Brad Pitt: Angelina Jolie & I are like Gena Rowlands & John Cassavetes

brad2

Brad Pitt’s Robert Redford Realness in these V Magazine photos is everything, right? Right. As I previewed yesterday, Brad covers the new issue of V Magazine. He’s promoting By the Sea, the film that Angelina Jolie wrote and directed. After I published yesterday’s story, V Magazine released some photos and two covers, so here you go. I never really hated Brad when he was going through his grey-beard phase, but once you see him clean-shaven again after all of these years, you do have to wonder why he hides his pretty behind the facial hair. When he was younger, he definitely had that “prettiness,” but now that he’s 51 (he’ll be 52 in December), his prettiness has turned into something hotter and more substantive. Just my opinion. Anyway, some additional quotes from the interview:

Filming ‘By the Sea’ after the wedding: “It was probably not the wisest way to spend a honeymoon. But then again, fighting to make something together… what better metaphor for marriage? It’s not a film that responds to the current zeitgeist or mode of storytelling – rather a quiet, mature look at the challenges of love and loss.”

BTS is not Mr. & Mrs. Smith: “Mr. & Mrs. Smith this is not. By the Sea deals with that period when the honeymoon is well over and the couple is faced with the banality of every day and the pains of the unplanned. There are no Hallmark cards that define the next chapter, or the value of a history together. So who are you?”

Working with Angelina’s script: “Naturally I didn’t want to fail Angie’s ideas, her words, but really I had absolute faith we’d figure it out.”

The Brangelina History: “For this one I operated on pure instinct. Angie and I have too much history and understanding of each other to question beyond there. At the end of the day, we get to be parents, greeting our lovely, crazy children and talking about their day, making sure they brush their teeth.”

Playing a drunk: “I play a good drunk because I’ve been a good drunk.”

Brad Pitt is Gena Rowlands: “The plan was to make something together with complete autonomy, in the footsteps of Gena [Rowlands] and John [Cassavetes] – and keep it a family affair. We, by our own admission, were overdue. I’m I’m going to work, I want to work with my wife.”

[From V Magazine]

Brad doesn’t actually say he’s Gena Rowlands, but John Cassavetes and Gena were together all those years, and Cassavetes would write and direct his lover. So, Angelina = Cassavetes. Brad = Gena Rowlands. In that particular comparison. As for everything else… I’m already starting to get drunk on the Brangelina stuff. My Brangelina Stan Badge was in desperate need of polishing!! I love them.

    He’s so beautiful…

    • Loopy says:

He now looks more like Robert Redford than Robert himself lol

      • DaSH says:

It’s scary how he look so much like Robert Redford. Is he sure Redford isn’t his father? Lol.

I can’t believe he’s going to be 52 in December?! He is so hot.

      • Lizzie McGuire says:

I always found him good looking but never in a “I want to slap his hideous beautiful face” way which is how I feel with Idris & Tom “the Bloke” Hardy. But now that he’s giving me Robert Redford vibes, he can join the club.

      • AngieVoight says:

Plastic surgery is a wonderful thing. Just ask Brad and Blind Gossip.

      • lola says:

@AngieVoight: I didn’t realize normal people actually took “blind gossip” seriously. WOW!

    • LadyMTL says:

ITA, and he’s getting more handsome with age (at least, in my opinion he is.) I hated that icky grey beard and to see him clean-shaven and channeling Redford…yum.

      • Kaye says:

Robert Redford is an absolute. Others may channel him or approach him on an attractiveness level, but no one can equal him.

And this is from a woman who is not particularly attracted to blond men.

    • GlimmerBunny says:

He is. Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden in “Fight Club” is still my idea of the perfect man, and he’s aging super well.

    • Mandy says:

Lots of Photoshop ! Good to know that 51 yr old are always photoshopped – man woman

      • Caro says:

Well, sorry to disappoint but I’ve seen Brad Pitt up close and in person within the last couple of years at an industry thing, and he looks just like this. HE’S a beautiful man and will probably be one (like Redford) for quite sometime.

I see his peers, even ones that are a good 5 years younger, like Affleck, looking bloaty faced and swollen, needing a man bra, or Leo D at 10 yrs younger…and I know the years will not be kind.

      • ninal says:

Seen him in person too, he’s probably had work done, but he still looks great when he’s clean shaven.

      • Lilacflowers says:

Saw him in person too and he is stunningly beautiful even with the beard. I wanted to bang him right on the sidewalk. The voice was surprisingly yummy too.

Saw Redford a year ago and he is still extraordinary looking for a man his age

      • Luca76 says:

I believe he’s a gorgeous man but he’s got wrinkles in real life and zero in these photos so there was something done to erase them. The results are divine though.

      • Goo says:

My first thought, Mandy…. The Photoshop on these photos are outrageous. Where are the lines that he has on his face. The crows feet around the eyes, which we all know he has? The deep embedded wrinkles on his forehead? Seriously! I like Pitt, but to present him as a thirty something, when he clearly is NOT, is absolutely ridiculous.

      • doofus says:

funny, when I saw these pics yesterday, I thought “why’d they use old pics of him for a current interview?”

he still looks like Brad Pitt, but a much younger one.

        looks good, though, for sure.

      • SusanneToo says:

I saw this cover as an attempt to emulate the glamour shots of the 30s/40s ala George Hurrell. Movie stars then were lit and made up to within an nth of their life and they looked like gods. V is a glamour mag that seems to me a cross between W and Interview. They weren’t going for Walker Evans style docu photos, but for the essence of Movie Star. They succeededIMO.

      • lola says:

@Caro: I have serious concerns for Affleck and his “moobs”. They are disgusting, his trainer needs to help him get rid of those things.

As for Brad, he’s a gorgeous man, always has been, always will be, and all the bitter betties in world know it. That’s why they try so desperately to knock him down, they feel as if they lost their Prince Charming when their “bitter queen” was dumped by the Prince.

      • boredblond says:

I thought so too, but I just read today’s Blind Gossip –ohh–now it makes sense–took at least ten years off

      • Mary-Alice says:

Agree with Caro, see him regularly at industry events. The man is just beautiful. I am not into blond men usually and even less so into typical male beauty but Brad just got begtter with the years and has a mature, rich handsomeness these days. Like good wine.

    • Maya says:

So beautiful that it hurts my eyes…

    • Franca says:

      Nobody’s like Robert Redford.
Brad looked better when he was younger, even though he didn’t do it for me then either.

    • Goats on the Roof says:

He’s looking much better here, but the attraction for me is gone. As he’s aging, he looks so much like my dad! And before the ‘Loonies jump all over me, that wasn’t a dig. I’m not saying he looks old or decrepit or ugly. The man physically resembles my dad!

      • hadlyB says:

Wow you have a hot dad!

      • Crumpet says:

        That’s funny Goats.

      • Scarlet Vixen says:

Lucky girl! What I wouldn’t give to had a dad look like Brad Pitt! My dad is the SPITTING image of Al Pacino in “Devil’s Advocate.” :-O

Brad has never been my #1 dong, but God was that man so damn beautiful in “Legends in the Fall” it makes my heart hurt.

      • Caro says:

        @HADLYB

        She really does!! +1

@GoatsOntheRoof Does your Dad model? Is your mom possessive? Do your friends like always wanna be over your house? Lol

      • Prim says:

Yeah, he looks like my dad too. It’s odd. My dad was beautiful in his day. I have b/g twins and they look quite like the Pitt-Jolie twins. Sadly I missed out on all that blonde gorgeousness myself.

      • MND says:

That’s interesting because people are constantly telling my girlfriend that she looks like Ange.

      • SNAP says:

@ GiatsontheRoof: Some girls have all the luck! …lol… My dad looks like the Credence vocalist, mustache and all…with a bunch of grays :-b

      • CL says:

Off topic, but I love your user name, Goats On The Roof! I just visited Goats On The Roof last weekend!

      • JenniferJustice says:

Damn! Your dad must be one good-looking older goat!

      • thelazylioness says:

        Where is your dad???

      • SusanneToo says:

I have a nephew who is a dead ringer for Brad. He’s 15 years younger than BP, so he really looks like these pics.

      • Herewego says:

Oh yes Legends of The Fall…..drool, drop, roll sigh ….
        Brad so damn fine ..oh…lordy

      • Saywhatwhen says:

Uhm, Goats, where does your papa live? I may just borrow him to read Brad’s lines from Legend to me…just for bed time story is what I am saying…nothing fishy, I promise. After all he is your papa and I wouldn’t want to hurt your feelings…

      • @SusanToo
How old is your nephew? Lol.

