Was Dakota Johnson’s Gucci the worst look of the LACMA Art + Film gala?

FFN_RIJ_LACMA2015_110715_51902445

This year’s LACMA Art + Film Gala honored James Turrell & Alejandro Inarritu, and the guest list was pretty A-list, which makes me happy. I was going to groan about the bad fashion on display, but honestly… some of these looks are so bad that I’m genuinely enjoying them. There have been so many boring red carpets lately, so it’s exciting when a design house like Gucci sponsors an event, forces most of the Fashion Girls to wear their clothes, and then half of them look terrible.

Take Dakota Johnson up there. Dakota is a newly-minted movie star and a burgeoning Fashion Girl. I like that she’s not all about showing skin, and there’s nothing wrong with going for a more conservative look. But this Gucci is AWFUL. It looks like something a 70-year-old widow would have worn. In 1959. Is it the terrible rancid-mustard color? Is it the high-neck with the fussy ruffles and bow? Or is it the combination of everything? Hilariously bad. And even worse on someone so young! Also: why is she so committed to those bangs?

As much as I disliked that gown on Dakota, she wasn’t the worst dressed of the evening. No, that honor went to Chloe Sevigny. Chloe wore Gucci and it was appallingly and hilariously bad. It’s so terrible that I love that she wore it.

Like Kim Kardashian, Diane Kruger eschewed the sponsor of the evening, Gucci. Diane instead went with this Monique Lhuillier Spring 2016 look. I love the pants. I don’t even hate the whole look together.

Salma Hayek’s husband owns Gucci. So Salma wore Gucci. I’m still complaining about Gucci trying to make this shade of bubble-gum pink “happen.” It’s not happening. Salma’s skin and hair look very pretty though.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Gucci. I like this color on her a lot, and while I appreciate the craftsmanship of the dress (in close-ups, the detailing is lovely), this isn’t really the best look for Gwyneth. Also: poorly styled with the flat-ironed, center-part hair.

Kelly Rohrbach has been doing more red carpets for the past few months. Which just goes to show you, dating Leonardo DiCaprio is still a good career move for a model. Leo was host of the evening (because Alejandro!), but he didn’t walk the carpet with Kelly, nor did he walk the carpet at all. I guess he’s trying to dial down the thirsty vibe.

Chloe’s dress is hilarious. What the heck is up with that tiger on the bottom??? I really don’t mind Dakota’s dress…I think it is kind of pretty on her.

    • Snazzy says:

Chloe’s dress does look like it was designed by a 10 year old, doesn’t it? Maybe we are just not avant-garde fashionista enough to understand that in fact that was the point?

      • cleveland girl says:

It reminds me of Angelina’s wedding dress where she had the kids doodles embroidered on the dress. I thought that was hideous as well!

      • Mieke says:

Hmm, with the wedding dress it’s a personal touch, and with it being on the veil in stead of on the dress itself, made it meh, sure why not, for me. Chloe’s dress, I don’t know, the colors and embroidery remind me of something I just can’t put my finger on…

    • Lilacflowers says:

The tiger is going to grab the giant strawberries but the snake is going to bite the tiger.

      • SamiHami says:

I don’t know why, but I kinda love that dress! It’s definitely hideous and looks like a child designed it. But it just looks fun! Maybe if it didn’t have that awful yellow color, and the decorations were a bit smaller…

      • esthetix says:

The tiger and the strawberry is a famous Zen story.

        Still an awful dress though.

    • CTgirl says:

She obviously wandered through an embroidery factory and was taken down by some angry workers. What else could explain the tiger-mongoose thing at the bottom?

    • seesittellsit says:

This – I kinda warmed to Dakota’s dress, too. It’s such a hard color to wear for most white girls, so that’s a problem, if it had been slate grey or violet I think it would have been quietly quirkily beautiful. Paltrow looks far worse, and so do Chloe (ugh) and Kruger. As for Salma – it’s all about the girls, not the dress, which looks like a nightie. But Paltrow is too old at this point to be doing the long hair and short ruffled dress thing. Girlfriend, do the math and grow up.

      • zinjojo says:

Agree. I think without the floppy bow, Dakota’s dress would be lovely, and especially so in another color — as seesittellsit says above, slate grey or violet would work very nicely. We’re seeing so many references to the early 80s now with the prairie dress/Laura Ashley/floppy bow looks.

Gwyneth’s dress had way too many ruffles, and her hair is beyond help at this point. She also needs to pull her shoulders back — I always get the impression when she wears a short dress that she’s uncomfortable in it because she hunches so much.

