Lily Rose Depp on fame: ‘I grew up with the media circus. I didn’t choose it’

Lily Rose Depp

Lily Rose Depp usually wears a serious expression in posed photos, but these candids show just how much her face lights up when she smiles. Gorgeous! She is only 16 years old, but she’s been famous (through her super-famous parents) since she was born. She’s certainly used her connections to for fashion (Karl Lagerfeld loves her, and she’s one of his current muses) and to launch a movie career. In the first regard, she’ll probably be successful with paid endorsements as long as she desires. As far as acting goes, we’ll have to see what happens. She’ll soon star promoting some Kevin Smith horror comedy called Yoga Hosers, which sounds a little ridiculous. Maybe she’ll try something deeper too, but hey, she’s a teenager. I don’t think she attends traditional school but could be wrong. She had time to attend all the Paris fashion week shows, which is where she did this interview with I-D magazine.

Lily touches upon her unavoidable fame but says her parents taught her to not make a big deal out of it. Attention comes with the territory, and she doesn’t shy away from the entertainment industry, but she also didn’t choose to be born with famous parents. I think being born wealthy and with connections does have many more benefits than downsides, but Lily Rose does seem (relatively) grounded:

On her inherited fame: “I grew up with the media circus. My whole life. My parents were very calm about the photographers, the fans, and all that. But I understood right away that I hadn’t done anything to deserve that attention. No matter what happens, it will be there. I didn’t choose it. You just can’t take that too seriously. You need to live your life. And stay calm.”

On her acting career “For now, what I like most is making films. I’m a Gemini, very spontaneous. For now, I’m having fun doing it, we’ll see what happens later.”

[From I-D at Vice]

The interviewer describes Lily Rose as “polite” but “nonchalant.” We’ve certainly never heard about any bad behavior, and the journo mentions that Vanessa Paradis keeps a watchful eye out for her daughter backstage (as does Lagerfeld). It’s good that she’s not taking films too seriously because being a kid can only happen once in a lifetime. I look forward to seeing what comes of her career.

I’m getting pretty tired of these “son of”, “daughter of” taking the places of someone genuinely interesting and talented.

    • Aren says:

Me too. Most are not talented or even good looking. Without their parent’s money, they would never stand a chance.

    • Eleonor says:

While I see all your points, I often ask myself: If Iwas in her (Lily Rose) wouldn’t I profit of those connection ? Would I act different from them ? Answer is: I don’t know.

      • perplexed says:

I agree. Plus, it’s not like their parents really steer them in another direction (i.e going to med school — just throwing that out as an example, not saying every celebrity’s kid should choose that path). Parents usually help you to figure out your options, but if the only option they’re showing you is the entertainment industry, then it figures the kids would choose that one.

Johnny Depp’s daughter fits a certain Hollywood convention of beauty and maybe learned some acting techniques from her dad, so in that sense I don’t think it’s as weird that she’d want to be an actress as opposed to say, Tori Spelling. I figure there must be some segment of the population that will find Lily Depp photogenic or whatever else is required for that career when she grows up.

      • Ally8 says:

I meant as a viewer, I’m not only not interested in progeny projects, I actively avoid them, e.g. any brand with an advertising campaign featuring Kendall Jenner.

They’re not remotely relatable OR aspirational to me. Just little privileged brats with little real life experience to project or inspire.

Someone like Kate Moss in modelling or Jennifer Lawrence in acting who rose up through star quality and graft communicate a far wider range of emotion and stories in their very “being” on camera.

    • vauvert says:

Yep! She is pretty and fresh faced but I think her mom was a lot more unique / striking at that age. I seriously doubt she would be Karl’s muse if she were an unknown.
I agree, anyone who has connections will use them, and as long as they stay humble or realistic and recognize that all the doors opened for them, I am ok with it.
What bothers me is stupid statements that essentially state that success would have come regardless – hell no. Tons of pretty girls want to be Chanel models and get paid a mint to walk the runway and look pretty during fashion week, but how many actually do??

