Matt Damon & Luciana, in Naeem Khan at the Critics’ Choice: striking or showgirl?

The 21st Annual Critics' Choice Awards - Red Carpet
Matt Damon had a lot of cutaways last night during a somewhat tedious ceremony. The host bits, by Silicon Valley’s T.J. Miller, were really lame, like incredibly so. Some of the presenters were funny and had some decent lines though, which makes sense because we’re talking about the top tier of seasoned actors. Whenever the camera cut to Damon he seemed to be laughing and enjoying himself despite how much it must grate to have to sit through those things. You get the sense that he’s very much “on” and campaigning, although his category, Best Actor, went to Leonardo DiCaprio, who Skyped in to accept it.

Matt’s wife Luciana was in this black and silver Naeem Khan gown with a stripe pattern along the bodice which led to square confetti-like details on the skirt. This looked better on camera than it does it still photos. There’s something kind of showgirl about it. Naeem Khan is a friend of the Damons and he often does Luciana’s gowns.

Sarah Paulson was also in Naeem Khan, in a silver sequin dress with a v-back, high collar and cap sleeves. I don’t like her styling, I just saw her in Carol and dark hair suits her better, but I dig this dress. She takes fashion risks and I think this one is paying off. It’s funky, it’s got a spacey 60s vibe and I like the contrasting fabric at the neck and on the sleeves.

Pregnant Liv Tyler was in Cushnie et Ochs. It seems like everyone was wearing open back dresses last night and it must have been cold. I like the sleeves and the high slit on this gown. It’s a nice balance between maternity wear and high fashion and it looked great on screen, she’s so statuesque.

Emmy Rossum was one of several ladies in Dior (see the women of Mad Max) and she was there to support her fiance, Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail. Mr. Robot cleaned up last night, winning Best Drama, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor. I thought her gown was gorgeous and I love the kind of ballerina top which leads to a skirt slit to a wedge of silver sequins. Her hair was a little too slicked back for my taste, but that’s a minor complaint.

I’m including Wendi McLendon-Covey, looking lovely in navy blue, because I love her work on The Goldbergs. It’s such a great show and she’s an excellent actress. She was nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy, which went to Rachel Bloom.

Whoa. Wendy looks 10 yrs younger. What in heck did she do? She looks nothing like she looked In Bridesmaids or even on Reno 911!

    • missmerry says:

I think she just lost weight and volume in her hair (i’m soooo used to seeing her as Clem and as Beverly Goldberg with the outrageously-volumized hair) that she looks so different in real life!

I’m so glad she was nominated (along with Constance Wu), they’re both amazing in their comedies, I’m sad they lost. :/

      • QQ says:

But her brows seem to be wayyyy Up from Usual?? IDK something IS different though!

      • lucy2 says:

I never would have guessed it was her – agree some weight loss, and being used to seeing her as Beverly. I love that show and am glad she was recognized with a nomination.

Agree with QQ on the brows though, it’s like the makeup artist took a sharpie to her face.

      • Dani says:

Whatever it is she had done, she looks really good,

      • kri says:

HOLY CARP. I didn’t recognize her til I saw your comment. Whoa. Yeep. some tinkering was done for sure.

      • kate says:

I think her brows are always pretty much entirely drawn on. Usually she goes for the same shape though, this time she’s gone a bit higher and bolder. That and the weight loss makes a difference. Plus she’s gone for a more natural hairstyle and more flattering make-up than usual.

She probably has a little botox and fillers too, but nothing major that would cause her to look different.

    • Cupcake says:

She looks banging from a distance but up close… what is up with those CATERPILLAR EYEBROWS! Woof!

  2. Locke Lamora says:

I like the dress, LOVE the bangs, but her hair could have been sleeker. It would look better shorter too.

    • PHD Gossip says:

I think Luciana is wearing a wig. Discuss.

      • Don't kill me I'm French says:

really ?! I think that the bang and her very long hair are not flattering on her

    • sills says:

I also like the bangs here, guess I’m less bangs-averse than some, LOL. The whole look is sexy and sleek. I think she always looks lovely and event-appropriate on red carpets.

    • Cupcake says:

I think Luciana looks the best she EVER has, bangs and all! I’m not a fan of bangs either but her look comes together and she looks more sleek and polished than usual.

