Lupita Nyong’o in Alexandre Vauthier at the ‘Star Wars’ premiere: amazing?

wenn23282834

We’re going to have a lot of Star Wars premiere photos, because last night’s LA premiere was HUGE. They basically shut down LA to throw this mega-premiere. Guess who was the best-dressed woman of the night? Lupita Nyong’o, of course!

Lupita wore this Alexandre Vauthier gown which sparkled like “the galaxy” (her words). She also wore more than 30 carats of Chopard jewels, including a “a pear-shaped emerald and diamond ring as well as breathtaking fancy-cut diamond earrings.” Honestly, I had to stop myself from downloading about 50 photos of Lupita’s face just because her face is perfect. I love everything! I love her lipstick, I love the jewelry, I love her hair, I love the gown, I love that the whole vibe is Star Wars-y AND Christmas-y. She’s so lovely.

Gwendoline Christie – who apparently spends the entire movie behind a chrome mask? – decided to go for high avant-garde glam in this Oscar de la Renta gown. I enjoy the fact that Gwendoline loves big gowns and high-drama fashion in her real life. She has the height and the bearing to pull off a lot of those looks. While this de la Renta gown isn’t my favorite thing in the world, I love the way she’s wearing it: like a QUEEN.

The bare sides on Lupita’s dress do her no favors. Bare bulges of scarred skin are unsightly.

    Gwendolyn’s dress is more becoming.

    • Norman Bates's Mother says:

What do you mean by scarred? I don’t see any scars or anything remotely “unsightly” about her looks. Those little white dots on her skin are just sparkles from her dress.

The only thing I’d change are those black straps – the material looks cheap.

      • Louise177 says:

@Norman: I was going to say the same about the straps. Maybe if they were thinner or the same sparkle of the dress it would look so much better. I’d give the dress a 9/10.

@Taxi: You’re horrible. If the spots were scars how disgusting of you to say they are unsightly and should be covered. Most people are not perfect so saying they should hide any blemishes is sad and pathetic on your part.

      • Wentworth Miller says:

Agree about the black straps. They take away from the dress. Especially the one around her waist.

      • sunglasses aready says:

Shame about the straps. But everything else is perfection.

    • BearcatLawyer says:

I don’t think those are scars on Lupita’s skin near the bands. It looks like prisms thrown by flashbulbs reflecting off of the mirrors and crystals on her gown.

    • silken_floss says:

What the hell are you looking at, because I don’t see any ‘scarred skin’. Your thinly veiled attempt to insult Lupita failed.

      • taxi says:

Chill out. I didn’t realize, as those more helpful pointed out, that the “marks” are reflections from the dress.
If I had meant to insult anyone, it would be overt, not “thinly veiled.”

      • Tash says:

@taxi – Even if those are scars it’s still insulting to call it unsightly. God forbid someone shows a bit of “imperfect” skin. She should wear bruka-type outfit because I can also see “scars” on her face.

    • TheSageM says:

The reflection of the sequins on her skin make it look like she has spots of scarring or discoloration.

    • Mgsota says:

What a rude comment Taxi. Those aren’t scars it’s the reflection from her dress. And if it were scarring she shouldn’t have to cover them up because scars are “unsightly.”
My teen daughter has a large heart surgery scar and I never want her to feel embarrassed or ashamed or feel she needs to hide it. Luckily it doesn’t seem to phase her.

      • taxi says:

Glad your daughter’s surgery was successful and she is unfazed by any visible signs of her triumph. Sorry you were offended – I didn’t know that what I thought looked like old bug-bites or ?? are actually reflections. You & others have pointed out my error. This had nothing to do with any surgical scars, which are generally regarded as signs of triumph.

      • Lara says:

I was just going to reply that I have a large heart surgery scar and should I have to hide it away? In fact after a few years of hiding it ( surgery at 24 I’m now 31) I now make sure my hair doesn’t cover it and I wear clothes that if anything reveal it! That scar is the reason I’m here today and I show it with pride even if after a few drinks I may tell people I got into a knife fight. Please keep on telling your daughter to never be ashamed.

      • Mgsota says:

        Thanks Taxi…I appreciate your apology.

      • Mgsota says:

Lmao Lara! Glad you’re here! I had a scar on my neck from having lymph nodes removed (benign thank God) and when it was first bandaged I told people I was attacked by a mountain lion…joking of course.

My daughter doesn’t know any different. She had open heart surgery at 5 days old. But now that she’s in the teen years I worried maybe she’d be self conscious. I asked her if people comment about it. She said people ask her about it but no one has been negative. I tell her to be proud of it, it’s her battle scar and without she wouldn’t be here!
I was watching one of those bridal shows and the bride-to-be wanted to find a dress that hid her heart surgery scar. She was so worried about it showing. That made me sad.
        Keep rocking that scar Lara!

      • BearcatLawyer says:

Every injury I get is the result of a knife fight with Chuck Norris. I always win, of course. Chuck just cannot get over losing knife fights to a woman, I tell you!

