Cate Blanchett in Esteban Cortazar & Givenchy at LFF: tragic or amazing?

It really has been a spectacular few weeks of non-stop fashion p0rn from Cate Blanchett. It’s sort of crazy – even when I’m not totally in love with what she’s wearing, I appreciate that she’s still making some bold style choices. These photos are from Cate’s appearance at the BFI London Film Festival. Cate and Rooney Mara were there to promote Carol. For the big premiere, Cate wore this Esteban Cortazar gown in navy and white. It sparkles, it’s DRAMA, it’s fun and it actually looks nice on her. Meanwhile, Rooney wore this utterly cloying and twee Alexander McQueen gown to the premiere. Pink/nude ruffles = the worst.

Also pretty bad? Cate’s photocall look earlier in the day – she wore an ensemble by Givenchy and that cheap satin and lace jumpsuit is absolutely horrid. WTF?

Before she left for London, Cate was doing the media rounds in New York, which included a stop by Watch What Happens Live (only I don’t think Cate’s interview was done live). Andy Cohen had Cate and Julie Andrews on his couch, which is pretty amazing. He also made Cate play Plead the Fifth, and one of the questions was “Marry F—k Kill, Viggo Mortensen, Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom.” Cate chose to f—k Viggo, marry Elijah and kill Orlando. Bless her. She was also asked who she was most annoyed with after losing an Oscar to them. As in, she’s lost Oscars to Tilda Swinton, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Hudson and Marion Cotillard. After she heard the list out loud, she happily declared: “I hate them all!”

  1. Don't kill me I'm French says:

All looks better with a smile on the face ( Rooney ! Smileee )

    • Shijel says:

Maybe she’s got an ugly smile. I have an ugly smile, I go from a pretty elfin’ woman to someone who looks like they got hit by train in an instant when I smile and it makes me feel self-conscious. So I only smile when there’s something to smile about, like freshly made curry or a warm bed. You know, in the situations where I’m not required to look absolutely stunning and put-together.

So really, I don’t have problem with her (or any woman) not smiling.

Both women look beautiful, awkward dresses or not.

      • embertine says:

She has a beautiful smile that totally lights up her face, but I agree: she should smile if she wants to, not because randoms on the internet tell her to.

      • Misulinka says:

You right, and we all need more of Tom Fords no smile face practice!

    • Ann says:

Eh. Women don’t need to smile all the time.

      • Don't kill me I'm French says:

My commentary concern the men also ( I think about Tom Hardy who doesn’t smile on the red carpet since Batman premiere)
I think the outfits here are fugly but Blanchet smiles so it looks better

      • FLORC says:

True, but anything would be an improvement over that scowl.

      • Kitten says:

What FLORC said. She looks like she’d rather be anywhere but there. Have a little fun, FFS, it’s a film festival!

Also worth noting that people always complain that Affleck looks miserable all the time so it goes both ways.

      • Kate says:

Yeah, but Mara’s just expressionless, blank. She’s not scowling, or grimacing, or rolling her eyes every few seconds. She’s not clearly high as a kite.

The men who get called out for not smiling look actively pissed off or are making a production of looking bored. They have to be very expressive about it before it’s ever brought up.

    • Sarah (another one) says:

I am so over the Mara girls and their constant scowl.

      • Blackcat says:

Mara always looks like she’s getting a colonoscopy. We get it! You’re a serious actress
But give me a break! She’s at a film festival. How hard can that be?

      • Amber says:

God me too.Such miserable looking women.

    • lolz says:

I don’t like either outfit on Cate but that smile on her face is beautiful.

    • sarah says:

How does Rooney photograph so tall?? Lol, what is her secret!! Next to Cate she looks soo short but that first photo she looks of average or tall height, not her actual 5’3.
Some people don’t like their smile, i dont hate her for it, I think it’s just part of her personality.

  2. Lilacflowers says:

Did Cate spill an entire pitcher of water in the lap of that jumpsuit? The dress is bold and cool and gives off a Halloween vibe but she can carry it.

Surprised to see Rooney in something that isn’t all white or all black but she looks like she’s wearing a nightgown.

  3. peakyhills says:

    Cate rocks.

  4. Esteph says:

    I love Cate!

Does anyone else get KStew vibes off Rooney? Like she can’t be bothered with fame and all that comes with it.

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

one of my neighbor who is movie journalist met her twice and what he said about her ” she is not aloof…she is shy”
(I hope he writes a book or long article on the backstage of the interviews.)

  5. Elisabeth says:

Cate could wear a trash bag and look amazing. That’s why I gave my daughter that name

  6. LAK says:

Mara looks like the in-house McQueen models. That dress is fug. And it pians me to say that.

