Duchess Kate’s jewelry & tiara choices were ‘tactful’, says jewelry expert

Here are some more photos of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge from this week’s big events for the Chinese state visit. Considering there was more than a month of build-up for their first-ever state dinner, I have to admit that the whole thing was sort of a let-down. Yes, Kate got to wear some fabulous royal jewelry. No, she didn’t embarrass herself by dropping a sausage curl in the soup. But it does seem like we’re still a long way from Will and Kate being considered diplomatic heavies. The best thing I can say about that is… there’s still time. People Magazine spoke to a royal-jewelry expert who claimed that Kate’s jewelry choices reflected the fact that she should not be considered a diplomatic heavy yet too, that Kate’s jewelry basically said “I don’t want to outshine the Queen.”

As for Kate, her decision to wear the Lotus Flower tiara, which she has worn in the past, was a deliberate one.

“This was not an occasion where Catherine should be the center of attention,” expert Leslie Field, author of The Queen’s Jewels, tells PEOPLE about the Egyptian-style tiara, which was also previously owned and worn by the Queen’s late sister, Princess Margaret. “If she had worn a tiara she had never worn before the press would all want to know about that. Her role is secondary – this is Her Majesty and the president of China at an extremely important state visit. It was tactful of everyone to not try and take the spotlight.”

[From People]

That’s certainly an interesting reading. It pre-supposes the idea that Kate made the decision as to which tiara she should wear though, and I’m not sure I believe that. I think for such a big evening, the Queen and the Buckingham Palace people likely dictated which pieces Kate should borrow and wear. This wasn’t some giggly charity appearance where Kate could flash everyone and there would be no repercussions. The Queen likely left nothing to chance and kept Will and Kate on a short leash as to what was expected from them.

As for Will and Kate’s appearance yesterday for the cultural exchange event, apparently the group got to see some advanced footage from POLDARK. Yes, the same Poldark that several of you are obsessed with. Apparently, Poldark is filmed in Cornwall and William talked about how windy it is there. They also checked out an Aston Martin DB10 that appears in Spectre.

I still say she needed a necklace to balance out the look.
Somehow, she looked like something was missing.

    • OverFirstAve says:

Kate wore what the Queen decided. I can’t read PEOPLE Magazine anymore. Just can’t. It’s just too much groveling all around and building up Kate no matter how lazy she’s been and celeb mouth pieces.

I truly doubt Kate had much choice in what she wore as far as jewels, I think the Queen decided what jewels Kate would wear.
The dress was Kate’s choice Yes,… but the jewels NO.

Also even Kate wearing her hair up, I’ll bet was gently Suggested to her, by someone. IMO

      • Basi says:

100% agree with you OVERFIRSTAVE on People mag assessment. It’s gotten so bad.

      • Jib says:

I feel the same way about gofugyourself. While they are great writers and observers about everything else, put a royal in front of them and they melt in a puddle of sycophancy. The commenters are just as worshipful. I just can’t.

      • FLORC says:

I have the image of a catalog of jewels given for choices to Kate and she could pick pieces that were pre arranged as sets. No mix/match.

And No hair down seems a mix between what is requested/expected and what Kate has often done with more serious events. Hair often goes up on her in these cases. Few times has it gone down and it’s not really repeated commonly.

      • Caroline says:

The Queen is not like that. She does not often – if ever – dictate what other royals do. She is non-confrontational. Also when Margaret Thatcher was PM she tried to co-ordinate her outfit at some important state event with that of the Queen. Her office phoned Buckingham Palace to try and find out what the Queen was wearing so Thatcher would not wear the same colour but she was told that “the Queen does not notice what anyone else is wearing”.

During one of the first State Openings of Parliament when Diana was PoW, she wore her hair up and took all the attention away from the Queen, her speech and everything. The Queen did nothing but Princess Margaret was livid at Diana and told the Queen, Diana was just making a fool of her. Diana’s staff had tried to put her off wearing her hair up at this event because they knew the fuss it would cause.