    • Pandy says:

Didn’t notice any scars! But I love Lupita’s dress. I liked Daisy’s as well – very pretty. Gwendoline’s not as much but I still liked it.

    • V4Real says:

I get what @Taxi is saying. The sparkles on her arms and face do resembles scarring. If you enlarge the pictures you will even notice that some look like sparkles while others look like scarring. Zoom in on the second pic and look at her left arm. it doesn’t look like sparkles under the light of the cameras. We know they are not scarring because Lupita doesn’t have any visible scars. Oh, but I love her hair.

The sparkles distract from her look but the dress is a miss anyways. The black straps is a total fashion blunder.

    • The Eternal Side-Eye says:

I feel like you can see those are reflections from the sparkles from a mile away, unless some people started to have silver glittery scars.

  2. Sara says:

Two glorious women who carry off fashion so well; love these pictures !

  3. GlimmerBunny says:

Lupita’s look took my breath away. The perfect look for the season, the premiere and her!

  4. L says:

    Both look amazing

  5. zimmer says:

I want to love this b/c I love Lupita (and granted I didn’t see what it looked like on video), but the bands bother me on the dress, otherwise she looks great!

  6. vauvert says:

Gwen, you rock girl. Love her bold choices on the RC. She carries everything off. Not my favourite dress of hers but she can work it.

Lupita’s dress would have been glorious if not for the black band aids holding the sides together. WTF is that?? Her makeup looks good and yeah, the sparklers are awesome. Loved the earrings.

    • NUTBALLS says:

Gwen is a goddess. She as always looks striking on the red carpet.

I liked everything but the black bands on Lupita. Her face looks amazing, as always.

I saw the initial tweets from reviewers were positive. Looking forward to seeing this film.

    • Rainbow says:

I like the dress but the black bands and the silver eyeshadow aren’t my cup of tea. She looks gorgeous though.

The Oscar de la Renta dress has also black bands and i’ve noticed this too in some Gucci gowns so i guess they are a thing.

    • atrain says:

I don’t like the too-light bridesmaidy eyeshadow she has going on. She has a great face but her eye makeup is always too match-matchy to her dress and ruins the whole look.

  7. ell says:

i love alexandre vauthier, but this isn’t his best dress. it’s a good idea though. i also love oscar de la renta’s recent collections and i think gwen looks amazing in this dress.

    • tracking says:

co-sign. I want to love the Vauthier dress on Lupita, but the fit/silhouette seems off. So close. I agree GC looks lovely. Both women are gorgeous and look like they’re having a fabulous time!

  8. Nancy says:

Glad Lupita is getting some glory. After the Oscars, she was everyone’s darling and then of course they started throwing the diva word around. Hope she is everything and more in her movie and gets the recognition she deserves and isn’t a one hit wonder so to speak. She’s a beautiful woman.

  9. Lora says:

Don’t like the look and now I’m off hiding myself

  10. missmerry says:

I hate when the sparkles are all over womens faces, as beautiful as the dresses are.

It happened to Janelle Monae, too. I didn’t like her outfit quite as much, it was too stiff, even though she was prolly going for a breastplate-esque look.

  11. Santia says:

Loathe the dress; looks very cheap. Love the makeup. Her face looks amazing.

  12. SloaneY says:

Lupita’s is too disco ball for me, but I do like her jewelry. Normally, I probably would think meh on Gwen’s dress, but on her it’s totally rockin. She looks great.

  13. Vesta says:

I don’t understand those black gym lycra stripes in Lupita’s dress. I’m not a fan of the whole look either, it feels restless somehow.

  14. Megan says:

The black bits on both dresses wreck the flow on what could be elegance. They are eye sores in my opinion and look as if someone is wearing an athletic brace for a muscle injury.

  15. CornyBlue says:

Love the dress . Do not like whatever is near her chin area.

  16. DesertReal says:

Dude. I really really really hope that Brianne of Tarth is NOT the person behind the metallic Vader-esque mask in the trailers because I was really really REALLY looking forward to figuring it out for myself on Thursday night at 730. I mean…Spoiler Alert Warning might have been nice. Like damn.

    • cr says:

Do you mean the person who’s Kylo Ren? That’s not who Gwendolyn’s playing, she’s playing a stormtrooper, Captain Phasma, that’s not a spoiler.

      • DesertReal says:

No. I never said that. As apparent in the trailers, theres more than one character in a mask. One of them looks like a shiny storm trooper (aka chrome) and the other is Ren. When I watch a movie I like to be pleasantly surprised by the voices behind the masks- instead of just waiting for a certain actor or actress to make their appearance. Please don’t be so defensive about things you clearly don’t know anything about.

  17. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

They’re both gorgeous! I’m not sure where I saw it, but there’s a brief interview out on video of Gwen & she is SO hilarious. I could have watched at least an hour more of her talking.

