Kaley Cuoco got a moth tattoo to cover up her anniversary tatt: ugly or fine?

Just after her New Year’s Eve wedding in 2013, Kaley Cuoco memorialized her anniversary date with Roman numerals tattooed on top of her shoulder blades. She had “XII” (12), “XXXI” (31), “XIII” (13) put on and during various events for the past two years, she’s proudly displayed those tattoos. But since splitting with Ryan Sweeting, I guess Kaley didn’t want the visual reminder. And I guess lasering the tattoos wasn’t an option. So Kaley just had an ugly moth tattooed OVER the Roman numerals:

kaley2

Hideous, right? Kaley posted that photo and another one on her Instagram on Tuesday, writing: “Thank you @nero_sct @studiocitytattoo for helping me right my wrongs.. note to self- do not mark your body with any future wedding dates #under30mistakes #donttakeyourselftooseriouslykids.” Under-30 mistakes… hm. Is that a thing? I think “under 30 mistakes” should be like “whoops, I should have invested in that stock earlier” or “I really shouldn’t have had a one-night stand with that guy.” An under-30 mistake is “whoa, I should not have gotten that pixie cut.” An under-30 mistake is not moving in with a guy on the first date, getting engaged to him a month later and then trying to convince the world that it’s not all just some stupid rebound from Henry Cavill.

She also wrote: “@nero_sct the deep, meaningful, larger than life meaning behind this beautiful piece of ink, is….. It covered the last one.” At least she’s honest about that.

I agree with you Kaiser, I am glad that she at least admitted to the tattoo mistake.

But…with that being said, it’s an ugly tattoo. IMO

    • Chaucer says:

Agreed. Coverups are fine but that is not a good moth. That line work is 50 shades of jenky. Yikes.

    • Mia V. says:

She could’ve tattoed an emoji, since it’s all about mistakes.

    • LA Juice says:

I get a total silence of the lambs vibe here…. CLARICE!

    • SydneySnider says:

A moth. A MOTH. Of all the beautiful imagery available, this dill chooses a moth. She’s sillier than I thought.

      • LeAnn Stinks says:

Well according to Native American Animal Totems the moth represents “the power of the whirlwind, ease of movement in darkness/shadow,transformation/metamorphosis, ability to confuse enemies, ability to find light in darkness, hearing spoken and unspoken messages.”

Not sure if that was her intent or not, but regardless, it is not an attractive tattoo. She would have been better off trying to turn the numerals into letters.

  2. Lora says:

Ugly… Would have been better to laser it off

    • Loulou says:

I wondered why she didn’t laser it off!

    • Scal says:

Lasering doesn’t really work. It’s more painful than the actual tattoo, it’s a lot of sessions, and while the darkness of the ink will fade (which is not a guarantee, for many people it just turns gray), most people tend to scar from the laser. It’s better to cover it up as you know that will work.

I had a friend try to get her lasered off and it didn’t work. She ended up getting a very nice tattoo over it, but you can still see the scar tissue from the laser job.

      • Wren says:

Well, it works, as in the ink is removed, but you’re left with a scar in the rough shape of the old tattoo. Some people scar more visibly than others, so it’s a toss up whether it’ll fade into obscurity or forever be a nasty scar.

A friend had a rose tattooed on her boob that she got lasered off, which left her with a rose shaped scar on her boob. In my opinion, it wasn’t an improvement.

      • qwerty says:

Scar as in white patch with no pigment? Cause that can be filled in with flesh coloured tattoo. Permanent makeup people do these.

      • Loulou says:

Gosh I had no idea. I really thought laser just took it away, magic eraser style. Haha!

      • Eden75 says:

        @qwerty:

Some people just get white areas but a lot of people end up with bad scarring. A friend of mine is prone to keloid scarring and the dermatologist told her not to even consider laser as she would more than likely end up with a massive lump of scar tissue.

    • Elisa the I. says:

I got a tattoo when I was 17 on my upper-arm and I tried to laser it off 3 years ago. I had 6 sessions which were painful as hell – I had blisters all over the tattoo afterwards because the skin got burnt. The tattoo is still there, only the colors are not as intense as before – and the tat is now over 15 yrs old! Luckily I did not get any scars. The dermatologist used one of the newest lasers. So in my experience it does not work at all. I already have a design for a cover-up but there are very few tattoo artists who are good at it. I found one and I have to wait one (!) year for an appointment. O_o

    • LeAnn Stinks says:

That would have been the most sensible decision.

  3. JRenee says:

    I’ve seen worse…

  4. Selena Castle says:

I don’t mind it. Looks like a decent cover up, and if she likes moths…

  5. Crumpet says:

No, I think it’s totally cool! I love moths! What a great idea. I’ve been wanting a tattoo, but butterflies are so over done. A little moth would be perfect.

  6. Lilacflowers says:

Why not just go with Wino Forever?

  7. Loopy says:

She could have easily lasered the first tattoos, they weren’t that elaborate .

    • Brittney B. says:

Doesn’t that hurt, though? I’ve heard it’s painful and takes a long time. Maybe she wasn’t willing to deal with multiple painful appointments.

