Pink thought Miley Cyrus’ VMA hosting job was ‘trash, gross & embarrassing’

Miley Cyrus

After almost a week, I can’t believe people are still talking about Miley Cyrus’ hosting gig at the VMAs. There was plenty to cover, from Miley’s beef with Nicki Minaj (which I still think was real) to her chronic cultural appropriation. As a follow up (and Miley’s team is so strategic yet invisible), Miley shot a NSFW pr0n shoot. Luckily, Azealia Banks spoke up and took the focus away from Miley’s girls by calling Miley (and everyone) “basic. Azealia can be insufferable, but that was a funny rant. Miley probably died at the very word “basic.

Now Pink is chiming in. She made these comments on her private Instagram (she deleted her public account in 2012), and someone leaked a screenshot. Here’s what Pink thought of what Miley did on Sunday night:

“I felt embarrassed and sad. And old. We’re getting old. But in all seriousness; I felt sad because music is supposed to inspire. It saved my life. This trash won’t save any kid’s life. In a world that is even scarier, who will stand up and have soul? Disenfranchised to say the least. Let down by my industry and peers. Beside Macklemore and pharell and bieber (pre-sob fest) and the weekend, Tori Kelly was dope too. The rest was gross and embarrassing and hard for this aging pop star to believe.”

[From Pink on Instagram]

Pink

So Pink is upset about the state of the music industry, which she says has changed from when she rose to stardom. I like Pink, but I think she forgot all about her own antics, especially in her “Slut Like You” song. Pink never climbed to thirsty heights like Miley, but she wasn’t a saint either. And — y’all are gonna kill me for this — Pink is a straight-up pop singer. Her songs are catchy but not particularly profound. I agree that Miley was pretty gross on VMAs night though. There’s no other way to describe that show.

For the official public record, Pink did publicly praise Tori Kelly on VMAs night.

Oh, and this tweet probably reveals the straight-up truth.

Hm. Really makes you wonder how many lives the VMA’s have saved…

ETA: It’s insane that she didn’t even mention the show’s blatant racism. That’s a pretty flagrant omission from her criticism.

  2. bettyrose says:

I’m not familiar with Pink’s work but her comments play right into Miley’s delusional sense of being a misunderstood rebel.

    • Shambles says:

Really good point. And it’s kind of funny– when Miley first chopped her hair off, she and P!nk wore it in almost the exact same style to the same awards show. There were a lot of side-by-side comparison photos, basically making the point that Miley was trying to “be” P!nk. If that’s true, must suck for Miley to hear this from someone she’s allegedly tried so hard to emulate.

      • Reeely?? says:

I fund it mean spirited of Pink or for any other artist to criticize Miley. Would everyone rather a revival of 1950s repression? This Disney breakout girl is exploring the alphabet of self expression with no holds barred. I support Miley wearing dreads too if she’s exploring the marijuana culture, so what? I think it’s beautiful to see young people in free overt expression. For me to be a rebel is to be sober and sexually conservative and that’s my personal choice. I say cut Miley some slack and enjoy her process.

    • Neb says:

Yup. I wish she would’ve took a stand without referencing being an “aging pop star”. It’s irrelevant because people young and old are thinking the same thing. Now Miley’s only going to think she’s cutting edge and that she’s ahead of the times because she’s such a rebellious social pioneer.

    • Emma - the JP Lover says:

@Bettyrose, who wrote: “I’m not familiar with Pink’s work but her comments play right into Miley’s delusional sense of being a misunderstood rebel.”

Just for you … here is a YouTube link that should play 14 of Pink’s hits in a row:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjVNlG5cZyQ&list=PLF41D2D6555E65925

The difference between Pink’s rebel days and Miley’s ‘act’ is that Pink’s message has always been “Some of us are different, we don’t fit in Society’s mode and bad sh$t happens, but that’s okay … we’re okay, too” and “Think about your actions because you’ll hurt more than ‘you.'” Miley’s message is “Look at ‘me!’ I’m SO hip, and edgy, and authentic and I’ve been sexual for a long time now, ain’t no thang … don’t I shock you? Don’t you just love me?”

