‘Suicide Squad’ full-length trailer released: silly, fun, crazy & watchable?

SS5

I’ll admit it, I’ve been thinking for a long time now that comic-book movies are killing the film industry. They’ve taken over and – just my opinion – this model isn’t sustainable. So for months now, I’ve been rolling my eyes at all of the hype around the Suicide Squad, because… for the love of God, why did we need this movie? Why did we need Jared Leto as the Joker? Why did we need Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn? Why did we need Will Smith as Deadshot? And why does Scott Eastwood need to be employed? But here we are. Warner Bros. released the first full-length trailer for the film late yesterday and… it actually looks okay?

Granted, this is not for me. I am not the target audience for this film, and all of the explosions and violence and the plot holes all kind of blur together in a psychedelic implosion of eye rolls. But that being said, I think this will be a very successful movie. And it seems well-cast. Margot Robbie is chewing the scenery and this will be a BIG breakout for her, I’m sure. Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang looks good. Will Smith looks good. We also get a glimpse of Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flagg and what will probably be just a cameo from Viola Davis (I hope she got paid handsomely for that). Anyway… I sort of get it now. This isn’t going to be for little kids who worship Batman, but it will be for teenage boys who love Harley Quinn.

Haha ‘why does Scott Eastwood need to be employed’. Couldn’t agree anymore. He has such a ‘I’m an arsehole’ face.

    • Betti says:

Yes he has one of those ‘I’m a hot douche frat boy’ repeatedly punchable faces. He just irritates the hell outta me.

Everyone knows the only reason he has a ‘career’ is because of his last name.

    • Shambles says:

Still laughing over “why does Scott Eastwood need to be employed?” He has the acting chops of a kitchen sponge.

    • LadyMTL says:

There’s an expression in French here in Quebec that I think says it perfectly: he has a “face à claque.” Basically it means that he has a face that’s begging to be slapped, lol.

Honestly, I have no real interest in this movie and the fact that Slap-my-face Eastwood is in it just lowers my interest even more.

  2. skcord says:

Margot Robbie looks like Anne Hathaway in this movie. I didn’t realize it wasn’t her until recently

    • Alex says:

Now that you mention it I cannot unsee it! Very much Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. Good spot!

    • Miffy says:

      I can’t unsee that now.

She’s even giving the Hathavibes with the over acting. I was digging it til I saw this trailer. I know she’s Harley Quinn and all but I wish she’d reeled it in a bit.

      • skcord says:

Funny, I thought the same thing. Harley was one of my fave henchmen when I was a child. Regardless, I can’t wait to see this

  3. Krista says:

I honestly had no interest until I saw the trailer. It looks fun.

    • Mgsota says:

It does look fun. I’ll have to check it out.

      • Kristen820 says:

Glad someone else thinks it looks fun! The 1st trailer was soooooo dark and serious, but this makes it seem super campy 🙂

    • Mia V. says:

They choose a GREAT song for the trailer, so I might think about watching.

    • Kitten says:

Yeah I’m actually excited for this and with the exception of Nolan’s Batman franchise, I generally don’t care for superhero crap.

      • V4Real says:

I don’t know which look worse DeadPool or Suicide Sqaud but I will probably watch both films. It’s the kid in me that won’t grow up when it comes to comic book movies.

    • BRE says:

I’m wondering if after they had some screenings of this that they realize that they needed to play up the humor of the movie. The trailer they released this summer was darker, not as fun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLLQK9la6Go

  4. Dhavynia says:

I actually liked it and I thought it was well casted. I was actually surprised to see Viola Davis and that Margot was believable

  5. Amelia says:

    This . . . . looks ridiculous.

I am so watching it. *buys tickets*

  6. Betti says:

Comic book movies aren’t my thing either but I agree, Margot Robbie looks pretty bad ass from the trailer and I liked her in Wolf of Wall Street. Jared Leto at the Joker should be interesting.

