Here are some photos from Saturday night’s big LA premiere of The Danish Girl. The studio, Focus Features, has been rolling this film out gradually and they’re keeping a pretty tight grip on the hype, I think. Like, Eddie Redmayne and Alicia Vikander were in the “conversation” about all of the big awards, but Focus must have been worried that the hype would peak too soon. Eddie in particular has been relatively quiet, although word is that he’s being shaking hands and doing some quiet campaigning. Of course, it could be that everyone involved in this film just really, really believes in it. I watched the HBO First Look for the film and it seriously made me cry, just by seeing how much work Eddie in particular put into this role.
Anyway, fashion. It’s consistently funny to me that the biggest headlines out of the premieres are always about Amber Heard and Scarfy Depp. She’s dragged Depp to every film festival and premiere for this film and… I don’t know, she really just has a small, supporting part. Amber wore this Dolce & Gabbana suit which I honestly don’t hate on her. Probably because the style reminds me a lot of that Saint Laurent tuxedo Angelina Jolie wore to the BAFTAs in 2014. As for Scarfy Depp… I feel for him. I feel like Amber throws a temper tantrum if he doesn’t walk red carpets with her. Dear Amber: even without Scarfy, we would still cover you. Don’t worry, chica. PS… Scarfy’s LIFTS OF DOOM.
Here’s Alicia Vikander in yet another Louis Vuitton. She’s almost exclusive worn Louis Vuitton to every red carpet this year because she has a contract/brand-ambassadorship with the label. Here’s the thing: even actresses with contracts with certain houses are allowed to branch out occasionally with other designers. And at this point, seeing Alicia in LV is SO BORING. The dresses rarely do much for her and she wasting so many potentially interesting red-carpet-moments.
And finally, here’s Eddie Redmayne and his lovely wife Hannah Bagshawe. Eddie wore a fabulous checkered suit (HIS STYLE!!!!!) and Hannah wore Alexander McQueen, one of her favorite labels. I kind of think they’re the best-dressed couple, right? And Hannah’s dress is by far the best on the carpet.

I actually think this is him making an effort. He wears those giant lifts and colours his hair so there is no trace of grey. There is clearly a vanity there, he wants to look young and um …tall ..but the effort is ruined because he looks unwell and out of shape.
If he has substance abuse issue its more than making “an effort” thats needed.
Leah, I do not know how it is vanity for man to dye hair and wear high shoes when women do it all the time. I feel that people make excuses like men are supposed to own their looks when the double standards are pointed out but I do not see why.

I didn’t say anything about women so please don’t accuse me double standards. Point here is that this is Depp who himself and many people act as if hes above it all and oh so devil may care ( he may have been like that in his youth). So i was just pointing out he is wearing lifts as big as Tom Cruise, he colours his hair meticulously and sometimes in close ups you can see that he is wearing foundation and make up. He clearly makes an effort, was my point. I didn’t say that in itself is necessarily bad or that its not ok for men to do it. It was a direct response to someone who suggested he makes no effort, which clearly isn’t true.

In every photo of this premiere (or in general) that I’ve seen she comes across as so thirsty — in pics with Eddie & Alicia, she’s trying to be front and center as if she’s the lead of the film.
I mostly agree re: menswear on women. It takes a certain woman to pull off the androgynous menswear look. Amber is surely not that woman. And a tie almost always pushes it over into costumey territory.

I love her suit, much more than Angelina’s – the pattern keeps it fun. I also like the makeup, but the hair should have been more polished.

I really like what Eddie and his wife are wearing – they look great together and I love that he has a sense of humour. I even like Alicia’s dress especially since it has pockets but it looks like a sack on her. She needs some lip colour or something. She’s bland and I find her boring in everything I’ve seen her in.

Lizzie, it’s not that he looks old, we all age and that’s fine with me. But he looks unhealthy! Pale and bloated and miserable. Plenty of men his age look much, much better. He should invest in a good suit and have a professional take care of his health, diet and fitness. I would NOT let my husband walk around looking like this, especially since they have more money than they know what to do with. I see other issues at play here and it makes me sad for him.

They do not have scenes to shoot. The director has posted many times about how the film is going through post production stages. There’s a reason Johnny hasn’t taken out his Sparrow teeth but it’s not more scenes.