Pink is an incredible song writer who brings emotion with her message (“Who Knew?” about her the end of her marriage and “Fu’king Perfect” are two of my favorite songs ever).

      • raincoaster says:

Well, and Pink really is up from nothing. She was a druggy club kid on the streets of Philly for her teen years, was she not? She’s bootstrapped her way up.

I don’t think calling her a pop singer is an insult, although it appears clearly meant to be. She IS a pop singer, and her songs alternate between “yeah, wahoo, grrrl power!” and “I’d die without you, you’re so horrible but I’m codependent” which is weird, but it’s authentically Pink.

Then again, there’s “Dear Mister President.”

Miley Cyrus is an ageing child star turned sex moppet; does anyone think of her music first when her name is mentioned? She’s got an excellent voice, but it’s not her real instrument. THIS, the gossip, the blogs, the photos, is.

  3. LookyLoo says:

Like her or not, Pink writes her own songs and they are NOT shallow bubblegum songs. Some of her songs are deep; tackling family dysfunction, unhealthy relationships, drug abuse, etc. I love Pink.

    • Lk says:

      Hear! Hear!

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

      Yeah, credit where it’s due.

Pop isn’t a bad word and ‘Family Portrait’ and ‘My Vietnam’ were played so often by me as a young girl her CD started to skip and scratch. She has written some amazing deep soulful songs.

Someone wrote about how MTV might have given Miley the platform to bury her, now I don’t really believe that…but I do believe they gave her a lot of surprising leeway for such little reward other than to really turn most little fans she had off. It was a mess.

    • Nicolette says:

“Family Portrait” is one such song. It’s about the painful time her parents split up. Love her and her comment was right on point. Miley only wishes she had Pink’s talent.

      • Fran says:

…and the song with Linda Perry – “Lonely Girl”! That really was one I couldn’t stop crying to!

    • janel says:

      I LOVE Pink!

    • serena says:

I’m pretty sure Miley ‘wrote’ the lyrics for her latest -free- album as well (even my cat would have done better, but you get the point).

    • Alex says:

I was coming to say the same thing. Pink never said she wasn’t a pop singer…the comment this entire article is about straight up says she’s an aging pop singer. Not only that but she has plenty of deep songs…Family Portrait is something I listened to every time my family was going through a rough patch. She also is branching away from pop. But yea lets not forget Pink’s career is full of catchy pop and deep lyrics that reflect her own troubled life

    • ninal says:

Yeah she is a solid song writer and has always been able to straddle the seemingly oxymoronic phrase “feminist pop singer.”

    • FLORC says:

Yes to this all! Her lyrics are better than most and inspiring. Miley is just shock value.

    • Zigggy says:

Agreed! I don’t know a lot of Pink songs but “F*cking Perfect” has been known to bring a tear to my eye, as well as “Sober” and “Who Knew.”

      • justagirl says:

@Zigggy Exactly. I defy anyone who’s been through an impossible time to listen to “Sober” and not get teary at “I’ve heard myself cry never again, broken down in agony just trying to find a friend” ….it applies to way more than addiction.

“Who knew” is about a friend who overdosed, and again applies to many situations. “F*cking Perfect” is heart-breaking. “Long Way to Happy” is intense, it’s about sexual assault. “Crystal Ball” is acceptance & uplifting.

“Dear Mr President”, “Stupid Girls” and “U + Ur Hand” are excellent call-outs & commentaries. And many of her songs are about figuring out the pieces, picking up the pieces, surviving.

@Bedhead Pink’s pop songs can be deceiving, they can have depth when you look past the fluff. I found her music after 35 and was surprised at how much it resonated with me, how thoughtful it was.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I agree. Just because something is “pop” doesn’t mean it doesn’t have value or merit or involve some kind of talent or skill. Beatles and The Beach Boys were “pop”, but their music has forever changed the landscape of music and how its recorded.

    • K says:

Exactly! Even if the beat is upbeat and fun the songs always have more depth behind them. She also has never claimed to be anything other then a pop star she owns her sh*t.

