Cate Blanchett in Givenchy at the Golden Globes: Old West saloon lampshade?

Cate Blanchett didn’t win last night. I was a little bit surprised by that, just because it feels like it’s been years since Cate went to an awards show and walked away empty-handed. It also feels like it’s been years since Cate went to an awards show and her gown wasn’t one of the most talked-about red carpet moments. Cate wore this pale Givenchy to the Globes last night, and if you had told me that it was Marchesa, I would have believed you. It bugs me that Cate chose this dress out of all the dresses she has access to. I mean, if she just wanted to phone it in, Armani would have sent her anything. And that’s what it felt like – like she was just phoning it in sartorially. If I wanted to be unkind, I might compare the dress to an Old West saloon lampshade. There was some effort with the hair, and I really don’t like it. It’s too stiff?

Kate Winslet in Ralph Lauren. God, she annoys me. It’s not even her style or anything, although there’s something to be said for Winslet finally understanding what looks good on her, and just wearing versions of the same two dresses over and over like a red carpet uniform. She looked fine here. Annoying, but fine.

As I said on Twitter last night, Brie Larson has been quietly waging a very effective Oscar campaign. She’s going to all of the right events, shaking all the right hands, doing press and not making any waves. She’s not desperate. She’s not try-hard. She’s appreciative, kind, generous and sweet. She always remembers to say something nice about Jacob Tremblay, her young costar. No one has anything bad to say about her. If she continues to play it like this, I think she’ll be the one to beat for the Best Actress Oscar, quite honestly. Even Brie’s custom Calvin Klein gown was inoffensive. It wasn’t my favorite thing on the red carpet, in motion, but it photographs well and she looked very pretty. Well played, Brie!

It pains me to say this because I love Cate Blanchett (and I normally love her style) but this dress is just awful. It’s made my short list of worst of the night, and I never thought that would happen.

    • Dani2 says:

She normally comes out with the really interesting looks and although this look is definitely interesting, that’s where the positives end, it’s so unflattering and the matching heels? *shudders*

    • Don't kill me I'm French says:

The worst look of The night ( sadly for her, there is very few fashion mistakes yesterday)

    • Ally8 says:

It’s from the Dolly Parton collection at Marchesa, from the looks of it.

    • Esmom says:

Yes, it’s pretty bad. And that hair is awful for her, too. Definitely too stiff.

    • Snappyfish says:

The architectural detailing of this dress is truly impressive. With that said it is too much silky lingerie w/a western bend.

    • chelsea says:

Her track record has been really bad lately.

    • Carol says:

At first I thought “Old West saloon lampshade” was referring to Cate’s hair. That’s what it looked like to me. I don’t hate her dress but don’t love it either. It was very…meh.

Loved Brie Larson’s dress and her entire look.

    • zinjojo says:

I never thought I would say this about Cate, but it’s one of the worst of the night. WTF was she thinking and why would she ever agree to wear a dress that’s just. so. bad.

  2. chloe says:

I love Brie and Kate’s gowns, Cate’s not so much, it looks like it’s hanging off of her, but I love her hair.

  3. hey-ya says:

…am loving all this globe coverage..especially this dress which just cracks me up on a rainy day… I see Cates laughing too…

  4. Bae says:

Brie’s dress looks like something Jennifer Aniston would have worn 15 years ago. She was amazing in Room, but every time I see her I think to the interview she did with Shailene and they both came across as so pretentious it was hard to read.
    Kate looks amazing.
    Cate – I don’t have words.

  5. Chinoiserie says:

Brie has been the Best Actress frontrunner for what seems like forever so this was the least unexpected win of the night.
She looks really thin in these pictures, I feel like she has lost weight recently. Anyway she looks nice but not really memorable.

    • Dani2 says:

Yeah, I really feel like she’s been the frontrunner for some time now, she has a slew of critic nominations, she’s been nominated for all the precursors and she’s just won the Golden Globe. I really think it’s hers to lose at this point.

I also wouldn’t mind seeing Charlotte Rampling at least get a nomination, and I know Saoirse is a lock at this point but someone who I know has almost no shot at being nominated this Thursday but I would’ve loved for them to be nominated is Charlize Theron. Her performance as Imperator Furiosa has really stayed with me since I saw Mad Max.

    • qwerty says:

      Bree looks fit

  6. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Cate Blanchett has hideous taste, and people continue to find it surprising. Why? Almost everything she wears is awful and always has been. But every awards show, people are like “oh, dear, the normally fashion forward Cate has got it wrong this time.” Not this time. Every time. Her taste in clothing is atrocious, but people always act like it’s a one off. And my favorite explanation – she’s not afraid to try new things – will surely come out somewhere.

    • Locke Lamora says:

I think she looks amazing most of the time. The dresses she wore to the Golden Globes and Oscars when she won for Blue Jasmine were beautiful. She also has that regal attitude that elevates the dress. However, this dress can not be elevated.
And even if it is hideous, at least it’s not boring.

    • ell says:

no, i disagree, she’s hit or miss. some of her outfits have been gorgeous imo (last year she wore a schiaparelli and a giulietta dress which were just beautiful), so,e have been appalling like this one. the problem is that so many dresses look the same and are boring, and the different dresses sometimes are just too out there.