Although, someone from CB better let me know when they have a dead ringer for Liam!

      • SusanneToo says:

@VC. I misspoke a bit earlier(shouldn’t do math in my head). My nephew is almost exactly 6 years younger, not 15. He’ll be 46 next week. My sister had his high school pic on her desk and people would say “How do you know Brad Pitt?”

    • Miss V says:

He really is so handsome. He’s aging beautifully, and so is his wife!

    • Nicolette says:

He is looking mighty fine these days.

    • MsGoblin says:

      DAYUM!

Brad Pitt is the only celebrity who has appeared in my dreams. And we’re always doing something terribly mundane. What a waste of dream time.

      • thelazylioness says:

That’s funny. If I’m positive I’m dreaming I will start acting slutty with whoever I’m in the dream with but I usually wake up before anything happens.

    • lisa2 says:

I think he is a gorgeous man.

I don’t see that the pics are really photoshopped more I think the type of film that is used is more grainy. I could see Brad’s hand in the type of film used. Trying to keep it all relevant to the era.

      HE IS HOT TO ME

    • Caro says:

Oh! ((THUD!!)) the profile one of Brad in the shades. Pretty heart stopping. Jeebus. I bet Redford feels like he has a son. Lmao

    • Suzanne says:

And so full of himself. He does look cleaner without all that scraggly greasy hair. Both of them always look to me like they need a shower and shampoo.

      • doofus says:

“both of them” who? Pitt and Jolie?

I’ll give you Pitt as he’s sometimes been pictured looking less than “fresh as a daisy” but I’ve never seen Jolie look like she “needs a shower and shampoo”. even when she’s dressed casually, she looks clean.

      • That’s because her skin glows. She is amazingly photogenic. I remember last year? There were pics of her in the middle of the night, coming off a plane into LA (I think)….it was dark, her hair was down, and she looked really tired and barefaced….but she glowed. That is just not fair AT ALL.

But lol, the only person to me who looks like she pulled all her clothes off the floor and washed up in a bathroom sink is Amy Pascal. Brad reminds me of my dad. He thinks he’s fashionable (lol)….and sometimes that fashion lends him some….interesting looks. He used to wear only white turtlenecks and jeans (like every day for YEARS)…..and Lord help him when he tried to dress up for work. Beige beige beige. Like what Brad wore at the AFIs last year…..my dad would’ve been allll over that.

      • doofus says:

I know VC…I’ve said it before…it’s like her skin actually emanates light.

      • LizzyFizzy says:

I remember a few older articles about Jolie’s skincare routine that mention one specific skin product–I think her glow really comes from using this moisturizer loyally, since she was this same degree of “glowy” years ago. It might’ve been Shiseido, since she advertised for them overseas? I can’t find it now, since there’s a dermatologist claiming his “$800 Triad facials” are her secret, lol! I just think she’s not afraid of being shiny, so she wears this skin cream 24/7 and doesn’t usually have her makeup artist layer lots of powder over that to matte-ify it, like they usually do for the red carpet. The articles I read implied it was her favorite moisturizer. Having a glow is her go-to, just like Kate Middleton likes her eyeliner or Dita von Teese goes for matte.

    • Fallon says:

He’s becoming more and more attractive with age, and the love he so openly displays for his wife and children makes him even hotter!

    • Herewego says:

Yes Brad is gorgeous. I was and am also a Robert Redford fan.
I have The Way We Were on a VHS Loop lol love him. 🙂

      • lola says:

RR in TWWW, no one but Brad could equal that beauty. Babs pushing RR’s hair out of his eyes. Swoon.

    • I Choose Me says:

That second picture is everything. Age has given his face more character and he seems so secure in his skin now. First time I’ve ever thought he was actually hot.

    • Ravensdaughter says:

Yum! Definitely like the clean shaven look!

    • (Original, not CDAN) Violet says:

He really is. Especially when he shaves, so we can see his gorgeous face.

    • Marlin says:

Thats funny, he has always pinged my gaydar. Brad does nothing for me. Too much of a pretty boy and i dont really care for him in real life. (I know i dont personally know him but you get what i mean).

  2. Lilacflowers says:

Brad seems to be channeling Three Days of the Condor era Robert Redford in these pictures.

    • Sullivan says:

Yes! Perfect description, Lilacflowers. I just happened to watch that movie a couple weeks ago. They both do the shaggy 70’s look quite well.

      • Tiffany says:

I could see that, but also All The President’s Men with a dash of Jeremiah Johnson ( Brad has not quite perfected the beard). I really thought Redford looked great in those films.

      • Lilacflowers says:

@Tiffany, every time I see the trailer for The Revenant, I start singing “Jeremiah Johnson made his way into the mountains”

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

And I’m thankful for it. Very.

    • Lilacflowers says:

Especially the pictures with the shades. Sideburned, sunglass wearing 70s Redford was a thing of beauty.

    • SusanneToo says:

When Redford directed Brad in A River Runs Through It(92) everyone commented on their resemblance. It’s even more pronounced now. And that’s a good thing IMO.

      • Caro says:

Yea, Redford really loves Brad. He’s always said some wonderful things about him, speaks of him like he is his Dad.

    • V4Real says:

Brad is a very handsome man . I see a slight bit of Redford but I never found Redford that attractive.

I actually like these pics a lot. They seem very cool and youthful.

    • belle de jour says:

My favorite shameless drool movie. That Redford could come hide out in my apartment any day – I don’t care who’s after him.

      • herewego says:

Now I’m going to have to put my VHS cord back on the tv and watch The Way We Were tonight and fall asleep to Redford’s face.

I am another person who saw Brad Pitt in person during the Anniston years. He came to a tv production set w JenA to visit her dad. Brad is GORGEOUS in person and he was very nice too. All those screaming photoshop need to get a grip, the man has ALWAYS been gorgeous.
I could care less about the accusations of photoshop, Brad is still a GORGEOUS man, period. He is ageing well and has always taken care of his body.
He also is madly in love with the LOVE OF HIS LIFE, Angelina. He is one happy man, it’s so obvious.

  3. astrid says:

My badge is polished too! Wow is he hot in these pictures. I really like these two together. Team Brangelonie!

  4. Luca76 says:

Love it brangeloonie squee! The pictures are great photoshopped to high heaven of course but it’s great to see him as Redford.

  5. lower-case deb says:

is that tattoo A | MPZSVK an erasable scoreboard for when they play scrabble? or boardgames/sports/whatever.

Team Parents/Team Ange and Team Kids.
and they write down their scores on daddy’s arm and then mommy will wipe it all up later when the kids are all asleep.

i like the idea of dad as a walking score pad.

  6. Darkladi says:

Brad can get it from me forever

  7. Catelina says:

Yes, love them! Love how much respect they show eachother (at least in public).

  8. truthSF says:

Uh, which Cassavete directed Gena Rowland in The Notebook, the father or the son?

  9. Ally8 says:

Ugh. You, sir, are no (golden era 1970s) Robert Redford.

    • Franca says:

      Yeah, not even close.

    • SamiHami says:

No, he’s far superior. Much better looking and without question far and away more talented that RR ever dreamed of being.

      • hmmm says:

I wish I knew how to do a bug-eyed emoticon.

      • trilby227 says:

There is no way that Brad Pitt is more talented or more accomplished than Redford. Or better looking, for that matter.

      • Caro says:

        Agreed @SAMIHAMI +1

People forget for a long time Redford was considered just a pretty boy, with a lot of detractors re his acting – I mean way into his 40s and early 50s, he had naysayers…also he was forever upstaged by his co-stars, Hoffman, Newman, Streisand. it wasn’t until he moved into directing, I.e. ‘ordinary people,’ that people thought Oscar would be realized.

Brad was being nominated for Oscars before he hit 30.

Redford could never deliver a 12 Monkeys, Fight Club, Seven or Snatch level of acting, at a comparable age or even beyond…like ever. Lol

People’s bitter gets in the way of like reality. Lol

      • Carol says:

Robert Redford is the standard. All others are pale copies at best.

      • trilby227 says:

Has Brad Pitt ever directed a film that won an Oscar? No. Did Brad Pitt start something like The Sundance Institute that promotes and supports independent films and filmmakers worldwide, and has it’s own prestigious film festival? No. There is no comparison.