    • Wren says:

Me too. I’ve always loved her. She writes her own stuff and it’s not dumb. It’s pop, but it’s not full of throwaway sentiments and mindless repeats.

    • MamaSez says:

Ditto! I’ve always loved Pink. She’s honest in her lyrics and how she lives her life. Glad to see her speak up.

    • justagirl says:

Agreed, her songs are a source of inspiration, and power, and the sense that she has captured what you’re going thru in lyrics.

When did it become ok for gossip sites to literally put words in someone’s mouth??
I see criticism of the music industry, and of peers for having no soul/emotion & going for only sex & shock. And while that includes Miley, it’s clear from her words that she is sad & let down by actual Industry, not Miley.

It’s the industry that gives performers the extra platform, it’s MTV that is responsible for the show, etc. It’s the industry that’s responsible for the iTunes world we live in, where people say “I have a few songs” & don’t know deeper profound songs, because they don’t have the album. On anyone’s album, the absolute gems of inspiration are not always singles/music for the masses.

I had thought of her as just angry young pop star and then discovered the depth of emotion in her songs, lyrics and delivery. I don’t see “antics” in her “Slut Like You” song…it’s flipping the slut-shaming of why is it ok for a guy to ‘get some’ but not a gal, and addresses other stereotypes in the lyrics. It’s not a “F you, look I’m a rebel” song.

    • I Choose Me says:

True. Even the above reference song Slut Like U. If you check out the lyrics, they are pretty deep. She’s challenging the notion that women/girls can’t just like sex for sex sake. She’s basically saying to the guy that if I’m a slut because of that then so are you.

      • MB says:

I came here to say exactly this.
I really just feel this article should be titled “Pink had something pretty reasonable to say, but I don’t like her so ‘F’ Pink!”

  4. Belle Epoch says:

I agree with her. Plus Pink has matured. She’s a good entertainer and certainly does not need to bow down to Mikey in a private message. I liked what she said about music changing lives. At a certain point, lyrics to songs can mean everything to you because you feel like the artist “gets it.”

I do not “get” Dead Petz that died because you neglected them. Or being unable to function without drugs. Or doing pr0n. Go away, mindless little girl. She has nothing to say – unless she grows up, which doesn’t look likely.

    • FrenchGirlChi says:

I agree Pink has matured. Miley is still young too. so let’s see if matures as with time comes.
When I look at the Big names in the industry.
Rihanna – was also doing outrageous things when she was young but she is maturing into a woman now. It didn’t happen overnight
Brittany Spears- Was out of control and look at her now.. She has matured
Pink – Was a rebel. Antics and all she has matured…

I am not a fan but I just don’t get it with the Miley hate. The girl is young, I could understand if she was in her 30’s or up but she isn’t …

I am going to wait to see if this passes as she gets older…

      • Ennie says:

All you mentioned (besides Miley Cyrus), have had a certain level of , I don’t know, coolness or respect. Miley was Hanna Mintana first, and when she broke free, maybe her music was good, but her antics are a joke, sorry.
Her music is Ok, I flatly refused (I still won’t) to see her sledgehammer -wreck ball video, because it was directed by creepy uncle Terry, and when I finally heard it on the radio, I thought it was not a bad song, but her image is not appealing.
Pink is pure soul, she gives herself in her songs, I used to like her from the lines, justa few of her songs, but I started listening, not only hearing them and I like her A LOT.
Madonna also craved attention, and was crass, but she was not only talented (voice ok-ish), but an extremely hard worker and good dancer, capable of creating excellent shows, an amazing performer. Dancing with a fake butt on is not on Madonna’s level.
She might get better, but I think she lacks the ambition, the real hunger for success. Like someone said yesterday , she’s rich and bored and trying to stay in the headlines, that’s it. Her music is not the main thing she is promoting, her image is.

  5. Jaded says:

Team Pink. She has talent, Miley no.

