Rihanna wore a giant pink Dior poncho at Paris Fashion Week: funny or fierce?

Rihanna

When Rihanna was announced as the first woman of color to front a Dior campaign, I was pretty excited. Finally, the fashion house could be inspired by a genuine fashion muse! The only problem, of course, was that they immediately put her in one of Raf Simon’s cookie-cutter designs, and all hope was lost. Even Rihanna sort of gave up and opted to wear magnificent Guo Pei at the Met Gala, which could have been a prearranged agreement. Or maybe that was Rih’s way of telling Dior to step up their game.

Whatever the case, Rihanna showed up to Paris Fashion Week for a front-row seat. She wore a giant pink something to the show. Some outlets are calling it a cape, but I’m calling it a straight-up poncho. Now when I think of ponchos, childhood camping memories come to mind. But Dior went bigger with Rihanna, and I have to say — aside from the pink — this is a pretty fabulous poncho. If she was simply wearing stilettos, this look would have flopped, but the fierce black boots counteract the cutesy color. This is a win for both Dior and Rihanna. Do you agree?

Rihanna also wore another pink ensemble, which I’m including below. She frequently gets stuck with pink when she’s representing Dior, and she may dislike it, but she’s getting paid. Rihanna also wore a silver coat at a Paris nightclub to party with Travis Scott, so I guess the public makeout session may be an official relationship. She can do so much better than him, but maybe she’s simply having fun. I don’t see Rihanna ever settling down in a long-term relationship, and I feel the same way about her dalliance with Dior. She does wear the heck out of this poncho though.

I’m surprised at how much I like it. Doesn’t hurt that her hair and makeup looks amazing as well. Gorgeous woman for sure.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I kind of love it. I don’t understand the one sleeve, but I love the rest of it.

And pink is my favorite color, ahem, some people who keep acting like there’s something wrong with pink. It’s flattering to most skin types, it’s soft and pretty and feminine, so why is she being “stuck” with pink? Leave pink alone.

      • Marty says:

Agreed GNAT, I have an olive complexion and love wearing soft pinks. Rihanna looks especially beautiful here.

      • j.eyre says:

Second to everything you said, GNAT – love the color, love everything but the fur sleeve – this is stunning.

      • zinjojo says:

I hate the fur sleeve and wish it weren’t part of the cape/poncho because otherwise I really like it.

And GNAT, agree about pink. I love wearing pink, and think it’s a flattering color for most skin tones. My son also loves wearing pink and has since he was a little guy and informed me that “pink is just a color, not a girl color”. Can’t tell you how happy I was when he made that statement.

      • Shambles says:

GNATTY, to me, it’s easy to think of Rhianna like a pure badass, as she rejects a lot of “traditionally” feminine things (like settling down in long term relationships, etc). Since pink is pretty traditionally feminine, I can see why Bedhead would assume that pink isn’t Rihanna’s jam. But it totally could be, and pink is still the bomb either way. #istandwithpink 😉

And I agree with O’Kitt, the hair and makeup are angelic. She’s such a stunning woman, like a walking work of art.

      • I Choose Me says:

        Yas!

    • Misti64 says:

I just can’t with the real animal skin sleeve.
      She’s gorgeous gorgeous but………….. no.

    • QQ says:

You guyses! me Too it looks EXQUISITE and expensive af… And cozy

    • It'sJustBlanche says:

Was thinking the same thing. She has a stunning face.

    • Original T.C. says:

Agree Kitten. Very nice look on her and her face is so gorgeous. She is aging like Halle Berry, better each year.

    • korra says:

      Agreed. I love it.

  2. fee says:

Poncho looms nice, but $10 000 which I’m guessing is the least is insane.

  3. lower-case deb says:

poncho would be better without that black fur sleeve monstrosity stuck on as if an afterhought.

just the poncho+shawl thing and those boots.