That shade of pink does Salma no favors. It just doesn’t work with her olive skin tone. Those of us with olive undertones to our skin have to be careful with the pinks we wear, and that’s just a really ugly pink all around. But of course, Salma’s making a very obvious statement in that dress — at first glance I thought it didn’t fit her, but that bodice is fitted like a glove, so she must want to show that much boob.

But no one, not even Chloe with her super wacky tiger & strawberry dress touches the awfulness that is the outfit that Kim Kardashian wore. Worst. dress. ever.

      • bellenola says:

Yeah, it’s an ugly pink. How Salma ever manages to look anything but flawless is beyond me, she is such a gorgeous woman.

Chloe Sevigny gives such good FACE. We are all peasants.

    • SKF says:

Wow. Not a great collection! But you know, if I had to pick a favourite I’d actually go for Chloe’s crazy dress. At least it’s interesting and original. It’s so out there it’s kind of fabulous and I think she pulls it off. Hideous but interesting at the same time!

Salma’s dress is so cheap and tacky looking. Not a fan of that hideous mustard thing, or Goopy’s green frills. I don’t like what Diane is wearing either which is unusual. It looks like a school design project to me. Poorly tailored too. Kelly is just… Yawn!

  2. Willa says:

I really like Dakota’s dress. I would totally wear it. I like everyone’s look except Chloes dress.

    • Samtha says:

I’m glad it’s not just me…I actually like that dress! It shouldn’t work, but somehow it does. And she looks lovely in it.

      • Sullivan says:

I agree, Dakota looks lovely in the dress. I like her dress the best.

      • belle de jour says:

Agree – and it looks fantastic on her.

      • lucy says:

As dresses go, it is not much to look at on its own. But add Dakota, and the combination is quite beautiful. The fit is perfect, the colors are season-appropriate and really flatter Johnson extraordinarily. The whole here is greater than the sum of its parts. This is definitely the best look of all shown. And it would look dreadful on most anyone else.

Salma seems to be wearing a badminton birdie.

    • Santia says:

She looks like a pilgrim to me. That being said, I’d wear it, too! 🙂 But she has no it factor; just basic.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I love the dress too, but I would love it even more if the bow was smaller. I alos would like Gwyneth’s dress without the red flower.

      • sills says:

Yeah, this dress is quite nice and I like the unusual color, but please shrink or remove that Little House on the Prairie bow.

      • belle de jour says:

The dress on the runway was lovely & proportionate (Goop had it severely shortened) and very pretty as originally designed.

    • Marie-France says:

I also like Dakotas dress and would def wear it.

      • Alexa says:

Me too. It’s definitely something that stands far above so many of the other looks seen on celeb carpets. (I question this CB author’s taste. No offense! I’m just playing along and sharing my opinion. At the end of the day, none of this crap really matters.)

    • carol says:

I like Dakota’s dress as well but I would take the flower off. I think the worst is Salma Hayek. the dress is pretty but just not on her. I think I would like Diane Kruger’s outfit if the pants were a tad tapered at the bottom of the pant. They have different looks and so not boring.

    • Mixtape says:

      Yes, I love it, too!

Also, with the exception of KR, all of the dresses here are unique. While they’re not all something I would wear, it’s refreshing to see different looks on the red carpet.

  3. saywhatwhen says:

Gywneth is not my cup of tea. But her legs are amazing.

Dakota’s stylist/makeup team went all suffragette on her or what?

    • Ally8 says:

Without that red flower, the stripper heels and the tragic droopy hair, it might have worked. The green is the most interesting color of the night anyway.

I can’t believe Gucci thinks this is a successful promotional event. A bunch of people with stylists, make-up and hair people… all looking terrible in their clothes regardless. Here’s hoping for their sake that there are enough dumb rich people out there who’ll buy anything a celebrity wears.

  4. Beatrice says:

Salma and Dakota look like they’re channeling the old West of Gunsmoke–Miss Kitty meets the new schoolmarm. What’s happening to Gucci? Tom Ford must be rolling with laughter.

  5. Addison DeWitt says:

I actually like Dakota’s dress; maybe just not for this event. And Chloe’s would have been better without the cartoonish embellishments.

  6. Sara says:

I think Paltrow could wear a pixie cut with chic. I wish she would.

    • Danielle says:

She’s done a short do before and rocked it. Loved her hair shoulder length. She needs to cut it again. The lank straw like hair is aging her.

      • Antonym says:

I absolutely loved her short hair in Sliding Doors. Wish she would chop it off again, it was a great look for her.

