Alicia Vikander in Louis Vuitton at the Venice Film Festival: pretty or costume-y?

wenn22836773

The Danish Girl premiered at the Venice Film Festival over the weekend. I’m just covering Alicia Vikander and Eddie Redmayne from the photocall and premiere – Bedhead will do Amber Heard and Johnny Depp. Heard and Depp were pulling back-to-back promotional duties in Venice, and Depp surprised me a little by coming out for Amber’s big premiere. Of course, that meant that Amber and Johnny sort of overshadowed Alicia and Eddie, the real stars of The Danish Girl. You can see that fact – the fact of being overshadowed on the red carpet – all over Alicia’s face is many of the premiere pics too.

Alicia wore back-to-back Louis Vuitton looks at the photocall and premiere. I used to really enjoy LV’s cotoure, but these looks really don’t even feel like part of Louis Vuitton brand. The little print dress at the photocall just looks so basic on Alicia. Plus, she looks exhausted and sad. Perhaps because she and Michael Fassbender are done? Seriously, he never comes out to support her stuff. As for the premiere look… it looks like a costume, right? The shoulder and sleeve ruffles were too much – if it had been edited a little bit more, this would have been a lovely boho gown.

The Danish Girl is already getting rave reviews (Venice was the first opportunity many critics had to see the film), for Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander in particular. I’ve already seen some trade papers openly wondering if Redmayne is going to be that once-in-a-generation actor to get back-to-back Best Actor Oscars. As for Alicia, her performance is being praised. Variety even says that Alicia might be the sleeper star of the film, that it’s just as much about her performance as Eddie’s. What if Alicia gets nominated this year? Hm.

As for Eddie and his wife Hannah Bagshawe… they looked lovely, and by now, I’m sort of used to the fact that Hannah always looks sort of “undone.” Like, she’s not a movie star and I would imagine she doesn’t want to go Hollywood and bring a styling team with her for big events, so maybe she’s doing her own hair and makeup for some of these events. Her dress is Alexander McQueen – it’s pretty and it suits her. Eddie looks lovely as always, but his haircut makes him look like an awkward teenager.

It’s very pretty and I like it on her. That said, my first thought was that it was a little early for Oktoberfest. And now I want beer.

  2. Lea says:

Sad Alicia on the red carpet ?The people were there to Johnny and Eddie she is not famous in italy.

  3. Jegede says:

I’ve been reading mixed reviews not raves.

But Vikander is apparently the stand out in this paint by numbers film.

  4. Chaiselongue says:

Fassbender is filming Assasins creed and can’t just leave for an evening out on a red carpet in another country.
He does support her events, just discreetly which puts paid to the nonsense about a ‘pr relationship.

She has said the evening was very emotional for her due to the response to the film which might explain her facial expressions.

    Simple explanations all round.

The dress is ok. Probably better close up, not striking enough for a red carpet.

Redmayne isn’t winning back to back oscars. His reviews are very good not great. Fassbender’s are great. But there are others to come yet.

  5. jbap says:

Danish Girl has actually got some very mixed reviews – but Redmayne and Vikander have attracted praise.

  6. Emma says:

Vikander role is a co-lead and she barely got noticed for her performance. That Variety piece is PR because in their review they barely mentioned her. This movie has mediocre reviews

  7. GlimmerBunny says:

She looks really pretty IMO, and I hope she does get nominated. I would enjoy seeing her haters grit their teeth and begrudginly agree she’s talented after that. Eddie and Hannah make an adorable couple!

    • Bethie says:

Me too! I’m kind of shocked by the hate…she was so amazing in Ex Machina that I thought she’d have lots of fans! Did she do something stupid I didn’t hear about?

      • Jegede says:

        @GlimmerBunny

I don’t know much about Vikander or her career.
But I used to like Hooper’s work. He’s too obvious now.

Yep she’s getting praise, and I’m really hoping she does well.

      • Mia4S says:

@Bethie there is a super-bizarre bunch of Fassbender fans who for reasons that would take too long to get into feel that she is not a suitable girlfriend for him. Really this girl is so inoffensive their overreaction is hilarious. I have no great interest in her but after the weirdness I’ve seen on this site and others I honestly hope she gets nominated and marries Fassy. The reaction of the crazies would be soooo entertaining. 😉

      • Bae says:

I haven’t seen her in anything other than Seventh Son, and I don’t fancy Fassy at all, but she comes across as very unlikable in interviews. It’s nice to see an actress being confident, but she comes across as arrogant.

    • stellalovejoydiver says:

I think she looks great as well and not at all sad and exhausted, that’s just pure fan fiction since they are hoping her and Fassbender are over.
She seems to focus on her career and I like how ambitious she is. IMO she is a talented actress and really beautiful, I don’t get the hate

    • antipodean says:

She does look quite pretty, but all I can think is, “so that’s where Granny’s dust ruffles got to”! That, and “where are those Steins I ordered”?

    • korra says:

The hate for her is outstanding. And the people that consider her arrogant…are basing it off one interview. Lmao. If people criticized her acting that’d be totally fine. But good lord people go hard on their hate for her for one interview she made.

