Lea Michele in black Elie Saab at the PCAs: pretty or too short?

People's Choice Awards 2016

I’m not a huge fan of Lea Michele, but I have to admit that I kind of dig the dress she wore at last night’s People’s Choice Awards. The black Elie Saab dress seemed the appropriate choice to match Lea’s dark character on Scream Queens, a role which earned her a nomination for Favorite Actress In A New TV Series (which went to Quantico‘s Priyanka Chopra). I like the beaded cutouts on the front and side of the dress and (being the shoe addict that I am) I really dig the shoes. I don’t think she needed the belt though. It seems like an afterthought, as it doesn’t match the dress at all. My only complaint is that it’s a teeny bit too short. I know I’d be tugging on the bottom of that skirt to make sure all of my parts were covered. Overall, well played, Lea.

As for Lea’s Scream Queens co-star, Keke Palmer, wearing Yousef Al Jasmi, I’m not sure what to think. She’s got a great figure, and the skirt shows it off nicely, but that top is a whole lot of nope. I like the contrast of an intricate beaded top with a simple skirt, but this looks like its about to fall off of her. If someone could reunite her with the top half of the thing, that would be great. Also, what’s with that lone tiny braid hanging down?

Amber Valetta looks washed out in Balmain. I love the cut of the dress, but the color isn’t doing her any favors. Bonus points for the clutch and especially the Giuseppe Zanotti lace-up booties (shoe envy!) I can only assume it was a windy evening on the red carpet, as evidenced by her hair.

Minority Report star Meagan Good opted for a sea green waterfall gown from Alice and Olivia. It’s nice to see some color on the runway, and the dress is giving me a little bit of an “Elsa from Frozen” vibe, but I like it. I love her hair, but I kind of wish she had opted for an updo, because her long locks are obscuring the top of her gown.

Shay Mitchell, nominated for Favorite Cable TV Actress for her role on Pretty Little Liars made an impact on the red carpet in a stunning black gown from HANEY. The sleek, halterneck gown looked amazing from the front, but the side slit and accents won me over. Her slicked-back hair and smoky eyes were on point, and her silver clutch, bangle and strappy stilettos completed the look.

Shay’s Pretty Little Liars co-star (and fellow nominee for Favorite Cable TV Actress) Ashley Benson rocked a LBD from Philipp Plein. I love the epaulets and the strappy sandals. No additional accessories are necessary, but I do love the thick ring she’s wearing. I do have to wonder though, is there some poor guy holding her purse somewhere?

Our last PLL star and nominee for Favorite Cable TV Actress, Lucy Hale, had me as far as her hair, makeup, earrings and the top half of her dress. After that, she lost me. Her dress by Self Portrait seems to be having some sort of identity crisis. Maybe if they got rid of the lace panel below her knees, the dress could work. I do, however adore her Lee Savage clutch and Brian Atwood heels.

I don’t know who Shay Mitchell is, as I’ve ever watched PLL, but boy, she’s stunning.

I’ve noticed a lot of dresses in the last few months with those lace inserts in the skirt, so it’s a thing? That look reminds me of when I was a little girl. My mum used to make my sister and me the most exquisite dresses. Even when we grew taller we didn’t want to give them up, and those were frugal times…so, since there was none of the original fabric left, mum would cut off 3-4 inches from the bottom, add a strip of some other fabric, and reattach the bottom hem. I remember she used lace on a few occasions. These designer dresses with the same detail make me think the designer ran out of fabric..or ideas…

Is it just me or does Lea Michelle’s makeup and hair look terrible? She looks like she’s going to the gym or something. That is a ‘real people’ face, right there, not a red carpet face.

    • Wentworth Miller says:

Her hair and makeup does look awful. The dress is cute and it’s not to short but the entire look, together, doesn’t work.
It was funny to me, when Sarah Hyland was on Fashion Police and joked about how Lea Michelle always did this, “desperate for attention, look at me look at me,” pose.

    • FLORC says:

Agree. Something changed with her makeup.
And my personal rule with hemlines. If I have to tug at it before sitting or getting up from sitting it’s too short.

I have to say my favorite outfits of the night go to Ming-Na Wen, Kate Hudson, and Sasha Alexander.

I forgot how gorgeous Megan Goode is

Shay is gorgeous! Love this look, stunning. Lea, meh.

I am not a fan of cut-outs, but I kind of like Lea’s dress. I’d like it even more on someone who wasn’t so desperate for attention.

Don’t really care for any of the other dresses. That mint green is a tricky shade for me, sometimes I love it, and sometimes it’s just a little too bright and hurts my eyes.

  9. Apsutter says:

I like Leah’s dress and loooooooove the shoes! Good analysis about the belt tho…she should have ditched it

  10. serena says:

I love Lucy Hale and Shay Mitchell’s look! On the other hand I totally dislike Ashley Benson’s, hair and make up are awful and the dress is good but too simple, forgettable.

  11. Dr. Funkenstein says:

Never got her. I get the appeal to the GLeeks, but she is not beautiful. I remember someone saying something to the effect of an actress looking as though “she believes something about herself that just isn’t true.” I think it fits here.