I actually think Kate is very thoughtful about what she wears to important events. A lot of care and thought went into the design of her wedding dress to be representative of Britain in much the same way as the Queen did with her own wedding dress and coronation gown. Poor Diana was a lot younger than Kate but her wedding dress had basically everything thrown at it. Huge skirt, huge train (the longest wedding dress train in royal history – 30 feet), frills, fancy sleeves.

I imagine Kate is given a small selection of acceptable tiaras from which to choose – probably by the Queen’s dresser. Maybe she was shown photos beforehand. I would not suppose BP would take dozens of tiaras out of their safes (or wherever they are kept) but limit it to two or three.

      • FLORC says:

        Caroline
Wasn’t Diana’s dress exactly as she wanted it? The giant Princess Gown?

      • Betti says:

@Caroline – Kate has no choice when it comes to Tiara’a she’s given what The Queen thinks is appropriate and is the same for all Royal women.

    • Merritt says:

The problem with a necklace is that the dress had crystals or sequins on the top that were more visible on video and probably in person. It would not have looked right.

      • Hudson Girl says:

The Queen wears diamond necklaces with crystal/ sequined dresses.
But, maybe Queen wasn’t in the mood to lend anything more ice out to Kate. I hadn’t thought of that.

      • FLORC says:

A necklace would have looked wrong imo. Unless it was extremely simple like a small strand of white gold and small diamonds. Anything else would have been a bad choice.

      • carolind says:

Betti – how do you know this about the tiaras? It doesnt make sense. How would the Queen know which tiara suited Kate? Also the Queen is not interested in this type of thing. If you have a definite source – fine – but if not much more likely the Queens dresser or similar organises small selection with Queens approval.

  2. Abbott says:

I too try to keep my tiara choices understated so as not to upstage my loved ones.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

That’s because you always think of others before yourself. Me, too. For example, at the last GoodNames weeny roast, I wore a simple tiara that I was certain several members of the press had seen before, to ensure that MaMa was not overshadowed in her new five tier piece..

      • Shambles says:

GoodNames weenie roast? I’ll be looking for my invitation in the mail, and I expect it to be made from the finest imported beige khaki, complete with your most impeccable calligraphy and a spritz of your signature scent, Eau De Fake Baby. I’ll leave my bejeweled crocs at home for the occasion so as to be tasteful and not upstage you.

      • Jaded says:

I can see it now GNAT – tiny bejeweled hotdogs – precious and utterly apropos.

    • Snazzy says:

Exactly. It’s all about manners and good taste when it comes to choosing the right tiara for every occasion

    • Sixer says:

I generally wear a bobble hat so that important people don’t notice that I washed my hair, then read my book and forgot to brush my wet hair before it dried into a bird’s nest. It seems like the right thing to do.

      • Crumpet says:

I do (however) fine that a nice understated tiara goes a long way toward distracting people from what my hair actually looks like (I do get such admiring looks when I wear it on the subway). I could lend you one the next time you find yourself crowned with a bird’s nest…

      • Sixer says:

I thank you! That would be lovely!

    • Sarah (another one) says:

      #PippaTips, Abbott? LOL!

  3. Betti says:

Unless the tiara is part of a private collection owned by said royal all other tiara’s are owned by HM and its HER that decides who wears what – Kate doesn’t have a choice. She’s given what TQ thinks is appropriate. I really wish press outlets would stop with the whole ‘Kate has more influence and access than anyone else because she’s such a special snowflake’.

In those photo’s you can tell she’s been practicing her ‘interested and engaged’ face – she’s all pursed lips, head cocked to one side and staring straight ahead.

    • BearcatLawyer says:

Aha! Thanks to you I now realize what has troubled me about her “engaged and interested” face! She’s cocking her head ALL WRONG and not opening her eyes nearly enough. I should know – I have 3 Cavalier King Charles Spaniels who have mastered the “Tell me more! I am just dying to know MORE! You are the most fascinating person ever!” face with cocked head. Perhaps I should ask Jason if he wants them to give her lessons.