Quite frankly I always feel like I need an antibiotic and a hot shower after I read about or see photos of Miley and her f*cking tongue. Sure I’m old and trying to make sense of what’s happened in the music industry, especially for young women. But it’s become nothing more than a parade of naked flesh and mindless shock value hiding under the veneer of faux feminism and it revolts me. It’s a shame that so many genuinely talented young singers and performers get sidelined in favour of nothing more than peep shows and vulgarity.

    • Nicolette says:

This! X1,000. Had the misfortune to see part of her video where it’s nothing but a close up of her with sparkly goo running down her face and into her mouth. Then for good measure she’s spitting it out. That’s what passes for talent and artistry now?

    • Kitten says:

Yeah those pics of her from a couple days ago were really disturbing and gross.

      • mari says:

Jaded said exactly what I was thinking. “Antibiotic and a hot shower…” LOL

      • Wren says:

It was like we weren’t supposed to see that, but not in a titillating “secret photos from the shower room” way. More of a “I can’t believe you shit the bed and then hung the sheets out on the front lawn” kind of way.

    • BarkingMad says:

EVERYTHING you said, Jaded. #TeamPink. As for Miley… That tongue… How and why did it become her thing? She’s been doing it forever and it never looks remotely fun or attractive. It makes me want to gag. She needs to stop it – it brings nothing to her “act”, because her act is so gross, but I’m betting she can, and probably will, get even worse as “interest” in her wanes. She needs to lock herself away (in rehab, preferably), clean herself and her house up, learn to look after animals or give them to people who will love and care for them properly, lay low, struggle a bit with life, get some experiences and deal with them without all the drugs, write or collaborate to bring new material… and come back when she’s ready to give the punters a half-decent 90 minutes of entertainment, without the tongue, without the boobs and crotch, without all the drug talk (not moralising – it’s just old and boring), without all the lame and ridiculous shock tactics etc., or just stay gone. There are plenty of more talented and more deserving f male singers. Contrary to what she thinks, she is replaceable. Sorry about the rant.

      • Vampi says:

        ^This is spot on.

      • Ennie says:

        THIS.

      • Jaded says:

It’s a great rant! No need to apologize – *CLAPS*

      • jwoolman says:

I was watching a dog food commercial yesterday, with a lot of dogs. They all had their tongues hanging out, more or less. Miley does like her dogs…. It occurred to me that the dogs might unconsciously be her model for the tongue thing. Maybe she needs to hang out with cats more. They have long tongues but only bring them out when needed for personal hygiene.

    • sills says:

+10000000000 You said it and said it perfectly

  6. lem says:

she definitely has fun pop meaningless songs BUT she also wrote songs like family portrait that do have a much deeper meaning. in fact i think she goes into great detail in her “behind the music” episode (showing my age here) about how she had very deep music and she also had meaningless music b/c the deep stuff can be very difficult emotionally. The Truth About Love and Funhouse are definitely more meaningful given how much her marriage/separation influenced those lyrics.

  7. Jayna says:

The VMAs were not about music, just about feuds and soundbites to get ratings.

I love Pink and have enjoyed so much of her music.

  8. icy says:

She backtracked already! Why say anything then apologize. NEXT

    • lurker says:

ha. Maybe her label made her apologize. It’s impossible that she didn’t end up dissing someone signed with the same label as her right? I don’t know.

    • meme says:

I knew she would. She’s lame as is every other famous person who backtracks on what their real opinion is because OFFENDEDNESS.

    • Tiffany :) says:

      She DID NOT backtrack.

“. “Please look for a feud elsewhere. I have no issue with Demi Lovato or anyone else. I actually forgot she performed. I have opinions. Many,” she wrote. “I stand by what I said. However, I didn’t intend for the angry people of the world to latch on and make it into something it isn’t. Peace.””

” “You know, this is part of why I’m sad about the VMas and the world in general. Everyone is so nasty and waiting for a fight. I never said Anything about Demi Lovato or called out anyone.”

I was talking to a friend in response to his disappointment about the show. I agree w him. You can make this into whatever you like, cause that’s who we are now, I guess. I’m out,” she continued. “In other news, it’s gonna be a beautiful day, I hope you look up from your keyboards and enjoy it.”

