Tim Gunn’s #1 Fashion Rule: ‘Don’t dress like a Kardashian. It’s vulgar, period.’

FFN_RIJ_HUMANITARIAN_AWARDS_102513_51243833

The word I keep using with regards to Tim Gunn is “glorious.” The man is glorious. Gunn really doesn’t care who he alienates, and he’s about two seconds away from giving Anna Wintour a rage-stroke. In the past six months, he’s saved his most serious (and hilarious) insults for the Kardashian-Jenner clan though. Over the summer, Us Weekly handed him Kim Kardashian’s coffee table book, Selfish, and Tim went OFF. He called it “disgusting and vile” and said he felt like his IQ was “plummeting” just by looking at it. Then, in November, Gunn once again slammed the family, saying their style was “vulgar” and that Kanye West’s Adidas collection was a bunch of “dumb clothes.” Well, the NYDN spoke to Tim over the weekend and he had so much more to say.

On Kanye West’s clothes: “I’m on record having said (his fashions) are basic, what a dear friend of mine Grace Mirabella (former editor in Chief of Vogue) calls, dumb clothes. It’s not fashion. They’re dumb clothes and they’re expensive, dumb clothes. I’ve always said the only thing dumber than his clothes is the people who buy them.”

Tim Gunn’s #1 Fashion Rule: “I’m always saying to young people and actually even to adults, I don’t care what you wear as long as you don’t dress like a Kardashian. It’s vulgar, period. But that’s what they are. I believe that their place in history will be because of this phenomenon that really is about nothing. And aren’t people getting bored of it?”

Caitlyn or Kylie Jenner? “I don’t like any of (their style choices). It’s all the same. Then to read a headline ‘Learn Caitlyn Jenner’s beauty secrets!‘ She’s a kid! I mean Kylie sorry. I get all the K’s confused. And I want to say this about Caitlyn. I have the greatest respect for what she has done and been through, but no I’m not a fan of the style.”

He was “horrified” when Caitlyn won Glamour’s WOTY Award and said that the most difficult decision a woman has to make in the morning is what to wear: “I thought, really? I think if you asked most other women that it’s not going to be on the tip of their tongue. She’s like a dizzy broad. Actually I love that. She’s a dizzy broad.”

[From The NYDN]

That’s actually a dead-on assessment of Caitlyn Jenner, she is a dizzy broad. And to confuse Kylie with Caitlyn? Priceless! As for Tim’s #1 Fashion Rule: Don’t Dress Like A Kardashian… I can see that. I mean, that’s a good rule of thumb for any stylist/fashionista. Is it a trash-bag looking Givenchy? Don’t dress like a Kardashian. Will this onesie make me look like Humpty Dumpty? Don’t dress like a Kardashian. Should I wander around New York looking like a morose refugee? Don’t wear Kanye’s dumb clothes.

This is fantastic, he is really growing on me. I couldn’t help but spit out my drink with laughter, made my early morning.

    • Loulou says:

Tim Gunn injects sanity into today’s gossip cycle.

      • JFresh says:

+1 It actually almost literally makes my jaw drop when I read the boldness of the things he dares to say. He must have immensely solid respect within the industry to be able to get away with saying the things he does, and still go on being so admired and well-positioned, right? An excellent role model to have in the media.

    • ERM says:

I was not really a fan of his but he’s so right. I ask this at least once a day but seriously why do people follow this family? At a loss….

    • Katie says:

Me too. Normally I find him grating but anyone who feels as strongly against the Kardashians as I do is okay with me.

  2. Talie says:

    A dizzy broad! LMAO…

    • CooCooCatchoo says:

Catelyn is a privileged white lady. Her transition seemed to be easier than most. She has money, and could afford to hole up in her Malibu home until she felt confident enough to go public. But she’s sounded more shallow and self-centered since her official coming out. The Kardashians have definitely influenced her idea of femininity. But I think she looks amazing, and her wardrobe is kickin.’ She dresses 10x better than Kim, Khloe, Kylie and Kris. But North is giving her a run for her money – motorcycle jacket, ballet tutu and Doc Martins = amazing ❤️

  3. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I love Tim, and I agree with his rule. Although, I couldn’t afford to dress like a Kardashian even if I wanted to, which I don’t.