  8. Karl says:

“The Danish Girl is already getting rave reviews (Venice was the first opportunity many critics had to see the film), for Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander in particular. ”
LMAO This movie has mediocre reviews and Vikander isn’t mentioned in most of them. She hasn’t raves but only good notice

  9. Sixer says:

She looks like an escapee from that TV series about fairy tales with Robbie Carlyle in it. I don’t like that show.

On a Danish Girl note, trans actress Rebecca Root is in it. She’s currently starring (as a trans woman beginning a new relationship) in a BBC sitcom, Boy Meets Girl. I watched the first episode and it has a few teething problems in terms of timing etc, but it struck a funny AND sweet AND lovely note and I think it will bed in and improve as the series goes on. All British celebitches should watch it and support it!

  10. Nude says:

This is supposedly a Tudor-style gown. I think she looks lovely. I didn’t realise Eddie was so tall. Hannah looks incredibly tall anyway. The “undone” observation may be right: the Brits don’t like to look like they’re trying too hard, right?

    • Pondering thoughts says:

Brits like to pretend they were upper class. The upper class needn’t try too hard / needn’t make a real effort because their social status is so up and so fixed they are allowed to break rules and it won’t affect their social status negatively. So Brits being undone is a statement of eternally fixed upper class consciousness. In short: they are arrogant … .

  11. Ginger says:

Vikander’s dress is one of the worst that I have seen. Awful.

    • Renee says:

Agree, I think she is unhappy bc she had to wear that dress.

    • Pondering thoughts says:

It is okay for a summer evening dress for a low-key afternoon party or such. It looks like a mixture of european medieval folk dance costumes and 1700ies french court dresses. Especially the sleeve cuffs or what is that end of her sleeves called?

    • Totally agree. It’s the national costume from the Miss Universe Pageant.

  12. Augustus says:

That Variety piece is PR. LOL in their review they didn’t mentioned her! She has only good notices not raves. And the movie has really mixed reviews

    • Hannah says:

      The telegraph raves about her.

      • Augustus says:

LOL No. Go to see The Guardian, Evening Standard, Time Out London (plus all the American reviews). She hasn’t raves and only good notices if she is mentioned. The Guardian criticized how she was acting.
Did you change your post now? You said all British reviews and now you wrote only The Telegraph LOL

    • Tia says:

      What’s with all the LOL’s?

    • Matador says:

“But I’m not the only one wondering if Vikander (the Swedish girl, if you will) might emerge as the film’s feistiest candidate for gold — the benefactor, as is so often the case in this game, of less advance scrutiny.”

While Guy Lodge (Variety’s reviewer) may not be raving about her individually, he does recognize she might be the strongest Oscar candidate to come out of the film. For better or worse, yes, she is getting Academy Award talk.

  13. Abigail says:

Fassbender’s Steve Jobs premiered in Telluride on the following day. He wasn’t there either, but in Malta for Assassin’s Creed.
In the trailer, Alicia looks more impressive than Eddie, and definitely looks like a co-lead. The film seems to be a little too restrained and sugar-coated, according to the critics, but I look forward to it.

  14. DianaM. says:

    She looks like Nicole Richie.

  15. Armenthrowup says:

Alicia is gorgeous, man, those legs! Eddie Redmayne is just…I’m sorry, I find him really, really ugly. His wife is lovely. But him, no. Just no.

    • Franca says:

I find him really really attractive. His wife is also beautiful. Alicia is cute.

      • knower says:

Am I the only one that thinks Alicia’s face is rather basic?

      • korra says:

@knower No you’re not. It’s been said ad nauseaum that she’s really not that pretty by dang near everyone. Congrats.

I think she’s quite pretty and if her beauty is basic….well good. It’ll help her in being able to transform for a character no?

      • Armenthrowup says:

Fair enough! Each to their own 😀 xx

  16. Mia4S says:

Eddie’s wife needs a profession make up artist. She’s pretty and she looks OK but that make up is not photographing properly. It’s a shame.

Alicia’s dress works for me because it’s Venice. Not for an LA carpet but in Venice? Hell yeah.

  17. Hazel says:

I like Eddie so I really want this film to do well.

From what I read with the reviews, the movie itself is inoffensive and definitely made for your typical middle of the road Oscar voters.

I like Hannah’s undone look. It’s refreshing in this fame obsessed world that here is clearly someone who could benefit from her spouse’s fame but obviously not interested in it. I like to juxtapose that with Amber Heard for example.

  18. kri says:

She is very pretty, but that gown is so 1870’s IKEA, I just cannot. Makes me think of onion dip with all of those ruffles.

  19. NUTBALLS says:

The tudor gown isn’t attractive, but I love the shorter dress Alicia wore. It’s nice to see her with a smile on her face. I think she’s very pretty.

I’m looking forward to seeing her and Eddie in The Danish Girl, even if it’s getting mixed reviews. I enjoyed her performance in Ex Machina and Royal Affair.

    • Chinoiserie says:

It is not really tudor style but 18th century style and remains me of the films she had in her break up film A Royal Affair. I wonder if she did that on purpose. I liked some of the elements of the dress but it was consume-y as a whole.

