonderful when she was “acting black” as she so eloquently put it (I’m eye rolling hard here), but I also think maybe Nicki’s video wasn’t nominated because it was like soft core porn. MTV doesn’t have balls the way it used to. Music videos have died, and MTV isn’t the fierce and brave network it once was when Madonna was queen of the world, and Howard Stern was showing up with his ass cheeks hanging out, or Rose McGowan was showing up naked under a dress made out of chains.

Aside from that, I don’t understand why Taylor found it necessary to respond to Nicki. Nicki’s comments weren’t even directly shading Taylor, they were shading MTV and the entire industry for favoring white women, which they undeniably do all the time, with the exception of Beyonce who wears her hair long and blonde and is light-skinned with fair features. These points were all discussed to a great degree on this site after Amandla took on Kylie. There is a bias in the world and in the music industry. Taylor acted like Nicki’s comment was saying, “Eff Taylor Swift” when in reality she was only pointing out the fact that Taylor and others are favored for being skinny and white. Since that wasn’t a direct hit at her, she should’ve just kept her mouth shut. Nicki’s beef isn’t with Taylor, it’s with the people who show a bias toward people who look like Taylor. I agree with Nicki’s response to Taylor in which she said, “you should speak on this.” She’s right. If Taylor wants to find her voice and talk about women being pitted against each other, stand up with Nicki and ask why white women are favored. This is centuries old in the entertainment bizz. Why not make a move to finally progress? Taylor likes to play it safe–if it isn’t about fairy princesses and magic spells and becoming best of friends with everyone, she meets she’s not about it.

I also completely agree with everyone who said that Taylor thinks she knows all about feminism now that she hangs out with Lena Dunham. I think Taylor thinks that by becoming best of friends with every woman she meets that she is a feminist, and maybe she is one deep down, I don’t know and can’t say for sure, but from my perspective it seems like Taylor does things that are self-serving.

  48. meh says:

I already love Nicki, but now I sort of love Kim for this.

  49. MBP says:

The media is proving Nicki’s points by framing this as a Twitter beef or spat or them “taking jabs” and all that crap. It’s the angry-black-woman narrative.

Nicki’s original tweet didn’t reference Taylor. It may have been a subtweet, but if so the best bet would have been to ignore it. Instead it went all #notallwhitewomen . Taylor needs to learn the world doesn’t revolve around her. She is an example of how the system works, that’s all.

  50. lile says:

Personally, I am sick of Nicki and her constant trash talking about other artists. Why can’t she just focus on her own music? Maybe focus on writing and performing something with lyrics that aren’t so dang nasty. Maybe that will get you more noms Nicki. I mean, come on….Truffle Butter, Anaconda, Feeling Myself….she is the Kartrashian and Kanye of music, all rolled up into one. Kartrashian = Nasty and Kanye = WAY oversized ego. And its true that she is not speaking for other artists, though she might try to say she is. She is about as self-absorbed as it gets.

  51. lile says:

Not to mention the obvious….that her fake a$$ cheeks and fake boobs are the ONLY thing keeping her from being as “slim” as Taylor Swift.

  52. Mellie says:

Shut up Nicki and go count your millions… if you really want to address issues regarding women’s rights, take on some of your fellow rap musicians whose lyrics often state derogatory comments towards women…that is way more of a problem than some skinny white girl beating you out of a moon man statue. I imagine you might get something out of the other THREE categories in which you are nominated. It’s not like your “video” was shut out of the nominations. #firstworldproblems

  53. me says:

This all seems very fishy. Meek Mill went after Drake on twitter as well…then Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars did the same (jokingly though). Did MTV put them up to this just to bring some hype to the awards show in exchange for some money or perks or extra pr?

I miss the days when artists were too cool to care about things like VMA nominations or Grammy awards. You think Janis Joplin sat around crying because mainstream music didn’t give her awards? You think Jim Morrison would have been on Twitter moaning about getting passed over for a Grammy? Ugh.