    • Franca says:

It would be more tolerable if they acknowledged their luck. The only people I saw do that were the Gleeson brothers who said having a famous dad opened many doors but they had to work hard to keep working. And Ivanka Trump also said something similar. Most people act like they did everything themselves.

And Lily started getting papped etc this year when she started acting and modelling. She is courting fame big time.

She is a very pretty girl. Prettier than her mother, IMO.

    • Pandy says:

Agree. Was just coming on to post that I don’t care about a bobble-headed 16 yo daughter of famous people.

  2. Eleonor says:

    I like her

  3. aenflex says:

    Vanessa is the shizzzz.

  4. Skyblue says:

    Yawn!

  5. Bluebell says:

She’s a beautiful girl (which I shouldn’t be commenting on as I’m a 27 year old woman and she’s a child), but I only mention it to say, that I think she would have or could have been a model even if she had no famous connections. She’s very beautiful and photogenic.

That said, I don’t think she should get any articles like this until she’s 18. Right now she’s still a child and should be given her privacy.

    • kai says:

Eh, she wants to be seen and written about.

    • Hannah says:

She’s too small to be a model. Paradis is 5.2.This girl looks the same height. I think she’s pretty but she’s not model material. The smaller models are at least 5.7 or 5.9.
She’s given modelling opportunities because of who her parents are.
I don’t know about acting as I haven’t seen her act.

  6. Chelly says:

They absolutely have more benefits than the average ‘nobodies’ who arent afforded these amazing opportunities & luxuries…eho have to grind from the bottom of the barrel to be lucky enough to get to the top of the list. I dont hate & think hey, they are fortunate, fortunate people, i just always hope they know that. Unfortunately, most just feel entitled because of it

  7. Chloe says:

I hope she doesn’t read this since I don’t want to be mean to a 16 year old child but objectively speakng, her mom was so much more striking at the same age. Very waifish and really pretty and distinctive looking.

    • Nicole says:

Good thing teenagers are so bad with technology.

I think she looks like her own person and it’s silly to compare her to someone you discovered when you were probably that age yourself. She’s obviously very pretty, and she’s in for a long run of being very good looking as her parents are gorgeous.

      • hmph says:

I think your comment is just as bad….right now she is only 16, you have no idea what she will look like in 5 years or 10 years. Youth is very forgiving.
And what if she wasn’t attractive to you? Would she be worth less in your eyes? In for the long run? Says who? Fame is very fickle, especially these days and if Johnny doesn’t remain in the public eye he too will be more or less forgotten. If you want to have your legacy remain relevant, you have to keep being in the public eye. Only a few people can go away and still be remembered and Johnny isn’t one of those people.
She is also a smoker and does smoke weed with her much older ADULT male and female friends. And yes, it has affected her skin which you can see in her own close up pics on instagram. It’s sad that she has chosen to smoke like her parents but her life and her choice and she does it to keep her weight in check.
She has Johnny’s dark brown eyes which can sometimes look creepy on someone white skinned. She looks like most girls her age tbh and she is also very short so probably wouldn’t model if it weren’t for her parents.

      • @hmph says:

Are you kidding right? Johnny has just been named the biggest star of all time by an objective barometer of the “Star Meter” in IMDB, a fact as simple as he’s the most searched about star in the past 25 years. Pitt, Jolie, DiCaprio, etc, are all behind him. And you believe he’ll disappear and be forgotten? hahaha. He’s a living legend.
His legacy, Edward Scissorhands or Captain Jack Sparrow will be remembered forever, even if you don’t like it

      • Jules says:

@hmph This comment makes no sense.

Lily doesn’t look like most girls her age. She is unique looking.

And Johnny Depp is an icon. He will always be relevant.

    • Mrs. Darcy says:

I think she is stunning and has aspects of both of her parents, her dark eyes remind me of her Dad, and lbh the lack of a gap tooth. To me she is even more gamine than Vanessa. But it feels weird to even be commenting on a 16 year old’s appearance to me too – hope Vanessa is really keeping a close eye on her. I’ve seen pictures of her smoking, I guess that comes with the territory of being French but still, so young, ugh!