      • hmph says:

It was a great look on her because she was young back then and had enough softness in her face to pull it off.
It wouldn’t work now because her face is hard, leathery and just plain older.
She should keep the length she has now but let her natural waves loose and also part her hair slightly off center. And a more ashy blond would look so much better but she’d have to stop tanning and I doubt she’d want that.

      • Locke Lamora says:

I also think she would look great with a pixie. And if she layed of the spray tan.

      • Crumpet says:

She would still look good with short hair – it is not just young women who can rock it. The best think about her hair being short is she wore it parted on the side and it did wonders for her face!

      • zinjojo says:

I loved her hair in sliding doors. I think she could still pull off that kind of short, layered bob, I just think she’s way too tied to her long, bleached, flat-ironed hair, despite the fact that it’s very unflattering and aging.

If she insists on long hair, she should work with her natural waves, soften the color and move the damn part to the side.

  7. Jan says:

I actually really like Dakotas dress – I think it looks amazing on her! Especially compared to Chloe’s emoji dress.

  8. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Dakota’s dress is almost ok. I don’t mind that color on her. I’m not crazy about the rose and bow. I don’t usually like artificial flowers.

Chloe. Holy Sh!t!!!! Wtf and all the rest. Just mind-boggling.

Diane – meet Jorge Jetson…Jane his wife! I hate that look.

    Salma always looks tacky.

Goop- like the color. Not a good shape for her.

Kelly – flattering. Not crazy about the strips of strappy everywhere. Distracting.

Gucci, honey…Get it together. Snap out of it.

    • Antonym says:

I agree, regarding Dakota’s dress. If the bow, rose, ruffles and are those pearl buttons(?!?) were removed it would look good. I like the color and the cut is beautiful in my book.

I don’t quite hate Diane’s look, but I do think the boot cut on the pants kills its potential. I think if they’d been pencil pants (a bit more Jane Jetson, LOL) it could have looked good.

  9. smcollins says:

Chloe’s dress is by far my least favorite, and Diane’s ensemble is my favorite. The giant red bow on Dakota’s dress is pretty distracting, but you know what, I don’t mind the overall look. I can’t decide if I like Gwyneth’s dress, or if she looks like a little Christmas tree. Tough call.

  10. Fluff says:

They all look awful apart from the white dress.

  11. Shambles says:

    What in the actual F*CK?

    PS. Salma’s boobs are amazing.

  12. andrea says:

I actually like Dakota´s look, to be honest 🙂
I also think that she is one of those women, who can pull bangs off?

  13. boredblond says:

Looks like a school-marm character (Mizz Mustard) in an old western movie; the geo/pants is a copy of bad sci-fi Cat women on the Moon costume; the Gucci turtle/frog/tiger/feather thing..well..pretty funny. Evidently there are no mirrors at Gucci…

  14. Izzy says:

Well, Dakota is ready for Thanksgiving…

  15. astrid says:

Did Salma get some girl work done?

  16. dr mantis toboggan says:

I love how Chloe wears that shit with a straight face

    • Naddie says:

Hahahahaha, yeah! I just wouldn’t have the capacity to do so. But I love dress-trolling.

    • Crumpet says:

To be fair, it does look like she is biting down on her cheek severely in order to keep the straight face.

  17. Danielle says:

I don’t dislike pink, but Gucci is not doing it right.

  18. lucy2 says:

Well, at these some of these gave me a good laugh this morning.

  19. Sea Dragon says:

My Grandma would have been 95 and would never have worn a mustard color anything. Also, Dakota needs better support for her girls.

I love the tiger/cat on Chloe’s dress. So cute for a kids book. The dress didn’t make sense to me though. I think she wanted the attention.

Goopy has killer legs! The dress is too young for her sophisticated style and the shoes could have been amazing but they were as standard as they come. The lack of shape does her no favours either.

I love a well fit corset and Selma’s got it goin’ on. The color is different and unusual. The red nail and accessories compliment her though she might have wanted to go with a more dramatic red lip? Seems right.

  20. jwoolman says:

The mustard dress would be fine if they just removed that bow/flower thing. Let the mustard breathe free. I am getting an unusual craving for a veggie burger, though.

  21. SamiHami says:

Luckily for them Kim Kardashian was there. Compared to her, they all look good.

  22. Lara K says:

Dakota needs 19 cats and a mad cackle to complete the look.

  23. Boston Green Eyes says:

Dakota’s dress is like something from Little House on the Prairie – albeit in a really not so good color. Chloe is just strange. Always has been, always will be. I like Kelly’s and Gwyneth’s dresses and yeah, Gwyn needs to do something about that hair.

  24. hmph says:

I love Salma’s hair! She looks so great with her natural curls, much younger and feminine.