  4. cleveland girl says:

I think they are putting her in pink because October is Breast cancer awareness month and the signature color is pink.

  5. Jena says:

she looks fantastic. She can wear anything

    • terry says:

Dior designs are kind of boring but this poncho looks great on . I like the day time wear better she looks very regal.Good for her.

      • teacakes says:

the cape/poncho reminds me of what Raf Simons used to do at Jil Sander – clean lines, great shapes, but still dramatic and beautiful. This is the first time I’m seeing that assert itself at Dior, and it’s fitting that it is on Rihanna.

  6. Ben Dover says:

    Beautiful.

  7. Andrea 1* says:

This girl is so pretty even without trying….
    Effortlessly gorgeous..

  8. Nene says:

I like the color of the poncho but I prefer the white sleeveless shirt dress in the second photo. Her understated and dewy make-up looks so good.
She really is a very pretty woman but her taste in men s**ks.

P.S; There was a photo of her at the airport I saw on another site where she looks curvier with a slight bump. My first thought was that she is preggie. And here she looks normal.

    • zinjojo says:

Haha, even Rihanna has the burrito baby after a big lunch. Stars, they’re just like us. (but not.) 🙂

  9. J-G says:

I dunno. I like parts of it. Like the middle part. But the sleeve is fur and on top of that kind of ugly and randomly attached.

Also the boots have a clear heel?

I dunno. I know people love Rihinna but to me she’s trying to be a fashion girl and misses more than she hits. Just my opinion though.

  10. We Are All Made of Stars says:

It’s awful. It’s the first time anything has looked bad on her other than her leprechaun pimp ensemble for b*tch bhmm. She even looks depressed in it.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Hah, before I finished your comment I was thinking “Apparently she didn’t see the green thing she wore for the BBHMM performance”

  11. celtlady says:

The girl is stunning. No matter what she wears…..her face is flawless.

  12. vauvert says:

I would have loved the poncho without the fur sleeve and that knitted fugly affair around her neck. And please girl, put some clothes on. Going out in your undies and a coat is just silly, not rad.
Hate the boots, look like some seventies shiny polyester creation, and that pink dress is something a two year old would wear. We get it, she thinks she is really cool and can wear anything but that dress is so underwhelming and frou-frou.
She is very beautiful, her hair and makeup look great here. Why is it that some of these really gorgeous and successful women cannot find a decent guy? She doesn’t want marriage, fine, but she really seems to pick duds.

  13. Nev says:

    This is fashion. Gorgeous.

  14. Sunsetsnow says:

She looks gorgeous. As to Travis Scott, who we know next to nothing about, why can she do so much better than him? He might be a sweet guy. On what basis is he being judged: looks, rapper, status? I’m curious as to the answer, because her track record in the past hasn’t been so good, so this might be an upgrade.

    • Colette says:

      Looks

      • Evasmom says:

That is a shame. If he treats h we r with respect and a queen it shouldn’t matter. Also, he is not yhug. He comes from a middle class background. He attended college but dropped out to pursue music. I think he is attractive. Just because he has certain features an df dark skinned everyone (not this site mind you) labels him as ugly.

    • Mildred Pierce says:

It wouldn’t have been hard for you to do a google search on Travis Scott. He is homophobic, misogynistic, has been put on blast by a former manager for assault against women. I’ll play fair and add alleged assault. His un-attractiveness is the least of his problems. As beautiful, talented and successful as Rihanna is, it says a heck of a lot about her with the company she keeps

      • Evasmom says:

Was this post directed towards me? I didn’t feel.like I needed to do a google search as I was satisfied with the info I had about him. Didn’t know this other stuff so thanks for enlightening me. Yeah, you are right looks are the LEAST of his problems and why on earth does she always go for these men. I have heard that it is for publicity but damn if it is can she at least say no?

      • Sunsetsnow says:

I did do a quick google search. Apparently I did not spend enough time doing so since it was so hard. Next time I will do my proper research.