  20. Bee says:

All you have to do is look at Metacritic to see this didn’t get rave reviews…

  21. Angie says:

Isn’t this year supposed to have been “the rise of Alicia Vikander”? If so, she’s doing an awful job at being noticed. The outfits aren’t noteworthy and her performances haven’t garnered her any worldwide recognition. I think she thought she was going to be this year’s Lupita Nyongo.

    • Matador says:

The “rise” talk mostly has to do with the number of films she appears in; David Oyelowo talked about this with the Hollywood Reporter. Once he was cast in “Selma” – even thought it took several years to make the film – so many other doors opened for him in the interim. I’m not a Vikander fan but I suspect the same thing happened here, a domino effect.

  22. Andrea says:

The dress IS costumey. I wish she would be more humble like her boyfriend.

  23. Saks says:

Eddie’s wife face is like she is thinking “oh dear God, not another 6 months of this”

  24. perplexed says:

Do you have to pay for your own make-up team if you’re not a celebrity? If so, I can see why Eddie Redmayne’s wife chooses to do her own make-up.

  25. Sherry says:

Haters are gonna hate. But Alicia has a lot of natural talent and a beautiful speaking voice. Very husky and appealing, pleasing to the ear. And I’m a hetero woman! Lol. She will win an Academy Award one day.

  26. Daisy says:

Alicia Vikander has NO charisma: that’s her problem. I’ve seen Alicia Vikander in a few films now (Testament of Youth, A Royal Affair, Anna Karenina, The Fifth Estate). I think she’s a very good actress but she just doesn’t have that ineffable eye-catching thing that makes a star. Jennifer Lawrence lights up the screen and I will watch dull-as-dust award shows just for her; Emma Stone and Anna Kendrick are always gloriously watchable; even Kristen Stewart holds her own against Juliette Binoche. Alicia is boring and even pouty on red carpets. Disclaimer: I haven’t seen Ex Machina, so my view might change.

    • ds says:

The only thing that really got me through Ex Machina was the fact that it was the actors that carried it out. All three of them. Although, I really noticed Oscar Isaac in that film. I don’t mind Vikander’s thirst; if you’re proud of something and your job, you should claim it. So I say, you go girl, fight for credits. That said, I’m really sorry Adèle Exarchopoulos isn’t the “new” talented girl. I haven’t heard her speak English so I’m guessing that could be one factor, but she has the greatest energy I have ever seen on screen. She’d eat Lawrence for breakfast, and she kinda reminds me of Vikander…something in the face.

  27. Jenny says:

Yes that dress is def too costumey. Also, I don’t like the other short dress at all, it looks really boring and like something you’d see on the subway here in Stockholm during the summer, on every other girl. As a Swedish woman I can say this: Swedish women rarely know how to dress well. It’s very sad. Alicia could be a case in point, although I’m guessing she has a stylist now that she’s gone Hollywood so it’s probably the stylist fault this time.

I don’t think I’ve seen Alicia in anything other than A royal affair and I never finished it because it bored me. Alicia is beautiful to be sure but I do agree with Daisy – she really lacks in charisma. Her screen presence comes across more empty model than gifted actress to me. Still, as a patriot I wish her well in Hollywood. 😉

  28. Moon says:

The variety review (not the one about her) seems to throw some subtle shade – barely mentions her, mentions she has a substantive role as a resident Swedish girl – did her PR people piss someone off? Cause the non pr articles I’ve read about her seem to be taking some subtle hits at her.

    • lurker says:

I think when you’re arrogant enough to predict, before your movies are even released, that you’re going to be headed to the Oscars, it’s only natural that people would be reluctant, upon viewing one such movie, to then proclaim how wonderful you are and how right you were about how wonderful you are.

People don’t want to see arrogance affirmed by success — especially when it’s the arrogance of a woman.

  29. alex says:

Shooting AC or not… there is no point in going to venice to support her. Depp was going to be there, they knew that. That’s way some pics of the “it couple” was released some days before the festival…

  30. Kiki says:

I would like to say, Alicia Vikander. Please for the love of God, break contract with Louie Vitton. This dress is so ugly, that the people of the Royal Affair wants it back, and also the Tudor might probably tarnished, and deep fried the dress. As for the Danish Girl movie, I have read the reviews and they are not good and for that I am so sorry. Also, you amy hate me for this, but this relationship with Fassy was doomed from the start. Even of they got married it was doomed from the start. People like Fassy because he is humble, people don’t lick Alicia because she has very bad PR and she is arrogant. And since she is ver icy in interviews, she needs to lightened up and relax. This I will be more famous shick is wearing it’s pretty head.

  31. Naddie says:

Not trying to be anyone’s apologist, but I still don’t see this overwhelming Alicia’s arrogance that everyone is talking about. But I gotta say that she looks perfect in the shorter dress, hope she keeps many like that in her wardrobe, cause it fits her beautifully. Also, I kinda disliked her just by pictures, then I watched her on Jimmy Fallon and she seemed pretty likeable, she even did the frog dance.

  32. Elisha says:

I love that dress, very 70s boho/Gunne Sax.
