Dakota Johnson in McQueen at TIFF ‘Black Mass’ premiere: lovely or budget?

Like Johnny Depp, Dakota Johnson has been front and center during the film festival circle for Black Mass. I’m actually curious to see if she holds her own with Depp in their scenes together. Considering Sienna Miller was edited out of the film, Dakota is the only major actress holding down the fort in what seems like a massively male-dominated film.

These photos are from the TIFF photocall and premiere for Black Mass. I don’t have the ID on Dakota’s photocall long-sleeved wrap dress (below), but it’s bad. It looks dated and her hair is simply awful in those photos. Thankfully, Dakota did bring some glamour for the premiere. Her light, floral look is Alexander McQueen Resort 2016. The floral is actually beautiful, and I love the idea of putting Dakota in a light, summery, full-skirted gown like this. My problem is the midriff cutout. I’m sorry, but the bodice of the dress should not have a cutout. What could have been one of the best looks at TIFF is now relegated to being “a pretty beach dress.”

Also – Lainey said something about Dakota hanging out with Jake Gyllenhaal in a larger group at TIFF. Jake and Dakota dated a while back and there were some rumors a few months ago that they could be trying something again. I’m not into it – Dakota could do better.

I agree; too bad about the cutout because it’s a beautiful dress. That striped mess is awful.

  2. Esteph says:

I don’t particularly hate her dress, it’s pretty but yes the cutouts could have been avoided.
Side note, I don’t think she’s a very good actress, anyone else agree?

  3. GreenieWeenie says:

God, I find her so beige.

  4. Skyblue says:

I secretly love that her hair is always kind of wonky but only because I suffer from the same issues. Mine never looks right!

Sames. And also her makeup, because my makeup usually melts off my face within an hour.

I hate that she plays Johnny Depp’s wife in this movie because he looks so old and she’s in her 20’s. So ridiculous.

the hair is just..So Damned Matronly, which with the bags under her eyes is just not helping anything…. Why are we also here trying to make her as a “Fashion girl” happen??

    • Erinn says:

I’m really not sure. She’s cute and all… but her style isn’t great. I like her hair pulled back much more than down, though her haircut in general isn’t the most flattering. I have a very simillar coloring to her (nearly the same hair color, skin tone though my eyes are a bit lighter) – I think her makeup choices are good, but she needs something to help the eyes. I do get like that when my allergies are bad, or if it’s really humid and I’m over heated though, so I get it.

That flowy dress could have been so pretty. Shame that the cutouts make it look so awkward. It’d have been relatively boring without, but at least more put together.

      • Holmes says:

Some people just have bags under their eyes that don’t respond to treatment. I’ve had similar evey since I can remember. I admire her more for not getting corrective plastic surgery on them.

I actually like Dakota and her tired housewife eyes. She is not the fashion, though. I think they are trying to make her happen and remain happening so they can score big again at the next FSOG.

(Obviously no offense to housewives. Nevertheless, am gonna wait over here in my corner to be yelled at by the housewives.)

If you ignore the bangs, her and Amber heard could be sisters

  7. Kate says:

Ugh, it’s a pretty enough dress, but it’s depressing that this is what the McQueen label churns out now.

  8. katai says:

cutout awful…dress is bland and kinda bad 1980’s Laura Ashley

  9. AlmondJoy says:

Dakota is pretty but she always looks bored. She would look much better if she gave off a happy vibe.

  10. kibbles says:

I really like the dress and this is one of the few times that I think Dakota looks very pretty and almost like an ethereal beauty. The dress is beautiful even with the cutout but it would have looked better without it.

  11. Careygloss says:

I don’t know why, but I just can’t like her. Not sure what it is. She drives me nuts.

  12. Lucy says:

This girl has the charisma of a plain baked potato. That’s all I really got.

  13. Seszie says:

    I loooooovvvveee the long dress!!!!!

  14. Nibbi says:

i disagree with you guys about the cutout. imagining the dress with a solid bodice, in that ethereal floral floaty thing, seems either horrid laura ashley early 90s or little house on the prairie.

i think she’s quite beautiful really. she has a girl next door normal-kinda pretty chick thing going on that is approachable. nice skin and glowiness and stuff .

and what the hell bagging on her about her, um, eye-bags. a) i think those are referred to as sleepy aka “bedroom” eyes, and come on, she is Don Johnson’s daughter. Those are HIS eyes. little bags can be kinda sexy.

  15. Anare says:

Love both looks. The short dress is a little common but not horrible. I was just looking at pics of Kim Kardashian so I know horrible when I see it! TBH I think Dakota is really beautiful and I like her style. She doesn’t seem to take anything too seriously.

    I think she looks lovely!
