Amal Clooney’s London press conference style: professional & conservative?

FFN_Alamuddin_Amal_FFUK_100515_51870034

Here are some photos of Amal Clooney out and about in London earlier this morning. She was on her way to a press conference to discuss the imprisoned former president of the Maldives, and to meet the former first lady of the Maldives. Amal spent a week or two in the Maldives back in September, meeting with her client in jail and working on his case. One of the barristers working on the case was shot just before she arrived too.

I don’t have an ID on her suit in these photos. It’s professional and fine, but there’s a little bit of sexiness with the jacket lining, which has what looks like a silk animal print. If I had to change anything, I would have swapped out the high-neck blouse for just a simple, crisp white button-down. Her hair looks great though. Update: The suit/ensemble is Dolce & Gabbana. She’s been wearing so much D&G lately. Did they offer her a contract or something?

Here’s a short clip of her press conference today:

Incidentally, there are some photos floating around of Amal and George out in London over the weekend – go here to see. They went out to dinner with friends (like Matt Damon, Rande and Cindy) and Amal wore Dolce & Gabbana thigh-high lace boots which… if I’m being harsh, the boots made her look like a street-walker. Her style is so all-over-the-place.

Can someone get that lady a bagel? Thanks.

    • Tiffany says:

I try not to throw the food offering around but…she was not always this thin. I remember her coming out photos and she was very perportionate compared to her look now. The pants look like they are engulfing her.

      • MCraw says:

Idk I can’t tell. She always looked emaciated to me. Knobby joints and all.

That said, the difference I see is in her beauty. Not sure if she had work done, but her hair and m/u is on another level. She looks gorgeous.

Now, for those dinner fotos… Girl, close your legs and sit them DOWN.

And of course her style is different for different settings. What’s the point of fashion if you can’t change it up for each setting? Or else you have Sofia Vergara. I look professional, sporty, pimpy, sexy sometimes all in the same day. That’s a silly thing to criticize.

    • Sarah says:

I think the same. She is SOOOOOOO skinny. Look at her legs? How do they hold her up?

    • Selena Castle says:

I know right? She looks deathly in these photos, poor thing.

    • JudyK says:

She looks malnourished…bones covered with skin.

      • Sochan says:

        The camera adds 10 pounds.

Let’s let that sink in. In person, therefore, she looks even thinner.

    • Ruby says:

She is looking skeletal. It is such a shame to watch women disappear before our eyes once they achieve a public persona.

    • Pandy says:

God yeah. Painful to look at those legs and those size 0 pants.

    • MMRB says:

I normally wouldn’t, but i have to comment on this because i find it impossibly rude and offensive when people say things of this nature about someone who is thin. It’s akin to any other body shaming and you’re really pointing out your own insecurities, not hers.

      a) I have a good friend who is thin like this and she eats me off the charts all the time

      b) I work in the legal profession and travel often for work, to remote places which don’t have the kind of cuisine my mouth and stomach say yes to at the same time. I also lose weight like crazy because and or when the stress level is high, and it doesn’t mean I’m not eating.

Stop shaming people for being thin.

      • Mary says:

I don’t think she looks thin at all. I think she looks gaunt. I think she looks unhealthy. I think she looks like thinspiration for pro-ana.

      • Amy says:

If her friends are talking to her because she’s too thin that’s one thing. But (as a larger girl), I don’t think it’s right to comment on anyone’s body. Not sure when that became okay, but it’s not in my book.

      • MMRB says:

@mary. It’s an opinion. Not a fact, and statements like that are uneducated, wildly presumptious and in general, unkind and quite obviously “your thoughts”.

I bet you’d change your mind if we put a picture of you on the Internet and let everyone have a go at you.

      • mp says:

If I were amal’s friend, I would express concern that she is swimming in her Dolce and gabbana suit… Like, is your thyroid ok, are you eating enough/taking care of yourself? Any body change is shocking and people will always comment on it, even though it sucks that this is the world we live in. I’m just tired of celebs saying that their metabolism “decided to speed up” (Emma stone, Duch. Kate, for example)

I know it seems concern trolly but I do wish these people would get help because there are many with anorexia/etc. who do use these women as thinspo. If peeps are naturally skinny – fine! but very few people are naturally skinny. And when they suddenly lose A LOT of weight as they get more famous, that is suspicious. And that seems to have happened with ms. clooney.

  2. GlimmerBunny says:

She is so beautiful in the video. I finnd her very strinking in pictures too, but she is truly lovely and softer-looking on film.

  3. Rachel says:

She’s a better public speaker than Duchess Kate. Not a single hair flip!

    • neutral says:

      She’s probably had more practice.

    • woodstock_schulz says:

I don’t know how it is in the UK, but in Canadian law schools there is typically an advocacy class which helps you to learn to speak in the courtroom/in front of an audience. So she’s just exercising those skills.

