Emma Thompson: ‘If I see yet another Spider-Man, I’m going to hang myself’

wenn22825120

Here are some photos of Emma Thompson protesting outside of the Shell headquarters in London yesterday. She brought props, and she “defaced” part of the Shell building with some really pretty polar bear footprints. Her protest was against Shell’s new lease for Arctic drilling. Meanwhile, as luck would have it, Emma also has a lengthy new interview with Vulture – go here to read. She chats about feminism, aging, Hollywood and a lot more. Some highlights:

The on-screen romantic age differences: “The age thing is insane. It was ever thus. I remember saying years and years ago, when I was 35, that they’d have to exhume somebody to play my leading man … Nothing’s changed in that regard. If anything, it’s got worse….I remember somebody saying to me that I was too old for Hugh Grant, who’s like a year younger than me, in Sense and Sensibility. I said, ‘Do you want to go take a flying leap?’”

The glut of superhero movies: “I loved the original Superman with Chris Reeve, because there was a real tongue-in-cheek-ness to it. After a while, you do get a tiny bit cynical about it. The fact that I know they’re going to win out in the end has now slightly interfered with my continuing to go to those movies. If I see yet another Spider-Man, I’m going to have to actually hang myself. I can’t do it anymore! They’re all marvelous, but how many times can you make this franchise, for crying out loud?… I’m up for Wonder Woman, totally.”

Feminism: “I’ve been a card-carrying, radical feminist since I was 19. Most women who I would want to listen to wouldn’t have any problem at all with the word feminist. It’s bizarre. Any woman who says they’re not a feminist is basically saying that they don’t believe in equal rights for women. Any woman who says, ‘I hate my bum, I hate my body,’ is essentially expressing a kind of misogyny. All women who come up with that need to think very carefully about what it is they’re saying. Including me!”

Oscar awards seasons: “I’ve sensed that there’s more financial gain riding on awards season now, and I think I speak for other actors when I say that the lot of us feel quite pressurized by that. The requirements of that season — constantly dressing up and trotting down carpets — is quite a lot now, because there are so many awards shows. People literally put aside three months of their lives to do it. Seems quite a lot, doesn’t it?”

Production/promotional schedules: “I know how difficult and demanding it is, for instance, for all of the James Bond actors to make a Bond movie. The movie takes a long time, but then you spend something like 18 months promoting it! That’s quite hard, I think.”

Donald Trump is a disaster: “Let’s face it, the Republicans have chosen Donald Trump to run — can you take anything they say seriously, on any level? I suppose you can, in the sense that many of them have power, and that’s something you guys are really going to have to address, because it’s a disaster. I think it’s terrifying.”

[From Vulture]

She also chats about how she’s learned to be “philosophical” with her screenplays, and she doesn’t mind when her scripts are re-written or when she’s asked to rewrite someone else’s scripts. As for the rest of it… well, I love Emma and I’ve always loved her. I think she’s truly a sh-t-talking feminist and a ballsy advocate for a number of great causes. Others may disagree. And they can take a flying leap.

Also, mom jeans.

This woman can do no wrong in my eyes. She’s the best!!

  2. Dhavynia says:

Mom jeans or not still love her and agree with her way of thinking

    • Santia says:

Right? So the eff what about the jeans?? People focus on the most asinine things. This woman has real substance.

    • Reeely?? says:

I’m so wrapped up in this anti-feminist culture…I’m just getting an education at age 47 and CB has helped. I want to get past the fear of mom jeans wrinkles and cellulite obsessions. I want to be smart and bold like Emma Thompson. I want to get to the other side – there is more to life than self judgment!

    • vauvert says:

Who cares about the jeans? Maybe she wants to be comfy.
Love her and her outspoken feminism. Way to go Emma!

  3. AB says:

    Love her

  4. Leah says:

She was on newsnight last night calling out the british government for their inhumane handling of the immigration crisis. I like her A LOT! Go mom jeans!

  5. TessD says:

    Inspiring AND intelligent actress!

  6. Caitlin's mom says:

Love her. And she’s totally correct about Spider-Man! Enough is enough!

    • Santia says:

There is no creativity left in the world anymore.

5 years ears ago, when my little brown boy got into superheroes, we decided to make his room into a superhero den. We got the usuals, of course – batman, superman, the x-men – but also wanted to include some superheroes who looked like him. Not a single one to be found. How crazy is it that? And now, all we really have is Falcon. Would it kill them to have some brown superheroes?? Women??