Neither of these women represent anything about women’s rights, not to me anyway. Both are plastic caricatures that are churned out by “the machine,” which is run by powerful studio executives (mostly men). They are “sold” to the public via accepted media outlets and promote the messages that capitalist entities want us to believe. To perceive them as anything but a product would be a mistake. Even this twitter fight only serves to bring more press to both.

Aaand now the talentless triscuit has fodder for her next album. Sigh.

Dear God in Heaven: Please strike the word “feminism” from all celebrity mouths…since you are unable to bless them with knowledge of the word’s actual meaning!!!!!!

  58. Saks says:

Anaconda is a terrible song anyway. I don’t like Nicki at all and I don’t care much about Taylor but I kind of liked her first tweet.

Also ashamed to admit this but I founded Kim’s tweet was hilarious!

  59. TessD says:

Minaj is racist! “White media”? Imagine Swift calling the media “black?” WTF

  60. me says:

Nicki got the nom for best female video though.

For overall best vid the noms are:

    Beyoncé – “7/11″
Ed Sheeran – “Thinking Out Loud”
Taylor Swift ft. Kendrick Lamar – “Bad Blood”
Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars – “Uptown Funk”
    Kendrick Lamar – “Alright”

Nicki just sounds bitter. She is up for quite a few awards for a video that was honestly not that great. Anyways, let’s hope Beyonce wins this category because I can’t stand Kanye getting all bothered whenever Beyonce loses.

  61. TessD says:

What is this Minaj girl talking about? I remember going to a comedy club with my good friend who is curvy, thick girl and the club being full of black guys. She got all the attention. I, the skinny blonde, was completely ignored. To each their own.

    • Livealot says:

Girl judging by your last comment and this one, my educated guess is that you are slow or incompetent.

“Mainstream” meaning majority… which newsflash- consists of white men. Their ideal woman looks more like Taylor than Nicki. So your whole anecdote about your curvy friend getting a bunch of love from black guys is irrelevant ALSO your whole spiel about NIcki being “racist” because she described mainstream media as white…which it is.

Please don’t ever let me have to defend Nicki again.

      • TessD says:

Read it carefully again – “to each their own.” And drop the “don’t make me…” phrase from your vocabulary, would you? Learn to express your view intelligently first.

  62. Amy M. says:

Anaconda is a terrible song and video so not the right example for Nicki to get all offended about not being nominated. I agree with her that women of color/all shapes and sizes are often overlooked for white singers/white female singers who are skinny and blonde like Taylor. But please don’t use your song ripped off of an 80s song about an ode to butts to demonstrate inequality–it trivializes the dialog and maks it look like she’s complaining her song about butts didn’t get nominated.

    • Livealot says:

      This.

Not to mention that Nicki is the queen of throwing rocks and hiding her hands.

  63. G says:

yet a curvy black woman is the biggest artist on the planet and adored by white people… or did she forget about Beyonce for a minute?

  64. word says:

I don’t get Nicki’s point. Taylor Swift was the only white woman nominated for Video of the Year. The only other woman nominated for that award was Beyonce. The other 3 noms are all men… Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, and Kendrick Lamar. I don’t get it. Of course Taylor is going to assume Nicki was talking about her video. I mean Nicki has the right to feel any way she wants but why not focus on the awards she was nominated for…like best female video !

  65. EricaV says:

One of the best songs on Nicki’s new album has the lyric “I’m not into fake industry parties or fake agendas.” seems like she forgot that when she got all worked up about not getting nominated for a VMA. Not a Grammy or a Tony or an Oscar, an MTV Video Music Award.

Taylor didn’t need to clapback but Nicki was clearly talking about Taylor’s video as NO OTHER VOTY nominee had a group of women with slim bodies in it. Nick was shading Taylor and needs to own that. Taylor needs to not interject herself even if she was being shaded.

    • me says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if the opening act of the VMA’s will be Nicki and Taylor doing some sort of mash up of their songs. This could be nothing more than one big publicity stunt.

  66. Hotmess says:

That anaconda had no class just ass

  67. Victoria1 says:

It’s MTV… I thought they only had teen mom shows? I can’t take this feud seriously

    • TessD says:

I wouldn’t put it past them to make the whole thing up. MTV awards would be a boring affair without a little scandal.
