Chloe Grace Moretz on playing Carrie: ‘I felt fat, scared & incredibly insecure’

It’s kind of odd to refer to an 18-year-old actress as a Hollywood veteran, but Chloë Grace Moretz sure fits the bill. Chloe is promoting her alien invasion flick, The 5th Wave, which comes out on January 22. She covers Marie Claire’s February issue and had a lot to say to the magazine about growing up in the limelight.

Chloë, who began her career at the age of 6, had a number of film and TV projects under her belt before the double whammy of 2010’s Let Me In (my personal favorite of hers) and Kick Ass. For the latter film, she trained hard, telling the magazine, “I was pure muscle at that age [12]. I was able to do like 200 pull-ups. It was nuts.” Her latest role has her taking part in nine months of jujitsu training with Jackie Chan’s stunt crew. Pretty impressive, right? Her other upcoming projects include Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and playing the lead in the live action remake of The Little Mermaid.

Fortunately, Chloë is on track to avoid that “child star gone bad” stereotype. That’s not to say that she hasn’t had a tough go of it, dealing with criticism for her role in 2013’s (unnecessary) remake of Carrie – as well as people tracking her every move. Here’s what she had to say about that:

On filming Carrie and social media critics: “I felt fat; I felt not pretty. I felt like I didn’t really know who I was. I was so confused; I was scared. I had bad acne. I felt incredibly insecure.”

On getting older: “I’m so free now. I don’t know what happened, but when I turned 17, this huge weight was lifted off my shoulders. I’m so open; I have a good time; I don’t worry about what people say about me. I know who I am, who I want to be, what I want to portray myself as, what I want people to think of me.”

On dating: “I don’t want to date older people, because I’m 18 and older people are more serious. Then I kind of realized, I’ll go on dates, why not? And that’s kind of how I am right now. I’m not looking for a while. At least till I’m like 23.”

[From Marie Claire]

I’m surprised she thought she was fat and unattractive when she played Carrie. I thought she was too glamorous to play Carrie, she definitely lacked the “plain Jane” quality that Sissy Spacek brought to the original. And, maybe you can credit camera trickery, but I definitely didn’t see fat and/or acne in Carrie. I am Team Chloë all the way. Oh, and I love the top she is wearing on the cover. #SequinEnvy. You can read the full interview when the February issue of Marie Claire hits newsstands soon.

Well, as someone who was very fat and very scared and very insecure as a teenger I hope she’s exagerrating, for her sake.

      @Locke Lemora

Most teenagers are very scared, insecure, and feel fat. And it is VERY real, regardless of what they actually look like. If they had a rational and accurate self view to know they are being irrational, it’s a moot point, because then they wouldn’t feel that way.

Edited, because I reread your comment and thought you were saying something else. It’s early. I need coffee.

      • Mel M says:

Exactly, I’m a child of the 90s, well my teenage years, and I remember my mom caught me with diet pills when I was in 8th grade and weighed 80lbs. I used to only drink Sprite at lunch with Therese of my girl friends because we were all always on diets. I look back now and think how ridiculous I was but back then you couldn’t convince me I was skinny.

      • Pippa says:

Agreed. I remember thinking I was just the fattest thing ever in high school because I wore a size 4/6 rather than a 0/2 like the ‘popular’ girls, it’s honestly baffling to me now but sadly I think it’s real to most teenagers at some point. I’m glad Chloe seems so self-possesed and confident now, she’s a good actress and I hope she goes far without getting sucked into the horrible former child star curse.

  2. Don't kill me I'm French says:

Chloe swears the self-confidence ( not the arrogance or condescending) all time and since always .

  3. Farhi says:

I envy how sure of herself and how mature she is , and she is only 18 y.o. She is very powerful.
How does one get to that point so young? Are people born that way or what makes them so confident? And it is not baseless confidence, it is well founded.

    • perplexed says:

      Her parents probably.

It’s hard to say how someone at 18 will turn out later on though, no matter how confident they appear on the surface. I thought Raven-Symone was a smart 18 year old, and yet now…..

    • Amelia says:

I reckon it’s down to having a strong family around you. Not necessarily large, but a supportive and close unit.
She often cites her brothers in helping to keep her grounded, and from a couple of interviews around the time Kick-Ass came out, I think I remember her saying that her parents wouldn’t take any crap or swearing from her at home.
Whereas LiLo, for example, was basically thrown to the wolves by her mother.
I’ve got such a soft spot for Chloe, Hugo was playing on the tv over Christmas and she and Asa were utterly charming.
That sequin top is giving me a headache, though. It’s like an optical illusion, looks like it could’ve been illustrated when you stare for too long.

    • Candy says:

I was like that when I was young…. But now, not so much.
Sometimes it lasts, sometimes it doesn’t. I think it depends on what life throws your way.
And yes, parents have a huge role.
I wish I could go back to my 18 year old self and have confidence like that again.

  4. Felice. says:

Carrie is chubby in the book. I think the remake would’ve been fine if they didn’t recut it in post to make it more like the original movie. They were aiming for it to be more like the book but it was recut.

  5. Rachel says:

The film is called Let Me In. Let Her In is a John Travolta song.

  6. Meh says:

Who is calling her a Hollywood veteran? I don’t think anyone is, and I think that she is ARGUABLY a veteran, at best. Are we going to consider all child stars who grow up and continue to act, “Hollywood veterans”? Poor choice of words, IMO.

  7. FingerBinger says:

Too glamorous to play Carrie? I must have a different definition of glamour because I didn’t see that.

  8. Bluesky says:

She was hilarious on 30 Rock as Jack’s arch nemesis!

  9. Jay says:

Love her. I googled pics of her in the Carrie remake… the fact that she ever thought she was fat in that film makes me very sad.

  10. Francesca says:

Only thing i remember seeing her in is Laggies with Keira Knightley which i just enjoyed. So. Much. Seriously, i loved that movie.

  11. themummy says:

I find her incredibly dull and average in every way.

  12. Argirl says:

The arm and hand weirdness she did in Carrie ruined it for me.

  13. Rockin Robin says:

She is just a breath of fresh air.

  14. pato says:

Her sandals on the third picture are awesome!! I don´t like her acting though, except for 30 rock.

  15. Chinoiserie says:

She has some baby weight in her face especially a couple of ago and waist is not as tiny naturally as some Hollywood girls have so that is why she probably felt fat, obviously she is not.

  16. Mikeyangel says:

She is beautiful. Agreed that many many teenagers feel a totally different way than what reality is!