      • Beth No. 2 says:

Storm? And I remember reading that the new Captain America in the comics is now a black guy. They have also made Thor into a woman. Wonder Woman is going to be featured in the upcoming Batman VS Superman movie, and Harley Quinn would be in the Suicide Squad film. A Captain Marvel is also in the works. There’s still some way to go, so hopefully your son would get a more diversified superhero bedroom den soon! 😀

      • Santia says:

        Thanks, Beth No. 2. 🙂

      • Marianne says:

War Machine, Storm, Black Panther, Blade, Nick Fury (newer comics though), Luke Cage…those are the ones that popped to my mind first.

      • Marianne says:

I just remembered Bishop as well.

  7. Miran says:

    Emma is my spirit animal.

  8. Kaya says:

    What a refreshing interview!

  9. Meowsy says:

Its weird, I highly enjoy her as an actress but I don’t like her much. When she says “Any woman who says, ‘I hate my bum, I hate my body,’ is essentially expressing a kind of misogyny.”, is that her point of view or an example because I’m not up for other people telling me how to think.

    • moot says:

Stop it. No one is telling you how to think. They’re just asking that you think about what you say.

    • Lucrezia says:

Huh. I have the completely opposite view. She’s not one of my favourite actresses, but I like her as a person. (Not that I think she’s perfect. She was ignorant enough to sign a pro-Polanski petition, though I do have to give her credit for later withdrawing her support.)

I don’t quite understand how you can have a problem with her misogyny statement. She’s just saying “don’t hate your body”. I’d rank it alongside statements such as “brush your teeth” and “don’t shove a fork into the toaster”. Technically that *is* telling you what to do/think, but it’s also utterly reasonable advice.

      • Beth No. 2 says:

I like Emma, but I also thought that statement felt a bit off. Not because I thought she was preaching to others what to think, but cos somebody who says “I hate my bum; I hate my body” could be due to low self-confidence and not necessarily misogyny or ingrained prejudice towards women. “Misogyny” seemed like a bit of a hyperbolic word to use here.

      • ninal says:

But I think low self image is due in part to comparing oneself to a set standard that’s shaped by misogynistic concepts. So it is interrelated really and her statement insists people to try to understand why they hold themselves to such standards in the first place.

      • FLORC says:

Don’t hate your body, but don’t consider it flawless and leave no room to improve your health. Don’t alter it to suit another if you are happy ad healthy since you’re the 1 living in it. That point is solid and too complex to be glossed over in short statements. Hyperbolic statements are sort of her thing anyways.

And yea. She’s telling you what to think in a way. You can choose not to.

I like her fine. I think it’s silly to raise her up as this flawless creature. She’s made some mistakes that are overlooked. She’s who she is.

      • Meowsy says:

Sorry but its no ones place to tell me how to feel about my own body, hiding it behind “internalized misogyny” is still a backhanded way to tell me how to think. “Don’t think this because if you think this it implies you think a certain way and I’m only telling you for your own good.” Its still condescending.

    • Sam says:

I’m mixed on it. Personally, I dislike the admonition that “you must like yourself just the way you are, no exceptions!” It’s dumb. Maybe I’m different because I work out a TON, but to me the crux is being able to differentiate between the things I actually can change and those I cannot. Personally, hating your current state isn’t a awful thing if your current state is BAD. Like, for example, I went through a fairly serious depressive episode at one point and was really abusing my body with inactivity, horrible foods, etc. I DID hate that body, and I was right to hate it, because it was a body that was being abused and mistreated and it was showing it. I didn’t need a woman telling me that it was misogynistic to hate my current state – I needed somebody to tell me to shape up and start loving my body by taking actual care of it. All that body positive talk was, for me at the time, a crutch that I used to dismiss legit concerns about my state. And that’s where it gets tricky, because so many people can’t differentiate among the two.

    • Aila says:

It’s not her opinion. She’s talking about internalized misogyny — the things women say that are misogynist and they don’t even realize it because it is so pervasive in our society.

    • Keaton says:

I love Emma. But that type of thing annoys me too. I like what she’s TRYING to get across but I hate the way she expressed it right then.

  10. paola says:

I agree, she’s right and I love her.

Can we take a moment to pity me now? I’ve just found out that I share my birthday (today) with Charlie Sheen.

  11. QQ says:

SAY IT AGAIN EMMA!! My F*cking God with these freaking superhero this and superhero that Movie, everything doesnt have to be Almodovar or Atonement but good God these summer/popcorn/big explosions/destroy a city/magical superhero/transformers from outer space- indistinguishable-from-on- superhero-to-the=other-movies… Im super over that

    • paola says:

They’re so boring and still my boyfriend wants to watch every single one of them.
How much different can they all be from one another?? It’s always the same freaking plot.