Its one of the movies I would watch on Netflix but wouldn’t pay to see in the cinema.

  7. fiona says:

Christ. I hate that song by Queen. It looks decent, I mean compared to the crap that comes out these days it looks good. I think Margot was the best casting choice they could have made for Harley. She’s so underrated, so talented & gorgeous.

I hated everything about wolf of wall street but her. She was so captivating.

    • Viper says:

I can’t wait to Margot to blow up. She is talent and deserves but will be like any actress who is underated and has any kind of success. People will build her up to the moon and after one year of her getting a lot of attention, roles the internet will decide she is actually annoying and should retire. Jlaw knows the drill.

  8. Nikki says:

Not just for guys who love Harley!! I’m excited to see this ONLY because of Harley. Successful , beautiful woman who self destructs because of a crazy psychopath? Ya, I think I can relate a lil

  9. Nilber says:

Ugh I hate to admit this but I kind of want to see this. I may sneak and see it while my child is at school since my other half is deployed.

    • McLori says:

Me too. I know I’m not the target demographic, but it looks fun and the cast looks relatively deverse and I have a thing for Joel Kinnamen.

  10. Lindy79 says:

    TAKE MY MONEY!!!!

  11. Lucy says:

I’m really excited for Margot!! She deserves good things.

  12. CharlotteCharlotte says:

I found a really cheap (and nice) cinema, so… Might drag The Man out to see this.

  13. Shambles says:

They had me at Queen. It actually looks pretty badass, but Bohemian Raphsody elevates anything. I’ll see it if I’m allowed to drink.

  14. Allie says:

I have an irrational dislike for Cara Delevigne so I kinda hope this fails. I don’t appreciate her getting to be model, actress, whatever just because she was born rich. And if I have to hear her awful American accent one more time.

    • Betti says:

+1 on the irrational dislike of her and her sister. Both just come across as entitled twats.

    • mom2two says:

Same here, I know it is irrational but any movie she is in is a movie I just don’t want to see. Even if that movie features Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Joel Kinnamen, and Jared Leto.

Of course we all also have Jai Courtney and Scott Eastwood in this and those are two people I don’t understand Hollywood’s love affair with.

    • fiona says:

I dislike Cara as well. And pretty much that new generation of models: gigi, bella, kendull, the lot of them. Only models because their rich families could provide plastic surgery for them all. “Ohhh Kendall so natural”
Bitch, your eyelids don’t magically become larger without surgery, same with your lips and eyebrows & nose becoming smaller. She’s had quite a bit of SUBTLE work done. Same with Gigi and bella. I think they’re pretty and I’m not against plastic surgery (hell, I’ve had it done) but I just CAN’T with their BS. And their stupid fans claiming they’re natural. They all bought their way into a modelling career.

      Yes, I’m bitter.

      • Betti says:

Yes, Cara and Poppy have the connections. When you’re godfather if the CEO of Conde Nast UK, you pretty much are guaranteed a career in fashion. She’s pretty much been handed her career on a gold plate. She has no talent as an actress.

I have no time for people who haven’t hard to slogg it out at the bottom for years to be successful.

      • teacakes says:

Bella and Kendall certainly had nose jobs and Kendall had a face full of botox not too long ago (at 20….sad), but I can’t see any cosmetic surgery work or fillers on Gigi. Yet.

      • redpromise says:

kendall has definitely had a brow lift as well and she’s been getting lip fillers, even though she was telling kylie not to on the show. That family is made up of lying hypocrites.

  15. Mgsota says:

Who’s the actor in the trailer who looks somewhat like Tom Hardy? He looks so familiar but I can’t place him. The one who opens a can and takes a drink?

  16. Tulip Garden says:

Joel kinnaman, :), that is all!