      • Caro says:

        @trilby

Hi, uh, Brad hasn’t expressed a desire to direct.

Brad has produced Oscar winning films, The Departed and 12 Years a Slave. So there’s that.

Brad isn’t the founder of a film festival (give him time) however, he is the founder of something equally if not more important, award winning ‘Make It Right,’ foundation and helping to rebuild the Lower 9th.

That said, I go back to my main point. When Redford was Brad’s age, he was still trying to break out of the box H’wood had put him in acting wise, and he wasn’t all that successful. Much like Clint Eastwood who’s acting skills we’re sub-par, Redford would sometimes get the same kind of side-eye. It didn’t help he came along when the Pacinos, Hoffman’s, and DeNiros (Strasberg students) were taking over.

Like I said, Brad was seen and recognized for chops as a very young man.

        It’s just a fact.

      • doofus says:

by the time Redford was Pitt’s age, he had already done Barefoot in the Park, Butch Cassidy, The Way We Were, The Sting, The Great Gatsby, Three Days of the Condor, All the President’s Men and The Natural.

what “box” do you think Hollywood had put him in, acting wise?

      • lola says:

Unfortunately for Redford, he didn’t age as well as Brad has. Also, RR never had a really great body, and Brad has always had a great body.

RR found his nook more as a Director, Brad is a better actor than RR, and a great Producer. The naysayers are upset, as everyone knew they would be, and since it’s only a week away from the premiere of Brad and Angie’s film, they’re panicking.

It’s going to be a joy to watch them sink deeper into hysteria.

      • doofus says:

Redford is almost 80. Pitt is 50+. you can’t compare how well people who are 30 years apart in age have aged. wait until Pitt is almost 80, then you’d have a comparison.

or, look at pictures of Redford when he did Out of Africa (he was just under 50 then) as a comparison as to how they’ve aged. he looks pretty damn good to me. in fact, he looks a LOT like Pitt does now.

as for him never really having a great body, google “Robert Redford shirtless” and get back to me.

      • Caro says:

        @doo

      • Caro says:

        @doofus,

Not here to disparage Redford’s illustrious career. The point, is that someone maintaining that Brad is known as far and away a better actor than Redford was back in the day at the same juncture, is not exactly a news bulletin.

There’s no dispute Redford is an icon, and has been in iconic films and done great work.

But the facts are, with regards to ACTING: he had received 1 Oscar nom by the time he reached middle age, to Brad’s 3, and I’m sure Brad isn’t done yet.

Personally, I can imagine Brad playing most of Redford’s roles with aplomb, but I cannot imagine Redford doing likewise with Brad’s. That doesn’t mean Redford sucked, PLEASE..he’s amazing, I just think Brad’s more of an actor, in that he embodies characters (a character actor) better. Redford brought a kind of Stoic, classic leading man wry sensibility to his parts.

      • Hannah says:

        Disagree @ caro
Brad is much better when he doesn’t have to play the straight male lead. He seems to be more comfortable if he gets to put on an accent a moustache or some sort of character device. Redford is comfortable playing straight up male lead. He’s much better at it.

    • Carol says:

I just don’t get Brad Pitt. I don’t find him at all interesting. I think he is ok looking, quite boring actually, and he can barely speak. I do believe he is a good actor though.

  10. MrsBPitt says:

I was just thinking of the pictures of Jennifer Anniston (I know, I know, don’t yell at me for bringing up JA), when she did the photo shoot, made up as Barbra Streisand. And here is Brad (my handsome baby) made up as Robert Redford….do I see a “The Way We Were” remake in the works…..lol….just kidding, but a funny thought!

    • Luca76 says:

Directed by Angelina of course (I kid,I kid)😂

    • Maya says:

Oh no you just gave the hens a silver lining😂

    • Caro says:

      @MRSBPITT

THAT’S hilarious. Redford/Streisand I think that summed up what people thought of their relationship, that Pitt was too beautiful for her.

If Aniston wasn’t so embarrassed at the fact she resembles Streisand.

By the way that pictorial she did was an apology of sorts because this video came out: http://youtu.be/yh0tEP70VmQ – start from 2:15…she’s clearly horrified at being told she reminds the interviewer of Streisand. I thought her reaction was abhorrent and just…rude. It’s one more of the reasons I don’t like her to this day.

The reality is, Streisand’s face is infinitely more attractive than Aniston’s, IMO. Streisand’s eyes we’re glorious, and her profile majestic. Those old album covers with her updos? ‘GORGEOUS!’

      • Katherine says:

Caro, thanks for that interview. She is just weird throughout it. And i can’t tell if she’s just insecure or dismissive of the reporter. Not sure what accent she was channeling but it seemed affected. When asked if there were any actresses whose work she’d like to emulate she names Diane Keaton and Mary Tyler Moore. And, yea, when he mentions Streisand she does her very own version of a spit take. She tries to recover, way too late in my opinion, but it was clear she was more focused on the cute female comic actors and the mention of Streisand really seemed to burst her bubble.

Barbra earned my respect long ago for her refusal to fit someone else’s vision of how she should look. No nose job for her.

      • Caro says:

        @KATHERINE +1

Yes, that’s it exactly – a “Spittake,” is a perfect description, as was her “late recovery.” ..and talk about subconscious clues, her covering her *nose* She has major issues. I’ve just always found her phoney, and that clip is the main reason.

Streisand threw very subtle but obvious shade at her spread as I recall.

      • WinnieCoopersMom says:

Katherine – Interesting that JA mentioned MTM and Keaton…does Aniston consider herself to be funny/quirky? Bc no one else does. Her doing Rachel, while successful (obviously), came across as ditzy/princess-y/drama queen and I feel like all her following rom-com roles follow that persona, bc she really doesn’t have a comedic range.

      • LizzyFizzy says:

I really think Streisand has/had a unique look. A book I have on beauty talks about her “making up her sloe eyes like Cleopatra,” which she did–and I’m not sure if that was before or after the Taylor film. She’s a primary example of someone who knew that it’s more daring to embrace and play-up your unusual looks than to have surgery to be a cookie-cutter girl with a button nose.

  11. Toot says:

    Brad looks hot.

Sweet that he compared what Angelina and him were trying to do as what John and Gina did, especially since they’re friends of Gina. She even mentioned them in her recent Elle interview.

  12. Talie says:

It’s very Downhill Racer, this shoot. He’s aging better than Redford.

    • Esmom says:

Agreed…Brad’s definitely aging better than Redford. That cover in the white shirt, swoon.

      • Hannah says:

Oh come on. Redford will be 80 years old soon. He’s ageing fine. What is an 80 year old supposed to look like? I googled it and when Redford was brads age ( 50) he looked just as good. This shot is heavily photo shopped too.

      • Esmom says:

I’m not comparing a 50-year-old and an 80-year old. What I meant was that I think Pitt looks better than Redford did at that age. I actually thought Redford looked rough for a while and then he clearly got some work done that helped a bit although it was sort of obvious. Less obvious now.

      • Hannah says:

You can look at pictures of Redford ca mid 80s on google he would have been brads age back then and he was ageing pretty much like Brad.. Brads a handsome man but this photo is photoshopped to high heavens.

      • Esmom says:

Ok, you win. I was just making an idle observation, but if you say Pitt and Redford are aging identically well then so be it.

  13. tracking says:

The cover pic pose is very awkward imo but the inside pics are nice.

  14. Nev says:

    Daddy. YUM.

  15. smcollins says:

If there was ever anyone who embodies the classic “ages like a fine wine” it’s Mr. Pitt. He just keeps getting better, and better, and better…Angelina is one lucky, lucky woman!

  16. Wentworth says:

Robert didn’t age well imo. His skin looks paper thin.

    • doofus says:

I think Redford spent too much time in the sun out on his ranch so his skin looks “craggy”, if you dig.

    • hadlyB says:

He was gorgeous back in the day. I watched Butch Cassidy the other day and wow, he was beautiful.

He didn’t age well at all and I wonder why. Bad choices? Bad plastic surgery?

      • Jaded says:

Yup….he had his eyes done years ago and it just destroyed all the hotness. Plus his skin looks like it’s eroding from massive sun damage.

      • Alice too says:

30 years ago, there was also no Botox, no laser resurfacing, no fillers, no Retin-A etc. It was surgery or nothing basically. Redford may have had his eyes done, but he doesn’t appear to have had a facelift. I think he’s pretty much aging normally, we’re just not used to seeing movie stars do that very often.