    • vauvert says:

I bow to Tim and think he is indeed glorious.
GNAT, if you ever want to go as a K for Halloween I will help tape you into a layer of plastic bags adorned with shoelaces, with holes on the side. I will even stuff padding down your top and under your skirt and put on your choker. We can slick your hair down after we part it in the middle with some grease, and pour a bottle of bronzer on you and rub it in. There, done. We can get the whole look accomplished for less than $20.

    • LadyMTL says:

As a general rule of thumb, if a Kardashian would wear it / endorse it / create it / glance at it, I will run away from it. They may have buttloads of money (pun intended) but they do not have taste.

      • CL says:

You’re right on that! It’s “WWKD?”, and then don’t do that.

(That would be What Would Kardashian/Kanye/Caitlyn Do? Yes, I know Caitlyn isn’t a “K”, just go with it).

  4. Mrs. Wellen Melon says:

Tim Gunn, you silver fox. Gentlemen, this is how it’s done right.

The Kardashian Jenner West Kircus is all spangled klown klothes and freak show. All empty kalories.

  5. Sullivan says:

    Hear! Hear!

  6. Mikeyangel says:

And the fashion gods have spoken!

  7. Lucy says:

He is indeed glorious. And despite what Dita Von Teese says (I like Dita a lot btw), I don’t he’s jealous of them in the least. If anything, it should be the other way around.

    • Lindy79 says:

A pet peeve of mine is the “you’re just jealous” argument when you don’t like someone.

Sometimes you just don’t like them….because they’re a vacuous a-hole in the Kardashians case.

    • Dani says:

Wait, Dita said Tim Gunn is just… *jealous*… of the Kardashians? I love Dita, but she needs to have a seat and recognize that Tim Gunn is both glorious and very, very right. The Kardashians are the epitome of vulgar, and that extends well beyond what they wear.

  8. Tifygodess24 says:

The man is spot on. I can’t help but feel that people in the future will look back at this time -where dizzy people like the Kardashians “ruled”, and ask if we were all on some serious drugs? Because how else could we have allowed this to happen. Famous for being famous, excessive and vulgar.

  9. Lk says:

Tim Gunn has just Rem Acu Tetigistied the whole thing.

  10. Talita says:

    Love this man!

  11. Kiki says:

I love Tim Gunn. Thank you for saying it like you mean it and what I have been saying it for a long time. You sir, have fabulous taste.

  12. Size Does Matter says:

Love. Him. And even when it isn’t flat out vulgar, it’s ugly.

  13. D says:

I love Tim Gunn, I really do. He should have his own show where he just gives his opinion on random things.

  14. aims says:

I watched Tim’s review on Kim’s stupid book over and over again because it was so funny!!!

I adore Tim and he’s always spot on in his observations. He’s always honest and I love him!!

  15. Sam says:

Dolly Parton has always said that it takes a ton of money to look that cheap. She wasn’t talking about the K family when she said it, but she was right on the money.

  16. Cameron says:

    Boom.

  17. GingerCrunch says:

The man is a NATIONAL TREASURE!!!

  18. kitty orchid says:

I have always thought that, with the exception of Caitlyn, the Kardashian-Jenner women all dress as if they are hookers. What’s even more baffling to me is that their clothing costs a fortune, yet the end result is that they look like “call girls”. Never before has so much money been spent to look so trashy.

  19. minx says:

Tim Gunn is God. Love him.

  20. Algernon says:

His next book should be called “Tim Gunn Goes ALL IN.”

  21. Cupcake says:

    This really made me LOL!!

  22. LAK says:

The Kardashians represent one way of dressing. If that’s your thing, irrespective of whether you are copying or following the Ks, or vice versa, do your thing.

    That’s fashion.

  23. Lilacflowers says:

    Tim Gunn for President

  24. Dawn says:

Tim tells the truth and does NOT apologize for it. How can one NOT love that? I know I almost fell over when West got an award for his awkward looking shoes. I thought maybe he bought it for himself or maybe those people are just dumb. Thanks Tim for telling it like it is without fear of Kris Jenner’s claws coming out against you.

  25. Mila says:

He is awesome! I love him.

  26. AntiSocialButterfly says:

    Ah hahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Tim Gunn just called Kanye a basic b1tch!!

    Perfectly glorious!

  27. Dena says:

Wish more people were like him. Tim Gunn for the president

  28. jammypants says:

I’d love to sit down and have a drink with Mr. Gunn. He’s a riot.

  29. tracking says:

    Word.

  30. Charlotte15 says:

Any story involving quotes from Tim makes my day. Adore him.