    • Katie says:

Because in the age of the insanely easily offended and the rule of mob mentality, someone high up in her camp probably told her she had to

  9. Mia4S says:

Trash, gross, and embarrassing? Yes, yes, and yes.

Pink is a superior performer in every way. Her music is mostly pop but I cannot imagine many of these female pop stars of the moment including a duet with their Vietnam vet father on their album. A song he wrote while deployed and dedicated to vets. She’s a cut above.

  10. Crumpet says:

The way Miley is posing in the third pic down: Clearly she and Noah learned their moves from the same place (thinking of Noah’s little ‘smack that’ video).

  11. Naddie says:

Pink is the living proof that pop songs don’t need to be shitty. I might disagree on one or two things about her, but she’s easily the best of the 90s pop bunch (Britney, Christina, Mandy, Jessica). I just think that sometimes she sounded a bit jealous of the pretty ones, but that’s fine.

  12. chrissy says:

I think she means the image Miley is putting out there. Like so much marijuana talk and just gross tit exposure. I am not a prude but I never ever want to see Miley Cyrus ‘ s boobs ever again. It really is a bad example for underage kids. Also Nicky Minaj is gorgeous but singing about Anacondas is not.

    • chrissy says:

But I am as old as Pink so I guess that might be the problem lol

    • lurker says:

I think her racism is the bad example, not her tits.

      • chrissy says:

Yeah, her racism is a really bad example, I totally AGREE. I think I am just of the opinion that underage kids don’t need to see Miley Cyrus’s breasts at t the VMAs. Once again I am old.

      • Tiffany :) says:

I think boobs are fine, but there HAS to be more than just boobs. As Miley has been playing this same shtick for 2 or 3 years now, it doesn’t seem like she has a lot to offer so she falls back on boobs.

  13. ThatMitsyGirl says:

I’m waiting for someone to let Miley in on the secret that nothing she’s doing is original. Do what you do, Miley but you’re not inventing this shit.

    It’s all….a lot. Too much.

    • OrigialTessa says:

She has stolen something from Pink as well; her hair. She straight up stole Pink’s signature hairstyle that she’s had for the better part of two decades and passed it off as her own. Miley is a complete fabrication of other better women that came before her.

      • FingerBinger says:

Miley has stolen from Pink ,Madonna ,Snoop Dogg ,Cyndi Lauper ,Grace Jones. There’s nothing about her that is original.

    • emma says:

I don’t feel like she does feel like she invented it. I mean, Wayne from the Flaming Lips has inspired so much of her freakin look. I think she just thinks it’s not “main-stream”. And she’s just partying.

  14. Nancy says:

Don’t feel one way or the other about Pink, but I do like most of her music. But….I think she should have kept her thoughts to herself. By posting what she did, she gave Cyrus more of a platform and did, in fact, sound like the grumpy old neighbor yelling at the kids across the fence. But So What, she’s a rock star……we’re going to start a fight, love that song.

    • Bridget says:

That was from Pink’s private page – so it was only intended for people that she knows. It would be like you going onto Instagram or Facebook and posting your opinion and then having a friend screenshot it and post it.

  15. paola says:

Pink is indeed the voice of a generation

  16. The Original Mia says:

Shame on whoever took her private thoughts and screencapped them. She didn’t call out Miley in public. She was talking to her “friends”, who should have kept her views private. As she wanted them. She’s entitled to say anything she wants to say about Miley. The VMAs were a mess and that’s what MTV wanted.

  17. Skins says:

Trash, gross and embarrassing is what Miley has to do to remain relevant. Really kind of sad to watch. She has just morphed into this lowlife chick who will do anything to stay in the spotlight

  18. Nancy says:

But you’re not one generation from poor white trash, are you? Sorry that quote was for Agent Starling….make better choices Smiley.

