Why is doing interviews for a movie that I’ll be able to get at Redbox by November? Big bag of wind.

  2. meme says:

DeNiro’s an icon and in his prime, a brilliant actor. Reporter asked him stupid questions.

    • Kami says:

Yessss. The hate was real with her. Plus, if he asked her to turn the recorder off then doesnt that mean he was going off record? Why is she reporting his objections to her interview?Shame on his publicist for not being in the room, THIS is exactly why a good publicist doesnt leave their client in a junkette, especially not someone like DeNiro who isnt great at handling media.

    • Jib says:

I don’t agree. He has done some stupid roles, and seems to have dialed them in. He is not above being asked questions for the public when the public is going to shell out, what? $30 for two people to see this new film.

These people play make believe for a living, get millions of dollars for make believe and then get all high and mighty when they don’t like the questions. If he doesn’t have the fortitude and patience to field some stupid questions, then I think he needs to stop making movies.

      • Quincy7 says:

        AMEN.

      • meme says:

DeNiro has never done a lot of PR for any of his movies and he rarely gives interviews. He’s been a super private person since the beginning of his career. Press junkets are not for insulting questions.

      • MCraw says:

I wouldn’t want someone asking me questions about my work and imply that I’m a lazy worker.

People really think that because they have a press pass they can ask rude questions, as if it’s ballsy and cool? When someone replies rudely, don’t be surprised. She wasn’t being professional, we all know why she asked that question. And he didn’t like the shade.

Respecting my elders trumps all professional edginess I may seek. The golden rules like that would help more people keep respect.

  3. word says:

    Men get called “darling” too.

Hey Ariana, keep the curls ! By the way, did anyone watch Scream Queens last night?

    • Norman Bates' Mother says:

Grande’s hair look amazing in those pictures. It’s more pleasant to look at than those ridiculous extensions and with the side-part and the volume she could always cover the right side of her face, which is a win-win. She should definitely keep it.

    • Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

Yes but men are in power positions so calling them darling doesn’t oppress them like it oppresses women.

      • Kami says:

Nonsense. De niro was oppressing nobody. He was a 70 year old notoriously awkward and introverted actor standing up to a bully. I suppose had he called her kiddo some Taylor Swift Feminist would be all lathered up. The condescension was NOT gender based, it was age based, and frankly it was well earned.

She picked him as a target because he is famously awkward at these things, she WOULD NEVER hijack a junket with this gas lighting behaviour with an outspoken guy like Dustin Hoffman or Gene Hackman or Jimmy Caan because she knows “darling” would be the least of her worries.

  4. The Original G says:

Wow, was this supposed to be some hard hitting exposé of skilled people who have to go to work at jobs that aren’t always challenging or interesting but need to get done by someone who also needs a pay check?

I’m thinking that this spunky young woman/wise grandfather confection of a film isn’t Taxi Driver?

  5. EN says:

The older movie stars have hard time adjusting to the age of viciousness spawned by the social media.

    • Tiny Martian says:

You’re right, EN, and I don’t blame them one bit. There’s this thing called “respect for other human beings” that I really miss, and I’m tired of journalists and just regular people on the internet trying to push each others’ buttons all the time. Out and out rudeness has become the norm. I mean seriously, what’s the point?

  6. Guest1 says:

I didn’t perceive his comment as sexist. I say things tongue in cheek all the time but without the sexism connotations. I truly want to tell them to —- off but I’m an adult so naturally I act passive aggressive 😊
Besides, her questioning was boring and irrelevant.

  7. Penelope says:

Eh, he’s DeNiro, he’s older now, and he’s gonna say what he damn well pleases. It wasn’t all that shocking anyhow & she’ll get over it.

Coincidentally, I caught Taxi Driver for the first time in a while last night. Man, was RD fantastic in that. So young, so intense, so freaking good.

  8. Moi says:

That journalist/reporters question was rude and completely off base for a press junket. I don’t blame RD for leaving. The guy is a living legend.

    • laura says:

Robert De Niro is one of the most difficult actor, he is a well known diva.
He was talented in his youth but the last 15 years he keeps on playing the same act over and over. Mister De Niro was my cousin neighbor in new york, and he was the rudest person you can imagine. Never smile to the kids or say even say hello as neighbors…
On the opposite Al Pacino, Nicholson and Robert Duvall are so sweet and personable.

  9. Colleen says:

I wish I could see a video of this exchange.

The way the interview exchange was written totally confuses me. It looks as though Brocke was the one who called him Darling, but I gather that’s not what went down.

  10. Cinderella says:

The interviewer’s approach seemed snotty. She couldn’t show some respect for an iconic actor who’s contributed so much to the industry and given so much to moviegoers? How could she not know she was treading down a confrontational path by suggesting his acting is on “auto-pilot”. I would have walked out to, and she wouldn’t have gotten a “darling” out of me.

      • Prince Valiant says:

Thanks for the link, Don’tKillMeIAmFrench. This woman is downright insulting in that article. She mentioned Goodfellas as an unwatchable film. Goodfellas is a great film. Very violent but that’s its strength. Violence is shown for what it is: crazy, ugly, gratuitous, contrary to some films where violence is portrayed almost as appealing. I am surprised that nobody in the Comments section mentioned Casino. The heated verbal exchange between Pesci and De Niro in the middle of the desert in Casino is spell-binding. True, some of De Niro’s actual films are bad. But that proves that actors are only minimally responsible if a film is bad, if a titan like De Niro can’t do much to compensate with his acting ability for a lousy script. Really, to say that De Niro is overrated is demented.

      • Bridget says:

This might amaze you, but not everyone agrees that Goodfellas (or Casino) are masterpieces. Opinions are like @ssholes: everyone’s got one.