These days, it’s a lot easier to slow the effects of age on your face before they get to the stage where it’s facelift or nothing. Redford is well past the point where any of the non-surgical options are going to do him any good. Clearly he probably doesn’t care all that much, or he’d have given Jane Fonda a call and gotten the name of whoever it is that she uses.

    • lucy2 says:

I met him a while back (10 years?) and he still looked really good. But he did get work done around the eyes and it was kind of obvious.

I don’t know if anyone compares to him and Newman in their heyday.

      • SusanneToo says:

        Newman in The Hustler. Aaaaaaaaaaaah!!!

      • lucy2–I watched Cat on a Hot Tin Roof I don’t know HOW many times because of Newman. Just beautiful beautiful beautiful.

      • mayamae says:

@Virgilia, I did not understand the appeal of Paul Newman until I saw Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The scene at the end when he tells her to lock the bedroom door …….

      • @mayamae
YES. So hot! So hot. And when he threw the pillow on the bed…..omfg. I died. I seriously watched that movie almost every day for two weeks straight.

      • Marny says:

Paul Newman is my gold standard forever and always..!

      • Lisa says:

I’m going to be honest: I’m generally more attracted to women than men. But Paul Newman was so fucking hot. When he started going a little gray in the early 70s… That’s the Newman who could give me all the O’s he wanted.

      • Caro says:

If anyone hasn’t already, do rent/stream Paul Newman in HUD. WOW!

  17. Armenthrowup says:

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH NO. You are not, Brad Pitt, neither of you could hold a candle to John and Gina. DELUDED.

    • Teri says:

Seriously!! But every once a while its good to practice rolling your eyes!

    • Caro says:

      @Armenthrowup @Teri

Hi Armen, FYI: it’s “Gena,” not “Gina.” 😉

Actually, I think Gena would be just fine with Angelina holding her candle, seeing as they’re good friends, have worked together and Gena honored Angelina and revered her at AMPAS giving her, her Herscholt Oscar year before last. She thinks the world of her, her talent and as a person – she’s said so.

I think John, rest his soul would also like the Brad Pitt comparisons. Brad’s resume and filmography is every bit as impressive and he’s only 50.

Both Brad and Angelina are Oscar winners and nominees from a young age.

John and Gena didn’t come into their own until they we’re older, and sadly they never won Oscar, though they deserved to.

    • lola says:

If you can’t spell Gena’s name correctly, you have clearly never seen her films.

  18. Maya says:

Mamma Mia – Adonis alert. Brad is one of the most beautiful men in the world and naturally so with a head full of hair…

Gina is a close friend of Angelina & Brad so I am sure she is happy with them trying to recreate their award winning partnership.

Gotta love how Brad and Angelina don’t have to go on tv show after tv show to promote their movies – one interview each and the interest from the media and public has hit the roof. The power of Brangelina…

PS: one more week and By the Sea will open the prestigious AFI.

  19. lisa2 says:

I just love them as a couple.. I do..

I like this shoot.. I appreciate how he is really thoughtful about how his photoshoots stick to the them of the movie. The film is inspired by the 70’s so he did that.. and Redford was so Big in the 70’s..not to mention for years people have said how much they look alike.

Regarding Gena and John.. I know Angie and Brad are very close to her. She said in her recent interview that they had dinner together.

I’m will let my LOONIE FLAG WAVY HIGH AND PROUD FOREVER.

    • Goo says:

They had “dinner” together, so that makes them very close? Please….

      • lisa2 says:

NO it makes them close because THEY SAID THEY ARE

        happy now???

      • Goo says:

Oh, for the love of …. You are really stretching it. Bless your heart. If the said it, it HAS to be the TRUTH. Ha!

      • Maya says:

@Lisa: just ignore these hens – they always claim the Brangelina don’t have any close friends and are always proven wrong.

These people themselves say that they are close friends but haters ignore that part. For haters – you are only friends if you go on holidays together or namedrop each other constantly for publicity.

      • Paige says:

Angelina has it and Gena has said it. They have spoken about each other several times over the years. I guess both women are lying. Who would lie about something so simple?

  20. Marny says:

His styling might look like Robert Redford but I don’t actually think his face looks like RR. Truthfully, I think that hair looks pretty ridiculous on him.

    • Esmom says:

I agree that he doesn’t look all that much like RR but I could see why people first made the comparison back in the day based simply on them both being blond with charming grins.

    • Caro says:

‘That hair?’ We’ve seen that hair on Brad many a time. That was his exact hair in ‘Moneyball.’ Don’t recall anyone saying it looked ridiculous then, just remembered the film and his performance scoring big with critics and the box office.

    • V4Real says:

@Marny I see a very slight resemblance to Redford but no, Brad does not look like him. IMO Brad looks much better. I never found Redford attractive. I like these pics though and yes I know photoshop played a role in this. This is Brad’s boy band hair.

      • Alice too says:

To each their own, but in my eyes, there is no comparison. Hands down Redford.

        http://www.thegossipers.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/robert-brad.jpg

      • doofus says:

I like that they didn’t go overboard with the photoshop. as I said above, he still looks like Brad Pitt, just a much younger one.

I HATE IT when a mag photoshops an image so that the person in the image slightly resembles the person who it’s a picture of. so many times I’m looking at a cover and I think “that model sort of looks like Reese WItherspoon” or something and then I realize that it IS Witherspoon, with a LOT of photoshop. it’s like they change the structure of the person’s face!

        lol at “boy band hair”…

      • Marny says:

I also think Redford is sexier. Yes, this is boy band hair- a feathered shag!! I think he looks better with short hair. This looks like a wig to me (I’m not saying it is a wig but it just looks like one).

  21. Alice too says:

I find it mildly disturbing that he’s a) channeling Robert Redford in these photos and b) comparing he and his wife to Cassavetes and Rowland. Is it just me, or does it somehow feel wrong for these two, who are supposed to be a Hollywood Power couple, to be “trying” in some way to be “like” anyone but themselves? I’m finding this strange and have a tendancy to think that when you try and be “like” someone else, you usually end up being a pale imitation rather than surpassing the original. It’s like being a Tribute Band…

    • mer1 says:

tribute bands can be fun but they are nowhere near like the original and that is part of the point. Yeah, I dont know. It does seem odd the comparison and I always think it is a bit odd when stars * dress up * as someone else. But the posters for the film really made me feel like they were sort of losing it (Maybe it was over at Lainey Gossip?). The way the names are, so LARGE, the way the last names are in capital letters and it makes it as if her directing it is the whole point – which I guess it is but it could have been done in a more subtle way and yet still effective, less obnoxious.

      • DianaM. says:

What? Their names on the poster are obnoxious? I mean… We are grasping at straws now…:/

      • @DianaM.
I went and looked at the posters again, in case I needed my eyes checked. Grasping at straws indeed. The text isn’t even bigger than the text for the title, so wtf?

    • FingerBinger says:

@Alice too I doubt by the sea will be another woman under the influence. As for channeling Redford ,Pitt has always looked like him.

      • Alice too says:

It’s clear that these photos are a deliberate attempt to make him look as much like Redford as possible.

        Here: https://cinematicpassions.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/robert-redford-sunglasses.jpg

The hairstyle, the sideburns, the glasses…copied.

I’m going to keep it in the realm of music to make my point, but the principle holds true for directors as well. The legends, people like Bowie, Tina Turner, Sting or more recently Adele, they sound like no one else. The minute you hear their voices, you know exactly who that is. Trying to become famous because “you sound like…” generally doesn’t work.

For anyone who is a fan of certain directors, it’s the same thing. They could put no credits at all up, but you’d still know who directed it because their personal style is like no one else’s.

Which is the gist of my comment. I don’t understand why they would put themselves in this position. It seems to me to be the sort of strategy that is guaranteed to make them end up looking “not as good as”.

      • @Alice
I’m honestly not understanding. It’s a photoshoot. Themed in the seventies. Brad has always reminded people of Redford. So it’s a nod to him.

Unless you’re saying that their film is completely copying a plot to one of Redford’s or Cassavete’s films….I don’t understand what your issue is with it, beyond you just not liking the aesthetics.

Also–there is nothing new under the sun.