      • Colette says:

Many women who grow up witnessing domestic violence, substance abuse, etc are attracted to men who are abusive.Read quotes from her father and you will better understand her.Actress Debi Morgan just wrote a book about the cycle of domestic abuse that has existed in her family for generations.

    • Evasmom says:

Thanks Colette. I keep forgetting about her upbringing. Really sad.

  15. Don't kill me I'm French says:

She is gorgeous ( her face,make-up,hair) and even the pink poncho is “magnifique”

  16. The Original G says:

    I never say this…..Gorge!

  17. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

I actually hate the boots with the outfit.

We pretty much lose her whole body when it comes to the giant poncho and the boots.

The poncho itself is pretty cool, hate the fur, and her makeup is perfection. Never fire your makeup person Rihanna, she’s going for gold.

I think Rihanna likes working for Puma more, she seems to integrate their clothes more into her daily looks.

  18. Blue.Melca says:

Looks likes she’s going bald in the other photo, the one with the other pink dress

  19. Andrea says:

Sorry, I did not agree ! The poncho looks great on her but these black boots are aweful and this ugly turquiose handbag did’nt match with pale pink at all! She (or her stylist) can better !!!

  20. bns says:

Her face is out of this world.

  21. Nancy says:

RiRi is my girl crush. Where is G8 though Ms. Fenty?

  22. Corey says:

She would be the perfect representative for a clothing brand because she can make anything look good…..it’s not fair!

  23. Harmony says:

Wearing fur and snakeskin shows Rihanna supports cruelty to animals. She is not dumb so the only other option is that she fully embraces the torture of sentient beings.

Rihanna could have used her beauty to enlighten — but instead she chooses to bring out the ugliness.

    • Jena says:

Not everybody has the same ideas and concepts about animal cruelty. It just like all the people talking about Cecil the lion yet some how they don’t talk about the 1000s of people are being killed everyday yet you say nothing about it but expect people to care about your animal right

      • Fancypants says:

Just because somone is passionate about animal rights doesn’t mean they don’t care about human rights also.

      • Harmony says:

There’s a proven link between animal abuse and human violence.

Skinning animals while still alive. Forcibly ripping out their spinal column while still alive. How can that be defended?

I volunteer at a local food bank. I don’t discriminate on who I care about.

      • Timeless says:

Maybe you guys should stop judging other and forcing your ideals on others

      • Timeless says:

Furthermore the day Cecil died hundred of people were dying in that country that none talked about. All I am saying is people spend so much more time talking about the rights of animals and how others should live their lives yet people are dying everyday and those people don’t spend as much time talking about that. I come from country where we raise and kill our animal for food that doesn’t make us cruel , The skin is used to make mates so stop forcing your ideals on other people …

      • Harmony says:

Rihanna doesn’t need fur for mats or warmth. Animals used for fur or skin are killed while alive in order to keep the fur intact. Real farmers (meaning not business-type factory farms) kill with intent to reduce animal suffering during death.

In what country do real farmers skin animals while alive for subsistence purposes?

      • Timeless says:

Standard answer for you ha! Always a challenge because you cannot justify why you cry over animal right but ignore basic human rights. Give me your email address because you know what I would love to really show you. what I have done. I am from that third world country that CECIL the lion is from. Yes and guess what we didn’t know who this CECIL was . But what we do know is there hundred of people dying incredibly cruel deaths in that country and neighboring South Africa yet all these animal right people are no where to be heard when some burns a child alive in tire . google Xenophobia the images the stories South Africa , Zimbabwe ….I came to this country with nothing . I worked my butt off . I own a college now an actual college… I help student form these countries come to school , I send money … I talk to other about these people….Yes it might not be as grand but I am not seating behind a computer on blog complaining about a pop star and animal. You know why CECIL meant nothing to those people in Zimbabwe and why and American doctor could go and kill CECil it . IT was because those people in that country are worried about basic survival…..so no one is minding the country treasure because the treasure is not so important when the life expectancy is 35 years . Yet no one talk about but people will screaming loudly when an animal dies ….I guess those first world priorities . You overact about stuff that not as important so you feel important and ignore what its important….GIVE me your email address if you really care that much about knowing because I am doing something and hope to do more and get really angry because the world will watch a third world kid a terrible death but cry for lion. Priorities man Priorities