      • QQ says:

        So does Mine Paola, and bring his real obnoxious brother with him to screen Yell and spittle at the movie and afterward chat and casting News ad Naseaum but I pretty much quit playing along during the last transformers and now he KNOWS I will be asked Not assumed for a willing participant and we discuss during previews which movies i’m NOT even gonna bother with and viceversa, Ive been able to skip a LOT of crap this way;

Any first showings of things Avengers, he can go first or with his sibling , Thor Movies, Jurassic No, AntMan, TMNT, Fantastic No…

      • Bridget says:

My husband has his Marvel favorites that he makes sure to drag me to as well. I consider myself fortunate that it’s kind of a production to go to a movie nowadays because we have to deal with babysitters, so he at least picks and chooses what he really wants to see.

      • Bae says:

QQ, can I ask you a question? Why do you capitalize random words in the middle of sentences? I’m not being mean or anything, just genuenly curious.

      • QQ says:

Bridget: Oh we’re single but with not exactly similar schedules so I Make him go when they are both off and I’m Not, LOL, also though we have the Understanding I have to sit through a few of these a year but this stopped being an automatic assumption when the Next superhero Trailer rolls on

Bae: NP Cause my boss makes me type his time sheets and correspondence and memos “In This Manner All F*cking Day” and also not being a native speaker etc I just toggle all day between screens and Spanish calls and so in so i find it hard to turn it off ( which also happens to my English if I spend all weekend long with my family)

      • Bridget says:

QQ: Um, TMNT?!? Does he not have eyes?

      • QQ says:

Bridhet… Sis …the taste level is questionable as f*ck and he knows it

      • paola says:

        QQ
What do you mean you’re not a native speaker! Wtf you’re English is on point !
I love your comments (and your taste in shoes)

      • QQ says:

Lol oh no No Paola I have a HYYYUUUUGGGEEE accent ( ask Mimif!) I was born and raised in Venezuela, I came here at 16

      • paola says:

Whoa I’ve been backpacking in Venezuela for 4 months and I LOVED IT.
My cousin is from Caracas and I love his accent.
        You’re the besst QQ.

      • QQ says:

YAAASSS PAOLA! So many first generation Italianos in Venezuela still!!

      • Jonathan says:

@QQ- well, holy hell, I thought your ‘random’ capitalisations were intentional for impact & comedic and/or dramatic effect, they’re usually so impeccably placed….I’m staggered to discover English isn’t your first language. Your posts are among the best written on these boards, very entertaining.

I’ll have to read your comments with the appropriate accent from now on!

    • korra says:

AMEN! Shout it from the mountaintops I’m so tired of these money printing spectacles.

Lol and her comment about someone being exhumed to play her love interest lmao!

    • Marianne says:

And thats fine if you’re over them. But, there is obviously still a huge market for them.

  12. minx says:

    I’ve been a fan from way back–Henry V, Peter’s Friends, Howard’s End.

  13. Meow says:

I love Emma. Beautiful and brilliant on so many levels.

  14. ashley says:

Great interview, she’s spot on about donald trump.

    • Amy Tennant says:

Trump is a disaster.. but I don’t think in any sense have the Republicans “chosen” him. If anything, I think they’re scrambling to get away from him. (And I’m a liberal)

      • derpshooter says:

At first I read your comment as “Trump is a dumpster” and I laughed. Would have been true too!

  15. Elisa the I. says:

I LOVE HER!!! she is a breath of fresh air!

  16. FingerBinger says:

I love Emma! That is all.

  17. Franca says:

I agree with most of what she says, even though I find her annoying as a person.

    Also
“Any woman who says, ‘I hate my bum, I hate my body,’ is essentially expressing a kind of misogyny” – while this may be true, it does come across as judgemental. I feel like a lot of women who never stuggled with their appearance can never quite understand just how hard it is.

And the award show bit – poor actors, wearing free dresses and free jewellery while eating free food and drinking free booze and getting free goodie bags. For 3 whole months? How on earth do they manage?

    • Leah says:

She says including myself, so that indicates self awareness. She has been/is one of those women herself. What she is saying is that women need to accept themselves i guess. In this day and age kids growing up are being bombarded with this porn body image i.e kardashians etc with their all their surgery. Its incredibly anti women.