    • Luca76 says:

He was hand picked by Redford himself to play his surrogate of sorts in A River Runs through It and the comparison has always stuck so I think being disturbed is a bit of an extreme reaction.Anyway he probably didn’t actually pick the subject of the photos, probably it was the editorial team at the magazine as well as the photographer.
As for what he actually said as opposed to the extreme header following in the footsteps and being inspired by is not the same as actually saying all Kanye I’m the best thing since Steve Jobs etc.
He’s actually friendly with Gena Rowland’s and they chose to emulate them as opposed to doing another blockbuster type movie no biggie.

      • Alice too says:

        You’re missing my point completely.

They’ve set themselves up to being compared, both by the pictures and the Cassavetes/Rowlands comment. A Hollywood power couple should not be putting themselves in that position. THEY should be the ones everyone else wants to emulate, not emulating someone else or implying it. That’s the sort of thing that wannabe’s do, not established heavy hitters.

It’s also kind of funny that you think he had no control over the photo shoot/promotion for a film he is in, co-produced etc. This is Brad Pitt we’re talking about, not some D-lister.

      • Luca76 says:

I didn’t say no control but I doubt he dictated the theme and setting.

      • V4Real says:

        “You’re missing my point completely.”
“They’ve set themselves up to being compared, both by the pictures and the Cassavetes/Rowlands comment.”

Well you’re right because we are doing it on this post.

      • I don’t get what you mean by pictures. The theme is the 70s/Robert Redford (IDK, only saw RR in “Indecent Proposal”, so I’ll have to take everyone else’s word for it) because “By the Sea” is set in the seventies. What does that have to do with Cassavetes/Rowlands…..

By the comment….he said they want to be LIKE Cassavetes/Rowlands, in terms of working together. It is the writer of the post that said that BRAD said that they WERE like Cassavetes/Rowlands. And yea, as this post is an example of, their quotes will get twisted around. That’s what happens on the internet. The HFPA member on twitter compared Angelina to Sophia Loren, and that got a bit of a “blowback”, with a few saying she wasn’t like Sophia at all. Well, Angelina didn’t say it. Brad didn’t say it.

I guess I don’t see the big deal. I think he mentioned Cassavetes/Rowland because they are friends with Gena–Gena has worked with Angelina two or three times, and she presented Angelina with her honorary Oscar. I’m assuming they’re friends. Obviously they admire her and her husband.

      • Paige says:

        @VC
I agree with your entire comment. He said they would like to be like Gena and John, meaning a couple that worked together in cinema like John and Gena. It sounds more like admiring them instead of being wannabes. He didn’t say, “Angie and I are like Gena and John” The headline is sending people off and people are just complaining without reading the interview. They just want to be negative and compare Brad and Angelina to Gena and John. It’s great that they admire them. Gena and Angelina are good friends.

      • Alice too says:

@ Paige: “The headline is sending people off and people are just complaining without reading the interview”. Exactly my point. Now, expand the same thing to the general public, the critics etc once the film comes out. Because most of them only read the headlines too and that’s all they’re going to remember.

Next, read through the comments regarding Pitt vs Redford here. Even though the CB environment tends to be very pro-Brangelina, there are far more comments that seem to indicate Redford>Pitt. Once again, expand it to the general public and film critics etc.

My comment was not a “complaint”. Rather it was “I wish they hadn’t done that”, I think it was a mistake. I may very well be wrong, but people do tend to be kind of predictable.

    • Katherine says:

I think people are missing the point. The entire point of the photoshoot was to channel the 1970s since that’s the time era of their new movie.

So the hair, the clothes are all about the 70s. It IS a tribute to the 70s style. Since Brad has always looked like Redford and Redford was one of the male icons of the 70s, well, there you go. This is done frequently in photoshoots. Seriously someone finds it “disturbing”?

      • Luca76 says:

        Thank you!!!

      • Alice too says:

        I said “mildly disturbing”.

Megan Fox trying to imitate AJ didn’t bother me, she’s a wannabe C-lister. Wannabe’s do that because it’s one of the ways they use to get noticed. That and name-dropping.

These two don’t need that. It bothers me to see that for some reason, they (or at least he) seems to feel it’s necessary or somehow a good strategy. They have enough star power on their own to not have to resort to this sort of thing and I think it will end up backfiring on them. Let’s face it… at this point in her directing career, AJ is not going to be anywhere near the level of Cassavetes. And now, that’s who she’s going to end up being compared to by the press rightly or wrongly, thanks to the comment he made in this interview.

      • Katherine says:

Alice, you still don’t get it. This has nothing to do with wannabes. Nothing. The shoot itself is an obvious tribute to an era. And wanting to learn from those in the industry whose work and life/career choices you admire is hardly wannabe when you are at the career level these 2 are. In reality, Cassavetes was barely recognized or respected while alive. The much deserved appreciation for him and his work came after his death.

      • Alice too says:

If you say so Katherine. However, when the movie critics start comparing AJ unfavorably to Cassavetes, think of me will you?

It doesn’t really matter when JC was recognized. The reality is that his name has been pulled into the promotion for this movie. The press will remember that and fair or not, that is going to come up again and again in critic reviews. And even if his early efforts sucked, those are not the films this effort will be compared to.

      • DianaM. says:

Alice, you already know that they will compare AJ unfavorably to Cassavetes? You are already putting her down and nobody saw the movie yet. Don’t you think that this is unfair?

      • Alice too says:

@Diane: I’m not putting her down. I just think it’s very unlikely that her third attempt (or almost anyone’s if they haven’t already spent years behind the camera) at directing is going to fare well when put up against end of career Cassevetes films. The Press, being what they are, aren’t exactly known for comparing apples to apples. They like short attention grabbing headlines, they’ll likely pluck Cassavetes/Rowlands out of this interview without context, assuming they even bothered to read it which 80% of them probably won’t and use it in “apples to oranges” review headlines. They are sadly rather predictable.

@Katherine. Tribute, yes. See my comment above concerning “Tribute bands”. Also, see comment 41 below. My point exactly.

      • lola says:

What people are upset over, is the fact Brad is promoting his and Angie’s film. The hens were swearing up and down Brad would NEVER support Angie. I guess they don’t like to be reminded Brad is Angie’s husband, he loves her, he’s the father of her children. The hens were hoping he was going to distance himself from Angie and the film, therefore proving their delusion that Brad and Angie aren’t a couple. Plus the fact he talks lovingly about his wife, that was the nail in the coffin for the loonistons.

      • Alice too says:

@Lola: wouldn’t it be nice if the world was really as black and white as you seem to think it is?

I tell you what…go over to the Daily Mail and read the two pages of comments on the article they have up today about Pitt and Redford. As of right now, about 10% of them are saying “this is a stupid article”, maybe 5% are saying they are both great, maybe 5% are saying Pitt over Redford and the remaining 80% seem to think that Pitt can’t hold a candle to Redford.

After that, please feel free to come back and tell me about the hen thing again.

      • Caro says:

Really @Alice? You’re asking @Lola to go over to a hateful conservative ragbloid which is the home of FF, the ongoing Brangelina hater central (who hasn’t hesitate at Ted to call their children racist names, pray for plane crashes, and feed specious lies that their twin toddlers have Downs syndrome to tabloids, among other horrors)?

      • Alice too says:

@Caro: what are you talking about?

      • lola says:

@Alice too: Sorry, I can’t stomach DM, those people are crazy, and just downright mean for the fun of it. I wouldn’t take anything they say, seriously. I would hope most people would take any comment there with a grain of salt.

As for the posters there preferring Redford to Brad, so be it, also could be a generational thing. The oldies remember Redford in his prime.

      • Alice too says:

@lola: well, it was the first one that came up with any amount of comments when I did a search for Pitt/Redford that day. It was really the percentages that interested me, not the actual content of the comments.

You could be right about the generational thing. That said, you have to wonder who the target market is for this film. Presumably, people who are old enough to have memories of the 70’s, old enough to react to the Redford-alike photos and old enough to actually know who Cassavetes and Rowlands are. Otherwise, I suppose there would be no point in bringing them up in the promotional conversation. We’re probably looking at an over 45 target audience if that’s the case.

  22. Crumpet says:

I’m with you Kaiser. Why oh why hide all of this under layers of grungy grey hair?? Plus I love the way he has always stayed in shape unlike many male stars who shall remain unnamed.

    • Esteph says:

Agreed, agreed, agreed! I think when he is clean shaven he looks so young, it’s scary really. Regardless if they photoshopped him to death, he still looks so young.