      • Jaygee says:

Pretty sure Luciana has had fillers or an implant in her cheeks.

      • Emma - The JP Lover says:

@Jaygee, who wrote: “Pretty sure Luciana has had fillers or an implant in her cheeks.”

Luciana is Argentinian (born Luciana Bozan in Salta, Argentina in 1976) and her smooth, even-toned skin has looked the same since the very first picture of her surfaced from Berlin, Germany when she visited Matty D while he was filming “The Bourne Supremacy” (circa very early 2004, Ben Affleck was in the picture as well, the three of them were leaving a Berlin club). The woman is only 39-years-old and looks like she was born with a permanent tan. I doubt if she has had (or yet needs) ‘fillers’ or facial ‘implants.’

She always looks fantastic at public events with her husband. She either has incredible style or an incredible stylist, because her dresses fit her frame and height exquisitely. Oh and this isn’t the first time Luci has worn bangs. 🙂

      • Berlin says:

I disagree that Lucianna always looked this great. The first few years of pictures of her with Matt she looked VERY average. Now she looks gorgeous. 22-year-olds are getting fillers and Botox, so age has nothing to do with it.

      • G says:

She looks like she had some work done sorry Argentina. Especially in the mouth area. She got new teeth and her cheeks are plumped. Keep it 100.

  3. Esmom says:

Luciana’s dress is lovely but I am not a fan of the bangs (trauma, lol). I like the idea of Sarah’s but as a whole she looks too stiff or something. I like Liv and Emmy’s looks.

Wendi’s eyebrows look tattooed on to me. I’ve actually seen a few women in recent months with tattooed brows, is this a thing now?

    • AG-UK says:

Yep a v big thing.. well here in London it seems to be.

      • Esmom says:

I’m in Chicago and the more I look, the more I notice it, especially among the Europeans who are here.

      • Locke Lamora says:

The waitress in a cafe next to my university has tattoed eyebrows, but they seem to be lower and longer than her natural eyebrowes were. She is also a very fair freckled blonde and the eyebrows are black so the whole look is bizzare.

      • embertine says:

Yep, a colleague of mine (in SE England) has just had them done, and wow are they not a good look for most women.

      • Esmom says:

I agree they’re not a good look. Harsh and kinda trashy. I’m not sure who they think they might be fooling, they look so fake.

      • KB says:

Really? I did not realize people did this, outside of “chola eyebrows”

      • Camille says:

Chloe Morello (a beauty guru on YouTube) has hers tattooed on, by they look amazing and natural.

    • Crumpet says:

It just looks like powder to me.

      • Sabrine says:

Some women get it done because they have no eyebrows left, ie over plucking. So they get them tattooed in. I have next to none myself, and although it’s tempting not to have the bore of being an eyebrow artist every morning, I’m too afraid of the potential result, too dark, too long, too wide, too high. Once done, there’s no going back.

    • Ash says:

Some folks who suffer from trichtillomania elect to have eyebrows tattooed on because then they won’t look eyebrow-less. It’s not the option I’d choose, even though it’s been recommended to me by those who have had it done.

  4. sketches says:

Beverly Goldberg is my Smother Hero.

  5. Naya says:

Slightly off topic but what does Luicana do? Like seriously, does she at least “design jewelry” – the go-to profession for bored rich women? Because seeing as she has child care assistance and her kids arent exactly little, preparing for these events is her occupation. So why does she never knock it out of the park?

    • ell says:

      i think so.

    • Esmom says:

Wow, just because someone doesn’t have a full-time or even part=time occupation deemed acceptable by you, you assume she has nothing but time on her hands to prep for award shows?

      • Don't kill me I'm French says:

I think @Naya is bashing Damon’s wife because she doesn’t work

      • Naya says:

        @Dont Kill Me

Of course not. Everybody knows atleast one stay at home mother, we KNOW its a demanding job. I’m questioning what she does because I know she has a lot of professional help in the home, I’ve seen photos of some of her nannies. Her job appears to be to follow Matt around and to work out. Surely she can add, “look better on the red carpet” on her to-do list.

@Esmom What DOES she do though? I mean we’ve seen her childcare team, what does she do with her days? Genuinely baffled.