      • Sam says:

I think it’s a fine line. Accepting things you can’t change is one thing – a short person can’t be made tall (save for shoes), and a tall person can’t be made short, etc. There are things about your body that are not changeable. I think the issue comes when “body positivity” is used as a battering ram against legit concern. I have a friend who is a lovely person, who was broken up with a few years ago and has basically gone on a extended food, booze and smoking binge. She’s gained at least 100 pounds and is beginning to show various health effects of her lifestyle. If you try to bring up maybe trying to be a little healthier to her, she goes right into the old “I love my body as is and I think it’s awesome!” But it’s not an awesome body – it’s a body riddled with preventable health issues and she’s using a well-intentioned idea to justify self-abuse.

I get what Emma was trying to say, but then again, I as a general rule don’t listen to conventionally good looking women (and yes, Emma may not be a model, but she’s always been attractive – hence, why she gets work) pontificate about body acceptance, since they’re not exactly hurting under current standards. Emma is feeling the pinch now because she’s older. She’s still attractive, she’s thin, she’s still got currency as a woman. I take body acceptance more seriously coming from women who actually bear the brunt of the intolerance – the fat, the dark, the disabled, etc. You know, women that actually get told how undesirable they are on a routine basis. I can appreciate Emma’s sentiment, but I just feel like she’s not the most effective messenger.

    • moot says:

I think Emma has surely struggled about her appearance. Look at the comment about Hugh Grant being too young for her. It comes from the same thinking, which is basically that Emma, particularly at 35, was not “hot” enough for Hugh at 34. That is misogyny.

      • Franca says:

She didn’t say SHE struggled with her appearance. Someone else told her she’s too old for him and she told them to get lost.

      • moot says:

Well, struggled about her appearances not internally, but externally for work. (Though, perhaps at an earlier time, she did struggle internally and came out the other end thinking, hey, it’s not my problem, it’s yours—who knows.)

The point is it IS a struggle for all women in the movie industry to the degree that at some point or other they are all judged on their appearance and not solely on their acting ability.

But this is ever the case in acting. I have a friend who is below average (Tom Cruise) height for men and it was tough on him getting passed over for leading stage roles, even though he was a better singer than the men he was passed over for. It is based on appearance and far less on talent. Always.

And it’s a struggle for the artist because if they “don’t look the part” they have to struggle to get what they want by going further to prove they’re the best/better fit.

So, struggle isn’t just an internal thing trying to be okay with it for yourself. If you’re in the industry, you’re struggling against the decision-makers who won’t hire you because you don’t look the way that appeals to them.

  18. lucy2 says:

Cue Titus Andromeda singing from “Spiderman Too: Too Many Spidermen”
“And I will crush that spiderman….and then that other spiderman…and all the spidermen…til I’m the spiderman!”

Love Emma – she is passionate and willing to step up and speak out about things she believes in.

  19. Betti says:

And I didn’t think i could love her more.

She always makes for a good interview – crazy as a box of frogs. I always watch when she’s on Graham Norton – those 2 make me cry. The last one where Lenny Kravitz almost flashed her – LOL.

  20. Polly says:

Love. Emma. What I wouldn’t give to go get beers with her.

  21. Elvis says:

    EMMA, I LOVE YOU FOREVER.

  22. Felice. says:

This wouldn’t have happened if they followed Miles Morales in the new film.

  23. MickeyM says:

    This post made my day.

  24. Lucy says:

The fabulosity is THIS. At this point I pretty much worship her.

  25. Zan says:

She is unafraid to speak her mind, take action in support of her principles and wear her mom jeans. I love it all.

  26. Nori says:

I love her! And I agree about Spider-man, lol.

  27. Alice says:

Emma is something else. Love her!!

  28. Irene says:

I love the superhero movies, but i would rather gnaw off my own arms than sit through another stupid Spider-Man reboot.

  29. Ginger says:

Sense and Sensibility is one of my favorite films. I’ve seen it so many times (since I own it) and never once have I questioned or even so much as raised an eyebrow at her and Hugh Grants roles in the film. Besides that’s the film she met her much younger hottie husband on if I recall correctly ??? So go Emma!!!

  30. belle de jour says:

I take your point, Jovb, but feel that your outrage may be misplaced; there are all sorts of feminists – and this one enjoys a website where I can applaud Emma Thompson’s fierceness on all things important whilst taking a friendly chuckle at her mom jeans. Also: Emma Thomson’s humor is often self-deprecating, and she has a healthy sense of the absurd.

Kaiser, the author of the post, seems to understand this perfectly well – hence the wry tone of voice and the placement of that last little abbreviated observation at the end of a comment that has effusively praised all things Emma.

I’d rather keep open the option to be both a devout feminist involved in a lot of actions and a snarky observer who can snicker at some fashion choices without losing the main plot.

