The Weeknd on whether he loves Bella Hadid: ‘I don’t know… I don’t think so’

Over the past six months or so, I’ve become a little bit obsessed with The Weeknd. He’s a Canadian singer/songwriter/pop star with soul, straight out of Toronto. “Earned It” feels like it’s already a classic, and “Can’t Feel My Face” and “Wicked Games” are two of my current workout jams. Before now, it really hadn’t occurred to me to pay attention to The Weeknd’s personal life, but that was before I read this striking and interesting profile in the NY Times – you can read the full piece here. His real name is Abel Tesfaye and he’s just 25 years old. He’s kind of short (5’7”) and his dreadlocks are amazing/sexy. Oh, and he’s dating Bella Hadid, Gigi Hadid’s 18-year-old sister. Here are some highlights from the NYT piece:

Changing his career from dark & moody music to pop-soul: ‘‘I felt I had to change who I was,’’ he says. His new album, ‘‘Beauty Behind the Madness,’’ is the end result of a year’s worth of molting old habits, a creative upheaval that has begun to teleport him from the margins right to pop’s center.

He’s obsessed with early Michael Jackson: ‘‘These kids, you know, they don’t have a Michael Jackson. They don’t have a Prince. They don’t have a Whitney. Who else is there? Who else can really do it at this point?’’

Learning how to make pop music: In the early days, producers ‘‘would always try to structure it, make it more into a song, and I was always a punk: ‘I hate major chords. I hate structure. I want this song to be eight minutes long.’ It would kill them…. My head-space now is, I love choruses. A chorus is not easy.’’

Bella Hadid shows up for the interview: [There are four SUVs] waiting to drive him and his crew uptown for a performance at the Museum of Modern Art. Moments later, the 18-year-old model Bella Hadid stepped out of the building, her black jacket draped over a sheer black top. She was asked to stop for [a photo], too. She demurred, wordlessly ducking into one of the other trucks.

What he says about Bella and love: A couple of weeks later, Tesfaye refused to talk about Hadid. Asked if he was in love, he replied: ‘‘I don’t know, to be honest with you. I don’t think so. Maybe. It’s no, it’s yes, it’s maybe.’’

[From The NYT]

By most accounts, Bella and The Weeknd have only been dating a few months, maybe three at most. I don’t think that’s long enough for your guy to be making public declarations of love in the NYT, so I don’t fault him for playing coy with the love question. Then again, if he didn’t want to be asked, why in the world did Bella show up when he was with a NYT journalist? Basically, Bella and The Weeknd are happening and it’s pretty serious, but not serious enough that he’s going to declare his love publicly.

Bella’s giving me Jessica Biel vibes. Right?

    His voice. So beautiful.
The Hadids bother me for no good reason. Just bland faces, bland personalities and nepotism.

    • QQ says:

a full comment cosign from me

    • Dani says:

      Nepotism at it’s finest.

    • Shannon1972 says:

      +3
“Model” is quickly becoming a euphemism for “my parents are obscenely wealthy or famous, and I don’t actually have a job, but I take a lot of selfies and am kind of pretty, so let’s just call me a model”.

    • SK says:

I think they’re gorgeous and if nepotism helps bring back models with some curves then I’m all for it! These girls are shaped like their mum – an 80s model – so they have boobs and hips and bums and their bodies are just lovely. I much prefer this body type to the straight up and down figures of most of today’s models. I also think their faces are very interesting. They seem balanced despite their privilege and Gigi is apparently very smart. They also seem like a close family. I like them!

      • Adrien says:

I don’t think they are aspiring to look like Yolanda in her heyday. Curvy? Hehe. GH is thin for a swmsuit model.

    • Lo8 says:

Her Father will bother you too once you read the article about him on the Daily Mail. Terrible family….

  2. Ellie says:

Don’t change for them, Abel! I like his darkness. We don’t need another wannabe MJ, we have Bruno Mars. (Although the Weeknd’s old cover of “Dirty Diana,” “DD” is pretty amazing, Kaiser, you should listen to it if you haven’t.)

    • Eva says:

Agree, i love his darkness! Such a unique atmosphere to his music on trilogy.

ETA: His dating someone so young does put me off him somewhat though.

      • QQ says:

That’s my feelings on the dating thing, is so … NAAAHHHH Bro , Come ON! Do Better!

But Then I think he already did The Zone ( possibly Drake’s Finest Moment Too?) and realize..aaahh you probably did already,. it’s all downhill from here on out

  3. Norman Bates' Mother says:

“No comment” would be a far better answer. He is a pop star on the rise and wants to have fun living a cliche, dating a barely legal model/socialite. They’ve been together for a short period of time. I don’t know why the NYT journo thought it’s a good question to ask and why The Weekend decided to answer it. As for why she decided to show up – because she is an aspiring model with a much more successful sister and now her name is in NYT.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Yes, I thought it was a tactless answer. People have such a lack of filter these days. Just say it’s private, or I don’t discuss my feelings for other people in interviews or no comment.

