Costars Keri Russell & Matthew Rhys are expecting their first child together

Keri Russell’s first marriage fell apart in 2013 under a cloud of suspicion that she had gotten too close to her costar in The Americans, Matthew Rhys. Within a few months, we found out that all of those suspicions were dead-on: Keri and Matthew had begun a torrid affair that destroyed her marriage, and Keri and Matthew have been together ever since. They still work together on The Americans, and they are still very much together. And now she’s knocked up!

The Americans’ spies Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys have a secret: They’re expecting a baby together, a source reveals in the new issue of Us Weekly.

“Keri is more than four months along,” says an insider close to the pregnant-again mom of son River, 8, and daughter Willa, 4, with ex-husband Shane Deary, whom she divorced in 2013 after seven years of marriage. A rep for Russell could not be reached for comment. Adds a source close to Rhys, “It’s so exciting for them!”

[From Us Weekly]

Well, congrats to them. While I never got into The Americans, CB has recently started binge-watching it and she really enjoys it. I hear good things about the show all the time and maybe I’ll give it another chance at some point. I’ve always thought Rhys was really attractive in a low-key way, and Keri has that girl-next-door vibe that a lot of men love. And now they’ll have a baby! A half-Welsh, half-American baby. I wonder if they’ll put her pregnancy into the show?

Wow another plot twist! Her life is turning into a real life Felicity episode.

  2. Esmom says:

I’ve attempted to watch The Americans a couple times now and I just can’t seem to stick with it.

I’ve always liked her and I liked him in Brothers and Sisters but I’m not really liking them as a couple. Not sure why. He’s a lost a bit of his hot. But I hope the baby is healthy and happy.

    • Gg says:

Yeah he doesn’t do it for me. Her ex was a hot carpenter… they made hipster Brooklyn look sexy. I think the affair turned on-set romance usually doesn’t end well. But will start style stalking her pregnancy as i’m hoping for a new baby soon myself!

    • Coco says:

The Americans is a great show and I appreciate a plot line involving a young daughter that isn’t all whiny (hello Dana from Homeland)

      • RedWeatherTiger says:

You don’t think the daughter on The Americans is whiny? Oy. No one can compare to Dana Brody in terms of whining, it’s true, but Paige is soooooo irritating. I am always thankful when an episode doesn’t include her.

      • LeAnn Stinks says:

Ugh, Dana Brody was the WORST. I was so happy when her part was written out of the show.

      • Coco says:

Haha, well pretty much all teens whine sometimes but at least it’s not the overdone angsty whine of Dana Brody! I like Paige’s storyline and how both parents struggled over how to handle orders concerning her. I really feel for her – imagine growing up and figuring out that something is really off about your family and discovering your parents are spies and they basically had you and your brother as part of their cover. Head trip to the max!

      • RedWeatherTiger says:

It is a terrific storyline, and Paige is a wildcard that they cannot just kill off. I can’t wait for the new season!

      • Mrs. Darcy says:

Ugh I can’t with Paige. I get that it is a good plot arc, but she’s so annoying! “Wah my parents who raised me in suburbia with nothing to want for are actually spies, I’m totally ratting them out first chance I get!” They should have been more “Russian” with her from a young age! (I kid)

    • Charlotte15 says:

@Esmom, same. I was a HUUUUGE fan of Felicity and loved him on B&S, but together, I don’t know — I think it is just so tainted in my mind, knowing how she treated her first husband (and by extension, their two children together).

      • Jill says:

THIS. I’m not usually a prude, but I just can’t with the crappy behavior of these two. I loved the first season of The Americans and then couldn’t get back into it after that. The second season started right after news of the affair came out and I just didn’t like the show anymore. And the exact same thing happened for me with Gotham.

  3. Dawn says:

Congrats to them! They have a great show and I can’t wait for it to come back on. This kid is going to be a living doll with that DNA.

  4. Dani2 says:

Congrats to them, I didn’t know about the whole scandal attached to her marriage crumbling but congrats regardless.

  5. FingerBinger says:

I get her confused with Rebecca Gayheart.

  6. Tiffany says:

With the way the season ended, no way a pregnancy can happen. Hopefully this season has wrapped because the wait for new episodes make me impatient.

  7. perplexed says:

I think they’ll break up after the show is done. That’s what happens to her romances…

  8. frivolity says:

What an auspicious start to a relationship! It’s sure to last!

    (P.S. I love The Americans)

  9. Kaye says:

I started watching the series, but his appearance was so distracting (in a bad way) that it finally interfered with my focus on the show. To me his teeth look like cheap dentures, and there’s something not quite right about his hair.

    • Malificent says:

The show is set in the 80s, there was something not quite right about everyone’s hair back then!

    • Mrs. Darcy says:

I mean the show is renowned for bad wigs, and his Clark wig is the unsexiest thing I’ve ever seen, but I don’t judge a man based on a receding hairline – he’s going with it, not doing any hair plugs or weird long bangs like most dudes so I find that less of a turn off.

  10. Lambda says:

I hope they name their kid Yuri or Svetlana.
Oy, only a few months until the next season of the Americans.

  11. Marty says:

It is a good show, but DAMN it’s intense.

    • Sixer says:

This is so not my kind of show generally, but I love The Americans. Free Nina Sergeevna! She’s too good for all the men.

Marty, there’s a German show, Deutschland 83, that is similar and just beginning to air here. It’s about an East German agent embedded in West Germany also during the Cold War and it’s looking pretty good on the basis of my seeing one episode. I think Sundance have it stateside.