Edit: in the middle of my post, it looks like Jovb’s original comment has been deleted.

  31. Whitney says:

I absolutely adore her. She’s so real and down-to-earth, it’s a breath of fresh air. I wish more celebrities were like her.

  32. Chinoiserie says:

I usually agree with the age thing, but she was much too old to play her character Elinor in Sense and Sensibility and did not do a good job otherwise either. If younger actress had been cast so should have Hugh Grant been replaced for the age difference to remain just a couple of years at most.

And some people have said that they agree with what she says but that she is annoying which is pretty mush what I feel about her.

    • captain says:

@Chinoiserie I disagree. She was perfect, and Hugh was perfect, and their chemistry was perfect in this perfect movie.

    • L says:

@Chinoiserie I agree-I thought she and Hugh Grant had great chemistry-but she’s supposed to be 19! 19! And Marianne is supposed to be 16. She was way to old for that part. Sorry captain. She did a fantastic job on the screenplay, but casting herself in the lead was a bad step.

The most perfect person in that movie is Alan Rickman as Col. Brandon. LOVE him.

      • captain says:

Age is just a number! What was 19 then, is 27 now. Both she and Hugh were authentic, it wasn’t a case of looking 40 and behaving 16. Their story was absolutely convincing, if you take them just as people and don’t think about the number. Alan Rickman is always such a pleasure to watch! Even in Harry Potter I couldn’t help but like his character in a strange perverted way))) Okay, now I want to watch Sense and Sensibility again.

      • msd says:

She was definitely too old for Elinor, she said so herself. They had to change the character to make it fit. So was Grant, and almost everyone else. Winslet was good though. Not a great adaptation overall, very chocolate-boxy compared to the book.

  33. Tara says:

I love her too. Love love love!

  34. sassy says:

    is she wearing Kayne sneakers?

  35. boredblond says:

I have always been a fan, but honestly she isn’t the target audience for Spider-Man, and she should be savvy enough to know if the studio thinks there’s a big profit to be made..it’ll go on and on. As far as the self-criticism women heap on themselves, I wish she’d gone a bit further and remarked on the common practice of relying on others for their self-image…’do I look fat in these pants?’… Emma should acknowledge a lot of those images of skinny/surgical/stylist created perfection come from her fellow actors..I think you’re a fantastic woman and actor…but will always take ‘advice’ from celebs–on how to think, vote for, wear, contribute to, etc–with a gigantic grain of salt.

  36. MSat says:

The geeky kid in me who grew up on the Justice League, Avengers and so on is still loving the superhero movies. We finally live in a time when the special effects can make them look real. So I’m not ready to be done with them yet! We still have Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel and many other kickass female heroes to play with.

But as for everything else Emma said, yeah. I love her. She’s the real deal. She’s had some great roles and I’m sure she will have more in the future!

    • Marianne says:

I love superhero/comic books movie too. I get they’re not for everyone (and thats fine), but kind of silly for people to want them to stop altogether. Just don’t watch them if its not your thing. *shrugs*.

  37. Grant says:

“Exhume her leading man”… HAH! Too funny. And, unfortunately, too true!

  38. emma says:

get it Emma!!! I’d love to hang out with her.

  39. Stacey says:

Emma, Emma, Emma…. We love you, but sweartoGod, what are you thinking with this Jerry Lewis haircut and the worst pair or Mom jeans ever?? For God’s sake, woman, get some height in that lesbian haircut, and put on something that doesn’t make you look 70.

  40. Jessica says:

“Any woman who says, ‘I hate my bum, I hate my body,’ is essentially expressing a kind of misogyny.”

I don’t like what she says here. I hate my body not because of any sort of misogyny, but rather because I am overweight and unhealthy. There is nothing wrong or misogynistic with saying someone is unhealthy, or not liking your body because you are unhealthy.

  41. serena says:

Oh Emma preach!! I totally agree with her, I’m so sick of Spiderman.. there are already 5 movies out plus the new ones they’ll make with that new guy I don’t remember.. wtf, enough!

  42. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

LOVE Emma! But you’re all wrong – those are called Activist Jeans. It’s so fashion savvy peeps will pay attention to her cause & not her flipping jeans. Love polar bears too!!

  43. TopCat says:

I love Emma. Amazing actress. Really watchable and a very natural style. She never seems like she’s trying. She just seems to sink into the skin of her characters. Sad to read that issues that existed when Emma was coming up are still prevalent. I agree with her about superhero movies. I’m waiting for the tide to change. How many reboots do we need so close together?