      • KB says:

@Naya She is still the one raising four girls, whether she has help or not. Maybe she takes classes online, or volunteers, or sits on her butt all day – either way it’s not really our business. Your repeated mention of her nannies really makes it seem like you are judging her, whether you admit it or not. Everyone in Hollywood has nannies, regardless of whether or not they’re working. Most people just insist that they stay out of sight when paparazzi are around.

      • Sabrine says:

We have no clue what Luciana does as a wife and mother and it’s very assumptive and unnecessary to make unkind comments about her personal life. It is none of our business and why would anyone care unless they’re making making these comments because they are jealous.

      • Emma - The JP Lover says:

@Naya, who wrote: “Slightly off topic but what does Luicana do? Like seriously, does she at least “design jewelry” – the go-to profession for bored rich women? Luciana Damon is an Interior Designer.

      • Jane says:

Emma – she’s not an interior designer. That was made up by the tabloids years ago and Matt denied it.

      • Emma - The JP Lover says:

@Jane, who wrote: “Emma – she’s not an interior designer. That was made up by the tabloids years ago and Matt denied it.”

(Blinks) Why in the world would ‘tabloids’ make up a story about Matt Damon’s girlfriend being an interior designer, especially when he has never had any problem saying that she was a bartender when they met? When I Googled “Matt Damon’s Wife Luciana is an interior designer” I got a whole list of articles, including this “People” article covering Matt and Luciana’s City Hall wedding in 2005. In it they describe Luciana as “a former bartender who is now an interior designer.”

        http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,1139477,00.html

When I Googled “Matt Damon denies that his wife is an interior designer” all I got was your statement here at “Celebitchy.” I am not, however, Deus and I could be wrong. So if you have a link to an article where Matt Damon denies that Luciana is an interior designer, I’d love to read it.

    • lowercaselois says:

I think her job is Matt.

      • Sara says:

Bringing up four kids is a job. And this coming from a childfree person. It’s a lot of work.

      • Esmom says:

Sara, yes, a big job. Even with help. Even when they are not little.

      • ell says:

@sara, oh it is, but it’s well known she has a whole lot of nannies and the likes, so i can’t imagine she’d be particularly busy as a mum.

      • Luce says:

It’s actually harder when they are not little and “sports/dance” age, etc. You are running everywhere. There is plenty to do and more even with nannies if you are raising four daughters.

      • KB says:

@ell Angelina has six nannies or more, do you think she isn’t busy as a mom? Jennifer Garner has nannies as well, she isn’t busy as a mom? The nannies don’t leave when they’re not working. They’re there on vacations too. Nannies don’t raise the children, they help.

      • lisa2 says:

        @KB
Angelina AND Brad do not have 6 nannies.. I read your first comment and knew exactly where you were going and yes you went there. Stop quoting tabloid stories as fact.

I think Lucy looks fine. She always looks great on RC to me.

      • ell says:

@KB angelina also has a job. can we compare people who are actually comparable? she also doesn’t have 6 nannies lmao.

      • Naya says:

Even if Angie had 6 nannies, it would make some sense in light of the fact that she has multiple very demanding day jobs. So once again, what on earth does this other woman do with the free time created from having nannies?

    • Franny Days says:

I thought her kids were young!

      • Don't kill me I'm French says:

        They are young

      • lucy2 says:

The youngest is maybe 5 or 6? Pretty young. They have FOUR kids, so I imagine she’s plenty busy, plus she probably helps coordinate his career and schedule.
She’s pretty private, so who knows what she does with the rest of her time. Maybe she volunteers a lot at the kids’ school.

    • Jackie Jormp Jomp says:

Whoa. Maybe she just doesn’t stress about being the prettiest girl at the ball because she is a grown woman with tastes that run beyond impressing people in a vapid industry that isn’t, actually, all that important in the world. Maybe she looks nice to show support for her husband but doesn’t obsess about it because it’s a fancy party held for people to cheer on movies? I dunno.

      • Naya says:

Sure. And this makes perfect sense for the vast majority of women on the red carpet because they DO something with their days. From what I can tell (and I could be wrong), she has at least known two nannies and no day-to-day occupation of her own. So what is she doing all damn day, besides trying to “look nice to show support for her husband”?