    • my3cents says:

I have a soft spot for him, he was really good in “the killing” really good show, give it a try…

      • Tulip Garden says:

That’s where I discovered him! I really enjoyed that show. Thanks for keeping a look out for me, though:)

      • AntiSocialButterfly says:

He was really, really good in The Killing. That was a fantastic, dark, bleak, amazing series. Sooo many red herrings…

      • Tulip Garden says:

        @ASbutterfly,
So many red herrings and almost all episodes were cliffhangers!
I was so impressed with the 2 leads particularly Joel. Oh my, how my feelings about his character changed throughout the series. Great character arc, really well written and acted. Although that very, very last scene? Aaaaaack, no good for anyone!

    • Velvet, Crushed says:

      Yup. 😀

    • Ever says:

I love him! I could listen to him talk alllllll day long!

  17. jinx says:

Yeah baby!!! It’s going to be an awesome movie! I wasn’t really interested until I learned our glorious Will Smith will be in it – happy dance!

  18. VecchiaSignora says:

I will watch this beacuse of Joel Kinmama and only beacuse of him.

  19. nn says:

I don’t like Margot as Harley, based on the trailes her acting is a bit cringey and I keep thinking of names who could’ve done it better, young cameron diaz, the late britney murphy, heck emma stone probably would have done a better job. Yes, yes too early to say, don’t judge by the trailer, gottcha. imJustsaying.

    • Alex says:

I agree. In the previous teaser trailer, with no real talking, I thought she looked great as Harley, but in this one she feels a bit meh, a lot pantomime and even more “acting for gifs”; kind of acting in bite-size, gif friendly, ready-to-upload-to-tumblr segments. Probably what the director instructed, as she’s not the only one doing it in this trailer, but it does irritate a bit. However, she’s usually a good actress. Incredibly generic “Hollywood Blonde” though – I always get her mixed up with several other blonde actresses.

  20. Monie says:

Is it in Will Smith’s contract that he must ALWAYS get the “Let’s go save the world” line? So corny at this point.

  21. Maya says:

Margot Robbie’s American accent always drives me crazy. It’s not that her accent is bad, necessarily, it’s just that there’s a whiny, childish quality to her voice that I hate. Weirdly, it only seems to be there when she’s doing an American accent, not British or her natural Australian one. Has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?

    • fiona says:

Her voice is supposed to be annoying in her role for Harley, if you listen to the cartoon. Same with her accent in wall street. She doesn’t sound like that normally.

  22. paranormalgirl says:

    Looking forward to this.

  23. Chaucer says:

    Hot Topic: the movie

  24. Green Is Good says:

Cutting a trailer is an art, and this one kicks ass! I’m in.

  25. als says:

The music is awesome, the funny-crazy tone is great, Margot is amazing but the one-liners are terrible. No matter how great everything else is, I think the cool and entertaining lines are very important. Give the actors something to work with.

  26. Chelsey says:

The least exciting thing about this movie is Leto as the Joker. I get the feeling it’s not as good as he is telling everyone it will be.

  27. Mandy says:

Maybe I’m a total sucker but my first reaction is that Warner brothers is doing a much better job at being somewhat inclusive. I have never seen an Avengers movie but I am mildly interested in seeing this movie. I would love to see Marvrel step it up and do something with Ms. Marvel Kamala Khan. My daughter loves those comics.

    • Abby_J says:

*I* love those comics! Kamala is awesome. I think she’d be an awesome Netflix show geared toward Tween/Teen aged kiddos, but I’d totally watch too.

  28. sars says:

not sure how you can judge a trailer for plot holes?

  29. anne_000 says:

I liked the first few trailer betters, the ones with the song ” I Started A Joke.” They had more atmosphere and seemed more sophisticated.

For the longest time, I thought the girl-part was played by Lindsay Lohan.

I don’t like this new trailer as much.

    • Betti says:

I SO want them to release the ‘I Started a Joke’ trailer version as part of the movie soundtrack – I love the version they did.

      • anne_000 says:

I agree. That version so very well fit the movie, at least from what I saw on the trailer.