      • Betti says:

haha – dogs are very good at that face. i love those dogs – they are just adorable.

      • C. C. Cedras says:

        ^^^^THAT’S IT!

I just got my first Cavalier King Charles puppy some weeks ago and when he cocks his wee head at me just so, I feel this pressure to be wise and witty. “Catherine” could do far worse than to adopt this expression.

      • BearcatLawyer says:

@C. C. Cedras – Congratulations on your new arrival. Your life will never be the same again now that you have a Cavalier! They don’t call them Velcro love sponge dogs for nothing. Then again, as my fellow Cavalier lovers like to say, Cavaliers are like potato chips – you cannot have just one. You should definitely try to join a Cavalier breed club near you; check the kennel club website in the country in which you reside for clubs. The Cavalier world is small (we all kind of know each other or know someone who knows someone) and close-knit but generally friendly. If you are on Facebook, there are several great Cavalier-oriented group pages chock full of useful information and terrific people. It does not sound like you live in Houston, but if you do you could join us for our club Fun Day in the Park on Halloween (see http://www.cavaliersofhouston.org for pictures – I am in the first photo under Brags with my latest show dog Tori).

      • Becks says:

I also have a King Charles cavalier 😍. Mine is a Blenheim girl. They are absolutely the most loving dogs. Great companion dogs with such a lovely temperament. And, they are the cutest things ever!

    • bluhare says:

After seeing Andrew with his head practically in his hands during the Mayor’s lunch yesterday, I’m not inclined to give Kate too much heat. At least she wasn’t doing something awful like that. He’s the Chinese head of state, so order an extra shot in the coffee, Andrew!

      • Citresse says:

When I first saw the photos, I thought they all had food poisoning.

      • belle de jour says:

I couldn’t believe that lapse of decorum or basic respect – even coming from him. For God’s sake, man, you could at least be plotting the details of your next shady shakedown… or imagining all the servants in their underwear.

        Lol @ Citresse:)

    • OverFirstAve says:

Exactly, it’s not Kate’s choice. The Queen gives Kate what she decides.

People Mag and the Daily Mail try to inflate Kate’s power, even to the point of now saying Kate and the Queen are kinda of best buds…. Wtf….I highly doubt it.

    • gayle2@gmail.com says:

What’s worse I wonder – being caught doing the bored eyeroll or if she burst out laughing at an inopportune moment….

  4. BearcatLawyer says:

Cultural exchange? Work? If you say so. It was essentially another fun entertainment-oriented event which happened to include the Chinese officials.

Poor sausages must be positively knackered by all these appearances. I bet they are counting the days until they are in Mustique!

    • notasugarhere says:

After all the rumors about November in Mustique, I wonder if they’ll go to The Seychelles or The Maldives instead to try to fool the press?

      • FLORC says:

        Nota
I’m wondering this too, but be certain there will be weeks on end of only vacation after getting so energised over mental health issues.
My guess is Kate will be on vacation, but William will come and go as he chooses and maybe Kate will visit him if requested.

  5. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Mmmm….I’m not sure I buy that Kate made the conscious decision not to outshine the Queen.

    • bluhare says:

      Yeah. Me either, GoodNames.

    • OverFirstAve says:

Kate wore what the Queen gave her. Kate has no choice in jewels, IMO it’s the Queen who decides which tiara Kate will wear.

    • FLORC says:

Makes me remember the time Kate walked infront of the queen. Although she did dress in the manner she’s suppose also. She imo is aware of how she is to act, but only does so when must or requested.

  6. Megan says:

She looks so old in that last picture. In terms of choices of outfits/tiaras/jewellery, Kate will be advised up to the eyeballs to ensure that she doesn’t make any faux pas. They wouldn’t leave it up to her to decide and then make a mistake at a State Banquet. She will have at least one etiquette assistant.

    • AtlLady says:

I think she looks like a worn out Elizabeth Hurley.