    • Timeless says:

And what country is it okay for people to make an huge issues about animal while people are being killed everyday and they say nothing…oh wait here…

      • The Beldam says:

I agree 100% with Harmony. Peter Singer, in his book Animal Liberation, states that the basic principle of equality does not require equal or identical treatment; it requires equal consideration. This is an important distinction when talking about animal rights. People often ask if animals should have rights, and the answer is, quite simply, “Yes.” l’m not saying that animals should have drivers licenses or the right to vote, just that animals deserve to live their lives free from suffering and exploitation. Philosopher Jeremy Bentham once said that when deciding on a being’s rights, “[t]he question is not ‘Can they reason?’ nor ‘Can they talk?’ but ‘Can they suffer?’” What he meant is that if a being can suffer, then that being deserves the right to equal consideration. It doesn’t matter whether or not that being can talk or can understand mathematics. Regardless of anything else, all animals have the ability to suffer in the same way that human beings do. They feel pain, pleasure, fear, frustration, loneliness, and motherly love. So whenever we do anything that interferes with their needs, we have a moral responsibility to take them into account.
Only prejudice allows us to deny others the rights that we expect to have for ourselves. Whether prejudice is based on race, gender, sexual orientation, or species, it is morally unacceptable. If you wouldn’t eat a dog, why eat a pig? Think about it—both animals have the exact same ability to feel pain, but it is prejudice based on species that allows us to call one “pet” and the other “dinner.”

      • Timeless says:

People have right you ignore every day. Where is this soap box when there people in third world countries being killed but you all have outrage for Cecil the lion. Misplaced outrage indeed. On the same day CEcil died 3 kids were burnt alive in South Africa because there we not South African because of Xenophobia were was the outrage. I am ashamed of these animal rights people who completely ignore that kids are dying yet are outraged when animal dies .. first world problems I guess. I feel people ignore the most important things because they want focus on the less outrages things so they can dramatically overact yet kids dying should cause an overreaction. I guess if you actually reacted to 3 kids being burnt alive you might actually have to do more complain about on blog or direct you anger to pop star but I guess that’s too hard right . Easier to attack a pop start ha so over you people and faux outrage

      • The Beldam says:

So what exactly are YOU doing with YOUR outrage? Do tell.

      • Timeless says:

@Beldam a lot more than you!

      • The Beldam says:

        How so?

      • Timeless says:

@Beldman have you saved any lives … I have …..Have changed any lives …I have…if you want to go in depth you can send me your infor and I can most certainly enlighten you

      • The Beldam says:

Oh please go into depth. I’m sure everyone would simply LOVE to hear what you’ve done for human rights. I simply cannot wait to be enlightened 😉

  24. teacakes says:

OOF she’s freaking gorgeous. And I don’t mean pretty, I mean out-of-this-world, stunningly, discombobulatingly gorgeous. And clearly her makeup artist likes showing that off!

She’s also possibly the only celebrity who could actually elevate Raf’s Dior designs to looking like something I’d want to wear. Dior has the most stunning spokesmodels of any fashion house – Cotillard, Rihanna, even Natalie Portman – but they often look underwhelming on the red carpet. And Rih is a much better model for them on the red carpet than Jennifer Lawrence (the other Dior spokesmodel in her age range)

    • Pondering thoughts says:

Perhaps Dior just doesn’t chose it’s models wisely?
Dior is about “intelligent rebellion” and elegance and I don’t think Rihanna can pull that off. They want to appeal to a younger audience but when chosing Riri and JLaw then I wonder to whom they want to appeal to? Those who can afford Dior won’t be drawn into their shops by Riri and JLaw (and yes I am a fan of Jennifer Lawrence).