  25. minx says:

HATE Goopy’s dress, and she needs to update her hair.

  26. Mia4s says:

Dakota doing a tribute to my 80 year old grandmother. Well at least she got some press.

This poor girl is proof positive that the Hollywood star system is over. She and that Jamie guy were in a movie that made half a billion dollars and no one cares. No one. Zero excitement for their next projects. Low level buzz. A few more roles, a few more red carpets. No f**ks given. It’s astounding.

  27. Skyblue says:

Dakota looks pretty and surprisingly comfortable in that goofy dress. Everyone else looks ridiculous. Diane Krugers ensemble is awful…shiny boot cut pants…no bueno!!!!!

  28. Naddie says:

Mustard is hell. It should be a crime to wear anything in this color.
I like Gwyneth and Kelly’s dresses.

  29. Memibee says:

I’m no prude but,Why was Dakota’s dress considered the worst when Kim k was there practically wearing a nightgown?

  30. Marny says:

Dakota’s dress looks really pretty on her but her main problem is her hair. With a dress like that she should have her hair down and in sexy waves or something- as it is she looks like a schoolmarm.

  31. Mar says:

I have much mixed feelings on all the fashion in this post- but I don’t like how Selma looks here at all. Gucci pink is not a flattering link this season.

    • belle de jour says:

She looks the worst, imo… like she got stuck in an ill-fitting Jessica McClintock in candy heart colors for the big Valentine’s Day Dance.

  32. meme says:

They are all look a thousand times better than Kimbo even though Chloe’s dress is really hideous.

  33. JenniferJustice says:

Dakota’s dress is matronly and ill-suited to her age I guess? But nothing compared to KimK’s brothel in mourning curtain materials….like NOTHING compared to that. Dakota looks like a fashion success compared to Kim!!!

  34. Lrm says:

Great color on Dakota. Not many people can wear that color though it’s so beautiful that I envy those who can. Dakota has an old Hollywood glamor IMO. She seems like she can wear many styles well and presents elegantly. She has a quiet charisma rather than in your face it factor. I think she’ll be around for the long haul.

Speaking of long haul, Diane Kruger can wesr almost anything. Similar to cate blanchett that way. I love Diane s outfit but only on her. And probably cate would rock it too. LOL

  35. Cleo says:

I love the mustard dress. Best in show.

  36. Amy M. says:

I know this site has a severe bangs phobia but Dakota pulls them off and they frame her face nicely. I always thought she looked super cute with them. Some people do look good with bangs. It all depends on how they are styled.

  37. Sarah01 says:

I love her dress minus the embellishment on the neck area. The rest are odd.

  38. mayamae says:

Isn’t Gwyneth’s flower a poppy? I assumed she’s wearing it for Remembrance/Veteran’s Day. In the US, Veteran’s day is the eleventh, but isn’t the UK celebrating it for a week?

Dakota’s dress isn’t from 1959. Add a bustle and parasol, and she could rock that dress back in the late 19th century.

  39. Willa says:

I’d really like Dakota’s dress if the bow wasn’t there.

  40. I Choose Me says:

I really like Salma’s gown and I would straight up love it if not for the shoved up boobage. And I guess I like rancid mustard ’cause I kind of dig Dakota’s outfit, silly bow and all.

  41. JudyK says:

Love Dakota Johnson, but she looks like she just walked off the set of “Little House on the Prairie.”

  42. Tessd says:

I love Dakota’s dress – it’s striking, it’s stylish and she is definitely pulling it off!

  43. Bread and Circuses says:

Okay, that rancid mustard colour is gross, but…

…she looks very good in it. She’s one of the rare people who can wear that colour and have their skin look luminous rather than sickly.

I agree it’s a terrible design. I like the length and the fabric, but it’s boring above the waist and that bow thing is ugly.

  44. aurelia says:

Sad day indeed when Kelly Rohrbach actually looked the best of them

  45. KaleIt says:

I like it. A nice change. In fact, all the outfits in this thread are interesting except for Goop’s. Kelly looks really good.

    • KaleIt says:

Goop’s and Selma’s that is. Selma is usually worst dressed, even if Cher’s at the same event.

  46. Livealot says:

    So much FUG

  47. Rosa says:

I love all of these. Except for the black and white gown – way too boring. I LOVE Dakota’s dress. Chole looks great as usual. This is the first time Gwenyth has ever looked any good.

  48. Goodgrief says:

Does Diane ever relax and naturally smile? She is so gorgeous but every time I see her she looks irritated or displeased. But her guy (can’t think of his name) is always having a good time. Maybe I’m looking at the wrong pictures?