      • LAK says:

Elizabeth Hurley made herself over to appear very Posh. She would work that banquet like a pro if she were at the top table.

    • Pondering Thoughts says:

If they would leave it to Kate she would wear several tiaras to get the recognition she thinks she deserves.

    • Lauren II says:

Kate looks HARD in the face. Unhealthy.
Lovely Diana was bulimic for many years – she never looked this weathered.
Something is wrong. And I am not referring to Kate’s poofy squirrel hair.

      • FLORC says:

The women is Kate’s family do not age well. There’s also a decade difference between Diana and Kate at given stages. Dehydration, Smoking, sun, and genetics are factors here.

Also, Kate is more often seen as an improved image and not as she is. So when the same heavy handed edits are not made there’s a dramatic difference to what we see. Overnight she can appear young and vibrant or weary and haggard.

  7. Angie says:

People dissect her outdated fashion choices as if she were fighting global child poverty or something ground breaking. Her hair looks like something out of an 80s sitcom. Ugh

In other news, Prince Harry’s organization Sentebale is opening up several more centers for disabled, ill children in Lesotho. He also has the Invictus Games coming to the states in 2016… I wonder if these two will try to milk that for themselves?

    • gayle2@gmail.com says:

Angie, since she’s NOT out there fighting global child poverty or doing anything else that’s useful or meaningful, we got jack to talk about …. and since she’s featured on this site over and over again everytime she passes gas or sneezes, there’s not much else to talk about other than what we see her wear. 🙂

    • pleaseicu says:

“I wonder if these two will try to milk that for themselves?”

If Kate doesn’t William will. He does it every so often but then even that probably becomes too much effort for him so it drops off until it’s end of the year and he needs numbers. He tried to cipher off of Harry’s goodwill with the UK Invictus Games. He pops up unscheduled at Harry’s scheduled events for wounded vet charities and gets the credit in the court circular. There was a party last night for a charity that Harry’s done official work and unofficial private work with previously. William’s never done jack for it publicly or privately. Guess who was not only there but smack dab center in pictures from last night’s party?

      • FLORC says:

Harry has these items listed as personal time events more often than they should be. And has them planned out for months or a year in advance. His 1 year deadline for Invictus was stated and stuck to. William and sometimes Kate will add these on in the weeks or days before the event as seemingly last minute since all planning is taken care of and all there is to do is show up at that point.

  8. Amelia says:

Good Lord, that wiglet is verging on ridiculousness now.
    She looks like Lupo.

    • LAK says:

I’m rather enjoting the wiglet. It’s so glossy and bouncy. We are back to post wedding wiglety fullness. Long live the wiglet.

      • Amelia says:

Yes, but, when your hairstyle starts to resemble a spaniel, I think that’s an indicator to maybe reign it in a little bit.
One day Lupo’s going to look up and wonder; ‘Why is my mistress wearing my fur on her head?’

      • DodieTn says:

Wonder if the Wiglet has its own Twitter account.

      • FLORC says:

Lol! The glory Days! Long Live the Wiglet!

    • ArtHistorian says:

It’ll soon be a case of “The Hair that Ate the Duchess”!

    • belle de jour says:

I think we’ve found the perfect action character for Fergie’s next series of children’s books.

Now we just have to name the wiglet.

  9. LAK says:

As far as we know, the only personal jewelry belonging to Kate that is state banquet worthy is her wedding earrings.

Given that she has no other proper jewelry to wear on these occasions, she has to borrow from HM, BUT She doesn’t choose the jewelry. HM chooses what she thinks is appropriate. Not Kate

HM has given her only 2 tiaras to choose from. The other tiara is probably still with Cartier, therefore Kate could only wear this tiara.

    • L says:

Exactly. It’s up to the queen’s discretion. Sophie only has two tiaras (one of which she just got access to last year) and she’s working much more than Kate. Even Camilla rotates between only 3 and one of them is a family tiara (although Camilla is given more access to necklaces-but then again she’s married to the second in line)

There’s plenty of reasons to nitpick Kate-her tiara choices are out of her control and follow the prescident set up for the other royal wives.