    • really says:

SO intense, but excellent- much of the writing/acting is the best I’ve ever seen on TV (& that includes BB, GoT, etc.). I used to watch Felicity and I am SHOCKED at how good Keri is in this- not that she was horrible in Felicity, but never saw Elizabeth level stuff coming at all. Matthew, Noah and much of the supporting cast put on advanced clinics each week in magnificence with their work as well. Like my fav TV show of all time, The Wire, The Americans won’t rack up the awards, but it’s so good. The history reminders are great and it makes me sad that we never seem to learn as a society re: war, resources, enemies, etc. if you like this genre, Deutschland 83 (it ran on Sundance last year- hope it comes back).

      • Mrs. Darcy says:

@really Well said! The Americans has such great depth in all of its actors, lead and support. I really love Noah and the actress who plays Nina. And Sergei. It frustrates me that Margo Martindale, who was in the last season for all of a few minutes, is the only one with an Emmy nom. Actually drives me nuts, like the Emmy voters watch the show, ignore all of the other amazing performances, and giver her a nod for a glorified cameo- what is up with that?! I have heard of Deutschland but not seen it – I live in the U.K. so am not sure if they’ve aired it here yet.

  12. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

I actually got excited when I read this! They’re hot hot hot!

    • Thinker says:

I’m on your page. I love The Americans, great show. Keri Russell is absolutely gorgeous. How many women can look that good in jeans and a sweater? Very very few. I wouldn’t call Keri the “girl next door”– that’s kinda the Jen Garner look. And while Garner regularly looks dowdy and matronly wearing ill-fitting blue jeans and a flannel, Keri wears the same thing and sparkles. It’s in the way she carries herself. Poised and elegant.

  13. AnotherDirtyMartini says:

Kaiser, the show is def worth another try. It’s one of my favs. And for me, I had to see Matthew Rhys in action, not in stills, before I developed my crush on him.
It should be returning this month. Amazon Prime usually has the seasons for streaming.

    • What was that says:

If you can perhaps you could try to see Death Comes to Pemberly ..it was a BBC production of a post Pride and Predujice story written by P D James and he starred as Mr Darcy…he was very good …

    • qwerty says:

Same for me. He’s hot in the series but nothing special in pics.

      • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

He’s good in interviews too 🙂
Love hearing the accent – shows you what a good actor he is.

  14. RedWeatherTiger says:

I LOVE The Americans and can’t wait for it to come back. She has had her fair share of on-set romances, but she is older now, so I am going to give her the benefit of the doubt and hope these two are in it forever. I like them both a lot.

  15. Scarlet Vixen says:

I don’t watch The Americans, and I never watched Felicity either, so I’m just here to be superficial. I have always been so envious of her body type–petite and naturally slim without ever looking malnourished. I don’t even mind when she wears tops with a really deep V neckline because she doesn’t have either fake boobs or gross chest ribs poking out (like a KimK or a Nicole Richie). Ugh, that sounds so judgy and shallow, but I really mean it as a compliment.

  16. Chelly says:

I feel so terrible whenever I hear of a husband or wife being cheated on, especially in the celeb world. It must be devastating to see pics of the new ‘happy’ couple all over the place. My skin isnt thick enough for that kind of torment

    • Charlotte15 says:

Chelly I agree. The only thing that articles like this do is make me feel so sorry for the cheated-on spouse.

    • suze says:

I know…and articles always gloss over this. It’s always about the wonderfulness of the new bright shiny love, or how incredible the baby will be.

  17. Pants says:

I love the show and I love them. My cold little heart is all aflutter!

  18. Penelope says:

    Good luck to them.

Her ex was much hotter. 🙂

    • Gg says:

Yep! No shirt on just building me stuff all day long. Really a simple girl at heart 🙂

Follow @dearyconstructionbrooklyn for the occasional drool

  19. Zooey says:

Have loved her since Felicity. I was holding out hope for her reuniting romantically with Scott Speedman!

  20. livan says:

I am absurdly happy about this! I think they have great chemistry on the americans, so hot!

  21. Barrett says:

I saw her 10 years ago in a NYC deli. Her first Brooklyn hipster carpenter husband was a big tall guy and way hotter?

Poor regular hubby squashed by balding welsh star….

    • Chips'n'Gravy says:

I think her ex hubby is a balding guy too. I always remember how Keri called out Cameron Diaz for checking out her hubby when they were on the red carpet. She said her then hubby was really flattered.

  22. Mrs. Darcy says:

Ok so I’m an Americans fan, a Keri and Matthew (as actors) fan, and I get why people are judgey. But I don’t think it’s fair to compare them to Ben McKenzie and whatshername from Gotham. That is a trainwreck of instant adultery = baby. Keri & Matthew have been together for a couple of years now, and she kept such a low profile with her marriage I don’t know how people can speculate with certainty that Keri and Matthew broke it up. Most marriages are over for awhile before the official announcement, esp. when there are kids involved. Ok so maybe there was overlap, so it’s ok for Brangelina but not for them? They at least waited a respectable amount of time before coming out as a couple, have been super low key, and if they want to have kids together it’s their right, and she’s like 40 now so they can’t really afford to wait. I’m happy for them and think they are a cute couple and hope the Americans goes on for another few seasons, it is so underrated and they both deserve Emmy noms stat.

    • AnotherDirtyMartini says:

The truth is, Mrs. Darcy, we have no idea what happened in Keri’s marriage, so I’m with you. No judgement here.