Random thoughts as I wait for contractors during a freeze (bear with me, Universe):
1) It could just be me, but Amber and Johnny BOTH look like they’ve got some serious alcohol bloat going on, not just him. I can’t help but think that’s not a happy marriage at all. And that suit is a nightmare on her. The tie is just awful. Johnny is a mess and deserves no other acknowledgement at this point.
2) Alicia must not realize that she’s wasting prime campaigning opportunities dressing so abysmally and frowning all the time. She clearly wants it, but has no idea how to try to get it other than flashing a more famous boyfriend around. When I see pictures of her I feel like screaming “Smile! You’re beautiful, why do you always look so sad on the red carpet? You’re an actress, fake it!”
3) Eddie suit is dapper as f*ck, but ever since the trailer for this film I keep looking for feminine features and seeing makeup on him. It’s all I can see. I can’t seem to help it. Maybe that’s a good thing? Also, Hannah is clearly the best dressed of the three women, but she really needs to put her hair up with this dress. It’s too beach-y like this.
I love Eddie and his wife they seem so sweet. But her makeup is always so blah I would love to see her palette with more colour and a nice bright lipstick.

I was never a JD fan although I always thought he was a gorgeous man. At 40 he still looked about 25, but now at 50+ he suddenly looks 50+. He always looks so unhappy at these RC events. I wonder if he’d like to go into seclusion for about a year and emerge looking much like the Johnny of 5-6 years ago.
As for the ladies, Amber looks awful, Hannah is wearing one of those blowsy, cinched at the waist blah dresses and Alicia’s dress is nice from the neck to the knees. The bottom panel makes it look like a nightgown.
Hannah’s dress (and Eddie’s suit!) is the best but Alicia looks pretty too. I love a woman in a suit but Amber’s is too shiny for my taste and the hair (not to mention that thig she calls her husband) looks terrible!

He is still a very sweet and generous guy. He is always nothing but nice to his fans and everyone he works with.

Amber Heard is barely in this movie. There is no real reason for her to show up at premieres except to being Johnny Depp. Ben Whishaw is an in the movie more than Amber but he is never shown because he is not married to a Hollywood star.
Amber Heard’s suit is well enough. Everything else looks bad. Alicia Vikander still looks like someone forced her into a boring old lady dress while she was contemplating life’s sadness. I unapologetically love Redmayne and his wife is so cute.
Best dressed as always goes to Eddie. I mean he should just go ahead and win best dressed every general. I always thought guys didn’t have many choices unless they chose something ridiculous, but he makes every single thing he wears casual/dressy look polished & perfect. It’s one of my fav things about him bc I’m always in awe at how he does it! I would not love this suit on anyone but him!
I usually give all credit to any celeb’s red carpet style to their stylist, but I think Eddie may be one of the rare exceptions to the stylist rule – he always looks just as good wandering the streets of London or running the paparazzi gauntlet at an airport. Unless his stylist comes to his house and lays out his clothes, most of his style must be his own. So many celebs look like they just rolled out of bed (or an alley) when they aren’t working, I appreciate that Eddie always seems to make an effort, and he’s not afraid to wear something fashion-forward.
I read in one of Eddie’s interviews that he doesn’t have a stylist that he likes clothes a learning about them.

Amber, my goodness! What is up with her bizarre facial expressions? She has a different expression in every picture and yet she looks constipated or ready to cry in every single one. Is she unable to close her lips? I think part of the problem is she always has her lips open trying to look breathy but the affect is not sexy – it’s just odd.

Call me crazy but I don’t think Johnny looks nearly as bloated or puffy, esp. in the face, as he did a few months ago. His eyes, while tired, aren’t bloodshot. SO…baby steps? Quite why little miss thing is dragging him around to every premiere I don’t know, for a small part she could walk this carpet alone. It does feel to me like Johnny is just being led by her at this point, but I don’t blame her for him falling to the bottle of the wine barrel completely. He had fallen into pretty hardcore drinking again by all accounts towards the end of him and Vanessa, which seemed to culminate a couple of months ago.
He does look better to me, I don’t want to see him die young, so I’m not rooting against them as a couple if she’s had anything to do with getting him sober (may be wishful thinking on my part). I am a lifelong Johnny fan, I get and relate to why people are scornful of his mid-life crisis, but I’m not comfortable just calling him hideous all the time and slamming him. He has given me a lot of joy, especially in my younger years, and I will always root for him to rise above his demons and come to his senses, regardless of anything.