      • notasugarhere says:

Sophie has shown up in a mystery tiara lately, which turns out the Queen wore in Canada decades ago. She has the horrible wedding tiara, the necklace tiara with one central aqua, and this new 5 aquamarine that looks like big flowers or bow. There was another small one in there, a button or small daisy tiara, but I think it was a loaner from a jeweler.

I’m curious about that necklace tiara, because I suspect it was a gift. I can’t find any info about where it came from, like if it is new or purchased at auction for her.

      • COSquared says:

What happened to the tiara Sophie received from the Bahrainis on a visit there? IIRC there was much hue & cry because of the treatment of political prisoners. The Five Aquamarine looks nice but basic. The best 1 she’s worn no doubt but it’s quite unfair that one of the hardest working royals has uses such a crappy set of tiaras.

      • notasugarhere says:

From what I remember, it was “suites” of jewels but no other details were given. It may have been a necklace, earrings, and brooch similar to what Camilla has received from the Saudis (the breastplate ruby necklace comes to mind).

      • aaa says:

I think that they get only one tiara from the royal collection but are allowed to switch. Camilla switched from the Delhi Durbar to the Greville, Sophie switched from her wedding tiara to the aquamarine, and Kate switched from the Halo Scroll to the Lotus Flower/Papyrus tiara

Any other tiaras are personal acquisitions, family tiaras or loans from jewelers.

      • COSquared says:

Sophie doesn’t “switch”. She still wears the Horrid Wedding Tiara(lastly June this year @ the Swedish royal wedding). The Five Aquamarine is still around(IIRC,last seen early 2014 at a banquet). With Kate the Halo is maybe at a Cartier exhibition so Lotus was the 1 HM picked for her. And in general, the era of commisioning tiaras & parures has come and gone so personal acquisitions of big pieces is quite rare.

      • LAK says:

Oops, i’ve just remembered…..she also has the ruby and diamond necklace/earrings last seen at the Military awards in 2011 (?), as well as the bracelet rumoured to have been gifted by Charles.

      • notasugarhere says:

LAK, the one that looks like it came from Claire’s? There are also the tanzanite earrings and pendant, rumored to be $40,000 give or take.

      • aaa says:

        @COSquared,
Sophie wore the single stone aquamarine tiara to Prince Carl Philip’s wedding.
        http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nF7mSTnsWc4/VX2LzfWW9tI/AAAAAAAAfy8/a2BhcfHSdxA/s400/_soph.jpg
        https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/5d/5e/22/5d5e220713c3c8680262adfce26cc35d.jpg

Sophie has worn two tiaras from the royal collection, her wedding tiara and the multi-stone aquamarine tiara. I won’t stake my life on it but I don’t think that she’s worn her wedding tiara after she debuted the multi-stone aquamarine tiara.

I don’t think that the Queen would lend out to an exhibition for years a tiara that was intended to be used by a member of the royal family .

Commissioning of new pieces or acquisition of existing pieces still happen, it may not be a common thing which is understandable when the royals have numerous tiaras in their vaults but it still happens. Off the top of my head I can think of tiaras worn by Charlene of Monaco, Sophie Wessex and Princess Sofia being acquisitions/commissions. If you want to go back a decade or more, there’s Crown Princess Mary of Denmark’s wedding tiara, and the fringe tiara Princess Madeleine of Sweden often wears was an acquisition/commission for her mother Queen Silvia, as if she didn’t have enough tiaras. 🙂

    • COSquared says:

Are there any people of sound royal knowledge at People? Good grief those “‘Princess’ Kate will get to choose her SB jewels” articles make my head ache. They manage to wow me every time with their Disney-princess sycophantic drivel. Anyhoo, I like the D&G dress but wish it wasn’t D&G.