  23. Naddie says:

What I like the most about Brad Pitt is that he refuses to be just the ultimate hot guy, if you look up his characters in Fight Club, 12 Monkeys and Inglorious Basterds, you know what I mean. The man has talent.

    • Whatevs says:

I disagree about the talent level – I’ve always thought he was fairly mediocre as an actor – but I agree with you that one of the most admirable things about him is that he refused to be put in the pretty-boy box. As soon as he had enough clout he started looking for interesting writers and directors to work with, trying to stretch himself. It’s clear that he’s intellectually curious and has a great appreciation for a lot of artistic pursuits – like architecture, obviously – but things like costume design too. The designer for Ocean’s 11 said Pitt was endlessly interested in the details of putting those gorgeous suits together, which I thought was pretty cool, especially since it doesn’t take a lot of work to make the guy look good.

      • Naddie says:

You made an interesting point. These characters I mentioned have somewhat a similar essence. I’ll search for different ones, to see if he can really play in another note.

  24. Nancypants says:

I think he resembles young Redford quite a lot. I’m not nearly as OLD as Redford but I was around when he was hot and, yes, he has a lot of sun damage but good grief! He lives in the mountains in Utah about 5 miles from the sun and is about 150 years old.

I think Pitt is a very pretty man and always has been but not hot to me.
My son hasn’t aged as well but there was always a strong resemblance and Brad and I aren’t so distant cousins.

  25. hmmm says:

Wha??! This dumb bunny compares themselves to the great and innovative Rowlands/Cassavetes? HAHAHAHAHAHA! It’s hubris, I tell ya.

  26. Hannah says:

No you’re not Brad. Cassavettes is one of the great American filmmakers. And gena Rowlamds performance in women on the verge is one of the female performances of all time.
Stop going Kanye on us Brad.

    • Did you READ the interview? He said he wanted to follow in their footsteps–not be them. This is a great compliment to Gina, since it seems as though they are close to her……Angelina has done two or three films with her (Playing by Heart; Taking Lives), and Gena presented her with her honorary Oscar a few years ago…..

“The plan was to make something together with complete autonomy, in the footsteps of Gena [Rowlands] and John [Cassavetes] – and keep it a family affair. We, by our own admission, were overdue. I’m I’m going to work, I want to work with my wife.”

      • Hannah says:

Angelina and Brad are good at what they do. Cassavettes and rowlands made revolutionary genius movies together. Watch women under the influence.

      • Katherine says:

We praise them now but at the time Cassavetes was considered pretentious and his films were not raved about. They were, however, appreciated by his colleagues for the raw storytelling he was going for. As much as I appreciated his work and enjoy that kind of film I wouldn’t call much of it genius.

      • Leah says:

One can argue about how good Cassavetes movies are, but look, Brad and Angie are a celebrated mainstream acting couple first and foremost. Angie is not (yet) a notable prolific director, Cassavetes was both prolific and notable besides i think Cassavetes filmmaking was more arty, more hipster, he didn’t belong to the mainstream all in all not a great comparison as Brad and Angie are as mainstream A list as they come.

  27. serena says:

Damn, he’s always so hot!! I’m so happy to have new Brangelina quotes And I love when Brad gives interviews because he actually let loose and spill something– which Angelina doesn’t-, so it’s nice.

  28. Moi says:

    Oh for the love of…

  29. Ennie says:

Hahaha he did not say that! He said they were trying to follow their steps (paraphrasing)
    Whatever.

    • Caro says:

lol Thank you @ENNIE – people can’t read these days. He clearly says, ‘in the footsteps of,’ which is a way to say what he finds admirable in filmmaking of this sort and would like to attain.

People so want to drag them down and beat them over the head (you know why..10yrs and counting, lol) that they don’t even bother to read or search for context. They conveniently forget we are talking about 4 people respected and honored in their industry who have been to the Oscar mountaintop, and are on par with each other. With Brad and Angie actually having WON Oscar…while John and Gena have not.

But shhhh…don’t tell the ever present still angry detractors that.

They only show their personal biases and bitterness when they screech and discuss accomplished talented people never having the skills, fortitude or opportunity to attain something really good.

What’s the difference between this kind of put down and someone saying a lame sitcom hack in an ensemble tv show who makes horrible rom coms, should never darken Oscars door?

      Same thing.

    • DianaM. says:

Exactly. He said they were trying to follow their steps: writing, directing and acting together – keeping it all in the family. He didn’t say they are trying to be them.

  30. Harryg says:

I’m from another country and we had a goofy comedy guy – not that attractive – whom Pitt somehow resembles. I can only see that guy when I look at Pitt.

  31. Jayna says:

I recently saw an old classic movie, Don’t Look Now, with Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland, filmed in 1973, about a couple after the loss of their child, in Venice. I get that same look of the movie how Angie shot in the clips I’ve seen. The lovemaking scene was stunning at the time when filmed and it was said it really happened or came close ,but very artfully done. There was nudity in that movie. I don’t know if there is in this movie. That movie was ultimately a thriller, though.

Here’s a photo of Julie and Donald in the movie in their hotel room. It has that same feel and vibe. I even get Angelina’s blonde look is kind of loosely channeling Julie Christie. Not on purpose, but just has that same look and delicate beauty. .

    • Cecilia says:

Julie Christie is sublime. Angelina Jolie is no Julie Christie, sorry.

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

Angie in her movie looks like Ariel Dombasle http://editionsdesfemmes.blogspirit.com/media/02/02/1952363380.jpg

      • Alice too says:

I always thought Dombasle was more of a “Jessica Rabbit” type… And she’s got a d*mned good plastic surgeon.

      • Caro says:

        @DontKillMeImFrench

She’s beautiful. As soon as you posted I recalled she guest starred on an old ep of Miami Vice, as what else? LOL…a love interest of Sonny’s (Don Johnson)…gross Ted Nugent was her murderous psycho lover.

She was stunning then, and looked exactly the same. Thanks for posting. Angelina does look a lot like her – wow.

btw, please confirm for the bitter betties: Hasn’t Ariel Dombasle *always* been beautiful? lol

Again why are fans of man trying to say Ariel Dombasle is not really that stunning and it’s all surgery. Is that some kind of backwards way to slam at Angie, because you said they resemble? There ARE people born beautiful. There are people born beautiful who are made more beautiful. WHATever. I really doubt twenty somethings in 1983 were having major facial overhauls. But whatever floats the snarky boat.

Women need to lose the rabid jealousy it’s ridiculous.

      • Alice too says:

Lol. Of course she’s always been beautiful. However, she’s probably had some very expert help staying that way.

Someone needs to lighten up a bit here and stop looking for insults where none exist…

    • lola says:

I’ve seen that film, very seventies, very arty, and also very good. Julie was really beautiful, and still is. She was still beautiful when she played Brad’s Mother in Troy.

I was very young when I came across the film, so the nudity was sort of a shock for me, my parents never knew I watched it. haha

  32. My two cents says:

I love Brad and Angelina together. When side by side it makes each one of them more beautiful to me. Knowing what great people they are on the inside makes their outside even better.

  33. NeoCleo says:

Brad Pitt is cute and sexy but he is NO Robert Redford. Redford is one of a few examples of men who in their youth are regarded as the pinnacle of male beauty. That does not describe Mr. Pitt.

    • Goo says:

      In TOTAL agreement!

    • WinnieCoopersMom says:

I think Redford always had the “grit” factor, if that makes sense. Sure, Brad has done some gritty work (Fight Club and Inglorious Bastards) but he has also been just the pretty face in so many roles (Meet Joe Black, M&M Smith) that I dont feel RR ever did. RR was always a man’s man cowboy at heart whereas BP was the pretty boy turned serious actor (similar to Matthew McC.).

      • Katherine says:

Yea, not the movies I saw him in back in the day. What movies was he gritty in? Redford was considered a pretty boy and not a very good actor. Personally I would go to his films with that widely believed meme in my head but come away thinking he did fine in his role. That happened time and again.

Pitt has far more gritty roles in his resume starting in the earliest days of his film career.

      • Goo says:

“Pitt has far more gritty roles in his resume starting in the earliest days of his film career.”….. Yes, “Thelma and Louise” scream gritty!

      • Ennie says:

I saw him playing bad guys, and yes, I think he plays them well. I could not stomach Kalifornia, for example. I like Fightclub, but still, I have a weak stomach for some movies.