      • elizabeth says:

I think she is the prettiest.

      • Jackie Jormp Jomp says:

        @Naya
And she did a good job. She looks nice. She clearly takes care of herself and had her face done and chose a dress she loved and had it fitted.
Just maybe she doesn’t care about making “best-dressed” lists, because she’s not in high school.
I’m sure she has a ton of time, but excessive beauty routines seems like a boring waste of it. You seem to be saying she has to be a trophy because otherwise she’s not pulling her weight, which I frankly find insulting, as a woman. She looks nice.

      • Jayna says:

I think she always looks great at awards shows. She doesn’t get the attention because she’s not famous usually when she should at some of them where she knocks it out of the park.

      • dana says:

I’m confused about why you seem to think that “She has a lot of leisure time” = “She should devote that time to upping her fashion/grooming game”.

In reality, the way it works is:

“This person has a lot of leisure time” = “This person can spend that time doing what interests her & what she enjoys”.

If fashion/beauty simply doesn’t interest her, then all the leisure time in world isn’t going to make it more appealing.

      • tracking says:

This. Even if she does have time on her hands, and let’s face it, she’s not scrubbing toilets and has loads of help with the kids, she simply might not care about awards shows. Her choice.

      • Luce says:

A lot of those women on the carpet do jack all day themselves. Have you been on a film set? Even as a star, you sit on your ass 85% of the day, and many of them have tons of assistants helping them do that. I actually think the stay at home mom, wealthy and nanny-ridden or not, of four daughters probably has more to do during the day.

      • Kristy says:

@Naya – I don’t know why everyone is jumping down your thought. I also wonder what women who have no jobs and nannies do all day. It seems harmless to speculate. And I’m with you, I also think ladies without jobs should look better (I like to think that I if I wasn’t working I would look like a super model)

      • kate says:

I’m not sure why you think having nannies means Luciana would have nothing better to do with her time. I could quite easily fill my days with hobbies, reading, volunteering, catching up with friends and so on, and I don’t have children.

When you have time off work do you just sit around all say twiddling your thumbs or do you easily find things to occupy your time?

    • Granger says:

Just because she has two nannies doesn’t mean she isn’t taking care of her kids. But I see where you’re going with this, Naya. Luciana’s life is definitely “easier” than your average working mother’s. She has a lot of help, and probably hasn’t cleaned a toilet or washed a load of laundry in years. No, she doesn’t have a full-time, outside-of-the-house job, so it’s hard not to wonder what women in that situation do when their kids are at school. I know nothing about the Damons, because they’re pretty private, but it’s quite possible she spends a lot of time working for philanthropic causes…?

      • Esmom says:

Yeah who knows? It seems the implication is that she’s lazy/worthless. I know plenty of wealthy stay at home moms who don’t seem to have many hobbies or interests or activities outside of maybe getting involved in school stuff with their kids but I don’t really spend much time wondering what they are really doing with all their free time. It’s not really my business and often all is not what it seems on the surface, in so many people’s lives. It just seems weird to bash her for “not doing anything.”

      • Jane says:

        She doesn’t have two nannies.

    • Wren33 says:

I could think of a lot of better uses for her time than obsessive red carpet preparation.

      • Jackie Jormp Jomp says:

Exactly. Maybe she read a book or played with her dog, or looked at pictures of pineapples dressed as people on the internet for an hour instead of devoting it to extra hair time. What’s the problem there, exactly? She’s a person, not a Barbie.

      • Lille says:

I think you can have nannies and still be highly involved with your children, especially if you have four. I would have the nannies take them to all of their lessons and sports, so I could stay at home (and out of traffic) with the ones that don’t have lessons or sports that day. We seem to spend a lot of time in the car, for one kid to get dropped off at something. I would have them do most of the cleaning, but I would still cook because it is a way I like to connect with my family. It seems like if you had the money, a nanny could give you a lot more flexibility. Not to mention she could exercise if she wanted- something that can be hard to work out with kids at home.

      • KB says:

Oh Jackie Jormp Jomp, I love your name and your comment.

We’re all here at Woodstocks/Someday there will be a black President!