      • ArtHistorian says:

This trend drives me bonkers as well – do these people have no professional pride, i.e. getting the facts straight? According to a commenter on another site, it was the same with articles about which tiara she would in the days leading up to the event – where the Spencer Tiara was included in the line-up. A tiara it is highly unlikely that Kate has access to since it is owned by the Spencer family and not the BRF. *sigh*

Though I love the colour, i don’t like the dress – mainly because of the lace overlay. Furthermore, I’m puzzled that she wore a cocktail dress to a daytime event. It makes her look really out of place.

      • Betti says:

^^ I think that’s exactly why she wore it – to stand out and get all the media attention.

      • COSquared says:

Good to see you again! Anyways, I think this is, imo her own mind, that this is a personal best effort. She’s probably mentally giving herself a pat on the back for a (EXHAUSTING!) job well done. Like at C’s christening, she seems to put herself in a “zone” where she has certain expressions fixed upon her face. Is it because HM’s around? Unfortunately, she still managed to look bored & uninterested AF at the SB.

      • FLORC says:

        AH
Simple answer.. No. If People Mag got the facts right on almost any story they’d be out of business. It’s to flatter in the most basic sense.

    • Tough Cookie says:

      ugh….this from People Style Watch:

“And the delicate tiara is a royal rewear! Royal fans first got a glimpse of Kate in the crown jewel at a white-tie reception in December 2013. And of course first wore the sparkling headpiece to her 2011 wedding to Prince William.”

Do they not check facts at ALL???

    • PHAKSI says:

HM isn’t a fashion person, even when she was young, so I sort of get why she’s so stingy with the jewels. She isn’t thinking about which tiara goes with which dress. Which begs the question why hasn’t Normal Bill commissioned a tiara or some other serious jewels for her, worthy of someone married to the heir. He can afford it and he’d probably get a massive discount anyway. The overpriced trinkets she wears now are ridiculous

      • Daisy says:

Normal Bill is legendarily stingy. Opening up his wallet enough to commission a tiara won’t happen.

      • PHAKSI says:

Daisy, this must piss her and Carol off so much. She waityed all those ears for a rich guy who turned out to be stingy

    • LizzyFizzy says:

I actually don’t think Kate is all that into jewelry, since most of her non-loaner jewelry is fairly simple and inconspicuous. Only the wedding earrings her parents bought really qualify as luxurious. She seems to be more interested in clothes than big jewelry.

I’ve seen some “buy these for yourself” links in magazines and (while they’re outside of my budget!) most of the bracelets and necklaces seem like they’re only expensive because they came from high-end shops, not because the materials cost is high. Her taste reminds me of those very delicate pieces that Elsa Peretti does for Tiffany’s–the cost is mostly in the name recognition and reputation, not in stones. It’s too bad she doesn’t pair her jewelry with sleeker suits and maybe a new haircut, because she would look so much more modern. I think her jewelry taste is the most youthful part of her whole look.

I imagine she doesn’t even really want a tiara, since she wears one so infrequently. If she really wanted one of her own, how could Charles deny William the money to commission it, when Charles buys or borrows quite a bit of jewelry for Camilla?

      • notasugarhere says:

She doesn’t wear a tiara frequently because she doesn’t attend tiara events frequently. If they hadn’t rudely ducked out of the Obama visit a couple years ago, this China visit wouldn’t have been her first state dinner.

Camilla’s jewelry isn’t borrowed from jewelers, but from the royal collections. She has received massive jewel gifts from the Saudis, just as Diana did. In this era, the BRF couldn’t just pop out and buy Middleton a new tiara. They’d be drawn and quartered. Felipe of Spain bought a 5 year anniversary tiara for his wife Letizia, which they hid from public view for another 5 years due to public sentiment.

Kate Middleton has an $80,000 ugly Cartier ring necklace that she wears as everyday jewelry. Her tiny charm necklace is $12,000. Her Kiki McDonough gemstone earrings are $3,000-4,000 per pair for off-the-rack and she has many pairs of them. She also has custom gemstone earrings from McDonough too.

She has a lot of jewelry that many people would consider expensive. She buys little pieces, like the charm necklace, but they are still significant cost.