  19. serena says:

Well, she is right. Preach Pink!!! She must be just a pop star herself but she wrote some good-deep songs. Now, I don’t know if Miley did write something more deep than ‘I smoke weed’ in the past but that’s not the point … Miley actually has a nice voice, but she’s throwing all away to ‘shock’, because she’s probably that unispired by music itself. It’s not because she’s always stark naked or with porn-star outfits, not everyone is a prude, but because it’s tiring, stupid and yes, even kind of obscene. Mostly tiring, I don’t get the fun or appeal in seeing somebody screaming about their vadge, penis or how they love weed.. I mean, good for you, why should I care? That’s not freedom, it’s just you being an idiot for the world to see.
And after you say that for a billion times, what is left for you to say?
She has a voice, and sometimes can actually say smart things or help a cause but that’s all meaningless when she acts like that.
See? That’s sad, as Pink said.

  20. meme says:

I agree with Pink but in this PC everyone is so offended world, I await an apology, an explanation, a clarification because she’s going to get backlash and no one lately seems to be able to weather any backlash.

  21. perplexed says:

She didn’t seem to name Miley specifically. Maybe the whole show was gross and embarrassing to her.

What I did notice is that she didn’t praise Taylor for her performance (no, I don’t think she has anything against Taylor. Just thought it was funny that the Biebs got a compliment).

  22. Kiki says:

I love Pink. And what she is saying, is right to the nail of the heat. I am a big fan of music ever since I was a little girl, and music did change my life completely. When Katy Perry said Alanis Morrisettet album change her life, my life changing album is “the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” by Lauryn Hill and that album was off the hook. Pimk also change my life as well, with raise your glass and f* ucking perfect. So I truly under stand what she is saying and I am completely sad with Pink as well. We live in a music world wher sex, alcohol, drugs are the hindsight to everyone’s life and also, petty girl bashing and mean girl ing antics are just immature. That’s right Taylor Swift and Katy Perry, I am talking to both of you. And Miiley Cyrus is just a sex puppet not an Artist. Have your words to say .

  23. jenn12 says:

Pink is intelligent and thoughtful, and she’s grown up. I thought she tried to be kind, actually, calling herself an aging singer. Miley may go on about being a “liberal ass freak”, but she’s not doing anything to help anyone, and her passive racism is obnoxious. I don’t recall Pink ever coming off as racist. That’s part of the bigger picture: Miley’s moronic antics are not harmless. Wearing a giant brown rear end to sing? Using humans as props? Slanting her eyes for a photo? Telling an African-American to be nice and quiet when speaking about racism? And then they hire her for high profile hosting gigs.

    • emma says:

Yeah, I agree, Miley isn’t helping anyone, she’s just partying.

And her new album is Flaming-Lips-as-all-get-out

  24. AlmondJoy says:

    I have Miley exhaustion.

Everything Pink said is spot on.

  25. Vampi says:

After Dame Jolie, Pink is my other girl crush! She’s amazing! She owns who she is and it’s no front. Also her areobatics leave me jaw dropped. Miley is just a straight up exhibitionist. Too bad her voice is wasted because she COULD have a long career without the gross LOOKATME antics. Her masturbating photo shoot made me cringe, and I’m no sexual prude. Girl is heading for Brit/Amanda territory. Smh.

  26. Daria Morgendorffer says:

No complaints here. I feel like she said what the majority of the public was thinking/feeling/saying. Miley Cyrus IS a gross, depressing trainwreck and the VMA’s are the same.

  27. Hannah says:

I don’t agree with this article that pinks sing has no depth. She’s not the most profound ever, but has written some songs that resonated on a deeper level. Family portrait for instance.
I feel Like her generation which is what was around when I was little at least could write their own songs. They were a bit more independent. There are no pinks or Alicia keys around for 12 year old girls today. Today the songs of miley, Katy, riri etc are all written by the same people and it shows.

  28. jc126 says:

I love Pink, and her adorable family, and she’s right on here. I agree that it’s awful someone took a screenshot of her private words and shared them, too.

  29. mrspeveler2 says:

I have always been a fan of Pink as a person & an entertainer. She is not backtracking as someones has said, she said she stands by her opinion. I also love how she is refusing to go back and forth with Demi Lovato. For what? Pink for President! Lol

    http://www.gossipcop.com/pink-vmas-demi-lovato-feud-twitter-tweets/

  30. Dawn says:

I agree with her. But who really cares about that fake award show anymore? It was on like ten channels and still couldn’t find an audience.