      • Esmom says:

Lille, I think you are exactly right. When deployed best, the nannies tend to do the tedious stuff so that the moms get more quality time with the kids. That said I do know a couple families where the parents work SO much — never home during the kids’ waking hours — that the nannies really are raising the kids. If the Damons were in that unlikely situation, then I’m sure Luciana would be slammed for not spending enough time with the kids.

    • Petra says:

Luciana is living the life of a rich wife. She was never a woman with any kind of career. Yes she has nannies, cleaners and housekeepers. It’s unfair to compare her to stay at home mums who do it really tough without any help. I’ve read a lot of rumours that he plays away on the downlow. Has anyone else heard that?

  6. Kiki says:

I love Sarah Paulson’s dress, it’s beautiful and maybe my best dress for the nigt. I am impressed.

    • StumpyCorgi says:

It’s fun and creative. It reminds me of “The Jetsons” but there’s nothing wrong with that 🙂

      • QQ says:

Me Too I Love everything about it, the styling too, so Fun!

Also LOVVVEEEE Liv’s Outfit and while I don’t Emmy Rossum I DO Sam Esmail, I’m so Happy Mr. Robot Is sweeping the awards, is such a good Show… and Rami Malek Is DELICIOUS

  7. Caz says:

    Liv looks gorgeous.

    • StumpyCorgi says:

She really does! I’m not sure I’ve ever seen her look less than gorgeous 🙂

      • Imqrious2 says:

But the hair! All those Bobby pins in a row!! Who sent her out like that, and WHY did she let them??

  8. embertine says:

Luciana’s dress is gorgeous and I want to spend my days swanning around the house in it. That is all.

  9. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I love Sarah Paulson’s dress and makeup. The dress reminds me of my mother’s style when I was a child.

  10. ell says:

i love tj miller in silicon valley, when mike judge writes for him he’s so funny and his delivery perfect. when he writes his own stuff, he’s so… disappointing.

i can’t with pregnant women touching their bellies all the time. the baby isn’t suddenly gonna fall out if you don’t hold your tummy. you’re also not the only person being pregnant ever. a whole lot of women have given birth before you, it’s not such a bfd.

    • Kitten says:

Re: the belly-touching pose. I wonder if it’s just something you do instinctively when you’re pregnant and you feel exposed/vulnerable, like when you’re in a room full of strange people taking pictures of you. Or maybe she was trying to show the cut of the dress and make it appear more flattering?

      • Jackie Jormp Jomp says:

YEah, I agree it seems instinctive.

      • ell says:

maybe? but many don’t do it and they look fine, for instance i never saw a pic of keira knightley, carey mulligan or even blake lively doing it.

my friend recently had a baby, and she didn’t do it either. it’s puzzling to me.

      • StumpyCorgi says:

That makes sense, especially if you’re in a crowded and chaotic place… I guess? I’ll never know. The only babies I dream of are fur babies 🙂

      • Bridget says:

When I was pregnant, the belly touching was more so my shirt didn’t look like a giant tent, making me look even more massive.

    • AG-UK says:

I was just going to say that about the belly touching as well. Especially for photos it seems. I don’t know.

    • Franny Days says:

Haha Chrissy Teigen was just saying how she used to make fun of pregnant women for the belly touching but then realized it’s the universal sign saying, this isn’t a hamburger bloat.

    • Esther says:

obviously poses on the red carpet are all for attention but when i think about it i am already awkward with my hands in pictures and dont know where to really put them so i feel like this is a good way to care of that. And the usual red carpet poses dont work when you are pregnant.

    • Amide says:

Why does it bother some if women choose to touch their bellies? There’s freedom to breast feed in public, but cupping your own tummy is an offensive aesthetic?
Must be a North American thing then, cause I never hear it as an issue in real life, and and as far as I’m concerned, if a pregnant woman wants to strap her belly to her head; I say “go for it”!!

      • ell says:

1- i’m not north american, so we get that out of the way.
2- breastfeeding is NOT the same thing. are you joking? one is feeding your baby i.e. an absolute necessity. touching your belly isn’t. it’s annoying, i’m not saying it’s rational, just annoying. like people slurping when they drink, just one of those things that i find annoying.