      • LizzyFizzy says:

Notasugarhere, hasn’t Charles bought Camilla several expensive pieces related to/owned by her ancestor who was the Prince of Wales mistress recently? If he can do that without being drawn and quartered in public (both for the expense and the weirdness of celebrating the extramarital parallels), I find it difficult to imagine that Kate couldn’t finagle a new tiara if she really pushed for one. They’d just hide it or say it was a re-fitted royal necklace or whatever.

People keep talking about tiaras as if it would be a big PR issue or that William is too cheap and so on, but they are spending loads of money as is….just on other things. Houses, tennis courts, vacations, and as you said, the delicate, but not inexpensive designer jewelry, she prefers. And the backlash is fairly limited; most of the press is gushing towards them still.

I do think that something is up–someone mentioned how much better and livelier she looked back in Canada in 2011, so I looked up the photos. It is astounding how tired, unhappy, and drawn both of them look compared to just 4 years ago. They have plenty of help with the children, so what is it? Trouble in the marriage? Or some other misery? Even William’s aging has been drastic. It wouldn’t surprise anyone that a woman newly in the limelight gets too skinny (and then tired trying to maintain the skinny) because that’s sadly common…but what is up with him? Has he inherited Charles’ sadface or something?

It is just me or does she look remarkably like her first official portrait in that 3rd photo.

    • Tough Cookie says:

      YES!!!

    • kibbles says:

The official portrait looks exactly like her. It says a lot that so many people hated that portrait but this is what she looks like in the 3rd photo above.

    • Christin says:

That portrait was far more accurate than some of us realized at the time.

I recall a few comments mentioning that she really did look like the portrait. They must have been right.

  11. Citresse says:

Kate looked fine. The red dress and jewellery were appropriate. She doesn’t have the cachet of Diana but so few do. We shouldn’t be so hard on Kate.
And, Diana, IMO, didn’t always get it right. The dress she wore to the Opening of Parliament in 1984 looked like a nightgown with puffy sleeves. A pair of slippers and she was off to bed.

    • notasugarhere says:

Looking at Diana photos from the eighties, I’m reminded of how bad the fashion was. She was always put together, but some of the clothing was terrible. It was the era of Gunne Sax / Jessica McClintock gone wild. That particular gown was worn less than two months after Harry was born. Excuses the fullness of the gathers at the waist, but nothing excuses the Anne of Green Gables puffed sleeves and lace.

      • Christin says:

Those brands bring back memories! Yet that was the dressy look at the time (unfortunately) — billowy prints and bows.

      • Citresse says:

        notasugarhere and Christin
Even into 1989 the big bows stuck around. I remember wearing big bows with big collars in January 1989. And bows on shoes too. They were everywhere. The world was wrapped up with bows.

    • Deedee says:

I find it telling that Diana must be thrown under the bus for a fashion choice made during the 80s to try to make Kate look good.

      • Green Girl says:

IKR? There were so many bad styles in the 1980s. So many celebrities who were photographed at that time likely had more than a few outfits that were, shall we say, not good.

      • Caz says:

80s fashion, and most of what Diana wore, was awesome at the time 🙂 Diana was a fashion icon at the time. Kate will never be.

    • Pondering Thoughts says:

Kate has too many misses. And too many Marilyn moments. She isn’t in a nightclub any more.

  12. Artsygirl says:

She’s still young and yet looks so old! I can’t get over the drooping jowls..she also looks exhausted. So i’m kind of confused. I’m sure she has nannies to take care of the kids if she is tired and all..and after i saw the videos, she really looked like spmeone has put a gun to her head to attend these events..it’s painful to watch. And also, those jowls!

    • Rene says:

I know, she does look old, do they not want plastic surgery over in England? Not trying to be rude about England at all, I am sure there are a look of good Doctors, I do not know why she doesn’t nip off and get a mini lift.

I think it would do her the world of good. She looks spacey in some of the pictures too.