      • Chica says:

You don’t need an advocacy class to be a good public speaker. Not everyone needs training to be something they’re naturally good at. It’s same reason why not all attorney’s are good in the courtroom. If you’re shit at PS now amount of training is going to make you a natural and charismatic ally effective. I wish you’d all stop trying to degrade and discredit her ambitions, accomplishments, abilities, and success. NONE of you know much about her at all that hasn’t been distorted through some media lens one way or the other.

  4. Lucky says:

I imagine it’s hard to be that slender, and her frame looks like it is just how she is built. Clothing always looks ill fit though and I bet it is hard to find great, casual, clothing.

    • Kitten says:

      (Pardon me while I concern-troll but…)

I disagree so much. This is not natural thin-ness. She’s not even particularly slight or small-boned IMO. To me, her body looks stressed at this weight–even her face looks drawn.

I like her a lot and I think she’s a very attractive woman, but I do not think she looks healthy.

      • petan says:

There was this one photo of her before she had her nose surgery and her face wasn’t this gaunt and skinny.

      • Tulip Garden says:

kitten , I agree. She is gorgeous but unnaturally thin, gaunt IMO.

      • Zingara says:

I think this is the point commenters are making here; not skinny-shaming, but comparing the vast difference in her weight from when she first came on the scene. And as someone iuthread stated, the camera adds several kilos, so imagine what she’s like in person. She’s a beautiful, accomplished woman, of that there’s no doubt, but she is way too thin for her frame, and looks unhealthy. I find it sad when someone of her age, education and life experience gets sucked into believing ultra-skinny is the best. Her clothes don’t sit well on her anymore. But if she’s happy, I guess that’s all that matters.

    • Nina says:

I agree about the fitting. It looks odd. If the pants were fitted around her waist rather than her hips, it would’ve transformed the look.

As for her style being all over the place, I think it is more an indication of a person who enjoys many different styles rather than someone who has an under-developed sense of her own style. To me, at least, she appears to have two basic settings; professional/aging and playful/absurd.

  5. bros says:

oof she is so skinny. I keep wanting to swap her head out with keith richards, since they basically have the same body. also suede shoes in the rain? bad idea.

  6. meme says:

Great suit but YIKES woman, eat a sammich.

  7. Babyswans says:

I have such envy of her professional wardrobe!

  8. Naddie says:

I like her face. It’s not tradictionally beautiful, but it is very interesting and strong.

  9. OSTONE says:

I have hair envy! The pictures of her with the boots… Yikes.

    • meme says:

Yeah, the epitome of elegance. Thankfully she had on tights.

    • overhere says:

Methinks she was a bit tipsy in those nearly foo flashing photos. That may explain why she doesn’t mind GC’s alcohol problem. She’s a drinker too.

      • laura in LA says:

Well, if she doesn’t eat, then it wouldn’t take much more than a sip of something for her to get tipsy.

Speaking of which, with her shoulders pinned back and that heavy bag on stiletto heels, she looks like a light breeze might topple her over.

      • Wellsie says:

I hope she was tipsy when she put *on* those boots. It’s nice to be adventurous with free gear, but I would have buried those in the closet.

        Love the suit though.

      • evermore says:

She looked a bit tipsy to me too.

  10. Bishg says:

The Dolce and Gabbana look was totally stolen from !The Nanny named Fran”.
She truly is a more sophisticated, thinner version of Fran Drescher!

  11. Nicole says:

I KNOW WHO SHE REMINDS ME OF!! They don’t look anything alike but when she talks, she seriously vibes Princess Diana.

  12. noway says:

I like her suit, but she is so thin. She really has lost weight this is looking unhealthy.

I am convinced that her chamber is using her for publicity purposes, not that I would blame them. A lot of the cases that she works on now benefit from public outcries of support, such as this one, the Elgin Marbles, Northern Ireland’s hooded men and the Al Jazeera journalist- who were finally freed by the Egyptian President. I am not questioning her legal expertise, as I really do not know, but these cases benefit from the publicity she garners. They are not won in a courtroom but in the public forum with pressure to do the “right” thing. I think this could back fire though if used too much and the legal community starts to see a PR person and not a lawyer. One QC already said something, but then backed off. I just think this kind of publicity fades and backfires quicker than people think.

  13. Jaded says:

The woman is a total bone rack – she really needs to dial back on the thinning. Her face is starting to look very gaunt.

  14. Kitten says:

Is that all her real hair? How does she stay THAT thin and still have healthy hair with so much body? When I’ve been severely underweight, my hair was thin and lifeless.

    • Fa says:

Some of them are hair extensions is not her hair

      • teacakes says:

I have yet to see any receipts on the claim that she’s got hair extensions, unlike Duchess Dolittle of Cambridge who at least had her wefts showing.