Poor ole Johnny he doesn’t look that hideous he has put on weight I agree but I can still see the old Johnny there. I’m not sure about Amber… Hopefully she’s a good influence on him but I feel sad he split with Vanessa they seemed like a great couple.

@KateBush Thanks! I liked him with Vanessa too. I just think so what if he’s a bit porky, maybe he’s overcompensating with food. I’d rather that than see him be ill. I’m not sure about her AT ALL but he seems pretty delicate right now, I’d rather he has someone than no one.
Eddie is darling, couldn’t agree more! Johnny has always worn ill fitting suits, I remember those oversized zoot suits of the 90’s – he just go away with it better when he was younger/slimmer.
Amber has never had anything to do with him quitting. He quit back when he and Vanessa split for his family. You can be certain Vanessa has said, those children aren’t staying in his care when he’s drunk/drugged out. Which is why they haven’t gone to see him on any of his last film shoots.
Also, he started working with the Hollywood Vampires around that time, they have a “sober” policy.
Amber has been drinking around him, with him, and from the looks of them, their into some drugs as well. This is Kate Moss era all over again.
@Liz: I know he was sober with Vanessa, and no doubt him falling off the wagon had a lot to do with their split. But he looked like a bloated mess for awhile before he even got with Amber. I’m not saying she wasn’t partying with him, but I do think her overriding ambition is to have her A list husband keeping her profile high, so I can see her having some motivation to keep him from going over the cliff, unlike some others.
I don’t think she is a Kate Moss party girl at ALL, at least not above her ambition. I think she played the “wild bisexual” card to get some buzz around her rather stale career, she has nailed Johnny down at his weakest moment in an unquestionable career climbing move. I think he looks better now than he has for awhile, the jaundiced look has retreated markedly. I think if there are drugs going on they are mild/taking the edge off the alcohol withdrawal type things (weed, a Quaalude, etc). Johnny is never going to be a 12 stepper, he thinks he’s too rock and roll for that, he thinks he’s Keith Richards. His version of sober has to be on his own terms.
Mrs. Darcy I do agree with you about your feelings on JD and how you support him….bravo to you. I only wish others would demonstrate those feelings when derogatory and insulting comments are written here about other celebrities. I understand it’s not called Celebitchy for nothing, so I’ve learned to take all insults about my favs with a grain of salt. IMO, people are not bashing JD indiscriminately but genuinely are concerned for his health and well being.
@suziekew: Thanks, I think there is a healthy mix of both going on. I don’t think a lot of the people saying “Eew he is disgustingly vile and going to die” were ever true fans, and that’s fine. I went through a phase of finding him a bit repulsive when he first got with Amber, now I just kind of feel sorry for him and hope he gets his sh*t together because I am sick of my favourite actors dying young. And this is coming from someone who as a teenager was obsessed with Johnny, who auditioned for my first play after I saw Edward Scissorhands because I was so inspired by how brave and bold he was. People forget, Johnny was the hottest, most beautiful young man, he could have so easily had a Brad Pitt career, a Tom Cruise career, but he always marched to the beat of his own drum.
He obviously has always had demons, which he beat for awhile, for quite a long while, and I do think the lack of any empathy is kind of sad. Of course he is a cliche, a mid life crisis, a multi-millionaire so why should we care when he acts like this? But I just think of RDJ and how much people worship and adore him now, and yes, he got his sh*t together younger, but that was after a couple of jail stints and hardcore drug addiction. Alcoholism is more insidious. Some alcoholics, like Johnny it would seem, think they can handle it themselves. The way he would talk about drinking wine instead of Jack Daniels a few years ago, you just knew it was still there. I have had a lot of alcoholics in my family, so I don’t know, maybe that is why I do feel for him despite everything. Because alcohol is a killer, it is what killed Amy Winehouse and numerous other celebrities more associated with drug use.

Eddie was actually starstruck when he met Johnny on Toronto and he is a big fan so they seem to get along pretty well.