I adore Cate’s style, even when that extends to pyjamas masquerading as day wear!!

    • holly says:

Imagine that dress in crimson, emerald green, or another jewel colour and it would be a winner!

  7. Esmom says:

I love Rooney’s look. But then I have always loved her style.

I like Cate’s hair with the casual look. But ever since someone (here, I think) said her face is turning into The Joker’s, I can’t unseen that.

    • belle de jour says:

“I love Rooney’s look. But then I have always loved her style.”

Me, too. I think she looks elegant and pretty – and pulls off all those delicate ruffles & pale tones because the cut of the dress is so precise. Slightly tongue-in-cheek with her severe make-up and hair. Very chic.

  8. MsGoblin says:

Rooney, if you are THAT miserable, get out of the business! There are thousands of other young females – more talented, even – who would love to take your place.

  9. Nori says:

Cate looks amazing in that sparkly navy gown. I’m not crazy about the earlier jumpsuit but her face looks lovely; happy and relaxed.

Not a fan of Rooney’s look. The dress is rather hideous.

  10. Vesta says:

Cate’s blue dress is interesting. I like its space opera vibes.

    • boredblond says:

I saw this dress last week in a late 30’s/ early 40s movie..sorry, I forget which one, but the style in long and shorter versions frequently popped up in films of that period–satin, no glitter.

My, they look just thrilled to be standing together 😎

      • Vesta says:

Ooh, I’d like to see that film. But when you think about it, the dress is actually surprisingly timeless and versatile design.

    • belle de jour says:

Isn’t it fun & a little goofy? I was picturing her as a tres glam jellyfish in her black squid ink hostess muumuu, throwing a very fancy underwater party in some exclusive sparkly part of the sea.

  11. embertine says:

“Tux jacket over fancy jimjams” is my new aesthetic. *puts on sunglasses*

    DEAL WITH IT

  12. meme says:

I love Rooney’s dress and dislike enormously both of Cate’s looks. She’s starting to come off as very haughty and don’t tell me she hasn’t had Botox, because she has.

  13. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Cate is the emperor’s clothes. She can wear a hideous bedazzled muumuu (no offense, Kitten) that makes her look 110 or a tuxedo jacket over tacky satin what the hell and everybody says she looks faaaaabulous. Ugh. I’ve seen her well dressed on the red carpet once or twice, when she had a stylist. Her own taste is terrible.

    • Kitten says:

You’ve offended my dearest muumuus for the last time.

I don’t mind Cate’s style, it’s Rooney’s dress game that I cannot stand. I think that pink thing is absolutely HIDEOUS. Then again, I have never ever liked anything about her so there’s that.

    • Nori says:

Or maybe, you know, people actually think she can pull those looks off? She hasn’t achieved that kind of status in fashion just because people like her. Many would actually think that she isn’t even that likeable but they still like her style. I’m one of those people and I think she usually looks pretty damn good even when she’s wearing something tricky or even fugly. She has that “It-factor”, IMO.

  14. I Choose Me says:

I like the black? navy? sparkly gown. Everything else is blah. I kind of like Rooney’s gown but I wish it was a different colour.

  15. Jess says:

Love Cate’s dress and hate Rooney’s dress.

  16. Jayna says:

Cate is so stunning. Even clothes I don’t like on her she still manages to wear them and always have a touch of elegance, not the opposite where they wear her.

  17. anne_000 says:

The dress looks like some kind of marine animal, like a sting ray or something, or maybe even kelp. Kind of gross and creepy.

  18. coolkidsneverhavethetime says:

    Amazing.

  19. Elizabeth says:

The pink ruffle dress is VERY twee, but it could work on the right person – imagine it in Lupita for example. FLAWLESS.

  20. So Mara Rooney must subscribe to the whole look of…… im a minimalist, nineties looking waif model chick but with bold makeup and with chicly simplistic hair…..

(it comes off kinda like teenage into her big sisters makeup)

The only person I know who can home run that type of look….. is (love her or loather her) Kristen Stewart, although I wish she would stop slouching and could be taller

  21. Mrs.Krabapple says:

Two words came to mind when I saw Cate’s dress: “Marine Flatworm”

    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5c/Flatworm_marine.jpg

  22. Danielle says:

My favorite is the jump suit and blazer. Obviously I’m in the minority.

    • Nina says:

No I agree. We can sit in the corner and discuss. I don’t care for either of the dresses- both too ruffly and blah.

  23. Pondering thoughts: Let's not change anything because somebody might get upset by the changes :-S says:

Cate’s dress is beautiful but it can’t shine against that black-floor-background.