  18. lobbit says:

    Man, Lupita is so pretty.

  19. Micki says:

    I like Lupita’s earrings.

  20. The Eternal Side-Eye says:

Oof Luptia’s skin tone, damn, she’s got fashion sense for days. Love everything about her outfit and yeah, she knocked this one out of the park.

  21. db says:

Love Lupita, hate those cheap looking cutouts. Gwendolyne is doing her usual aggressively unattractive gown thing again.

  22. Dani says:

This dress is doing her no favors, especially those bands.

  23. FingerBinger says:

Awful dresses. Those dresses don’t flatter their figures.

  24. Abbess Tansy says:

Beautiful women, cheap-looking dresses like they’re from the prom section at stores like Deb or Maurice’s.

  25. Gina says:

Not the best look for Lupita

  26. danielle says:

Lupita is pretty, but both dresses are awful.

  27. I Choose Me says:

I don’t like it. I don’t like those black bands. To me they ruin the outfit. Not sure about the hairstyle either. I love that she’s not afraid to switch it up but I don’t think this look is particularly flattering.

  28. analee says:

No, in fact I don’t find Lupita’s look “amazing.” I’ve actually never seen her look this bad–which is not to say she isn’t pretty, clearly she is, but I find her attractiveness to be (at least on Celebitchy) fairly overrated. (Same thing w Jennifer Lawrence, but even more so; to me she is only moderately attractive on a good day.) I dislike the sparkle encrusted dress on Lupita, to me it just looks really tacky, like something a little girl or a magpie would be drawn to for its overt, exaggerated shimmer–and the black bands on it are extremely unflattering, as well. I think Gwen’s dress is too overwhelmingly voluminous for even a tall woman to pull off, and she doesn’t. It’s so long that her head appears dwarfed and startled and discrepantly misplaced above it, I think. The tiered gown is far too heavy and long to make her appear elegant, statuesque, *or* comfortable–more like she just has to consciously drag it behind and around her whenever she walks; it seems like it would be annoying to have on. He dress sort of wears and leads her, in fact, and not the other way around.

    • V4Real says:

Watch out analee if you think Lupita is not that attractive you will be accused of not finding darker skin women attractive. I received one of those ignorant comments. Lupita is no where near ugly I just don’t think she’s as beautiful as some hype her up to be. But I am loving her hair game right now.

    • Mary-Alic says:

Absolutely. I’ve said it many times before. This woman gets so much praise one expects some fashion and acting dinosaur but she is neither. I dare say, and have said it before, that a big part of the praise is due to her being a minority and especially in Hollywood. I am not a fan of such favoritizing and stand by my words: she is not a great actress and she lacks even basic fashion sense. Not to start on her make up. There are many dark skinned talented women who surpass her any day. Her clothing choices are tragic and her everyday style is painfully kitch. IMO.

P.S. And I think exactly the same way about the current darling Jennifer Lawrence, before someone comes to preach about race, colour and such.

  29. maggie says:

Looks like someone painted a clown face on her. I don’t like the make up. The dress is just ok.

  30. Original T.C. says:

Lupita is so gorgeous I could stare at her face for hours. Charlize Theron and Elizabeth Taylor are the few other women I would add to the stare-all-day list!

  31. A. O. says:

Oh mercy. “Spends the movie behind a mask” might need a spoiler warning for those of us who have to wait till next week to see it because kids and babysitters. LOL

  32. Penelope says:

Lupita is breathtakingly lovely. What a beautiful woman.

  33. kri says:

Lupita made my day. Good lord, lady! Leave a little hot for the rest of us!!!

  34. Breakfast Margaritas says:

Lupitas looking a tad bit more bootylicious in this dress (to borrow Beysus term). Maybe it’s the polyester sweat bands on the dress. Maybe if the band’s had been a different color it may have worked. This color is not a striking contrast against her beautiful rich skin and comes off as dull cheap sweat bands.

  35. Farhi says:

Not a fan of body tight dresses even on women with perfect bodies. They look extremely uncomfortable.

  36. kibbles says:

I never thought that Lupita had great fashion sense. She makes daring choices, but I have seen her wear so many awful dresses in the last several years. Even though this is one of her better ones, I don’t think it looks all that great. I dislike the midsection and would have preferred if there had not been any cutouts or black straps.

  37. Danskins says:

Lupita looks gorgeous as always. Love both dresses!

  38. MB says:

wow, that dress would have been amazing if it werent for those awful straps! Its not just that the fabric is out of place with the rest of the dress, its that the fabric looks cheap and nasty, they look like an afterthought, and there is seaming right down the middle of each of the straps which seem both unnecessary and also out of alignment with the seams on the other straps. Good lord, what a disaster!

I adore Gwendolyn’s dress, though. Very dramatic.

  39. KCAT says:

I LOVE the dress! Lupita is dazzling as usual. Her body looks amazing. Yes, Miss Gwedoline looks great as well. I’m happy for both of them.