  25. Naddie says:

She should stick to modeling. She’s effortlessly beautiful, and this stuff she’s wearing looks amazing on her, but as a singer, she fails. Her show in Rio was crappy as usual.

    • Timeless says:

I thought the show was great and so did a lot of people

    • Mildred Pierce says:

I thought Rock and Rio was an awesome show. I’ve watched the whole set on you tube multiple times 🙂 And I’ve yet to see a report from a fan who attended the show who didn’t have a great time.

      • Naddie says:

A well established singer like her hardly finds a demanding audience. Also, she gets a pass because of her looks and persona. Her songs are weak just like her stage presence. I’ve seen her live in 2011 and was glad that the ticket was cheap.

      • Timeless says:

She is not BeyoncĂ© or Janet or any else she is Rihanna and what she does on stage works for her and her audience those who don’t understand don’t have to watch her

      • Naddie says:

Timeless she’s bad even without comparing to others. And since she’s a public entertainer, critics are part of her job. I analyzed her work since I’ve been her audience when I was younger, and I think she’s overrated, my opinion, period.

    • Pondering thoughts says:

She doesn’t really produce good lyrics and the instrumental parts sound more and more alike. Her song “still got mo money” or whatever it was called basically justified and glorified sex work.
      Just no.

Perhaps she tries to broaden her work range by becoming more famous for her fashion than for her singing.

  26. Mildred Pierce says:

Rihanna is too gorgeous for a own good. She just radiates that she smells really good. Lol.

I think Rihanna will settle down. I can’t imagine her not having children. So eventually I believe she will change gears and have a family life. She’ll do this once the career slows down, I feel. Kids and being in a long term rl or married doesn’t fit her brand at the moment. As cold as that may sound.

  27. OhDear says:

She’s the only person who could pull that thing off. With anyone else, the poncho would be wearing them.

    • Pondering thoughts says:

I think it is close: that poncho is wearing her in some pics and only in others she manages to pull it off.

She starts becoming more famous for her fashion than for her music. And I still don’t think Dior did well when they chose her. She lacks elegance. Her “secret garden” video with Dior didn’t make anybody come out for her.

  28. Lizzieb says:

    She looks fabulous.

  29. alicegrey12 says:

Drop Dead Diva Beauty. The dress RiRi wore is gorgeous.

  30. waitwhat says:

What is people’s issue with fur? Fur has been worn for centuries because it is not only beautiful but practical in cold weather. Animal rights activists produced a lot of propaganda against fur manufacturers because, like most tyrannical people and groups, they feel everyone should adhere to their views. The videos that have been made by PETA and the like show specific cases of animals being skinned in factories in China, where there are few regulations on production. Just like eating meat and foul, there is a “green” way to do it. I grew up going to Canada every Christmas to visit relatives, and a fur is the only material that kept is warm. Also, the furs we bought were produced by local humane companies that took leftover skins from farmers. That is one reason fur can be soooo expensive, due to the costs associated with farming the animals humanely.
What bothers me most about the backlash against fur is that people decided they didn’t like it based off media Propaganda and not independent research and thought. Every documentary made isn’t altruistic and often can be as”real” as reality tv. We have to stop believing everything fed to us and start thinking again. Have an opinion that goes against the grain, it’s OK.
    Rant over.

  31. Britney says:

    1 word: FUGLY.

  32. FrenchGirlChi says:

I actually like it and would wear it just like she did…
    I love the pink too.
I also like the dress she has on in the second pic

  33. TwistBarbie says:

Scroll-down fug! It was so fresh and pretty and then….those hideous Halowe’en Hooker costume boots. No girl.