      • Katherine says:

Goo, how in the world does listing ONE film dispute my remark? So major fail there for you.

If you want to list both resumes and find me wrong I’m all ears.

      • Marlin says:

I don’t think either Redford or Pitt has much acting talent, both pretty boys. That being said, loved loved loved Redford in The Way We Were, nobody else could’ve been Hubbard but him. Loved Pitt in A River Runs Through It, that to me is his best film, he was perfect in the role. I have liked a lot of their movies, but never really expect an Oscar worthy performance from either. As far as Brangie, I like them together, much better fit than Pitt/Aniston. Angie actually seems out of brads league to me, but I think they both have a deep love for each other. Will the marriage last forever? Who knows, but I think the love will.

  34. Cecilia says:

I understand that Brad Pitt is considered to be quite attractive but I have never found him in the least bit appealing and I’m not sure why. Never found Robert Redford appealing either (Paul Newman on the other hand, oh my goodness!!). I met Redford in 1978 so he was still young (in his 40s) and he did nothing for me up close and personal either. Anyway, to me, there is just something icky and unappealing about Brad Pitt.

    • Cecilia, you’re back (if you’re the same one)!!

Lol, I found Redford to be so hot and charming in “Indecent Proposal”. I have to watch his other movies. I’m on a Peter O’Toole kick right now. Don’t get how someone who smoked and boozed THAT hard, stayed so beautiful.

      • lower-case deb says:

my son discovered o’Toole singing Dem Bones in one of his friend’s twitter feed. called me as the youtube vid loaded, and showed me it because he thought it’s up my old woman alley.

halfway in he said in a typical teenaged boy whine: Why Is He So Byutiful? And I want a suit jacket like that. (there’s been so many weddings in the family lately. he actually hates suits, but Dear Peter sold my son the virtues of a well cut suit)

and now he’s doing that Dem bones walk and screaming Dem Bones Dem Bones around the house.
        https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=LWdxezzDHKo

      • Cecilia says:

        @ Virgilia
I don’t know if I’m the same Cecilia – I don’t comment all that often. Anyway, have you ever seen THE RULING CLASS with Peter O’Toole? It is crazy and over the top but I loved it!! Highly recommend. And I think that is where the “Dem Bones” singing that lower-case deb refers to comes from.

      • trilby227 says:

If you love Peter O’Toole, try to see “Dean Spanley”. This film was never released in theaters in the US for some reason, but it is excellent. It was showing on Showtime, and I watched it because he was in it. Jeremy Northam and Sam Neill are also in it. O’Toole plays Northam’s father (the film was made in 2008), and he is just so funny and touching in the role. Sorry to ramble on, but I love this film. The film might be available on Netflix, it was streaming there for a while.

      • SusanneToo says:

Peter is rather heartbreaking in Casanova. The scene in Lawrence – striding back and forth atop the train – I could see it 100 times and still get chills.

    • shi_gatsu says:

I love your name! My Cecilia just turned 1. I LOVE Paul Newman! He was so sexy because he was so smart and a little irreverant 🙂 so playful
Something I feel both Pitt and Redford lacked

      • Cecilia says:

I’m much older than that (obviously if I met Redford in 1978) but I am so happy that you named your daughter Cecilia. I always loved my name and growing up there were very few of other Cecilias so that was nice (lots of Debbies and Lindas!!)

    • lolamd says:

Same here. I thought Robert Redford was handsome but Paul Newman that is whole other story. Sexy sexy sexy ….

    • Nancy says:

Agree. Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, now that was a class act husband and wife pairing. The fact that Joanne was never a bombshell beauty made it so much more relatable and loving. Paul Newman and John John Kennedy, both gone, both legends in their own right and both exceedingly handsome…..not pretty boys. Not saying BP isn’t good looking, but I think he peaked out early. Loved Thelma and Louise and Legends of the Fall Brad for sure.

      • Katherine says:

They tried to fashion Woodward as a bombshell from time to time but she clearly wanted more.

      • Nancy says:

That says something…wow….good response, she clearly wanted more.

      • lola says:

Wonder how Newman would have fared in today’s social media. Having an affair with Joanne, while married with 2 kids. Getting his wife pregnant, while simultaneously sleeping with Joanne, then leaving his pregnant wife and 2 kids to move in with Joanne. By the time his wife would divorce Paul, Joanne was already about to give birth, and Paul had a newborn daughter with his estranged wife.

Makes Brad look like a saint. LOL

      • trilby227 says:

Now Brad’s a saint, too. Wow.

      • lola says:

@trilby227: I didn’t mean to imply Brad Pitt is a saint, just that some tried to vilify Brad for getting a divorce, while most think Paul and Joanne were the gold standard of “happily ever after”, in HW.

The studio system back in the olden days protected their stars, and never allowed any bad publicity. In today’s HW, Paul and Joanne would be crucified by the public, and social media. Paul Newman was a good man, I don’t doubt that for a minute, he said he carried guilt all his life for abandoning his children, especially after his only son died of a drug overdose. That tragedy is what inspired Paul Newman’s charities.

  35. jammypants says:

    Gorgeous man!

  36. Rhiley says:

He is beautiful, but I don’t like his hair in these photos. I like that he doesn’t have a beard, but the hair, looks too dry and very wiglet. But at least it isn’t flat ironed.

  37. Ally.M says:

Maybe him and his ex are going to do a remake of ‘The Way We Were’. Now that would be a box office hit.

    • Leah says:

They are a bit too old to play college students.

      • Ally.M says:

Lol…Leah, I wasn’t being serious. I should have explained, I was thinking of the time JA did the Barbra Streisand photo shoot.

    • june says:

Except Aniston is not a draw & never has been.

Brad makes films that actually get nominated for Oscars, Aniston on the other hand is desperate for the Oscars to notice her, but her desperation was ignored.

    • lola says:

@Ally M: Brad’s photoshoot was a throwback to “Three Days of the Condor”, not, The Way We Were. The magazine made that clear.

  38. tmbg says:

Why couldn’t she have joined him for the photo shoot? I would have bought the magazine if she did! I still love that shoot they did together for W magazine.

Brad looks so much better clean-shaven.

  39. Leah says:

Redford was beyond beautiful in those old movies. “The way we were” played on his beauty, he was sort of the woman of that movie. It one of my all time fave romantic movies. Its epic.
Is Brad a better actor? I don’t necessarily think so. I think he is a showier actor. Redford at his peak has a simplistic acting style and effortless charm and charisma. There is something very natural about his acting. His work is just as good but in a different way. He is also been in so many classic movies.

  40. antipodean says:

I love Angie and Brad, but there is always a danger in putting oneself into the shoes of legends, it smacks of hubris, and is more often than not undeserved. Gena Rowlands and John Cassavetes were unique, and their like will never be repeated. Instead why not just try to be the best Angie and Brad, nothing wrong with that.

    • Katherine says:

An acting/directing couple who works together preferrably on indie type experimental films? Of course that model can be repeated. This isn’t the first time and with John and Gena that wasn’t the first time either.

      • hmmm says:

Such reductive reasoning. Cassavetes had a considered and raw signature style, unique to him. So much more than merely ‘indie experimentation”.

Anyone can claim to be an indie/experimental film maker. And still be untalented, dull, and lacking uniqueness of voice.

    • Leah says:

      I agree @antipodean
      Unfortunate quote i think.

    • june says:

Gena is actually great friends with B&A, in an interview with Elle she mentions she recently had dinner with them.

  41. desertrose says:

Someone went too far with the photoshop. They Benjamin Buttoned him.

  42. LizzyFizzy says:

I saw these last night and my first thought was, “that’s some wig.” It totally is, right? His natural hair is straight and, at least in more recent photos where he’s buzzcut, not that thick and full anymore. The hairline/set of this hair is different. Redford had Breck girl hair back in the day–just oodles and oodles of bouncy hair with lots of texture. I’m not sure Pitt ever had that much quantity/thickness, even when he was young and it was very long, circa Legends of the Fall.

I’m sort of fascinated by what they can do with wigs and hairpieces for men now. Look at Matt Damon’s lush ponytail a few months ago. He never had that much hair in his life, lol. And David Spade was on the Tonight Show the other night and in HD, I realized he was wearing a ‘piece on the top of his head. It was all full and slicked back, but flatter and thin (real hair) around his ears. A quick google revealed that Spade, Charlie Sheen, and some other people are suspected of wearing hairpieces for work. I’d known about Travolta, but a lot of them are a surprise.