  31. celtlady says:

Pink posted her private thoughts, so any blame here goes to the person that shared a screen shot. She is entitled to her opinions, just like we all are. She is right. Miley’s behavior was sad and embarrassing. Pink is a class act, and even back in the day when she was rough around the edges, she never resorted to the downright gross and disgusting behavior that Miley frequently displays.

Pink has really matured into someone I find interesting, but I remember how she was back in the day. I couldn’t stand her because she struck me as 100% insincere. She was just young and dumb (as we all are for a time), but she was on some Mtv spring break type show saying how when she was younger she was convinced she was adopted and that Madonna was her real mother. She said it as if that was plausible, citing her “outrageous” personality as evidence all while trying to act tough. It was such an obvious act that I felt embarrassed for her. It took me years to pay attention to her after that. She’s really grown up. I really can’t stand Miley’s incessant need for attention coupled with her own delusions about how groundbreaking she thinks she is. At the same time, if I had been filmed in my youth, oh man, I know I’d come off like a twit as well!

I mean, Miley’s antics are kind of silly, but who is to say it doesn’t inspire someone out there or “save their life” <— still so surprised so many people say this.

Like P!nk said, she's older, and there are different levels of inspiration for every new generation. Heck, this doesn't inspire me at 28, but maybe if I was 15, I would think this Miley is dope as hell and believe there is more to life than this small little conservative town, etc, etc.

Also: Miley is like the friend who discovers raves/molly/drinking/anything for the first time. Like, still fun, but EXHAUSTING to be around.

      Completely agree.
I would also like to add that, while lots of her “hits” (i.e. songs that were released as singles) may be seen as to poppy to be deep, lots and lots of her album tracks are extremely deep indeed.
Lets look at some examples from her most recent album:

Are We All We Are – About how crazy the world has become and how we all have a responsibility to fix it
Beam Me Up – A very beautiful and emotional song about dealing with the loss of a child
The Great Escape – A song about wanting to support someone through times when they might be considering suicide
Run – An ode to her daughter about how she will always be there for her when she needs her
Good Old Days – A reflection on the time that two people have spent together and how, despite a rocky history, their lives today represent the “good old days”.

She is an amazing song writer. Period.

Pink isn’t known for back tracking but she doesn’t like the drama that people do try to put her in… That’s a known fact for her…

    Ok, maybe I’m wrong about this. PLEASE tell me if I am! But to me, it has been PAINFULLY apparent for quite a while now that, while I’m sure there are multiple reasons for smiley Chris’s absurd antics, THIS is the absolute main reason; her music is totally, utterly mediocre. She is uninspired, unoriginal, bland pop music, even her BEST song is still just “okay.” Because Miley cannot stand on her music alone as legitimate reason to pay attention to her, the has a million oh-so-crazy stunts that will;
    1. Keep us paying attention to her.
    2. Distract from the fact that her music is ABSOLUTELY nothing special.
Now, I know that Miley is also an attention whore, also fancies herself some kind of groundbreaking feminist, but ultimately, her music sucks and she knows it so she needs another reason for us to look at her. I mean, for ALL the talking about her that we do on this site, how often is it actually about her music? For all the talking that ANYONE does about her, is it EVER about her music?? Nope, miley makes SURE that it’s not.

Maybe if the drugs don’t fry her brain cells too much in Lohan fashion, Miley will wake up some day, put some clothes on, stick her tongue back in her mouth, bring out her guitar and focus on music. She does have talent buried somewhere inside her, and it used to be important to her.

For now, she reminds me of a little kid who has learned some four-letter words and is racing around yelling them, trying to shock the adults in the room.

  38. Bridget says:

Pink is where she is because she has worked her butt off – voice lessons, kick@$! live shows, and well written music. She has had incredible longevity for a pop artist, and it is because she has worked so hard.

Pink wrote Stupid Girls. And for that, she has a free pass from me for eternity.