      • Luna says:

It isn’t weird if the person works as a model and profits from that.
TBH, i Don’t find her anywhere near pretty, no matter who her parents are, she’s just an awkard teen.

      • Chloe says:

These celebs need to do better with their kids or stop having them altogether. Smoking pot at 16?! Pot is linked with brain degeneration. I feel for all of these kids. Lots of money but no privacy or reality.

      • Maria A. says:

She has her father’s cheekbones too, if I recall from a photo I saw of her when she was younger.

  8. Jegede says:

She’s the image of Depp to me.

Same dark eyes, same cheekbones and same wide mouth.

The only thing she shares with Vanessa is the hairstyle/colour.

    • Kitten says:

Yeah I definitely see more Depp in her features…

      • Jegede says:

        Yup, I always have.

If her hair went dark, Lily’s ‘resemblance’ to Vanessa would disappear entirely.

Then again I find girls often look more like their fathers.

      • Amide says:

        @Jegede, @Kitten

I so AGREE with you guys.
When people say she is the image of Vanessa its always in the most superficial settings, or when she or Vanessa are styled to within an inch of their lives to deliberate it as both are Chanel Muses. The same way Claudia Schiffer was styled to ‘resemble’ Bardot.
Even in the above pics posted apart from their bob style hair, they don’t look similar to me. Scrape their hair back in buns, wipe off the makeup, and feature by feature Lily Rose is ALL Depp. (Lucky for her cause Johnny has always been a pretty dude, complete with cheekbones and pout).
Funny thing is their son Jack is the one who actually looks like Vanessa, right down to the nose and teeth, but he’s not styled in fashion so its not commented on.

      • Bebe says:

Nah! She’s the spitting image of Paradis when she was young. You Americans just don’t know what she looked like before she was depps partner and ex wife.

      • Sticks says:

Agreed, looks more like Depp. Love Vanessa. Have since Jo Le Taxi and I disagree that Lily Rose is a spitting image of Vanessa at that time.

      • Jegede says:

        @Bebe

        Huh? You Americans?

Believe it or not there are posters here from other parts of the world, thank you very much.

    • Luca76 says:

So funny I think she looks a lot like Vanessa as I commented below firstly the coloring, the jaw line, and the eye shape.

    • Shambles says:

Oh yeah. That last picture of her in the purple-ish dress with that moody look on her face… That’s young, brooding, too cool for it Johnny all the way.

  9. Luca76 says:

Her and her mom look so much alike although she has something of Johnny that seems to soften her entirely (better for acting not as striking for modeling).

  10. smcollins says:

Yes, she’s still very young and has a lot to learn about life, but it seems like she’ being raised with a good head on her shoulders. She seems pretty aware of her position and good fortune, and hopefully she won’t wind up taking it for granted and sqaundering it. I guess time will tell and I wish her well.

  11. Cassie says:

I’m not going to be one more who look at her with pity and care.

Lily Rose wants fame and she is pursuing it with all her will.

I just check out her Instagram, this girl is worth of so much talk.

I can predict trouble with drugs in the future.

    • perplexed says:

She had some quotes from Bernie Sanders on her Instagram, which kind of surprised me.

    • Jegede says:

      @Cassie

      True.

She can avoid it easily if she chooses. Especially in France

      There’s no inevitability about it.

    • DaSH says:

This. Which made me laugh at that quote of her mother watching her daughter closely. This girl is 16 and she’s smoking pot and her squad looks like a try hard version of the virgin suicide.

      She’s a pretty girl though.

  12. M.A.F. says:

She may not have chosen the fame but she certainly is courting it. Which I can’t blame her for, if I was her age I may or may not be doing the same thing.

  13. perplexed says:

I think some of her features look like…Natalie Portman’s. At other times, she looks kind of like Lily Collins. Even if her connections give her a leg up, I think she fits the Hollywood convention of attractiveness. I have no idea if she’s talented, but looks-wise she doesn’t seem less attractive than other people in Hollywood (i.e Kristen Stewart, Jennifer Lawrence.)