    • Lizzie McGuire says:

I read Lainey’s post on Cate Blanchett & how she always looks unique & inventive. This dress looks like a lampshade from the 50’s, I don’t see anything inventive, maybe uniquely ugly but no way is this something that anyone is going to remember. Kate’s dress is the same color as her last 10 dresses it’s so meh. Brie is barely starting so I have to give it to her after this she’ll be getting way more options.

    • manta says:

You just describe what I feel most of the times about Rihanna or Lupita Nyong’o’s outfits. The “on everybody else I’d just hate it” or “She elevates even the most atrocious piece of garment like nobody else” totally escapes me. When it’s hideous it’s hideous, however “regal” you are.

Add Tilda Swinton to that list.

  7. ell says:

givenchy had far better dresses for spring, this one is just odd.

i like brie’s dress, she looks lovely. gold with a slight tan go so well together.

  8. kri says:

That dress looks like the decorative shawl my great aunt had thrown over the top of her piano.

  9. LOT says:

The whole package is awful: dress and hair are a disaster. Makeup is average at best. For what I can see I hate the matchy shoes, as well.

  10. arbelia says:

Brie Larson was stunning, the best dressed of the night IMO and she’s a deserving winner. Cate ‘s dress is just cheap and weird . As for Winslet of course it seems to be the same dress all over again. but shes’ not a fashion girl ( unlike Blanchett) . She always choose very simple, confortable dresses. They always look like they ‘re made of the same fabric, but hey it works for her, she looks fantastic. Why would she change that whe she clearly has no intrerest in being a fashion icon.

  11. Karen says:

Brie has been wearing a lot is 90s-esque dresses. She’s my favorite of these three but only because one is too much, the other is too little.

Brie’s posture could help make this better though. Shoulders back, lady.

  12. lilacflowers says:

Cate’s dress looks like one of those illustrations of the human organs.

Sorry, but I hated Brie’s dress. The bottom of it was fine but from the hips up, it just came off as clunky,ill-fitting Vegas showgirl as Princess Leia slavegirl.

  13. felixswan2 says:

Oh Cate, your dress is terrible. I love Brie’s dress though!

  14. lucy2 says:

    Cate’s was such a disappointment.
Kate’s is very pretty and a good choice for her.
Brie’s…I just hate cut outs. The skirt is pretty, but the top half gives a droopy look.

  15. poppy says:

CB looks horrid. all of it. geezus idk which is worse between the hair helmet and the thing some are calling a dress. FUG

  16. K says:

If not for Kate Hudson, Cate Blanchett would have been the worst dressed of the night. There is not a positive thing to say about this look, not a single thing.

I love Brie Larson’s look, and I’m thrilled she won. She was classy and from everything I’ve seen gave the best performance of the year, she deserves it.

  17. Elle says:

    She looks beautiful!!!

  18. smcollins says:

I’m not usually a fan of shiny gold gowns, but Brie totally pulls it off. I think keeping the hair & makeup subtle and allowing the dress to do all of the “work” was the key.
Kate looked good. She knows what works and sticks with it. I do find her rather annoying also. I love her as an actress, but she’s just so….I don’t know. Overly perky? Too hyper? During her acceptance speech my husband joked about how he just wanted to shoot her with a tranquilizer dart to calm her down. Lol.
I’m not sure what to say about Cate. She’s always been daring, but this look is just a great big bag of No. Still love her, though.

  19. BeefJerky says:

Cut fringe like that was all over the runways recently– Cate’s just more attuned to higher fashion than a lot of the ‘ball gown girls’. I love it, the color works for her and it’s interesting. Nothing’s worse that being average, in my opinion.

  20. I Choose Me says:

Cate’s look is beyond fug. Her style has been really downhill lately. Brie Larson’s gold gown is gorgeous.

  21. EscapedConvent says:

Wow, Cate Blanchett’s dress is a mess. Who could think that up?! Oh I see—-Givenchy. I like the color but don’t think it works for her. It looks to me as if the designer wanted to make a few different dresses, and sewed them all together.

  22. Carmen says:

Loved Larson’s dress and she was wearing the hell out of it. My second favorite after Jaimie Alexander’s.

Blanchett — shiverin’ shitfits. And it looked even worse from the side and back than it looked from the front. Fire her stylist. She’s been bombing on the red carpet for the past several years now.

  23. MB says:

Brie Larson looks so good. That stomach!!!!
Her an Jaimie Alexander were my favourites, too.

  24. Velvet Elvis says:

I’m getting a Rorschach test vibe from that design on the front. Anyone else see a bat carrying a baby?

  25. What's inside says:

It’s a costume and that is what Blanchett likes. Is there anyone else that could wear that and truly not look like a Victorian lampshade?

  26. Mary-Alic says:

Cate’s dress is a fine throwback at the 20’s, the Golden Age. The detail is exquisite, the structure is a master work! Haute Coutute is not about “looking nice”, it’s about the quality of fabric, detail, handwork, and novelty.