Amber is swollen in the face and seems to have oil on her face, she has no ass and chest, the suit was horrible, and the hair was that?
Tragic, definitely tragic – on all fronts. And that includes Redmayne’s plaid suit, which makes him look like he’s still a fresher at Eton. Redmayne’s wife, on the other hand, is the only person who really looks great. Beautiful gown. Vikander looks twelve. But they all pale next to how utterly awful the once staggeringly beautiful Depp looks. It’s heartbreaking.
I like the suit AH is wearing, but her styling is awful. Has she done something (fillers?) to her face? I mean, aside from the awful make-up job, her face looks really odd.

She looks okay but wth happened to Johnny. He used to ugly himself up, but it now appears that is his natural look.
Does Johnny Depp have issues about his height? Google says he is a perfectly respectable 5’9″ or 5’10” and those shoes look like creepers more than lifts, IMO.

I think this is a plot by Amber. Fatten up Johnny so he’ll have a heart attack and die. Then, not only does she get all his money, but she can milk the grieving widow scenario for a while (more interviews and magazine covers).
I love Alicia’s dress. I think she looks perfect for a young actor who is trying to look good but not be overly sexualized.
I agree. I think she usually goes for a more bohemian, not overly glamorous style and most often she carries it of well. In this case though, the fit of the dress is very poor. Still a beautiful woman.
Alicia Vikander is pretty but nothing more than that. I saw her in 3 movies and she didn’t make an impression – drove me nuts in U.N.C.L.E. , she was so bland. No idea where the hype is coming from. LV should stick to purses, btw, their dresses are atrocious.
I couldn’t agree more, her LV dresses either just look terrible on her or look terrible period. This one I think would look better on someone else.
Have you seen Danish Girl? I agree with you that she was merely okay in Man from UNCLE and Royal Affair, but she really is good in Danish Girl. I saw it at TIFF and I am not a superfan, but she holds her own against Redmayne in this one.
I think all three ladies look lovely but I am very concerned about Johnny Depp’s health. I recently exited a relationship with the love of my life due to his alcoholism. My ex was bloated all over his body due to his cirrhosis/liver failure. My ex looked very similar to how Johnny Depp looks now, which is why I am worried for him. Good wishes going out to JD.

I actually give points to Johnny for showing up at Amber’s events, whoever the instigator here. Why are women expected to show up for their SOs but not vice versa?
but if she loved him, she’d let him stay home. He has said so many times these events give him anxiety, push him to drink, and make him just plain miserable. He HAS to go to his, but hers? She should put on her big Independent panties and say “stay home honey, I got this.” She is perfectly capable of doing her job without holding his hand, did it for many, many years. But then, if he wasn’t there….she wouldn’t get half the attention she does. So logic deducts, she’s a selfish fame whore.
And I really don’t see any double standard to this… all the time men are with their women on red carpets. All the time. Though I’m sure some women just don’t feel the need to have their man hold their hand while they do their job. Maybe the men should stop needing arm candy so damn much. It’s work, not a date night.

Imagine: you spend decades basically unable to take a bad photo. Didn’t shower, don’t like the dentist? Doesn’t matter. Everyone calls you the sexiest man alive anyway. You avoid the plastic surgery pitfalls, keep doing what you’ve always done, you’re the same (apparently kind, generous) human being on the inside, and then suddenly… people are recoiling in horror at your appearance.
Poor Johnny. Plus I don’t think he even knows that Amber Heard is going to break his heart someday.
Yes, Johnny looks god awful. Old, pasty, chubby and astoundingly pathetic with Amber. As if we don’t all know he left his family and broke apart his childrens’ home so he could get at that strange, young pu$$

He didn’t leave his family and break apart his children’s home, him and his ex broke up amicably and they are on good terms now. His children actually get along very well with Amber .
Isn’t Amber in it for just two minutes? I’m sure she’s thirsty to be there, but the producers/marketers probably asked her to bring Johnny. All three are very boringly dressed.
Amber is not in the film for long. I doubt she would be attending the premieres but for her marriage to Johnny Depp.
every actor in the film gets to attend the premiere. however would she be getting to go to Venice, TIFF and do press for it without her link to Depp and the attention it draws. Nope.
I like how Alicia, as a pretty woman, chooses not to wear tacky, oversexualized clothes, but this dress does nothing for her. It doesn’t help that she’s next to Amber, who’s stunning (although a bit bloated).
Eddie looks weird as usual, but his wife is beautiful and her dress looks great on her. I wonder if she’s a Colbie Caillat’s lost sister.