      • Kami says:

@Bridget True but thankfully those who don’t, happen to be part of a small sad faced minority. Both those movies feature in the top 100 of pretty much EVERY Best Movies Ever Made list, both among film critics and the general public.

    • Desi says:

Plus it was supposed to be a junket interview, light and focused on the film and she decided to try turn it into a Vanity Fair cover interview. She basically accused him of gentrifying Tribecca because he tried to revive the community he was raised in with his film festival. Even if the argument could be made, how is this a subject for movie junket. And where were his handlers through all of this?

    • lucy2 says:

The reporter seems like someone looking for attention by creating drama. I can’t stand that kind of attitude – just do your job.
I don’t blame him for leaving. At some point, you have to value your own time and not give it to those trying to pull crap like this.

  11. Frosty says:

The interviewer sounded like she already had her story in mind and it was going to a hatchet job. So good for him for cutting her off. Sure, DeNiro’s iconic years were from the mid-70s to around 82-ish, but IMO he managed a very successful transition to more mainstream fare–including Analyse This, Midnight Run, Heat, and yes The Fockers — which I have a feeling hleped underwrite Tribeca Films and probably Tribeca Film Festival. He’s got nothing to apologize for, and certainly not to that interviewer/twit.

    • doofus says:

Midnight Run is probably one of the best “buddy” films of all time. the chemistry between him and Grodin in that is belly-laugh inducing.

      “those were some good-lookin’ chickens…”

  12. lila fowler says:

The Intern is now at 48 on Metacritic. How low will it go?

  13. Josefa says:

The interviewer was being very rude and unprofessional but she was asking a perfectly legit question. He’s a legendary actor but most of his films for this decade and the past are well known trash. One starts wondering why such a gifted actor would waste his time doing something like Meet The Fockers.

  14. LA Juice says:

I bet Merle Streep would have kept her cool if asked about Momma Mia and that Rikki and the jetsons movie that she clearly took for the paycheck. Then again. Merle rarely goes into auto pilot, even in a crappy movie.

Sorry Bob- you have been taking crap roles for a while, no shame in it.

  15. Mispronounced Name Dropper says:

I can see where she was coming from. Bob used to be very discerning about the roles he took but at some point he crossed a line and started taking pedestrian roles for the money. On the other hand she must have known that he wasn’t going to do a diservice to the film he was promoting by admitting that he was on auto pilot when he played the character. So she really shouldn’t feign being taken aback by his response. That said, I won’t be seeing it.

  16. Aubrey says:

Of course Kourtney values her time alone; she slept alone and never considered marriage or even an engagement.

  17. Bella bella says:

DeNiro was great in Being Flynn. When he gets the good roles he still hits it. The interviewer was being rude but maybe rude is perceived as allowable these days. I think it’s totally acceptable that he ended the interview.

  18. Cam says:

When celebs do this, they give the journalist they’re walking out on more clicks and views.

  19. Scarlet Pimpernel says:

I was reading up on this journalist on Wikipedia – apparently she misrepresented Noam Chomsky in an article she did for the Guardian which they withdrew and for which they apologised. She seems to have garnered many an award but also to specialise in being “clever” and “hard-hitting” … I think she had every intention of beginning the De Niro interview with an insult.

    • Tiny Martian says:

Seriously? Okay, now I’m steaming mad. It’s bad enough that she was disrespectful to de Niro, but if she misrepresents my man Chomsky, I’m going after her……….just as soon as I finish my tea.

  20. Ewissa says:

I love De Niro.He is brilliant actor-how sexy he was (and I still find him and Pacino sexy even now when old ) Of course there is no actor that didnt make stupid movie – all of them did at least 1. I find that reporter very rude and whats obvious that she is some fame hungry idiot(if he askesd her to turn recorder off ) who tought selling it to tabloids will make her famous or give her more work…(hope not)As to De Niro calling her darling its not sexist at all seems more as patronising as he didnt want to be rude and call her names what I would porbably do in that situation.

  21. LaurieH says:

I’m going to be in the minority here, but I never thought Robert de Niro was all that great of an actor. I feel the same way about Jack Nicholson. In every movie, they seem to be playing themselves, playing a character, playing themselves. You are ALWAYS aware that you’re watching De Niro or Nicholson, because their personas are so unique and strong. And I thought he was a bit of a candy-ass for walking out on the interview. “Negative inferences”… is he really that delicate? He could have easily answered the questions…. “yes, it would be tempting to go on auto-pilot, but no, I’ve never considered it. I am a professional. If the role was such that I’d be tempted to go on auto-pilot, I wouldn’t accept the role to begin with.” See? Easy. As to so many banks moving into TriBeca – again, easy. “Do I like it? No. Does it have anything to do with what I am doing? No.”

    • siri says:

He’s not that smart. And I do share your opinion about his acting. It’s HIM, always. The only two films I truly liked him in were The Deer Hunter, and Falling in Love. In the latter one, he even managed to come over sympathetic;-)

  22. MildredFierce says:

These actors make a product for public consumption. Just as awards are given for a body of work Lifetime Achievement Awards. It is fair to ask them questions regarding their work – yes. Because these are the same actors who will gladly show up for their Cecile B. Award at the Golden Globes. They just want adulation. And we they don’t get it, they get upset. IF the interviewer was MAN – DeNiro – I would bet my house – would not used the word DARLING. That implies: dearest, beloved, lover, sweetheart. It was sexist power play. Reminding her your a woman and the weakest sex. So yeah, as a feminist, it was sexist. Calling her a34hole – would not be sexist. But he had to sharpen the bard by implying her gender.