      • Franny says:

It hurts like a bitch – worse than the tattoo. The process I’m doing is that every 6 weeks you go in for lasering – it takes like 4-6 sessions to make it go away. I’m hoping I only have one left because I can’t take the pain anymore. Maybe she just wanted to get it over with?

    • Scal says:

Like I said above, there’s a risk of scar tissue (and it doesn’t always work). I’d rather cover it than have a scar of roman numerals on my back.

      • CL says:

But wouldn’t having a scar of your wedding date tattoo be more meaningful than a cover up? You could call it your divorce scar. An external one.

  8. CK says:

I hope she likes moths. I don’t see how this becomes anything other than another reminder of her anniversary/prior marriage though if it has no other significance than being a cover up.

    • Loopy says:

Excellent point, I always think cover up tattoos are even more meaningful than the original lol

    • Wren says:

Tattoos don’t really HAVE to have meaning, though. As long as it’s an image you enjoy, it doesn’t really matter if it means anything beyond that. My tattoos have very little meaning in and of themselves, as in the actual images are simply things I enjoy and don’t have a complicated story behind them.

  9. Murphy says:

Its better than keeping the date on there.

  10. Brittney B. says:

Ugh, after all the beautiful tattoos I’ve seen… it’s tragic that someone with so much money would settle for such a basic, cheap-looking piece. She could have commissioned hundreds of talented artists in LA, but went with Clip-Art instead. Just search for “moth tattoo” on Google Images… so many examples of fine line work, three-dimensional shading, unique wing patterns, etc.

    • qtpi says:

Agree with this. She is loaded. This feels like she rushed it. Woke up one day and ran to nearest Tat shop. Not a lot of research or thought put into it.

I would have attempted removal first. No matter how painful.

  11. dr mantis toboggan says:

Eh, I give her and the moth 12 months, 18 tops.

  12. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

This is why you don’t get a tattoo. But if you must, I thought the moth looked better than those dumb dates.

  13. Sway says:

It’s not as bad as Scarlett Johansson’s “Lucky you” tattoo… but it’s still pretty bad. It’s a cover up, all the way. The line is not very clear. It’s not proportional, it’s not balanced. And it’s an INSECT. I mean, ew. Insects crawl and are downright creepy, at least in my eyes.

Good luck to Kaley though and big admiration for her courage to own up to her mistakes and go on bravely.

  14. Liz says:

It might look better in colour? It’s a pretty big cover up tattoo.

  15. Sally J. Freedman says:

The body looks like a penis.

  16. kri says:

I love the dog she is hugging. That’s all.

  17. emmyb1608 says:

Meh… her body, her choice. Not sure why she’s had to tell the world she’s had a cover up though?

  18. serena says:

How can she’ll cover up that ugly moth now, is the real question.

  19. lobbit says:

    A giant moth? Ghastly.

  20. Cupcake says:

Moths are super creepy! Bad call!

  21. Dawn says:

She really just needed to leave it. It is now part of her life and if it was a mistake big deal, those are part of our lives as well.

  22. stinky says:

was she the moth who got burned?

  23. kimbers says:

    Retro moth

  24. Green Is Good says:

    Wow, that’s a big tatt.

  25. holly hobby says:

That sucker is huge! The numbers weren’t even that big. Couldn’t she get something more tasteful and discreet to cover the numbers up? On the other hand, moths make me think Silence of the Lambs. Hope she enjoys that on her back.

  26. dread pirate cuervo says:

Did the tattoo artist ink that with his/her eyes closed?

  27. Cerulean Skygirl says:

I’ve seen some amazing tattoo cover ups…. and this isn’t one of them. Oh my gosh, could she have picked something uglier? A MOTH? How about doing a beautiful 3D butterfly, or a big flower… or ANYTHING. Moths serve no purpose except to be obnoxious during picnics or evening BBQs. Well, that’s just my opinion. Maybe she has a moth obsession. It definitely looks like the tattoo artist was phoning it in, though.

  28. Mela says:

I don’t know how celebrities have so much money and get such bad tattoos. That cover-up is absolutely horrible. The line work is inconsistent and WTF with that extra dark line at the bottom. It’s huge when her first tattoo wasn’t and the position seems off. It’s just so bad, and I’ve seen some absolutely beautiful moth tattoos. It’s not the worst celebrity tattoo ever, but it’s still really ugly.

  29. rice_bunny says:

Sorry I can’t help it, but if you cover the top half of that moth tattoo…it totally looks like something very phallic!

  30. taxi says:

Moths are unattractive, to me. Reminds me of every cashmere garment lost to moth-hunger. She has some strange marks/scars on her back.

  31. Heat says:

The tattoo is all kinds of ugly, no doubt.
But can we talk about all the scratches she has on her back? Has she been running amok in some thorny briar?

  32. neelyo says:

Under 30??? Ever since she got that haircut all I see is a 40+ mom, haggard from running her kids all over town.

  33. Amy M. says:

Question about lasers: I’ve had laser hair removal done on my face quite a few times. It’s not a comfortable procedure but my dermatologist had a numbing cream available to help with the sting which did help. Also laser hair removal does not permanently get rid of hair but it does reduce the amount of hair so I’ve had to touch ups over the years. Is the tattoo removal laser the same kind used for hair removal or is it different?

  34. Paris says:

    Ugly, ugly, ugly tatoo!
What about laser tattoo removal? No?