I’m enjoying thinking about Kanye off somewhere FUMING over this 😂

  31. Malificent says:

Dizzy broad pretty much nails it. Caitlyn was always self-absorbed before in her previous incarnation as Bruce. And she’s still crazy self-absorbed in her new public identity — although I’m willing to cut her some slack on that. When people go through a major life-change of any sort — they typically go through a second adolescence where it’s all new to them.

But what is really noticeable about Caitlyn is that she’s gotten her day-to-day experiences about what it means to be a woman from her ex-wife and daughters. She’s spent the last several decades among women who think that dressing like a tart, being uneducated or lacking any solid career goal, and fame-whoring is the norm. I think Caitlyn has formed her ideas of what being a woman is based on this lifestyle.

I don’t cut her complete slack though. As a parent, of any gender, you are also responsible for seeing that your children have a wholesome and solid grounding — which clearly did not happen in the Kardashian-Jenner household. I think despite the occasional comment, she let PMK go off like a runaway train with their kids.

    • outhousecat says:

No way am I giving him any kind of pass. He presumably had a mother who would have been the first female influence on him, and there was probably a grandmom or two there, also. Then he dated and married numerous women before he settled in with the Klowns. Maybe he started liking their “me me me” more money than God lifestyle and tossed away his primary idea of womanhood at some point, who knows? But it was his decision to emulate those idiots. He could have chosen to be a decent person (man or woman) but he chose entitlement and as Tim said, vulgar, instead.

  32. FrenchGirlChi says:

That made me spit out my coffee… Love Tim’s Assessment

  33. Minxx says:

It’s a good rule to live by. They all look like hookers, which is not surprising, given the way Kim’s career got started. I never watched their show and make a point not to read anything Kardashian-related but Tim’s comments are priceless. I’m surprised nobody makes Kardashian Halloween costumes.

  34. NeNe says:

AMEN!!!!! That is unless you’re going for the vulgar, trashy wh*rish look!!

  35. Lisa says:

I laughed through the whole thing and completely agree! Thank goodness he just says what he feels and doesn’t cower away.

  36. kri says:

I want to wear Tim Gunn. I am so in love with his Imperial Declarations and every word out of him in this article is truth and genius. he is some sort of Oscar Wilde incarnation for me. Adore!!

  37. JRenee says:

    Team Tim!

  38. Snazzy says:

I loved everything about this. Everything!

  39. Vesta says:

” I mean Kylie sorry. I get all the K’s confused.” Ha ha, just brilliant.

  40. Tiffany :) says:

I love Tim, but I’d love to hear more of his thoughts on non-K-Klan topics! Just mentioning them kind of feeds the beast, you know?

  41. me says:

Could you please stop putting down refugees? Sorry, but refugees have bigger problems than to worry about their wardrobes. Also, would just like to mention not all refugees are poor. They are escaping a war torn country. A country with many poor but also many rich.

With regarding Tim Gunn, he said something negative about the Kardashians once before and then backtracked and apologized a few days later. Stick to your words Tim !

  42. QQ says:

Bae Gunn Continues to be Bae, i adore him

  43. Jwoolman says:

He’s like the little kid in The Emperor Has No Clothes….

Amazingly, he doesn’t really sound mean when he says such things.

Although I think Caitlyn dresses far better than the K Klan in general, and Kylie wears some casual stuff that looks good. Likewise for Kourtney. But the stuff they peddle and wear formally is pretty bad.

  44. Michelle says:

Tim Gunn for President!! He would stroke out if he ever walked into my workplace and saw the folks around here. Nude leggings. I’m serious. NUDE FREAKIN” LEGGINGS!!!! Need I say more?

  45. outhousecat says:

I totally read “wander around New York like a MOOSE refugee.” It made me snort even though it makes no sense at all. But Kim does look like a moose, always. The refugee part is just gravy.

  46. Lbliss says:

    I’m standing up and applauding!!!

  47. Debutante says:

I love it. Caitlyn kenner..dumb as dirt !
I have always loved Tim Gunn. The man knows his clothes !! I wish he could dress me !

  48. raincoaster says:

He really captured Caitlyn Jenner in those two simple words. Great words. He’s a truly great critic, and that’s why he’s such a delight.

I’ve always felt that the Kardashian model of femininity would be the LAST one i’d choose if I were trans, starting out as a woman. They all look like pricy Romanian hookers.

  49. nicole says:

I love his comment on KAN-yes clothing line, he is going to be fuming at that.

  50. KCAT says:

    I heart Tim Gunn