She is of Middle Eastern descent, I’d believe it much more likely that the hair grew out of her own head.

  15. Evie says:

I love her hair and colouring, she’d be beautiful with a few pounds. It’s painful to look at someone so obviously hungry frail as opposed to naturally sticklike.

I still wonder as to their marriage though. They publicised her and the relationship so much and for no discernible reason. It was such a turnaround from a previously private Clooney and insane to push her into the limelight like that. The backlash has got to be affecting her emotionally, it is hard enough for decades long seasoned celebrities to cope with.

  16. Jayna says:

It’s very professional after only days before she’s flashing everybody with her mini dress up as she’s getting in a car and looking like anything but an international lawyer set to give a press conference in two days. Get it together, Amal.

    • Beatrice says:

I saw those photos and it looked like she was posing, not caught off guard. Someone suggested they were staged to show of those horrible lace boots. Not a fan of celebs flashing the paps.

      • whoa says:

She was definitely doing it on purpose. She probably got too excited to show off those gaudy lace boots she got for free and forgot that she was wearing a dress. Thank god she was wearing tights otherwise we would’ve seen her knickers.

    • Saks says:

I have to disagree. If she does her work properly, why wouldn’t she be allowed to have fun in her spare time?

      • Montrealise says:

The problem is that she is a celebrity, thanks to her marriage, and every panty flash is photographed for the world to see – including her clients and colleagues.

      • Jayna says:

        @Montrealise, exactly.

      • noway says:

She can have fun, but not sure how many people want a lawyer who looks drunk showing off her private parts all over the media. Just saying.

Also, can we just admit these crazy Direct Mail photos are staged or at least called shots. They are shooting from the far car door with perfect light. How not to get in a car my A()*)* Who gets in a limo slides their legs up and shows their privates and smiles at the cameras. Yes that is normal if you drank a fair amount of the thousands of bottles of tequila George and Rande get.

  17. boredblond says:

    Michael Richards with makeup

  18. Citresse says:

Anorexic. Her posture looks strained especially in top photo probably because her weak body can’t manage the weight of her purse.

  19. Fa says:

Here a letter address to the lead lawyer of this case (the man who was with her in that trip) & this letter talk about her client & it wasn’t address to her, this prove that her chamber using her as PR people so papz can fellow her fashion parade

    http://t.co/yevIGH0Krx

  20. snapdragon says:

I hate the waist of those pants and she looks so frail — not good.

  21. Montrealise says:

I really like her pantsuit – very professional and chic at the same time. There are just two changes I’d make: 1) since she has a long torso, the pants would be more flattering if the waistband was at the waist rather than around the hips, and if the bottoms hit at the instep rather than at the ankles; and 2) I’d add just one discreet, conservative, expensive piece of jewellery, maybe a brooch on the lapel.

  22. Belle says:

I love her style. She knows how to look professional, and on her off time she seems like she has a lot of fun playing with her look – as we all should.

  23. teacakes says:

That is one great pantsuit, and I want all of it. The turtleneck is actually very on-trend and quite weather-appropriate for this time of year I suppose, but I do agree Amal is extremely skinny.

  24. LA Juice says:

every time I see her I think- My god, those ankles would snap like twigs. she looks so damn frail. physically frail.

  25. vespernite says:

She is ridiculously thin and I know it isn’t her normal body, because her sister is much more healthy looking. And this outfit is awful and does her slender shape no favors. It looks like her trousers could fall down at any moment.

  26. Sochan says:

I don’t think most nice clothes look good on her. Her best (and only) truly gorgeous look (IMO) was that red gown at … Oscars? GG? I can’t remember what awards show it was. GOD that dress was amazing. Other than that, she’s just too thin. She does not look healthy. The blow-out hair and good makeup does off-set it a little in her face, but she still looks gaunt and drawn. I think she would be so stunning with 20 pounds on her.

  27. Reece says:

    1. That’s a gorgeous pantsuit! I am so in love with it!
    2. Hair Envy…not that I don’t love my curls but total Hair Envy.
    3. That video reminds me of Colbert’s question to Clooney about what it’s like being the arm candy. HA!

  28. khaveman says:

I think she appears so thin to many because so many in the world are generally 25-30 pounds overweight. The new “norm” is heavier. She’s just thinner than that.

  29. Cam says:

Didn’t George feel compelled to come out and do an interview about her dressing style being “eccentric”?

  30. Nimbolicious says:

Not a compelling public speaker at all. She’s just being trotted out because of her high profile marriage. A mannequin with a prepared statement.

  31. golden retriever says:

I look at these pics and all I see is someone struggling with pressure/stress and possibly an eating disorder. As a veteran and survivor of the eating disorder scene I really hope she can catch it early, understand it and develop other/better behaviors to deal with her unquie situation.
