Mel Gibson’s divorce settlement could be largest in history

green awards 2 111208

Now we get to talk about everyone’s favorite subject: money! Specifically, the money that crazy Mel Gibson is going to have to shell out to his soon to be ex-wife Robyn in the divorce. Yesterday, we reported on the general assumption that Mel’s fortune was in the vicinity of $900 million. Today, People Magazine is reporting that it’s probably “close to $1 billion”. Hello, sailor! Crazy sailor, that is.

Mel and Robyn have been married for 28 years. She’s the mother of his seven children, and she filed for divorce in California, a community property state that tends to split property and assets straight down the middle if a settlement cannot be reached. All of this leads to the conclusion that Robyn will walk away with something like $400-500 million.

Mel Gibson may soon be writing one of the biggest checks of his life – to his wife.

With no indication that the estranged couple – who married 28 years ago – had a prenup, Robyn Gibson, 53, is legally entitled in their divorce to half of everything the actor-director-producer earned during their marriage: A fortune estimated at close to $1 billion.

“This could easily be one of the biggest divorce settlements in Hollywood history,” says Los Angeles family lawyer Lynn Soodik, who’s not involved with the case. “Any attorney would advise her to take half.”

A $500 million settlement would dwarf the current record holders of celebrity divorce:

Michael Jordan ponied up $168 million following his 2006 divorce with wife Juanita; Neil Diamond forked over $150 million after his 1994 split with Marcia Murphey; while Steven Spielberg shelled out $100 million following his 1989 divorce from Amy Irving.

Among Gibson’s estimated assets: More than $600 million grossed by The Passion of the Christ alone, $100-plus million in real estate investments worldwide (he bought an island in Fiji for $15 million in 2004), and $75 million for film and TV projects for which Gibson executive produced.

As for film residuals, Gibson, also 53, “would be accountable to pay half for the rest of his days,” Soodik says. “If he gets a residual check for Lethal Weapon or Braveheart, half of that check is hers.”

But don’t expect the ex-couple to enter a painful, protracted battle in the courts.

“This divorce will probably reach a settlement in a matter of months,” Soodik says. “It likely won’t be messy since there’s enough money to go around.”

We don’t really know how messy this is going to get, mainly because we don’t know just how crazy Mel is. Will he drag this out? Will he be humble in the face of divorce, or will he just go on yet another bender? Is it weird that I’m sort of hoping for a least a little insanity? He wouldn’t be Mel Gibson if he didn’t have the occasional freak-out.

I think I saw this coming since 3/05 when he was on the ellen show, she brought out a picture of mel and robyn, the crowd went nuts and he just sat there stonefaced, then ellen asked him what he had planned for their 25th coming up and he said,”nothing, I’m the one always doing theplanning, she can do it this time”, I thought that was weird to be that pissed to actually say that on national tv,and supposedly they were’nt photographed together since 5/05 oksana came after the fact, I don’t think she was the cause, but if she thinks she’s gonna change mel I have pokemon cards I’d like to sell to her.

So according to Mel, they’ve been seperated for a while before Robyn filed. Good. At least she isn’t as dumb as I was thinking she was. Looks like they may have both agreed to see other people while they were seperated because who takes three years to decide to divorce someone if she had a problem with him dating others during that time.

Please stop using that picture of Mel Gibson. It FREAKS ME OUT!! Those are crazy eyes. Have you ever seen a picture of John Brown? They have the same eyes. CRAZY EYES!!

Typical Hollywood fool. Only people hurt is wife and kids. This arrogant son of a bitch will not be fazed, why worry about him. He will get a bottle of good Mexican booze and retreat to his world where he is a hero and worshiped. What is that old saying,”a fool and his money”, this is the start of his end. Next headline will be the car accident.

Good, this hideous man deserves every shred of bad karma that is coming his way.

Didn’t they get married in Australia? Did they recognise pre-nups in Oz back then?
This automatic “ZOMG no prenup!!!” business that tabloids get into does my blinking head in, especially when it cannot possibly apply (such as marriages in other jurisdictions).

Still and all, this could be one hell of a battle …

Has anyone thought that maybe he wants the divorce and she is, once again, bowing to his wishes? Could be he wants to set up house with his new honey. Having her be the one to file leaves her with a shred of dignity (“Good on Robyn; she’s finally kicking his ass out” or, “Yes, she’s finally getting a backbone.”)
To think I drooled over him in The Year of Living Dangerously.

Robyn is the one who filled. And why would they have gotten a pre nup in 1980, what was he starring in? Nothing! His first film wasn’t until 1984. They were just a young couple starting out with hopes & dreams just like the rest of the world.

According to sources Oksana is not even a factor and IF she becomes one – shame on you Mel, she is younger than your oldest child. But like a lot of men out there, that doesn’t seem to be a problem in anyone’s mind. But it sure is in mine ~shudders~

They have not lived together since his accident in 2006. I think that 2 1/2 – 3 yrs has been plenty of time to know where you are going and IF you are.

They have both publicly announced that this is a joint decision and as they have always kept their lives and their children’s lives private, so will this divorce. Their family attorney believes it is going to be a quick divorce and not a lot of hoopla which would continue the way they have always conducted their business.

At age 53, i just hope they will both survive. Regardless of their circumstances, divorce is always messy. Especially where children are involved and their youngest of six is 10, while the other five range in ages 19-28.

Kudos to them in filing while their children are away on holiday so to stay out of the lime light.

Regardless of all of his success, his family has always come first and Robyn is entitled to all of that success because she lived thru it!

So let them live their lives in peace and hope the best for all involved. Isn’t that what you would want at the end of Your day ?