  30. Saks says:

I’m so watching this. It looks fun and not melodramatic which is precisely what I don’t like of the last superheroes movies.

  31. Betsy says:

I did not recognize Will Smith on that cover at all!

  32. Josefina says:

I like comic book movies. I think Marvel actually makes an effort to make entertaining and exciting films. I hate how people complain about Hollywood budgets just now and link it to comic book movies. Eh, Titanic is the ultimate chick flick of all time, and that was not a cheap movie to make. Action films in particular have ALWAYS been ridiculously expensive. Now they just happen to star superheroes.

Superhero movies are just another genre and they happen to be very profitable. I’m personally really, really tired of WWII movies and the fact a new one gets released every time awards season approaches. But I just ignore them (I’ll give you, though, that ignoring superhero films is hard when they are everywhere)

  33. H says:

DC Comics movies do not have the entertainment value that Marvel movies do. I’m an old school Superman fan, but this and the Batfleck movie do nothing for me. Not excited at all.

However, I am counting the days until Captain America: Civil Wars. Suicide Squad? I’ll see how I feel after reviews come out.

  34. kri says:

I love Joel kinnaman. That’s all.

  35. CK says:

I kind of love the current iterations of comic book movies. My take on the superhero movie phenomenon is that it’s a source of revenue that allows studios and actors to take on smaller films without the mass appeal to warrant their budgets. I disagree that they’ve taken over as well. We may get 3-4 a year, but that’s only a drop in the bucket compared to the amount of indies and prestige dramas that we still get.

  36. Hejhej says:

I can’t wait to see this. It looks great.

  37. Jag says:

Or this is for 40-something year old women who have loved comic books since they were kids and love action movies, too, as well as cheering on the bad guys – aka ME. lol

  38. Eggplant says:

Margot was very good in Z for Zach; she can act, so why’s she doing this drivel?

I get the feeling they’re going for a lovable loser feel with this film, like Guardians of the Galaxy, which was actually pretty watchable. Can’t stand comic book / superhero movies in gen so I’m going to skip this one. I saw the other trailer and Viola Davis’s lines made me laugh – in derision. Silly film.

  39. Abby_J says:

We are total comic book nerds so honestly, we’ll go see anything that DC or Marvel puts out (although if forced to choose, I enjoy the Marvel movies so much better, even though some of my favorite comic book characters are DC. We even gave Fantastic Four a shot over the summer, knowing it was horrible.

We are so bad that we already have our Valentine’s Date Night planned out to go see Deadpool. (Hey, it’s a theater that serves dinner, and we won’t have the kids with us, so that counts, right?)

I don’t think that the Suicide Squad movies looks as horrible as I expected it to. Will Smith appears to be playing the same character he always plays in stuff like this, but his character, Deadshot, is actually really depressed and suicidal so it will be interesting if the movie plays that up more than the previews.

My baby girl loves to see the girl who plays Harley on TV. She’s a little strawberry blonde and she always wants me to color her pigtails in different colors, although she wanted green and Purple because she is obsessed with the Hulk. According to her, he’s going to be my son-in-law one day. Anyway, I did it twice with that temporary colored hair chalk. 😉

  40. Nicole says:

Apparently I’m a teenage boy (?!) cause I love Harley Quinn. Margot Robbie looks perfectly cast.

  41. Amber says:

Hasn`t Margot Robbie broken out already?.She`s quite a big star.

  42. impy says:

uuuh how about for the HUGE female fan base who worship Harley Quinn?? i scoff at this teenage boy nonsense -.-

  43. Cc says:

That’s a really good trailer, of course the music helps a lot.

  44. vv007 says:

It sort of reminds me of Guardians of the Galaxy o.O I hate to say that because I had hoped it would be crazy and warped but the music in the trailer, the story of the anti-heros, yeah it has shades of GG. I will see it though. I have a weakness for Jai Courtney and Joel Kinnaman!