  14. I Choose Me says:

Cute kid. Is all I got. That picture of her smiling really animates her face.

  15. TopCat says:

She reminds me of AnnaSophia Robb.

  16. Amy M. says:

She looks so much like her mom at that age, practically her spitting image. I think she’s even more striking than Vanessa.

  17. Unmade_bed says:

Was she Violet in Charlie and the CF?

  18. Liz says:

I’d never seen Vanessa’s pictures when she was younger. She was so gorgeous and sexy. Lily looks just like her. I would have expected someone with such great bone structure to have aged better. She looks so incredibly different now.

  19. @ says:

Vanessa’s milking her as much as she can. Vanessa knows she’s irrelevant now unless she’s with Lily-Rose
Lily used to attend a normal school when living in LA with her Dad, the same school her brother Jack still attends, but now she moved to Paris to work on a couple of movies so i don’t think she goes to school anymore

    • Liz says:

I don’t think Vanessa will ever be irrelevant in France. Maybe Americans don’t care about her but in France she’s still very famous.

I wish people would stop saying these kids lived with their dad. After their parents split they’ve lived primarily with their mom. Vanessa has even remained state side most of the time. Facts.

Johnny is the one who continues to work and travel all around while Vanessa just goes from LA to Paris. She’s not working because she’s taking care of her children.

I’m sure Vanessa has her faults but the facts are adding up, she’s the parent here, Johnny is MIA.

Heck, Jack is obviously staying with family or friends or nannies since both parents were in London and then Johnny didn’t even rush back… he’s in Arizona.

      • Jules says:

Facts are not adding up, you just want to believe that what you want to believe.

I’m pretty sure Johnny is not ‘MIA’ in his kids’ lives..

He was seen at their school in recent years. He was seen shopping with Lily for school at Target last year. And he did a movie with her this year.

The kids spend a lot of time with him.

  20. lucy2 says:

She’s one of the few kids I wouldn’t think had experienced the media circus. I never saw photos of the kids, and they mostly lived outside of Hollywood.
She definitely seems interested in the fame part of it now. Hope she has a good head on her shoulders, especially after all the family changes in recent years.

    • That’s what I was wondering–she didn’t grow up in the media circus at all. There was a brief period when her name was around because she got sick? I’m just remembering some tabloid, when I was younger, that I saw at the store, that said Johnny Depp’s daughter was dying or something.

      • Maria A. says:

While he was filming Sweeney Todd, she had to be hospitalized with a pretty bad viral infection. He spent his spare time at her bedside.

    • Liz says:

actually she’s been photographed a lot. I just don’t think it got as much mainstream coverage as say the Jolie-Pitt clan.

    • India Andrews says:

Depp hid Lily away in France. I always thought it was a good idea and compared Johnny’s behavior to the Jolie Pitts who pap walk their kids for cheap publicity a lot. At one point I even said Brad and Angie need to start paying their kids royalties they are the ones keeping their parents in the news. I never said that about Johnny.

  21. Megan says:

People are only interested in celebrity’s children if they’re attractive. Tom and Nicole’s adopted children are nothing special to look at, so nobody pays much attention to them. Lily-Rose has been primed for fame because it was clear from an early age that she was going to be a beauty. At least she acknowledges here that she hasn’t earned it. But having connections is how the ‘fame industry’ works.

  22. Tacos and TV says:

    Nepotism at it’s finest!

  23. kris_jenner_is_my_idol says:

Less attractive/striking version of Christina Ricci.

  24. Jules says:

    She’s stunning.

  25. Naddie says:

She’s half her mother, half her father. It’s interesting because most people always bend to one side. Apart from that, I don’t see anything unique or striking about her, just a pretty girl with expensive clothers and make up.

  26. India Andrews says:

They hid Lily in France. She didn’t grow up in the whirlwind like the Jolie Pitt kids who are paraded for the paparazzi.