  4. INeedANap says:

I guess 25 and 18 isn’t too bad, and they’re both in the entertainment industry so those ages are more fluid, but still: in the real world, that is someone in grad school/career with a new high school grad.

  5. L&Mmommy says:

I love the Weeknd, his music is really good, his voice just gets to me. And Bella is gorgeous, Gigi’s beauty is so generic but I think Bella has an interesting face.

  6. gilmore says:

I love his druggie a** so much, earned it is such a jam. Tabloids have such a warped view of celebrities “dating” though like they could just be hooking up, it could be very casual. Those scenarios never seem to exist I’ve noticed it’s love or nothing at all.

  7. Franca says:

I heard some of his songs and they were full of misogyny. Not my thing.

  8. lunchcoma says:

Good? That’s too big of an age gap at Bella’s age, and it’d be better if it didn’t get too serious.

  9. sigghh says:

Saw him in NYC on a date with another woman so yeah….he don’t love Bella lol

  10. Nayru says:

Mid twenties dating a teenager? That’s a no go for me.
“Hey guys I would love to meet you at happy hour, but my girl is not legal to drink, so we are just gonna hang at the mall”

  11. Lucy says:

I’m obsessed with his music, but the age gap kinda bugs me.

  12. QQ says:

    A) His Comments gave me a Hearty Cackle cause i DONT see it for these chicks

    B) Ive Been stanning since Trilogy was Mixed Tapes Im COMPLETELY and UTTERLY gone, and I only Up to Now had My friend In Cali and Big Quint Online reviews to stan OUT about this man Like a Child SO NOW YOU’RE IT TOO KAISER!

I mean I can go ON about his music FOR DAYYYYSS ( I know a lot of people didn’t see it for kissland but i still play that DAILY, his hooks on In Vein OMG!! new cd is gonna probably sound a LOT like that Odd look song he had with Kavinsky methinks) and how crazy I am about it BUT that said I was SO OFFENDED I think I texted Mimif throwing a Hissy this weekend when I found out he was seeing this, CHILD

For one it puts him only about five minutes ahead from Tyga

For seconds as I posited to Mimif I worried about the music, it’ll get commercial as FUUUUCCCCCCKKK (is his moment, i don’t begrudge him it) I begrudge him using Taylor Swift composers and lyricists cause he WRITES and he writes well so this whole him on stage with TS besides being so Off brand for them both it’s a harbinger of possible too many pop things to come

Anyways, fellow Weeknd stans, let have about your favorite songs

    • Ellie says:

      Yep, all of this ^.

Ahh, House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls, Wanderlust, Montreal, Coming Down, so many amazing ones. Not gonna pretend I haven’t participated in many a drunken singalong to Wicked Games with my friends. You?

      • QQ says:

GIRL!! Listen???!!!!! and getting high and start belting LISTEN MA I”LL GIVE YOU ALL OF ME, GET ME OFF OF THIS I NEED CONFIDENCE IN MYSEEEELLLLLFFF

LORDT! also I think my and my GFs could not move past Kissland for Months… Pretty is what MJ woulda sang to a girl Today! OMG and Tears in The Rain?? Those Lyrics?? (I should’ve let you leave, But I let you watch me slip away..)

  13. word says:

I really really like his music. Not fond of the fact he’s dating a teen, though she is an adult so it is legal. I think he’s living out his high school years…this guy is a “former fat kid” (sorry don’t want that to come off rude or insensitive), but he is probably trying to date popular girls that remind him of ones from high school lol.

  14. NGBoston says:

Love his voice. I can’t feel my face when I listen to it.

I saw one of hos Music videos with some rappers he collaborated on though and it was horrible. Completely degrading to women and all street lingo about the nasty sexual
things imma do to u woman type of sh8t.

With a talent like that, I can deff see mixing it up a little but tbh– he is going beneath hsi level with that hardcore rap bs. JMO

  15. georgia says:

He sang with Taylor Swift at her concert in jersey a few weeks ago. It was great. I never heard of him but my best friend loves him. She did the fangirl scream and jump and all.

  16. bcgirl says:

    please no more Hadids. please.

  17. lizounette says:

why are people not more freaked out by his hair? it’s soo bizarre and needs to be shaved – stat.

    • amunet ma'at says:

Why should ppl be freaked out? Personally, I like small neat locs, and his are the bulky variety but it’s obviously clean and maintained.

  18. Adrien says:

If Jennifer Lawrence learned to control her feelings and not give us some epic facial expression to every situation, she looks exactly like Bella. Bella also gives me some Bridget Moynahan vibe.