  13. Citresse says:

Kate wore purple or eggplant (as the designers prefer) with the Chinese yesterday. In China, purple signifies spiritual awareness and physical and mental healing. Note William wore a purple tie.

    • notasugarhere says:

She has at least four purple day dresses and a plum dress coat which she could have worn instead. IMO, that ugly Dolce was better suited to a Branson, Missouri cocktail hour. And wearing non-British is a no-no in her position.

  14. kri says:

Do you think she bejewels her nethers in case her skirt magically, accidentally flips up? Her jewels were lovely, tho

  15. antipodean says:

Lucky them to get a preview of Poldark. If you haven’t seen it Kaiser, you should check it out. Aidan Turner is suitably dark and brooding, the story is a classic, and the Cornish country side is splendid. I am sure you would become a fan. Eleanor Tomlinson is an excellent Demelza, although I think Angharad Rees had the edge on her in the part. They have called it the British Gone With the Wind.

  16. Jade says:

Don’t know about you guys but I get better (and often times accurate) information or facts about the royals and royal protocols from knowledgeable Celebitches than the tabloids or DailyMail.

  17. aaa says:

I think the most interesting thing was that Kate was not wearing an order but one of the bracelets she wore was Prince Philip’s wedding gift to Queen Elizabeth. I interpret that as the Queen must hold Kate on some esteem to let her wear that bracelet but Kate has not yet done enough to earn an order.

    • Feeshalori says:

I was thinking maybe HM was throwing Kate a bone since she didn’t give her an order, perhaps appeasing her with something bright and sparkly.

      • aaa says:

The queen probably has more bright and sparkly than anyone else in the world, she could have appeased Kate with something other than the bracelet that was a wedding gift from her husband.

  18. Jh says:

    Girl looks TIRED. Ooof.

  19. Pondering Thoughts says:

So when Kate wore a fireengine-red-dress-look-at-me then she didn’t steal attention?
Ridiculous. apparently the palace does preemptive damage control nowadays.
If Kate had wanted to go low-key then she would have toned it down. The Queens white dress was barely visible behind that white table cloth and all.

  20. PHAKSI says:

    meant to say piss off

  21. maggie says:

I think a necklace with long dangly earrings would have been overkill. She looks beautiful in both dresses but somewhat tired. These events must be so boring. Good on her for appearing engaged.

  22. RandomGirl says:

Hold up… What happened to that Prince Andrew scandal?

  23. seesittellsit says:

Ya know – she looks awful. I wonder if she’s had a bout with post-partum depression following the second baby? Her skin looks tired, and her eyes look like there’s nothing going on behind them, no smiles reach her eyes these days. She looked much better after the first baby. Something really is “off” with her these days. If it is post-partum depression I hope she has help, regardless of my not liking her, because post-partum depression is no joke, you wouldn’t wish it on your worst enemy.

    • racer says:

She looks really bad. The skin on her face appears to be sliding off and sagging like an 80 year old and her eyes are dead. I don’t think it’s PPD, she’s probably miserable and unhappy. She literally sold her soul for this lifestyle. All the money, titles and homes can’t compensate for the fact that she will spend her days controlled by the royal machine. Freedom and autonomy are priceless.

    • Robot Dog says:

You’re right, it is no joke, which is why it’s repulsive when people try to use it as yet another excuse why someone who’s barely worked in the past 13 years still isn’t working.

She looks pretty much the way she’s always looked. The press just isn’t bending over backwards to Photoshop her anymore.

  24. Saraphina says:

The basic problem has been identified: lack of charisma. No matter what she wears or what priceless jewels are donned on her, she will always be blah. I think everyone expected a Diana persona and that isn’t Kate. No personality to shine through. And that makes it unfair for us to expect something she simply isn’t capable of. I really would have thought Wills would have picked a more charismatic and dynamic wife. I think it speaks volumes as to his insecurities. And they dated for 10 years (I believe) and never did she say a word. NOTHING. Not that she was cautious but she simply has no personality aside from what she wants to do and so sad that it shows.