    • LizzyFizzy says:

I was also surprised to realize that Alison Janney wears extensions for thickness on Mom. I saw a re-reun where she had a small part on Frasier and her hair was baby fine back then. She must wear lots of extensions now.

    • Caro. says:

Shorter version of @LizzyFizzy ‘s post:

Why does Brad, his brother and his 80 yr old Dad get to keep their full luscious glorious manes and locks…

..while no name unknown kept struggling actors that the tv sitcom actress from Friends settled for, is very short and very BALD?

Why would Brad Pitt of all people, have to wear a wig. Even if he had to, because he was bald like skinny jeans, he’s not the type to do so. Once and for all, Brad has thick locks and is not losing his hair. Sorry to disappoint.

When a guy wears a buzz cut and it’s just as thick close to the scalp, there’s your answer. So just stahp already. Lol

      • lola says:

@Caro: The loonistons only started the “Brad is bald” nonsense when they saw their leader had bought a bald gigolo.

      • LizzyFizzy says:

Yes, Justin Theroux is very balding and has terrible hairpieces. His hairline looks inked-on with a Sharpie, it’s so bad and Travolta-esque. But I’ve never thought he was an attractive or even interesting person–he is odd-looking and unappealing to me. I’m not somehow passively defending him or Aniston. Actually, I think even her much-lauded hair has also thinned from years of straightening treatments and getting older. It’s downright stringy at the ends lately. I’m just interested in people’s hair tricks in Hollywood, even for men.

Brad is not bald (never said he was!), but it is obvious this was a Redfordesque wig chosen particularly for this Redford-themed photoshoot. You can tell that from his most recent interview with Jolie–different hairline, length, color, everything:
        http://www.justjared.com/2015/10/30/angelina-jolie-brad-pitt-give-rare-interview-together-video/

    • Ms. X says:

@lizzyfizzy: I agree that it’s a wig which was used because his own hair probably wasn’t the right length/color etc. Nothing to do with hair loss!

  43. Reece says:

I find him much more attractive now than I ever did in his younger pretty days. In fact I think I was one of the few people who could not believe Angelina for fall for “him of all people” when they first got together. Obvs now I know there’s more tI him than pretty and I love them together.
*polishes Brange Stan badge puts it old school Ange Stan badge*

  45. Nymeria says:

I still think something isn’t right in Brad-and-Angieville. They are covering it up with quotes about working together and parenting together, but I just get the feeling they’re in a rough spot.

  46. Kate says:

What’s with the ridiculous Tom Cruise hair? And his interviews are exasperating, but that’s because stupid celebrities drooling out inane words are a special species of annoying. I wish he wouldn’t speak publicly. It’s embarrassing.

    • Maya says:

Atleast he is not talking about how much he loves Angelina’s eyeballs and how’s he is thinking thoughts…

  47. Lisa says:

As long as they don’t try to remake Gloria (again) with Angie, knock yourself out.

  48. Amal's Wardrobe says:

    Robert Redford!!!!!

So they’re promoting the film separately? Interesting.

    • Caro. says:

Uh..just like one interview featuring Brad speaking adoringly, is apparently making a poster ridiculously create all kinda fantasy scenarios about their ‘status,’ I think they recognize both of them together would be too much to handle for some, lol. Cat ladies would start burning things down.

    • lola says:

Tune in to the Today show Monday morning, Brad and Angie, together, being interviewed by Tom Brokaw. So, there goes your theory, “sorry”.

  49. CatScratchFever says:

I named one of my dogs Hubble Gardner.

    Is Brad a Capricorn?

    • Amal's Wardrobe says:

Sag with a lot of Cappie planets, hence the fascination with building and architecture despite the zany (Sag) choice for career.

Angie, if I recall correctly, has a lot of Aries, Gemini, and Cancer in her chart. Aries + Sag, 5/5. Gemini + Sag 5/5. Cappie is very, very attracted to Cancer. They’ve got excellent astro compatibility.

  50. allheavens says:

I am a fan of Redford and Pitts but I can’t believe people acting as if Robert Redford suddenly turned into Marlon Brando. He is a good actor and but more of a movie star.

None of his roles required much of a stretch, if you look closely. I think his choice is roles were quite suited to his persona and they did not challenge him THAT much.

When I look at Redford’s acting career I always remember the line from “The Way We Were”: “In a way he was like the country he lived in everything came to easily to him. But at least he knew it.

I agree with @Caro Pitt has taken more chances in his career.

And the photos hoot is channeling the 70s, the aviators, the hair, the sweater, basically channeling Redford.

    • Hannah says:

Pitt is not Brando either. Neither of them are. Just because Brad has taken on more disguises doesn’t necessarily make him a better or more truthful actor. Morgan freeman is an understated beautiful actor who never puts on a fake nose or grows a beer gut, does that make him a lesser actor than say Pitt or pattison, because they ” take more chances” as in go further to disguise their looks?

acttually it shouldn’t be a competition, you can like both actors.

      • Caro. says:

@Hannah, I think you miss @Allheavens point. Some people are in such a rush to attack one accomplished person in the industry (to demean him by comparison to another): Brad Pitt for merely wearing avaiators and daring to look like Redford, which even Redford said he can’t help (he directed Brad in RRTI)…that they’re refusing to hear what people are saying who are defending him:

That these same misperceptions existed about Redford from the start of his acting career to right around middleage.

That they are doing to Brad what was done to Redford by his own industry, but that unlike Redford, Brad was seen early on as having chops, and was honored by his industry while still in his 20s.

Redford wasn’t ackowledged by Oscar with even a nomination, until he was middle aged. (He was nom’d for The Sting at 40 something, his only nomination…Brad had 3…and counting)

  51. CatScratchFever says:

Hm. I am cappie. Ex was cancer. Ew.

    What about capricin/ pisces? ☺

  52. What's inside says:

Robert Redford in the naval uniform from The Way We Were…..perfection. Nothing comes close. Not even Brad. I can see what people are talking about, but am not drooling.

PITT AND JOLIE ARE TOO MAINSTREAM TO BE ROWLANDS & CASSAVETES

Exactly. Pitt sure as hell as an ego and the hide to compare himself to Cassavetes.

    • lola says:

Wrong era. Gena and John were doing their thing in the sixties and seventies. I do love some of their films, especially, “Woman Under the Influence”. Gena got an Oscar nod for BA for that film.

I swear I’m past it all, and I know that everyone is groaning inwardly because everyone knows what I’m gonna say. it just sucks that they started out the way they did. it sucks. can I just say that? if i were aniston, i would secretly read stuff like this, and it would secretly cut me like a knife. do you think she has truly honestly complEEEEEEtely moved on? you don’t think there’s some night…like, once in a full moon, when she’s had a weak moment, and she comes across an old something or other, or hears a song, and she looks up something…..Articles like this. It even stings me, and I’m not even jennifer aniston.

Does anyone know what I’m saying? Please don’t anyone be mean to me b/c I’ve never posted on here, so don’t feed me to the lions…it’s just that I don’t even know really what my point is. I just think that angelina jolie FASCINATES me with her man-eater-ability!!! her-voodoo-poo******-ness that I wish I knew what it was that she had!!! HAHA!

He’s just *still* SO FALL ALL OVER HIMSELF SMITTEN with her….and these are some shallow celebrities so this is an even crazier deal.OKAY, I’m done. I’m not even drunk either.

PS who knew his hair was so amazeballs???

They did not have chlidren. For real one moves on, people can do it. I do not think of my first huge love, and let me tell you that it was borderline obsession! I can see what I lived for what it was ,the good and the bad.
It would have to be more than just a failed relationship, IMO to miss, maybe she could miss the status or clout of being married to a successful producer (even if his company is smallish, it IS successful), of being with an A-lister. Here she is the one who is being the more important in the media, she has to shill her products and all that while before she was part of an IT couple, a “golden” couple (blergh).
She (her PR) will milk the “ex” title for ever and ever, tho.

  58. Ain't No Telling says:

Brad is an honest to God, good looking man. Met him at a premiere. Redford gave me a compliment years ago when our cars were adjacently stuck in traffic, and he was very handsome. Interestingly enough, met Angelina at the Girl Interrupted premiere. There is a reason Hollywood chose these three. They are all beautiful, surgery or not.