      • Jegede says:

        @Amide –

        Agreed 100%.
Do you Liv, and any other pregnant ladies. Cup away.

  11. vauvert says:

Emmy and Wendy killed it. I like Liv too but… I am confused, I thought she just had a baby with the new BF or is it a fiancée now? Very confused.
I hate both Naem dresses and frankly the hair and makeup on both Luciana and Sarah seems terrible to me. One is so slicked back and short and bleached she looks like a teenage boy band-er. And Luciana looks like she just rolled out of bed with that hair and didn’t even bother to brush it.

  12. Capepopsie says:

Lucianas gown looks nice, I just wish she would do something, anything, about her
    Hair, though.

  13. Sumodo1 says:

Wait–is this Liv’s third pregnancy or still her SECOND pregnancy, which may be the longest of all time? Daphne Oz much, Liv?

  14. BJ says:

Liv Tyler looks so, SO gorgeous here. Love her. She is the perfect example that you could remain sane even if your father is huge rockstar. Everybody speaks very highly about how down to earth she is. I bet she is a wonderfull mother too.

Also quite underrated as an actress. The only sad thing about her new pregnancy that she will get (again) very limited screentime in the Leftovers. There was one episode dedicated just to her last season, and she was fantastic in it despite she played a not exactly likeable character

    • Amide says:

+1 – To everything you wrote.
And I love her cradling her belly in that Mortica Addams get up!

    • taxi says:

Liv had little-to-no contact with her father when she was a child. Her mother was married to someone else who accepted the paternal role. At age 8, she found out Tyler was her father & it was a few years later that she formed a relationship with him.

    • bluevelvet says:

Liv Tyler rules the red carpet, and she’s pregnant! What a beautiful, elegant dress. The rest are all woof woof to me, what is going on????

  15. Nancy says:

Did Luciana do something to her face? I cannot put my finger on it…she looks different.
Maybe it is the bang trauma. I liked her dress though.

    • PennyLane says:

That was my first question too. She looks great, but the angles of her face are quite different- maybe she got some high quality cheekbone implants? It looks really good.

    • claire says:

Definitely. The last two outings the difference is noticeable. If I saw her in a pic by herself, without Matt, I wouldn’t have guessed it was her. Her cheeks/jawline look shaved down.

    • siri says:

I was wondering about the same. It looks ‘fuller’ on the upper part, or maybe it’s just the bangs…

All of these ladies looked great in my opinion.

  17. Zaytabogota says:

Luciana looks lovely. They seem like a very connected couple. I’m sure that if an actors marriage is to survive and their family remain intact, they either need to do what Brad and Angie do taking turns to work or do as Matt and Luciana do with her supporting him, travelling with him and taking control of the household while he travels the world for work. It’s not compatible with a 9-5 and why should she feel obliged to do that just to please strangers over the Internet? They do what works for them. Snark on the useless fameseekers who deserve it.

  18. lucy2 says:

Don’t care for Luciana’s hair, but beyond that, everyone looks good. Wendy’s dress is pretty, and I like Sarah’s, even thought it is kind of costume-ish.

  19. smcollins says:

Finally saw The Martian over the weekend. Fantastic movie, and MD was fantastic in it!
I think Luciana looked lovely (despite the bangs) and appropriate. She’s there to support her husband and is not an actress/celebrity. If she tried to look as glamorous as them I have no doubt she would be accused of being “thirsty” and a “famewhore.” I’m sure she’ll take it up a notch for the Oscars, but it’s the Oscars. The biggest and most prestigious of the award shows.

    • Jayna says:

It is really good. Matt did a great job. And I loved seeing that Chiwetel Ejiofor was in the movie. He’s a talented guy and has charisma on screen.

  20. kri says:

Liv looks amazing.Except for the shoes. I hate those shoes so much. Satin stack heel is the Kardashian of shoes.

  21. Salamander says:

For some reason I just never get a good vibe feom Luciana. Something about how she is always pinned to Matt makes me think control freak–like she really really has him by the short hairs.

  22. Pondering thoughts says:

Oh come on, it really doesn’t look like showgirl. It is a bit more free and relaxed in comparison to the very glamorous robes which Luciana usually wears. It makes her look even younger.

  23. Penelope says:

    Comb your hair, Luciana.