  43. Marianne says:

I liked Demi’s response. ““Cool For The Summer may not “save kid’s lives” or “inspire” but I’d say Skyscraper & Warrior have done a pretty good job of helping people cope with mental illness. VMA’s are sexy and fun. There’s a time and place for everything,”

I mean, not every song on the planet has to be deep or inspirational. And Im sure Pink probably has some stupid songs out there too.

Well she is right. I miss Pink. When will she release new music& She was so big during last album with Just Give Me A Reason. Hope she will come soon with new superhits.

  46. jwoolman says:

Considering that the comment was not a public posting but taken out of context as part of a larger private conversation among friends – it was amazingly restrained and thoughtful, nothing that couldn’t be said to someone’s face. And yes, a private conversation on a private page has the expectation of, you know, privacy.

This was not a public essay, and she had no need to tick off a laundry list to include everything or everyone. She also was quite right to refuse to engage with the Demi Defenders Brigade. Wish more people had the sense to just walk away. That wasn’t an apology, and she had nothing to apologize about. Demi needs to tell the Brigade to cool it, if she hasn’t already. Or did Demi herself give them their orders to go into battle? If so, she needs to learn that it’s not always about her.

I knew Pink was special when I heard her belt out the wonderful “Scurvy” on a semi-live action SpongeBob SquarePants show (she was a pirate captain with a small crew that did look rather scurvy). I listened to some of her other non-pirate-related songs on YouTube after that. She really has a great voice. If you can pull off a song about scurvy, you can do anything.

I hate when women have to justify there disdain for something by precluding it with ‘because I’m old.’ I’m 26 and I find Miley vulgar and trashy and I have felt similarly about many other artists since I was 15. You don’t have to be ‘old’ to find such artists and such antics vulgar, trashy, boring, anti-feminist or unnecessary – you just have to have a degree of taste, standards, values and morality. Miley IS trash and presents herself as so which is sad because it seems that this all comes from the drugs she’s using. I think Miley is an intelligent, articulate and liberated young woman but she has gone a bit nuts since she got on the drug scene and one day I think she will look back on all this and admit that she was an addict.

“You don’t have to be ‘old’ to find such artists and such antics vulgar, trashy, boring, anti-feminist or unnecessary – you just have to have a degree of taste, standards, values and morality.”

You’re free to like or dislike whatever you please, it doesn’t make you old. There are people as young as 11 who can embrace, preach, and champion a moral code presented to them, and learn to judge others as inferior or superior based on that code presented to them. But the weakness comes in when a person assumes that their not liking something gives them the moral high ground and that anyone else lacks values, when really it’s that their values are different from yours. Some people see traditional values like chastity and female modesty as moral/value obligations while others see it as a matter of personal choice and have values that center around empathy, equality, honesty, tolerance, and fidelity instead.

I don’t think any of that is what Pink is getting at though. She’s always been for people’s right to reject the ‘Traditional Values’ way of doing things.

  49. Otaku Fairy says:

I don’t see Pink’s comment as a jab at Miley for not covering up (which would be contradictory to what Pink has done and stood for) or as a jab at Demi (even though I agree with Demi’s opinion that the vmas aren’t supposed to be serious and that not all music needs to be some symbol of depth and activism. Some of it should be just fun, catchy, dance-y shit). I think it was a comment on an overall lack of talent, art, and depth shown at the VMAs (and sometimes in the music industry).

Both Miley and Pink have made sexuality, nudity, shock, edginess, and rebellion as part of their images at different times (and to me that’s almost always a neutral or positive thing) but Pink is a better singer, has better music, and is more successful.

And she’s not entirely wrong- I watch the VMAs mostly for the fashion and the controversial moments, knowing that I’m not going to see a lot of talent in the performances most years. I like Tori Kelly though.

  50. LA Juice says:

Miley strikes me as a girl who will spend her life missing the point. When Madonna set the original standard for shocking and awing us, it was almost always with purpose. And it felt like someone with power helping young girls know it is ok to dress the way we wanted, and to be sexual if we wanted.

Miley wants to shock, but she doesn’t stand for anything by high times and cultural misappropriation. neither of these things need the pop star boost.
